Vol. 15 No. 4 December 2010 Meeting with Executives of the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) An SIIT delegation, led by Prof. Dr. Chongrak Polprasert, the Director of SIIT, made a courtesy visit to meet the Executives of the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) on October 12, 2010. The SIIT Director expressed the Institute’s sincere appreciation to FTI for their contributions and support given to SIIT. Discussions were held on more collaboration with industrial companies, including joint research programs, training opportunities for SIIT students, and more employment of SIIT graduates. Academic Collaboration with Universities in Taiwan Prof. Dr. Chongrak Polprasert, the SIIT Director, visited Chia Nan University of Pharmacy and Science, Tainan, and Cheng Shiu University, Kaoh Siung, Taiwan, during 4-8 October 2010, to explore academic collaboration which includes: student/faculty exchange, joint/dual degree programs, and joint research projects. At Chia Nan University of Pharmacy and Science, Prof. Dr. Chongrak met Prof. Dr. Li-Jen Hsu, the President of the University, and Prof. Dr. Jing-Song Chang, the Dean of the Office of Research and Development. SIIT signed a general MOU with Chia Nan University of Pharmacy and Science in May 2009. Prof. Dr. Chongrak also met Prof. Dr. Jung-Hua Kuo, the Dean of the College of Pharmacy and Director of the Institute of Pharmaceutical Science, Prof. Dr. Ray Yueh- Min Huang, the Dean of the College of Health and Information, Prof. Dr. Suen-Zone Lee, the Dean of the College of Sustainable Environment, Dr. Chia-Yuan Chang, and Prof. Dr. Jing-Song Chang, to explore academic collaboration. At Cheng Shiu University, Prof. Dr. Chongrak had a meeting with Prof. Dr. Jui-Chang Kung, the President of the University, and Prof. Dr. Shuenn-Ren Cheng, the Dean of the Office of International Affairs. Academic collaboration in the civil engineering field was discussed with Prof. Dr. Huang-Tsan Chou, the Dean of the School of Civil Engineering and Engineering Informatics. Prof. Dr. Chongrak also met Prof. Dr. Guo-Ping Chang-Chien, Professor and Director of the Super Micro Mass Research and Technology Center, to discuss research projects on hazardous waste management. Meeting with Executives of the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI)An SIIT delegation, led by Prof. Dr. Chongrak Polprasert, the Director of SIIT, made a courtesy visit to meet theExecutives of the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) on October 12, 2010. Academic Cooperation with Research Institutions in JapanProf. Dr. Chongrak Polprasert, the Director of SIIT, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Taweep Chaisomphob, the Head of School of Civil Engineeringand Technology, and Ms. Peechalika Khattiya, Chief of Corporate Relations Division, visited the Central Research Institute ofElectric Power Industry (CRIEPI), the Tokyo Institute of Technology (Tokyo Tech), and the National Institute for EnvironmentalStudies (NIES), in Tokyo, Japan, during 28-29 October 2010, to discuss academic and research cooperation.

Visit to Central Research Institute of Electric Power Industry (CRIEPI)

The SIIT delegation, led by Prof. Dr. Chongrak Polprasert,visited CRIEPI on 28 October 2010 to meet Mr. MasahiroKakumu, the President of CRIEPI, Dr. Akito Nitta, Dr.Shirabe Akita, Mr. Yoshinobu Okabe, and Ms. YokoKobayashi. CRIEPI and SIIT agreed to renew theagreement on academic and research cooperation.Collaboration on a nuclear energy program, studentinternships at CRIEPI, and the visiting faculty program atSIIT were discussed.

