QUiCK FaCtSTigers vs. Tulane

This is the 38th meeting between Memphis and Tulane. The Tigers lead the overall series 22-15, but have won just one time in the last five meetings. Memphis opened league play against Tulane last season with a 61-59 victory in the Elma Roane Fieldhouse, snapping a four-game losing streak to the Green Wave. Tulane then returned the favor by knocking Memphis off in the C-USA semifinals on the Tigers’ home floor at FedExForum, 63-44, to deny the Tigers a chance at their first C-USA champion-ship game appearance since 1998. Memphis is 9-8 all-time in games played in New Orleans, and last won there in 2008. Maybe the name change and the renovations of the venue will help change the Tigers’ luck. Formerly called Fogelman Arena, the building has undergone renovations and has been renamed Devlin Fieldhouse. Similar to Memphis’ two-phase renovations of the Elma Roane Fieldhouse, Devlin Fieldhouse has fin-ished phase one of its renovations, adding chairback seating to the home side and over the student section and new concession and merchandise stands. The acoustical ceiling was also removed and new lighting was installed to provide television-quality lighting levels. A new Gameday Club with bar seating was also added and the lobby gained a new ticket booth and decorations.

About Tulane Tulane and the Tigers are tangled for fourth place in the Conference USA standings after both teams picked up wins on Thursday night. Tulane went on the road to Rice and upended the host Owls, 69-65, holding C-USA preseason player of the year Jessica Kuster to just seven rebounds, in-cluding one offensive, and 15 points on 5-for-15 shooting. The Green Wave has great guard play, with three different players ranking in the top 200 players in the country is assists per game and in assist-to-turnover ratio. Sophomore Jamie Kaplan leads the way with 4.3 assists per game and a 1.97 assist-to-turnover ratio, while senior guards Olivia Grayson and Tyria Snow each hand out 3.6 assists a night. Snow has a 1.63 assist-to-turnover ratio, while Grayson has a 1.23 ratio. One of the favorite targets for the guards is redshirt sophomore Whitney Bibbins, who missed all of last season with a concussion. She has returned with a vengeance this season, averaging a team-high 13.8 ppg and adding 5.4 rebounds a night. And the Green Wave also pos-sesses a potent threat from beyond the arc in sophomore shooter Danielle Blagg. Blagg ranks 47th in the country in three-point field goal percentage (39.1) and 82nd in three-point field goals made per game (2.25). Blagg hit eight triples in the win over Marshall last Sunday, and added three more while coming off the bench in the win at Rice Thursday night.

On the Road Against the West Again After back-to-back home meetings against teams from the East Division of Conference USA, the Ti-gers are back on the road to face a team from the West, playing at Tulane, Sunday, at 1 p.m. Memphis has successfully defended its home court in the first two meetings in league play, but will need to find some wins on the road to try to remain in the top four, where the Tigers are currently tied with Tulane for fourth place. Memphis has traditionally been able to find some road wins in league play since Melissa McFerrin took over prior to the 2008-09 season. Since McFerrin has taken over, the Tigers have gone 16-16 in C-USA road games, including a 5-2 record on the road last season when they finished second in the C-USA standings. While the current Tiger roster has a bunch of newcomers, they have proved that they can win on the road, picking up wins at Illinois State, Texas-Arlington, Saint Louis and Seton Hall before coming up short in a 77-74 loss at Houston to open the C-USA slate. Memphis is 4-3 in road games this season, but has played just the Houston game away from home in the last six outings. That one road loss is the Tigers’ only loss in the past nine games.

Another Step Forward for the Tigers Youngsters Early in the season following the loss of Mooriah Rowser and Bilqis Abdul-Qaadir to injuries, if the Tigers found themselves down at the half, the game slipped to a loss. But the youngsters are finding their resiliency. After trailing in games against Tennessee Tech and East Carolina, the Tigers came out and reversed the second half, picking up wins. Memphis held Tennessee Tech to 31 points in the second half to win that game, 73-64, and held ECU to 28 points in a 66-56 victory on Thursday night. In all, Memphis has trailed at the break in eight of its first 16 games. They have trailed at the half in three of the last five games, but have come back to win two of the three, and were a three-point shot off the rim away from needing overtime at Houston to determine if they could have completed that comeback.

Abdul-Qaadir Looking For Career Point No. 500 Redshirt junior point guard Bilqis Abdul-Qaadir is just six points shy of her 500th collegiate point. She is also 23 assists shy of the 200 career assist mark with 177 assists. The junior missed seven games earlier this season with a broken right hand, her shooting hand. She returned to the line-up after the semester break in the win over Missouri.

Dickson Shy of Top 10 in Career Rebounds and Blocks Everyone in the league knows Nicole Dickson as a scorer, but the senior forward is just 14 re-bounds shy of breaking into the career top 10 at Memphis in rebounding heading into the Sunday contest at Tulane. She has 671 career boards and is eying Melissa Abraham’s (1998-2002) mark of 671 rebounds, which is 10th in Memphis history. Dickson is also three blocked shots away from the career top 10 in that category as well. She has 51 blocks, just three shy of ninth place, where Taylor Mumphrey (2009-11) and Raven Rogers (2001-05) sit. Of course, Dickson is also just seven points shy of her 1,400th career point. She currently ranks 15th at Memphis in scoring with 1,393 points and is 34 points shy of moving to 14th all-time in scoring, where Shannon Hamp’s (1999-2003) mark of 1,427 points sits.

