FACT SHEETThe Professional Tour Guide Association of San Antonio was officially formed in January 1994. Prior to its inception, a diverse group of professionals from the tourism industry had met for approximately two years as a Roundtable. The Roundtable had been formed to promote the tourism industry and to raise the level of excellence in the presentation of our city’s history, culture and attractions by local tour guides. The Professional Tour Guide As-sociation was begun to train, educate, and support professional tour guides.

Association objectives are: (1) to promote the highest degree of professionalism for tour guides through commitment to ethical standards, continuing education, and professional certification; (2) to raise public and private awareness of the tour guide profession; (3) to address issues regarding the tourism industry with the appropriate private / public / govern-mental groups; and (4) to provide a forum to enable its members to give our city’s visitors an educational and entertaining experience that embodies the Spirit of San Antonio.

The Association provides a program of professional education, and with the underwriting of the San Antonio Conservation Society, held the inaugural Professional Tour Guide Training and Certification course in January 1995. The class, consisting of students with experience ranging from 25 years to less than one year, graduated 67 guides entitled to use the desig-nation of Certified Professional Guide (CPG) and to wear the distinctive association certi-fication pin. Uniquely qualified to present the perspective of front-line professionals in the tourism industry, the association has offered a positive and constructive voice in communi-ty discussions on the future of Alamo Plaza, the issue of casino gambling, preservation of the Riverwalk, downtown motorcoach parking, and other topics. Working with other pro-fessional organizations in the tourism industry and related businesses, the association is poised to remain a positive voice in promoting San Antonio as a top American destination city for families, tour and travel, and convention groups.

Membership is open to Certified Professional Guide Members, Sustaining Members, As-sociate Members, and Corporate Members, businesses and organizations who by their sponsorship lend prestige and experience to the association.

  • Access Destination Services

ACCESS Destination Services is a consortium of experienced, local, owner-operated DMCs that offer national reach and local expertise. Each ACCESS partner office is owned and operated by experienced industry veterans with established relationships in the desti-nations they serve.

The future of Destination Management lies in clients’ desire for a national DMC partner that offers creativity, consistent service, standard contract terms and local ownership in multiple destinations. They don’t want to have to recreate the wheel from one program to another when visiting various destinations. What ACCESS has done differently than other national DMC companies is align themselves with the Best of the Best in each destination. Each office in the ACCESS brand is the premier DMC in its destination and it is a distinct honor to be included in the ACCESS family. At ACCESS, we don’t just focus on what we do – but WHY we do it. We believe in this idea so strongly that we’ve made it our brand promise:

“To inspire people through shared experiences.”

We’re San Antonio Detours, a family business that loves to have fun!

We got our start in Austin, but many of our guests loved their experience so much that they want-ed us to come with them when they went to San Antonio. We started spending a lot of time in San Antonio and fell in love with not only its deep history, but its new districts and hidden gems. Now it’s like our second home, and we now have a second family of guides and entertainers that love nothing more than to show off their city.

Our public tours focus on small groups – less than 11 – to give you a genuine and intimate expe-rience. We also work with larger groups on a private basis and corporate groups of up to 200. No matter what size the group, we want to make sure everyone feels like our good friend, hence our tagline… “Come as strangers, leave as friends”