Visit to Tokyo Institute of Technology (Tokyo Tech)

On 29 October 2010, Prof. Dr. Chongrak Polprasert and Ms.Peechalika Khattiya, visited the Tokyo Institute of Technology(Tokyo Tech) to meet Prof. Dr. Ken Okazaki, the Dean of Schoolof Engineering and the Head of TAIST Tokyo Tech Committeeof Tokyo Institute of Technology, Prof. Takashi Kitahara, Prof.Nobuo Fujii, Prof. Masaaki Suzuki, Mr. Tsugihiro Shimura, andMs. Akiko Terauchi. The TAIST MOU for the next cooperationphase, which will begin in early 2011, was discussed. SIITexpressed interest to participate in the new joint programs onEnvironmental Engineering and Biotechnology, in addition tothe ongoing Master of Engineering in Information andCommunication Technology for Embedded System Program.Student and faculty member exchange programs were alsoconsidered.

Visit to National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES)

Prof. Dr. Chongrak Polprasert, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Taweep Chaisomphob, and Ms. Peechalika Khattiya visited NIES on 29October 2010 to meet Prof. Dr. Shinichiro Ohgaki, the President of NIES, Dr. Hideo Harasawa, Dr. Junichi Fujino, Dr.Shuichi Ashina, Dr. Yoshifumi Yasuoka, and Ms. Maiko Suda.

Introductions to NIES, the Social and Environmental Systems, and theLow-Carbon Asia Pacific Project, were presented by Prof. Dr. ShinichiroOhgaki and his colleagues. Prof. Dr. Chongrak Polprasert gave a briefpresentation on SIIT and its research and development programs.Summer training of SIIT students and extended training programs atNIES were discussed. SIIT also invited researchers from NIES to visitSIIT as visiting faculty members to give lectures/seminars to SIITstudents. Prof. Dr. Chongrak also gave a special lecture on “EmergingEnvironmental Issues for ASEAN - with emphasis on hazardous wastes,phosphorus, and global warming” to NIES executives and researchers.

Academic Cooperation with Toyohashi University of Technology, JapanProf. Dr. Chongrak Polprasert, the Director of Sirindhorn InternationalInstitute of Technology (SIIT), visited Toyohashi University ofTechnology (TUT), Japan, during 25-30 November 2010, to attendthe 9th International Cooperation Center for Engineering EducationDevelopment (ICCEED) Open Forum and to sign a renewed exchangeagreement between SIIT and TUT. The visit was intended tostrengthen the academic cooperation and seek more collaborationwith TUT. Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Training SeminarThe School of Civil Engineering and Technology (CET) of Sirindhorn InternationalInstitute of Technology, with support from Arun Chaiseri Consulting EngineersCo., Ltd. and the Engineering Institute of Thailand under His Majesty the King’sPatronage, organized a Continuing Professional Development (CPD) TrainingSeminar entitled “Applications of the Finite Element Method in Civil Engineering”

at the ElephantTower in Bangkok,on 16 October 2010.Prof. Dr. SomnukTangtermsir ikul ,Assoc. Prof. Dr.Taweep Chaisomphob, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pruettha Nanakorn, andAssoc. Prof. Dr. Amorn Pimanmas from CET shared their knowledgeand experiences in applications of the Finite Element Method incivil engineering with 40 participants of the training seminar. Theparticipants included engineers, researchers, government officers,staff of private companies, faculty members, and students.

Outstanding Young Researcher Awards fromThammasat University

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Jirachai Buddhakulsomsiri received an Outstanding Young Researcher Award of theAcademic Year 2009 from Thammasat University. The award was presented at the “ThammasatUniversity Researchers’ Day” celebrated on 26 November 2010, at the Sofitel Centara Grand, Bangkok.Dr. Jirachai is a full-time faculty member of the School of Manufacturing Systems and MechanicalEngineering at Sirindhorn International Institute of Technology (SIIT). He received his Ph.D. in IndustrialEngineering from Oregon State University, USA. Dr. Jirachai’s research focuses on three main areas:applied operations research; data mining and statistical data analysis; and systems simulation, modeling,and analysis.

Thammasat University also presented an Outstanding Young ResearcherAward to Dr. Pongsak Choktaweekarn at the “Thammasat UniversityResearchers’ Day” celebration. Dr. Pongsak is a researcher of theConstruction and Maintenance Technology Research Center (CONTEC)of SIIT. He obtained his B.Eng., M.Eng., and Ph.D. in Civil Engineeringfrom SIIT, Thammasat University, Thailand. Dr. Pongsak’s researchinterests include advanced construction materials, mass concrete, rollercompacted concrete, and durability of concrete structures.

