SENIORS
Last fall when th© old school bell resumed Its chime,
we the class of 1948 once more gathered together our text-
books and proceeded back t o Monroe High School for the final
lap of our twelve year journey. After going through eleven
years of struggles, we came back prepared for any obstacle
which might attempt to hinder our progress. Now at the end
of this great journey, we face the future wlcrh brains that
are swelling with knowledge.
In this our last year, we have had both ups and downs.
Somehow, the ups have always managed to overpower the downs
and have carried us through with smiles on our faces.
To start the year off with a banf-, we elected a full
force of efficient class officers. For our chief executive
we chose Charles Habegger in the office of president. As
vice-president we chose Chester Hirschy who very ably man-
aged affairs in the absence of Charles. Mildred Schwartz,
who was elected secretary, was kept busy with minutes and
records. Finally, we bestowed upon Vera Yoder, as treasurer,
the headache of keeping the class funds out of the red and
making both ends of the financial problem meet.
^e ^
On November 11. and apain on the 15th, The dramatists of
our class were made famous through their production of a do-
mestic comedy entitled, "Polishing Papa," The cast included
Sidney Smith, a rich sausage manufacturer-Ernest Steury;
Arthur Smith, earer to invest his dad's money-Donald Wittwer;
Jane Smith, Arthur's sister, also possessed of illusions-
Vera Yoder; Mrs. Stevens, housekeeper for Sidney Smith-Mildred
Schwartz; Marie, a maid-Bonnie Christener; Samuel Karman,
an advertisin • solicitor-Chester Hirschy; Dick Brainerd, a
young attorney-Carl Kussbaum; Rose Parker, with whom Arthur
is in love-Rebecca Nussbaum; Re inald Dabney, an English
Lord-Weldon Nussbaum; and Pegpy Sampson, a friend of the
Smiths-Rosanna Sprunger,

e ^JUNIORS
Hop, ski/, and a jump] Last September we juniors trotted
gaily back to school to display our wisdom or perhaps ignorance
would be a better word. After adjusting ourselves to the long
grind we elected class officers as follows: President, Paulin*
Nussbaum; Vice-President, Gladys Zurcher; Secretary, Milton
Kabegrer; and Treasurer, Dick Coppess. Our class sponsor is
Mr. Knauff.
In april we presented the class play "But Fair Tomorrow"
under the direction of Mrs, Neuenschwander.
The twenty-seventh of April was an important day. We
juniors played host to the seniors at the Junior-Senior recep-
tion.
Our class enjoyed several parties during the year.
By the time Kay rolled arround and the report cards made
their last appearance, we were plad to see enough credits to
return as seniors next year.

SOPHOMORE HISTORY
Aftei' Strug-ling through the many hardships of the
Freshman year, we have at last gained the dlstinatlon of
being sophomores. We did nothing startling in our Freshman
year but have become renowned through our excellent behavior
and scholarly abilities.
At the beginninr of our Sophomore year we elected the
following officers President, Doyle Lehman: Vice President,
Virginia Habegser: Secretary, Darleen Yoder: and Treasurer,
Curtis Nussbaum. Miss Miller is our class sponsor, whose
pride and joy is her new car.
The sophomores enraged in some very worthwhile activities
this year includini'- the selling of ma-^azines and Bearkatz
pins.
We enjoyed two class parties this year and are looking
forward to more in the future.
Our second year is now at an end and we look back with
pleasure to those years not altogether spent in throwing
paper wads and writing notes. However, in spite of these
things we look eagerly forward to our next two years in
which old M.H.S. will know Who's Who.

FRESHMEN
We are fortunate in being Freshmen because we envy the
upper classmen and sympathize with ourselves. We are an
exception to most Freshmen because we aren't in the least
"green"! We are thirty-five members in our class.
At the start of the year we elected the following class
officers which proved to be very efficient. Our President is
Donald Kaines; Vice-President, Beverly Lobsiger; Secretary,
Irene Schwartz, Treasurer; Diana Crist. Mr. Byrnes, our
teacher and principal, is our worthy class sponsor.
We participated in a contest with the Sophomores to see
which class could sell the most map:azines. Although the
Sophomores beat us bv a wide marrin it helped raise the
Freshmen class fund.
We have had one class party this year and ti.at was a
skatin-- party at "Si.nset" in Decatur. We are plannlnr to have
another party before school is ou which we are sure will be
as much fun as the first one.
We went on a field trip to the New Sentinel buildinr: in
Fort Wayne. We all enjoyed it very much and found om how
our news-papers, which we read daily, are printed.
Most of us are plonninr to be seniors and graduate from
Monroe High School in "51".

^BASKETBALL
The year of 1947-1948 has not been to successful as far
as winning games has been concerned, but we have mastered
many things that we feel has developed more character than
just winning games. There were five Seniors on the squad:
Weldon Nussbaum, Lee Moser, Chester Hirschy, Paul Nussbaum,
and Charles Habeg,7er,
The team won 8 and lost 14 games for their season's record,

SOFTBALL
The team as a whole had a food year, they had a lot of
fun in Softball and baseball. They won 6 and lost 2 games
in Softball and won 1 and lost 1 in baseball.
There were six seniors on the regular squad; the rest of
the teaita was mad* up of under classmen. Seniors were as

The underclassmen were: Claren Lehman, Milton Habegt'er,
Byron Liechty, who are Juniors. Sophomores: Robert Ehrsam,
