On this occasion, donations were presented to Her Royal Highness Princess for her foundations. Meeting with Executives of the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) Prof. Dr. Somkit Lertpaithoon, Rector of Thammasat University (TU) and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Sirindhorn International Institute of Technology (SIIT), led SIIT executives and faculty members to visit the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) on January 18, 2012. The purposes of this visit were to greet the Chairman of FTI on the New Year occasion and to strengthen the relationship between SIIT and FTI. Presently, there are several collaborative research projects between SIIT and FTI, e.g., the Lean Enterprises project, the Innovation Coupons project, and the effects of ASEAN Economics Community on the Thai SMEs project. In the meeting, both parties discussed ways to create more collaboration in a near future. Meeting at Maezawa Industries, Inc. and Nippon KeidanrenProf. Dr. Chongrak Polprasert (SIIT Director), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Rachnarin Nitisoravut (Asst. Director for Corporate Relations andAcademic Quality Assurance), and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sandhya Babel were invited by Maezawa Industries, Inc. to visit Japan ona collaborative research project sponsored by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO)during February 21-24, 2012. On this occasion, the SIIT Director paid a courtesy visit to Nippon Keidanren to report on SIIToperations during the past year. Ms. Nobuko Sanui, Managing Director of Nippon Keidanren and honorary trustee of SIIT, wasalso invited to attend the 20th anniversary ceremony of the establishment of SIIT on June 28, 2012. While in Japan, SIITdelegates also visited Saitama Prefecture Bureau of Enterprise and Saitama University to discuss international developmentactivities and to strengthen academic collaboration, respectively.

Meeting with Executives of the Siam Cement FoundationOn January 4, 2012, Prof. Dr. Chongrak Polprasert (SIIT Director) and SIIT executives visited the Siam Cement (SCG)Foundation. The purposes of this visit were to strengthen the relationship between the two organizations and to seek

future collaborations. The SCG Foundation has given scholarshipsto international undergraduate and graduate students to study atSIIT for many years. The scholarship recipients are mainly fromASEAN countries.

MOU for Education Loans between TCRB and SIITOn March 1, 2012, a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for education loans for tuition fees and other expenses related toundergraduate and graduate education was signed between the Thai Credit Retail Bank Public Company Limited (TCRB),represented by Mr. Mongkol Leelatum (CEO) and Ms. Pasprapa Chaiprapa (Director of Branch Network Department), andSirindhorn International Institute of Technology (SIIT), Thammasat University, represented by Prof. Dr. Chongrak Polprasert(Director) and Asst. Prof. Dr. Veeris Ammarapala (Asst. Director for Student Affairs and Alumni Relations). Interested SIITstudents can apply for an education loan from TCRB starting in the second semester of the 2011 academic year.

2012 Thammasat Rice PlantingProf. Dr. Chongrak Polprasert (SIIT Director), Asst. Prof. Dr. Veeris Ammarapala (Asst. Director for Student Affairs and AlumniRelations), and Asst. Prof. Dr. Suthathip Suanmali (MT faculty member) participated in the Thammasat rice planting (orThammasat Taam Na) hosted by Thammasat community at the rice field of Thammasat University (TU), Rangsit Center, onFebruary 8, 2012. SIIT students, including German exchange students, and more than 500 TU students participated in thisactivity. The rice harvested from this activity will be cooked and served to new TU students on the TU orientation ceremonyof the academic year 2012. This event also provided a good opportunity to learn about Thai culture and to create unity amongstudents.

Asst. Prof. Dr. Surapa Thiemjarus, an ICT faculty member, received an“Excellent Thesis Award” of the year 2011 from the National Research Councilof Thailand (NRCT) for her doctoral thesis entitled “A Framework forContextual Data Fusion in Body Sensor Networks.” The thesis was conductedduring her doctoral study at Imperial College London, UK.

A PhD graduate of Prof. Dr. Stanislav S. Makhanov’s, Asst. Prof. Dr.Weerachai Anotaipaiboon, also received a “Good Thesis Award” for hisdoctoral thesis entitled “New Algorithms for Tool Path Generation andOptimization for Five-axis NC Machining.” He is currently a faculty memberof the Faculty of Engineering, Thammasat University.

True Innovation Award 2011Asst. Prof. Dr. Surapa Thiemjarus (from the School of Information, Computer, and Communication Technology (ICT)), IntaniThanapisitikul, Dr. Benny Lo, and Prof. Guang-Zhong Yang received the bronze prize from the True Innovation Award 2011 inthe Inno Tree category for their project entitled “Pervasive Monitoring System for Patients and Elderly with Body SensorNetwork and Mobile Phone.” The award presentation was organized by True Corporation Public Company Limited, incollaboration with the Technopreneurship and Innovation Program (Graduation School of Chulalongkorn University), andCNBC (Asia Pacific), at the CenterPoint Playhouse, Central World, Bangkok, on January 17, 2012.

At the above event, 19 outstanding inventions (out of 1,291applications) were given awards in two categories: IdeaSeed Award and Inno Tree Award. The Idea Seed Awardis for innovative concepts and business plans while the InnoTree Award is for actual works of innovation that havealready been realized.