Very Good Research Award from Thammasat UniversityAssoc. Prof. Dr. Thanaruk Theeramunkong, the Head of School of Information, Computer andCommunication Technology at SIIT, received a “Very Good Research Award” of the Academic Year2010 from Thammasat University for “Research on Machine Learning Techniques on Natural LanguageProcessing and Their Applications to Assistive Technology”. The award was presented at the “ThammasatUniversity Researchers’ Day” celebrated on 26 November 2010, at the Sofitel Centara Grand, Bangkok.

This research investigates machine learning (ML) techniques in two applications: (1) Thai text processingand (2) speech assistive technology. The ML applications of Thai text processing include kernel methodsfor text classification and automatic unknown word recognition while those of assistive technologyinvolve speech assessment of impaired speech, especially Dysarthric speech and spelling speechrecognition. The research was conducted with three SIIT graduates: Dr. Ithipan Methasate, Dr. Prakasith Kayasith, and Dr.Chutima Pisarn, and one SIIT Ph.D. student, Mr. Jakkrit TeCho. The research was conducted with financial support from theThailand Research Fund (TRF), the National Electronics and Computer Technology Center (NECTEC), the National ResearchCouncil of Thailand (NRCT), and the Commission on Higher Education (CHE).

Distinguished Research Award from Thammasat UniversityThammasat University granted a “Distinguished Research Award” to Asst. Prof. Dr. Veeris Ammarapala from the School ofManagement Technology of SIIT, at the “Thammasat University Researchers’ Day” celebrated on 26 November 2010, at theSofitel Centara Grand, Bangkok. This award was granted to Dr. Veeris to express recognition of his commitment to the

Thammasat University research community.

From March 2010, Dr. Veeris Ammarapala, the Head of the TransportationResearch Center (TREC) at SIIT, and his research team have beenworking on a research project “Bangkok Metropolitan Roads RoutineMaintenance Management System”, which was funded by the BangkokMetropolitan Authority (BMA). The objective of this project is to createa Decision Support System (DSS) and a Geographic Information System(GIS) to assist BMA in bettering their roads routine maintenancemanagement.

Prof. Hirun Radeesri, an Honorary Council Member of the Thammasat UniversityCouncil, presents the award to Asst. Prof. Dr. Veeris Ammarapala.

Visiting Faculty Member from the University of Tokyo, JapanAsst. Prof. Dr. Nobuhiro Chijiwa joined SIIT as a visiting faculty member of the School of CivilEngineering and Technology (CET) from November 2010 to March 2011. In the 2nd Semester/2010, Dr. Chijiwa conducts a special course in civil engineering on “Stock Management forSustainable Urban Regeneration” for fourth-year undergraduate students and graduate studentsof CET.

Dr. Chijiwa currently is an assistant professor and a member of the Global Center of Excellencefor Sustainable Urban Regeneration, at the University of Tokyo, Japan. Dr. Chijiwa received hisB.Eng., M.Eng., and Ph.D. in Engineering from the University of Tokyo. His research focuses onconcrete engineering and structural assessment of the existing structures.

2009 TU Award for Outstanding Thesis in Science and TechnologyDr. Akara Sopharak received a 2009 TU Award for Outstanding Thesis in Science and Technology from Thammasat University.Dr. Akara Sopharak received her Ph.D. in Technology from Sirindhorn International Institute of Technology (SIIT), Thammasat

University, in academic year 2009. Her thesis entitled “Automatic Exudates Detectionof Diabetic Retinopathy from Digital Images” was conducted under the supervisionof Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bunyarit Uyyanonvara, the School of Information, Computer,and Communication Technology. Based on the research outcomes, Dr. Akara co-authored with her advisors, to publish 5 papers in international journals, 1 paperin a national journal, 5 papers in international conference proceedings, and 1paper in national conference proceedings.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Taweep Chaisomphob, the TU Vice Rector for Research and Educational Services,presents the 2009 TU Award for Outstanding Thesis in Science and Technology to Dr. AkaraSopharak at the 2009 TU Outstanding Thesis Seminar, held on 30 November 2010, at PueyUngphakorn Library, Thammasat University, Rangsit Center.

