Memscap startet to work with Wireless medical sensors in 2000. The figure below show the first deign solution for such a system. The solution was to have a base module that powered the sensor andTransmitted the radio signal. At this time the idea was to have a receiver box that transformed the signal back to an analogue signal.Thereby make it compatible with existing monitors and systems.

First wireless medical idea

Memscap made the first wireless prototype in 2002. See figure below. The unit was based on the Memscap Invasive blood pressure sensor SP840.A standard Bluetooth radio, using the serial protocol was used to transmit the signal.

The technology was tested out and found to have equivalent resolution and accuracy as the standard wired sensor. The wireless solution was discussed with Simens and Datex (GE). The feedback from the Monitor producers was: What about the other sensors?

WiSMoS (Wireless sensor monitoring system)With the help from the WLAN and the wsH&C projects. With contributions from The University hospital in Oslo and Telenor the WisSMoS system was developed. This solution made it possible to include all other active sensors in a common radio and power unit.

A design study was performed for the WiSMoS concept.

The Wismos solution solved the question from the monitor producers regarding all the other sensors.

However it would require that Memscap become a system supplier if this solution should be taken to the marked.

It could also be regarded as a competitor solution to the established monitor companies. Ref. Memscap’s customers.

Memscap have decided that their strategy will be to stay at thesensor/transducer/transmitter level. A component supplier and not a system developer.

Memscap is back to its original idea of making a pure wireless solutionfor invasive blood pressure sensors. The figure below show a potential new wireless product. This approach require that other sensor suppliers generate their products with a common radio and communication protocol solution.

Memscap Wireless Pressure TransducerThe Memscap Wireless Pressure Transducer (WPT) developed duringthe BWSN project is based on the Memscap SP840 series of physiological pressure sensors with disposable dome. Memscap WPT is providing digitized and pre-scaled pressure readings over a wireless interface. The wireless link is utilizing the TinyOS based BWSN Sensor Message Format over an IEEE 802.15.4 compliant radio.
