QUiCK FaCtSTigers vs. UAB

This is the 47th meeting between the two programs and Memphis leads the overall series, 28-18. The Tigers swept the regular season from the Blazers last year, picking up a rare road win in Bartow Arena, 70-59, in the first game, then winning in the Elma Roane Fieldhouse, 71-56. Memphis is 9-11 in games played in Birmingham and last year’s win there marked just the second victory in seven tries for the Tigers.

About UAB The Blazers are off to a blistering-hot start in C-USA play, using two road wins, including a 61-57 victory at UTEP in their last outing, to remain just half a game behind SMU in the league standings for first place. Another of the league’s talented point guards, the Blazers are quarterbacked by senior Amber Jones, who averages 13.6 ppg and is one of three Blazers to rank among the league leaders in steals per game, with 2.6 a night. Karisma Chapman and Ashley Grimes give the Blazers a talented front court. Chapman averages 12.3 ppg and 6.4 rebounds, while Grimes averages 11.2 points and 3.3 rebounds a night. Taking care of the basketball will be paramount to the Tigers’ chances for a tough road win. UAB has three players that rank in the top of the league in steals per game, and when they aren’t turning you over, they just aren’t letting teams score. UAB has the league’s top defense, holding opponents to just 26.3 percent from the field in league play and allowing a stingy 49.7 ppg. UTEP was the first league opponent to score over 50 points on UAB, and still lost the game, 61-57. The Blazers have held both UCF and Houston to under 50 points in a game. The Tigers lost at Houston and gave up 77 points to that same Houston roster.

Dickson Shy of Top 10 in Career Rebounds and Blocks Everyone in the league knows Nicole Dickson as a scorer, but the senior forward is just five re-bounds shy of breaking into the career top 10 at Memphis in rebounding heading into the game at UAB. She has 680 career boards and is eying Melissa Abraham’s (1998-2002) mark of 685 rebounds, which is 10th in Memphis history. Dickson is also three blocked shots away from the career top 10 in that category as well. She has 51 blocks, just three shy of ninth place, where Taylor Mumphrey (2009-11) and Raven Rogers (2001-05) sit. Of course, Dickson has also some offensive game. With her 31 point effort at Tulane, she passed the 1,400 point mark. She currently ranks 15th at Memphis in scoring with 1,424 points and is three points shy of moving to 14th all-time in scoring, where Shannon Hamp’s (1999-2003) mark of 1,427 points sits.

30 is the New 20 Nicole Dickson scored 31 points in the loss at Tulane. She was 12-for-24 from the field in that game, and accounted for exactly half of Memphis’ points (the Tigers lost 72-62). The 31-point game was the fifth game of the season that Dickson has gone over the 30 point mark. Dickson is one of three players in NCAA DI women’s basketball that has scored 30 or more points in five or more games this season. She is currently tied with Georgetown senior Sugar Rodgers with five and trails only FIU junior Jerica Coley who has done so in six games. She seems to have no problem finding points the road. Four of her five 30-point efforts have come on road trips.

Dickson’s 30-Point Clubat Illinois State -- 36 pointsat UT Arlington -- 30 pointsat East Tennessee State -- 30 pointsWright State -- 34 pointsat Tulane -- 31 points

Hearn’s Double-Digit Streak Snapped Freshman guard Ariel Hearn had her worst shooting night of the season in the loss at Tulane, shooting just 16.7 percent (2-for-12). She also had just two free-throw attempts, the second-lowest attempt total for the season for her in a game and finished with just seven points. That single digit night snapped a 11-game streak of double-digit points for the collegiate newcomer. Hearn has battled foul trouble in the first half of C-USA road games. She played just eight minutes in the first half of the loss at Tulane, and played just seven minutes in the first half of the loss at Houston to start the C-USA slate. Keeping the freshman on the floor is key to the Tigers’ success, as she is the team’s second-leading scorer with 14.7 ppg and leads the team with 76 assists.

Abdul-Qaadir Looking For Career Point No. 500 The Tigers struggled with freshman guard Ariel Hearn not scoring at Tulane; that problem was compounded by redshirt junior Bilqis Abdul-Qaadir having her toughest shooting night of the season at the same time. Abdul-Qaadir was 1-for-13 from the field (7.7 percent) and was 1-for-5 from three-point range. She is now just one point shy of her 500th career point. The junior missed seven games earlier this season with a broken right hand, her shooting hand. She returned to the line-up after the semester break in the win over Missouri.