Faculty Promotion – Associate ProfessorsAsst. Prof. Dr. Pakorn Opaprakasit and Asst. Prof. Dr. Jirachai Buddhakulsomsiri were promoted to theacademic rank of Associate Professor in October 2010.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pakorn Opaprakasit is now the Assistant Director for Admission and Public Relations ofSIIT, and a full-time faculty member of the School of Bio-Chemical Engineering and Technology. Dr.Pakorn received an Outstanding Young Researcher Award of the Academic Year 2007 from ThammasatUniversity in November 2008. He attained his B.Sc. (1st Class Honors with Gold Medal) in Chemistry fromChiang Mai University, Thailand, M.S. in Materials Science and Engineering (Polymer Option) and Ph.D.in Materials Science and Engineering, both from the Pennsylvania State University, Pennsylvania, USA.

Dr. Pakorn currently undertakes research related to biomedical materials, nanomaterials, biofuels, polymer characterizations,and spectroscopic characterizations of materials and fuels, which is funded by various agencies, namely the Thailand ResearchFund (TRF), the National Research Council of Thailand (NRCT), the Thailand Toray Science Foundation (TTSF), the NationalMetal and Materials Technology Center (MTEC), PURAC Corporate, the Royal Thai Government (RTG) - Asian Institute ofTechnology (AIT) Joint Research Fund, and Thammasat University. Dr. Pakorn currently supervises two master’s degreestudents and three doctoral students with thesis topics related to lactic acid-based biopolymers, electrospun polymeric nanofibers,magnetic nanoparticles as drug delivery materials, and production and characterizations of biodiesel.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Jirachai Buddhakulsomsiri is a full-time faculty member of the School of Manufacturing Systems and MechanicalEngineering at SIIT. Dr. Jirachai recently received an Outstanding Young Researcher Award of the Academic Year 2009 from

Thammasat University. He received his B.Eng. in Chemical Engineering from Chulalongkorn University,Thailand, M.S. in Industrial Engineering, M.S. in Statistics, and Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering fromOregon State University, USA. Prior to joining SIIT, he was an assistant professor in the Departmentof Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering, University of Michigan-Dearborn, USA.

Dr. Jirachai’s research focuses on three main areas: applied operations research, data mining andstatistical data analysis, and systems simulation, modeling and analysis. He has received fundingfrom Thailand Research Fund (TRF), National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA),and Thammasat University. He currently supervises three master’s degree students with thesistopics related to vehicle routing problems and short haul transportation cost estimation for Thaiagricultural products.

SIIT Graduate Receives 2010 Fulbright Open CompetitionScholarship for Further Study in USA

Ms. Dangfun Pornnoparat, a graduate of SIIT, received a 2010 Fulbright Open Competition scholarshipto study for a master’s degree in the field of Operations Management (Supply Chain Management) atthe Department of Management Science and Engineering, Stanford University, USA. Ms. Dangfungraduated with a B.Sc. in Information Technology from the School of Information and ComputerTechnology, Sirindhorn International Institute of Technology (SIIT), Thammasat University, in 2007.After graduation, Ms. Dangfun worked at Accenture in Systems Integration Consulting for three years.

SIIT Doctoral Students Join Research Team in FranceDuring 3 November – 22 December, 2010, Mr. Boonyarit Chatthong and Mr. Ponkris Klaywittaphat, who are doctoralstudents of SIIT under the supervision of Asst. Prof. Dr. Thawatchai Onjun, joined a nuclear fusion research team

at the Tore Supra Tokamak Research Laboratory,Cadarache, France, under a cooperation agreement inthe field of magnetic fusion research betweenCommissariat à l’Energie Atomique (France) andThailand Institute of Nuclear Technology/SirindhornInternational Institute of Technology (Thailand). Thisresearch agreement aims to strengthen research in thearea of nuclear fusion between France and Thailand.Nuclear fusion has been regarded as one possiblealternative energy source for the future. Both studentsfocused their research on the topics of energy andparticle transport barriers (to enhance nuclear fusionperformance) and pellet injection (to refuel and controlnuclear reactions).