Another Freshman of the Week Honor After posting her first career double-double in the win over Southern Miss, Asianna Fuqua-Bey was named the C-USA Freshman of the Week on Monday. She averaged 10.5 points and 10.5 rebounds in

Road Wins in League Play & The 10 C-USA Wins Mark Memphis finished the regular season with a winning record in Conference USA road games for the first time under Melissa McFerrin. The Tigers were 6-2 on the road in conference games with wins at Southern Miss, at UAB, at East Carolina, at SMU, at UCF and at Rice. Road Wins ...................................................... With the Win Over East Carolina- Memphis improved to 6-1 on the season when holding teams under 60 points. Memphis is 5-5 when the opponents score more than 60 points.- Bilqis Abdul-Qaadir tied a career-high with six rebounds- Melissa McFerrin coached her 89th victory at Memphis. Thirty-eight of her 89 career victories have been against Conference USA schools. The Tigers are 38-29 in C-USA in Coach McFerrin’s fifth season.- Memphis won its fifth straight game against ECU.- Memphis was on the positive side of the fast break points margin for the first time in three games, fin-ishing with six fast break points, compared to zero for ECU. Memphis has only scored more fast break points than its opponents in six of the first 17 games this season. Some of that has been on the Tigers’ transition defense and getting in front of fast breaks and run outs.- Ariel Hearn and Nicole Dickson were both in the starting lineup. Those two are the only ones who have played in and started every game this season.- Bilqis Abdul-Qaadir scored double-digit points for the fourth time in five games. The one time she missed double digits? A nine-point game against Southern Miss. As she gets her wind back after miss-ing seven games, she is getting more shots off, and is drawing more defensive attention. In the last two games, she has just under 40 percent from the field for just the second and third time in nine games this season. She is 7-for-22 from the field in the last two contests (.318). - Ariel Hearn scored double-digit points for the 11th straight game. In her first 17 career collegiate games, she has been held to single digits just three times, including a nine-point game at East Tennes-see and a seven point, 12 assist game against Grambling State.- Asianna Fuqua-Bey went over the 100 career point mark with her five points. She now has 105 for her young Tiger career.

Back to Back Weekly Honors Senior forward Nicole Dickson and freshman guard Ariel Hearn swept the Conference USA weekly honors for a second consecutive week. While Conference USA has had players win the award for repeat weeks in both awards, they have never had the same two players from the same school win back-to-back awards.

2012-13 MEMPHIS WOMEN’S BASKETBALL GAME NOTESuNIvErSITy Of MEMPHIS

Melissa McFerrin was named the University of Memphis women’s basket-ball coach on April 19th, 2008, becoming the fourth coach in the program’s mod-ern history.

McFerrin, the 2008 Patriot League Coach of the Year, spent the previous four seasons at American University in Washington D.C. Her 2007 American team advanced to the Patriot League championship game and her 2008 squad won the school’s first-ever Patriot League regular season championship, finishing with an 18-14 overall record. That team won 11 of 12 games down the stretch, advancing to the post season for the first time since 1997-98 with a WNIT bid. In four seasons at American, McFerrin compiled a 50-70 record and guided five different players to all-conference honors, while two other players earned all-freshman honors.

Prior to her stint with American, McFerrin was an associate head coach at the University of Minnesota from 2002-2004. She helped Minnesota to a 50-15 record, including an NCAA Final Four appearance in 2004 and a Sweet Sixteen berth in 2003. She signed two recruiting classes ranked in the top 20 at Minne-

sota, and helped guide two Kodak All-Americans, including WNBA player Lindsey Whalen. McFerrin’s time at Minnesota came after a five-year association with the WNBA. She began her affiliation with the WNBA as an assistant coach with the New York Liberty from 1997-1999, assisting with coaching duties for the 1997 WNBA Championship runner-up Liberty squad. She moved to the Washington Mystics as an assistant coach in 1999-2000, taking over as the Mystics’ General Manager in 2000. As the GM, she guided a team that made its first-ever WNBA play-off appearance in 2000, and handled all player trades and draft decisions before joining the coaching staff at Minnesota. Her WNBA stint followed a 14-year coaching career that made three different stops. McFerrin began her coaching career as a graduate assistant at Wayland Baptist University in Texas from 1983-84. She was then hired as an assistant coach at Central Michigan University, where she helped the Chippewas to a 95-77 record in her six seasons, including a 1985 Mid-American Conference championship. She left Central Michigan in 1990 to become an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at The Ohio State University. At Ohio State, she helped the Buckeyes to a 118-90 record and a 1993 Big Ten champion-ship and an NCAA National Championship runner-up. That 1993 squad benefited from a 1992 McFerrin re-cruiting class that was ranked No. 1 in the nation, one of seven Buckeye recruiting classes to be nationally-ranked under McFerrin’s watch at OSU. In 1996, McFerrin helped guide the Buckeyes to the NCAA Second Round before leaving the following season for the WNBA. A native of Cassville, Mo., McFerrin was a four-year letterwinner and starting point guard for the University of Missouri Tigers from 1979 to 1983. She helped Missouri to a 1983 Big Eight tournament championship and NCAA tournament berth and a 1982 NCAA Sweet Sixteen appearance, earning Big Eight honorable mention honors and Scholar-Athlete awards along the way. She graduated cum laude with a degree in secondary education from Missouri in 1983, and received her master’s degree in physical education from Central Michigan in 1988.