Big RPI Week for the Tigers Memphis improved from No. 139 in the NCAA RPI to No. 126 with the win over East Carolina and the loss at Tulane. The Tigers have another opportunity in the game at UAB Thursday. The Blazers are No. 115 in the country in RPI, and with road wins weighted heavier than home wins, the Tigers could improve their ranking by another big leap if they could find a win at UAB. The Blazers rank fourth in C-USA in RPI, leaping from 159 to 115 with the win at UTEP on Sunday. Memphis is sixth at 126, and hosts eighth ranked RPI team UCF, Sunday, back in the Elma Roane Fieldhouse.

Road Wins in League Play & The 10 C-USA Wins Mark Memphis finished the regular season with a winning record in Conference USA road games for the first time under Melissa McFerrin. The Tigers were 6-2 on the road in conference games with wins at Southern Miss, at UAB, at East Carolina, at SMU, at UCF and at Rice. Road Wins ...................................................... Back to Back Weekly Honors Senior forward Nicole Dickson and freshman guard Ariel Hearn swept the Conference USA weekly honors for a second consecutive week. While Conference USA has had players win the award for repeat weeks in both awards, they have never had the same two players from the same school win back-to-back awards.

2012-13 MEMPHIS WOMEN’S BASKETBALL GAME NOTESuNIvErSITy Of MEMPHIS

Melissa McFerrin was named the University of Memphis women’s basket-ball coach on April 19th, 2008, becoming the fourth coach in the program’s mod-ern history.

McFerrin, the 2008 Patriot League Coach of the Year, spent the previous four seasons at American University in Washington D.C. Her 2007 American team advanced to the Patriot League championship game and her 2008 squad won the school’s first-ever Patriot League regular season championship, finishing with an 18-14 overall record. That team won 11 of 12 games down the stretch, advancing to the post season for the first time since 1997-98 with a WNIT bid. In four seasons at American, McFerrin compiled a 50-70 record and guided five different players to all-conference honors, while two other players earned all-freshman honors.

Prior to her stint with American, McFerrin was an associate head coach at the University of Minnesota from 2002-2004. She helped Minnesota to a 50-15 record, including an NCAA Final Four appearance in 2004 and a Sweet Sixteen berth in 2003. She signed two recruiting classes ranked in the top 20 at Minne-

sota, and helped guide two Kodak All-Americans, including WNBA player Lindsey Whalen. McFerrin’s time at Minnesota came after a five-year association with the WNBA. She began her affiliation with the WNBA as an assistant coach with the New York Liberty from 1997-1999, assisting with coaching duties for the 1997 WNBA Championship runner-up Liberty squad. She moved to the Washington Mystics as an assistant coach in 1999-2000, taking over as the Mystics’ General Manager in 2000. As the GM, she guided a team that made its first-ever WNBA play-off appearance in 2000, and handled all player trades and draft decisions before joining the coaching staff at Minnesota. Her WNBA stint followed a 14-year coaching career that made three different stops. McFerrin began her coaching career as a graduate assistant at Wayland Baptist University in Texas from 1983-84. She was then hired as an assistant coach at Central Michigan University, where she helped the Chippewas to a 95-77 record in her six seasons, including a 1985 Mid-American Conference championship. She left Central Michigan in 1990 to become an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at The Ohio State University. At Ohio State, she helped the Buckeyes to a 118-90 record and a 1993 Big Ten champion-ship and an NCAA National Championship runner-up. That 1993 squad benefited from a 1992 McFerrin re-cruiting class that was ranked No. 1 in the nation, one of seven Buckeye recruiting classes to be nationally-ranked under McFerrin’s watch at OSU. In 1996, McFerrin helped guide the Buckeyes to the NCAA Second Round before leaving the following season for the WNBA. A native of Cassville, Mo., McFerrin was a four-year letterwinner and starting point guard for the University of Missouri Tigers from 1979 to 1983. She helped Missouri to a 1983 Big Eight tournament championship and NCAA tournament berth and a 1982 NCAA Sweet Sixteen appearance, earning Big Eight honorable mention honors and Scholar-Athlete awards along the way. She graduated cum laude with a degree in secondary education from Missouri in 1983, and received her master’s degree in physical education from Central Michigan in 1988.