Telecom Prototype AwardSirindhorn International Institute of Technology (SIIT),Thammasat University, received a “Telecom PrototypeAward” for a computer game entitled “DogsperateEscape” at the Telecom Innovation Award & Exhibition2010, held by the Telecommunications Research andIndustrial Development Institute (TRIDI) at theEsplanade Ratchadapisek, Bangkok, during 26-27November 2010. “Dogsperate Escape” was developedby an SIIT Team comprising Mr. Kalanyu Zintus-art, Mr.Supat Saetia, Mr. Varichmaes Pongparnich, Asst. Prof.Dr. Cholwich Nattee, and Dr. Surapa Thiemjarus fromthe School of Information, Computer, andCommunication Technology (ICT) at SIIT.

Dogsperate Escape is a visually attractive exercise game that allowsthe player to perform various activities, provoking physical exerciseswith a memorable experience. The character in the game can becontrolled using a wearable e-AR sensor – a wireless BSN deviceattached to the user’s ear. While playing the game, the players needto perform multiple activities such as tilt left, tilt right, and jumpingcontinuously, giving them good exercise while having a fun andexciting experience through the gameplay.

Three senior projects of the School of Information, Computer, and Communication Technology (ICT) at Sirindhorn InternationalInstitute of Technology (SIIT), Thammasat University, won awards from the “IT One Innovation Awards Competition 2010”.

Out of approximately 90 teams from all over Thailand, 20 teams (including 3 teams from SIIT) were selected to present theirprojects at the Holiday Inn Silom, Bangkok, on 18 December 2010. Finally, 1 first prize, 2 second prizes and 3 third prizes wereawarded.

The project entitled “Real-time Analysis of Activity and Gait Impairment Analysis with an Ear-worn Sensor”, conducted by Mr.Kalanyu Zintus-art and Mr. Varichmaes Pongparnich, under the supervision of Dr. Surapa Thiemjarus, won the 1st Prize Awardof 40,000 baht.

The second project entitled “HCI Application for AidingChildren with Mental Disorders” conducted by Mr. SupaketThanadtang, Mr. Jirayuth Sirisungsuchol, and Ms.Benjarak Krasantisuk, under the supervision of Dr. SurapaThiemjarus, won a 3rd Prize Award of 10,000 baht.

English Essay Competition: “ThinkTank Young Leadership Award”An English Essay Competition “ThinkTank Young Leadership Award” was organized by the MBAThinkTank Inc., during August- September 2010. The topic of essay was “My Leadership Contributions to SIIT and/or Thailand, Both Inside and Outside ofClass”, which focused on the leader’s role in academic and/or extracurricular achievements, and the ways the contributionsenhance the community in Thailand and/or the public reputation of SIIT. The awards were granted to recognize students whodemonstrate remarkable academic and/or extracurricular achievements.

Donation to the Sirindhorn TechnologyScholarship Fund

Mr. Pheeraphat Thepparak, a fourth-year student of the School of Information,Computer, and Communication Technology, on behalf of his family, donated 65,000baht to the “Sirindhorn Technology Scholarship Fund”, on 23 November 2010. Prof.Dr. Chongrak Polprasert, the Director of SIIT, expressed the Institute’s appreciation toMr. Pheeraphat’s family for the donation.

SIIT Automech Club Participates in TSAE Auto Challenge 2010-11An SIIT team from the Automech Club of SIIT participated in the “TSAE Auto Challenge 2010-2011”, hosted by the ThailandSociety of Automotive Engineering, during 10-12 December 2010. Forty teams from universities in Thailand participated inthis competition. The SIIT team, led by Mr. Patcharaphon Wongwetsawat, Mr. Maroay Phlernjai, and Mr. PhakhawatKoocharoenprasit from the MechanicalEngineering Curriculum of the School ofManufacturing Systems and MechanicalEngineering, was comprised of first-,second-, third-, and fourth-yearengineering students, from allengineering disciplines of SIIT. The SIITteam was ranked in 25th place for thecompetition. The knowledge andexperience gained from this competitionare valuable to the students.

