Thank you for your gifts to the Mercy Hospital Foundation in the last year!

During 2019 we had wonderful momentum with increased giving across all areas including Love Lights and the Colleague Campaign, and we were excited to see what 2020 would bring. As it turned out, 2020 brought a pandemic. While this changed things dramatically it didn’t stop Mercy Iowa City which continued to care for patients as before, but with enhanced protections to make sure we could do this safely. Several months later, we are back to normal in many ways, but with those enhanced protections and a constant focus on PPE (personal protective equipment), supplies and space to care for every single patient in the best possible way while keeping everyone safe.

We are keeping our Report to the Community a bit shorter this year but encourage you to look at the list of things the Mercy Hospital Foundation was able to accomplish with your help. One of those was the opening of the new Mercy Iowa City Rehabilitation Hospital in Coralville which welcomed its first patients on May 28. Plantings of flowering trees, shrubs, rosebushes and more in the Therapy Courtyard and the garden flanking the main entrance to the hospital were made possible by gifts to the Mercy Hospital Foundation. See pages 7–8 for the complete list of contributions your gifts made to Mercy Iowa City in the past year. None of these would have happened without your support and that of others who have made permanent investments at Mercy over the years.

On pages 4–6 please see a partial list of those who donated PPE, hand sanitizer and more to help us during the last several months when many of these things were simply not available, and those who prepared or made possible so many meals to show support for our colleagues who worked tirelessly during a challenging time. We appreciate all of these gifts very, very much.

As we write this letter to you in summer 2020, we know there will be many announcements of new plans and successes, and we look forward to sharing those. In the meantime, we want to sincerely thank you for your support of Mercy Iowa City and its mission of providing care to all in the spirit of Jesus Christ and the Catholic tradition of the Sisters of Mercy. COVID-19 brought many changes to Mercy Iowa City, but also lots of team spirit and community support. Donations of thousands of meals, snacks and more from throughout SE Iowa including (clockwise from left to right): this delivery of Girl Scout cookies; face masks and shields are now worn for every patient encounter; a huge donation of masks coordinated by one of our student volunteers through his church; the nursing team on 4 Center Surgical received the 2020 DAISY Team Award for outstanding nursing care; you can see the smiles behind the masks of colleagues at Mercy Family Medicine of Solon who received lunches donated by Subway; and hearts, the symbol of hope during this time, are everywhere at Mercy.

Each year Mercy nurses, nominated and selected by their peers, are honored with special tributes and cash gifts in recognition of outstanding and compassionate nursing care. Support staff are honored with the Dr. George S. and Kathryn B. Anderson Friend of Nursing Award and the T. T. Bozek Friend of Nursing Award. The Partners in Caring Award recipient is nominated by nurses at Mercy for physicians who care for patients in the hospital. This award was created to recognize an individual physician for the professionalism and compassion he or she brings to his or her relationship with nurses and patients at Mercy Iowa City. This physician represents the best of the physician/nursing relationship by respecting, collaborating and working together to achieve the best possible patient care. Cash GiftThe simplest method to provide support for Mercy is with a cash gift. These gifts may be made with cash, a personal check, or online with a credit card by going to www.mercyiowacity.org/MercyFoundation and clicking “Donate Now.” You can even set up a direct debit plan to give monthly directly from a checking or savings account.

Future Gifts May include:• A charitable bequest in your will or trust• A beneficiary designation for a percentage,

or all, of your retirement plan such as an IRA or annuity

• A beneficiary designation for all or a portion of a life insurance plan

• A life income gift through a Charitable Gift Annuity or Charitable Remainder Trust

Honor or Memorial GiftsA gift is a thoughtful and meaningful way to honor or remember a loved one, friend or colleague. The Foundation will notify the person you have honored, or the next-of-kin for a memorial gift, that you have made a gift.

Healing HandsMaking a gift to the Foundation is a wonderful way to recognize the exceptional care you or a loved one received from the staff at Mercy. We will notify the healthcare professional(s) you have honored to let them know how much you appreciated their care.

Matching GiftsMany contributors multiply their support to the Foundation by making use of their employer’s matching gift programs. Please ask your employer’s Human Resources Department for the necessary form to send with your gift.

RecognitionThe Mercy Legacy Club recognizes donors who give $1,000 or more to any area each year. Gifts of $1,000 or more to Mercy Hospice Care are recognized on a donor wall in the Hospice Unit. Gifts of $5,000 or more to any area or combination of areas are recognized on the donor wall in the hospital lobby near the skywalk entrance.


Area of Greatest Need-UnrestrictedMany donors choose to direct their gifts to be available for new initiatives or urgent projects. In 2019 unrestricted gifts helped to fund equipment and remodeling in Behavioral Health, Emergency Care, Mercy Infusion Center, Maternal/Child, Mercy Guest Lodging, and the Neurodiagnostic Sleep Lab.

Arts Program The visual and musical arts programs help to create a healing environment for patients, family members, visitors and staff. Mercy’s art collection featuring local and regional artists continues to grow through generous donations that allow new acquisitions each year. Music therapy services are also supported through the Foundation.

Endowment Funds to Support Critical ProgramsGifts and bequests are often received from donors who want their gift invested and made permanent to create an ongoing source of income for a specific purpose. These legacy gifts benefit the hospital in a number of areas including area of greatest need, Hospice, Behavioral Health, Nursing Education and more. Individual donors can add to existing endowment funds or create new ones to benefit a special interest such as cancer or cardiac care. A portion of the income earned from these funds provides a reliable income stream, and additional gifts may be added at any time. By creating or contributing to a permanently endowed fund, you leave a lasting legacy to support Mercy’s mission and services into the future.

Equipment and FacilitiesGifts supporting equipment and facilities needs are very important. Naming opportunities exist for facility expansion and remodeling projects.

Education FundThe Education Fund is a permanently endowed fund that awards scholarships to Mercy employees who are continuing their professional education in nursing and other select areas. You may also create a permanently endowed scholarship to honor or memorialize someone special to you.