2nd ASIIT Director’s Cup Golf CompetitionThe Alumni Association of Sirindhorn International Institute of Technology (ASIIT) held the 2nd ASIIT Director’s Cup GolfCompetition at Lam Luk Ka Golf and Country Club, Pathum Thani, on 18 September 2010. Prof. Dr. Chongrak Polprasert, theSIIT Director, presided over the opening ceremony of the golf competition. The ASIIT Director’s Cup Golf Competition is heldannually to raise funds for supporting current SIIT students in the form of scholarships, and to bring together SIIT alumni wholove to play golf. An amount of 39,000 baht from this golf competition was contributed to the “SIIT Alumni Fund” which will beused to provide scholarships to SIIT students. Mr. Tispol Nakornsri, the ASIIT President, represented the association topresent the contribution to the SIIT Director, Prof. Dr. Chongrak Polprasert.

ASIIT Annual “10-Pin Championship” Bowling CompetitionThe ASIIT Annual “10-Pin Championship” Bowling Competition washeld at the Blu-O Ratchayothin on 20 November 2010. This annualevent provides an opportunity for SIIT alumni, faculty members,and SIIT students to get together and play bowling games. Allparticipants joined a dinner and karaoke at the Blu-O Ratchayothin.The ASIIT raised a fund of 10,000 baht from this event for donatingto SIIT to support a flooding recovery project of SIIT students.

Construction of a Multi-Purpose Building atBaan Huay Ra Ping School, Tak Province

SIIT Volunteer Club and Issara Sanfun Group ofThammasat University jointly undertook constructionof a multi-purpose building at Baan Huay Ra PingSchool, Tambon Pa Wor, Amphoe Mae Sot, TakProvince. From 18 to 30 October 2010, 44 SIITstudents volunteered their labor for constructing a 4x12m2 building. This building will be used as a classroomfor kindergarten students and it can be also used as acommunity meeting place. The students also helpedrepair walls of an old cafeteria and repaintedplayground equipment. This project benefits educationof the children, and also helps strengthen the localcommunity.

Aiding the flooded community in Sena, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya province9-12 December 2010

In October 2010, there was a huge flood disaster in several areas in Thailand. Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya province, which isa neighboring community of Thammasat University, was one of the affected areas. A voluntary activity to recover the communityfrom the flood disaster, in terms of building structure, and also cheer up the locals and children, was co-organized by theStudent Committee of Sirindhorn International Institute of Technology (SIIT) and the Mechanical Engineering Department ofKing Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT). The SIIT team was led by Mr. Dusadee Tuenudomseel, a fourth-year student of the School of Manufacturing Systems and Mechanical Engineering. The KMUTT team was led by Mr. Chanwith

Buntoengpesuchsakul, the representative of the fourth-yearstudents of the Mechanical Engineering Department of KMUTT.

The participants of this voluntary activity consisted of 39 SIITstudents and 130 KMUTT students. They were separated intothree groups with an assignment to help the primary schoolsin the Sena area: Wat Ban Pan (Srirattananukul) School, WatKradongtong (Piboonprasit) School, and Wat Poh(Jamwittayakal) School. The activity was partially supportedby SIIT (20,000 baht), the Alumni Association of SirindhornInternational Institute of Technology (ASIIT, 10,000 baht), anddonations from SIIT faculty and staff members, students andtheir guardians (more than 20,000 baht).

The activity was successfully completed. Society was aided and the students have gained a lot of good relationships andappreciation from the local communities. Moreover, this activity has strengthened cooperation and unity between the twoinstitutes.

TU Cheer Song Contest 2010The SIIT Music and Chorus Club participated in the “TU Cheer Song Contest 2010” on December 15, 2010 at Gymnasium 5,Thammasat University – Rangsit Campus. The “TU Cheer Song Contest” is a traditional chorus singing competition, in which

students from most faculties in ThammasatUniversity participate as teams, annually.

This year, an SIIT team of 33 studentsparticipated in the competition. Ourstudents have learned to manage their freetime, from study to practice of TU songs,and also gained good experience fromteamwork.

Green Krathong ContestA “Green Krathong Contest” was held by the SIIT Student Affairs Division during 18-19November 2010, under the supervision of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Chalie Charoenlarpnopparut, theAssistant Director for Student Affairs of SIIT. Thiscontest is one of the student projects to promote ThaiArts and Culture, as well as to promote a sense ofenvironmental conservation among SIIT students,faculty members, and staff, through the usage ofrecycled materials for making krathongs. There were11 krathongs from recycled materials submitted forthe contest, and 488 voters participated in the “PopularVote” session.

TU Loy Krathong Festival 2010Thammasat University organized the “Loy Krathong Festival 2010” at the Rangsit Campus during 19-21 November 2010. Aspart of extra-curricular activities, SIIT students, led by Mr. Nithi Amonchailertrat (the President of the SIIT Student Committee2010) and Ms. Thamon Benjapongsapun, participated in the Krathong Competition, the “Nang Noppamas” Beauty QueenContest, and the “Gentlemen in Traditional Thai Costume” Contest. Associate Professor Dr. Chalie Charoenlarpnopparut, theAssistant Director for Student Affairs, participated in this festival as the representative of the Directorof SIIT.

This year, Ms. Chutimon Boonchokchuay, a first-year student,was the SIIT representative participating in the “NangNoppamas” beauty queen contest. Mr. Jan Tietzel, an exchangestudent from Techniche Universität Damstadt, Germany, wasvoted to be the SIIT representative in the “Gentlemen inTraditional Thai Costume” contest, by 29 SIIT exchange studentswho attended the “Thai Study” class on 12 December 2010.Congratulations to Mr. Jan Tietzel for receiving the “PopularVote” prize from the contest.

In the evening of 19 November 2010, the SIIT Student Affairs Division organized an activity “Design & Decorate My Krathong”at the first floor of the SIIT Main Building. This activity was aimed to encourage SIIT students (Thai and internationalstudents) to share their experience of designing and decorating a krathong made from natural materials, and also to supportThai traditional arts and culture. More than ninety students, faculty members, and staff participated in this activity.

Ms. Nisarat Emklang and Ms. Arisara Pongtanupattana(sophomore students of the Management TechnologyCurriculum) as the “Yacht” team, achieved the 1st prizeand 1st rank popular vote. Ms. Nutchana Anantakoon, Ms.Wasamas Leakpech, and Ms. Nicha Pitisongswat (juniorstudents of the Information Technology Curriculum) asthe “Save the World” team, achieved the 2nd prize. Mr.Nithi Amonchailertrat and Mr. Wisanu Tuenudomseel(junior students of the Electronics and CommunicationCurriculum) as the “Nu Huad – Heal the Earth” team,achieved the prize of 2nd rank popular vote.

Father’s Day Card Contest 2010From November 15 to December 3, 2010, the SIIT Student AffairsDivision organized an activity “Father’s Day Card Contest” with thethemes “Long Live the King” and “Special Thanks to My Dad” tocelebrate the “National Father’s Day” (5th December). There were642 SIIT students who participated in this activity as 17 contestantsand 625 voters.

For the theme “Long Live the King”, Ms. ChayapatBoonkoet achieved the 1st prize, Ms. Naruemol

Ratanamalakul achieved the 1st rank of popular vote,and Ms. Pattaraporn Theawthua achieved the 2nd

rank of popular vote.

For the theme “Special Thanks to My Dad”, Ms. Sunhaporn Sribanditmongkol achievedthe 1st prize, Mr. Surat Phinhongthong achieved the 1st rank of popular vote, andMs. Wichuta Roekmongkol achieved the 2nd rank of popular vote.