Thesis Award from the National Research Council of Thailand

Faculty Promotion – ProfessorAssoc. Prof. Dr. Stanislav S. Makhanov and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Thananchai Leephakpreeda were promoted to the academic rankof Professor in August and October 2011, respectively.

Prof. Dr. Stanislav S. Makhanov is a full-time faculty member of the School of Information, Computer, and CommunicationTechnology (ICT). He received his M.Appl.Math. from Moscow State University (Russia) Diploma in English Language fromMoscow Institute of Foreign Languages (Russia), and Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from the Computing Center of the RussianAcademy of Science (Russia).

Dr. Makhanov received an Outstanding Research Award in the academic year2006, and Very Good Research Awards in the academic years 2007 and 2009,from Thammasat University. He is currently supervising four doctoral studentson research topics related to robotics, image processing, pattern recognition,and grid generation. He is also a research mentor for two post doctoral projects.Dr. Makhanov is a recipient of multiple Royal Golden Jubilee Scholarships andresearch funding from Thailand Research Fund, National Science and TechnologyDevelopment Agency, and Office of Higher Education Commission. His biographyhas been published in “Who’s Who in the World,” “Who’s Who in Engineering,”and “Who’s Who in Asia.”

Prof. Dr. Thananchai Leephakpreeda is currently the Head of the School of Manufacturing Systems and Mechanical Engineering(MSME) and Coordinator of the Mechanical Engineering (ME) Curriculum. He received a Very Good Research Award in theacademic year 2006, and the Award-Winning Book of Thammasat University for the book entitled “Dynamic Systems andControl” in 2002, and the Thailand’s Young Scientist Award 2002 from the Foundation for the Promotionof Science and Technology under the Patronage of His Majesty the King, Thailand. He also holdsthree patents: (1) Speed/Direction Measurement Device of Airflow via DC Servo Motor, (2) Speed-Sensories Control System of Servo DC Motor, and (3) Calibration Device for Weighing Capsules viaVacuum Effect. The first two patents were awarded in 2007 and the last in 2009.

Prof. Dr. Thananchai received his B.Eng. in Mechanical Engineering from Chulalongkorn University,and his M.S. and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from The University of Akron (Ohio, USA). Hisresearch interests include process control and modeling, robotics, expert control systems, neuralnetworks and fuzzy logics, system identification, and numerical simulation and optimization. Hereceived research funding from the National Research Council of Thailand (NRCT), the ThailandResearch Fund (TRF), and the National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA).

Faculty Promotion – Assistant Professor

His research interests include Information Technology Management, Electronic Business, Supply ChainManagement, Outsourcing, and Management of Organizational Business Processes. He receivedfunding from the Office of the Higher Education Commission and the Thailand Research Fund (TRF) toconduct a research project with several MT and IE faculty members entitled “A Study on the Need forLogistics Personnel in Hospitals.” He is currently supervising a doctoral student on a research topicrelated to Information Technology Management and Electronic Business.

Dr. Pisit Chanvarasuth was promoted to the academic rank of Assistant Professor in August 2011.Assistant Professor Dr. Pisit is a full-time faculty member of the School of Management Technology(MT). He received his bachelor’s degree in Veterinary Medicine from Chulalongkorn University, M.B.Ain Finance from Loyola University (Chicago, USA), and M.S. and Ph.D. in Management InformationSystems from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (New York, USA).

SIIT Students Won Awards from the IT One InnovationAwards II Competition

Among the 20 finalists from renowned universities of Thailand were four senior projects from the School of Information,Computer, and Communication Technology (ICT). These 4 projects were presented at the IT One Innovation Awards IICompetition on February 18, 2012 at Silom Ballroom, Holiday Inn Bangkok, Silom, Bangkok. The four projects included:

“Intelligent Adaptive Bed for Comfortable Sleeping” by the F1LM1nT team (Ms. Pornprapa Chuwongwit and Mr. ChatchapolLertritkornchai), under the supervision of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Thanaruk Theeramunkong.

“Steganography for Real-Time Communication” by the Poypoymonmon team (Ms. Jirapa Jenchaimahakoon and Ms. RamonSintateeyakorn), under the supervision of Asst. Prof. Dr. Steven Gordon.

“Audiovisual-based Robot Navigation” by the Znia team (Mr. Krittameth Teachasrisaksakul and Ms. Niracha Iemcha-od), underthe supervision of Asst. Prof. Dr. Surapa Thiemjarus.

“Smart Room” by the ST4 team (Mr. ChayanonLertpagorngit and Mr. Phonpatchara Chochai), underthe supervision of Asst. Prof. Dr. Surapa Thiemjarus.

The projects entitled “Steganography for Real-TimeCommunication” and “Smart Room” won the secondrunner-up awards (of 10,000 baht each).

Best Presentation AwardMr. Kinaanath Hussain, a graduate student of the School of Civil Engineering and Technology,received the “Best Presentation Award” at the 7th Annual Concrete Conference (ACC7)which was organized by the Thailand Concrete Association during December 19-21, 2012,at Rayong Resort Hotel, Rayong. Mr. Hussain presented a paper entitled “Effect of BottomAsh on Curing Sensitivity of Concrete.” His research was conducted under Prof. Dr. SomnukTangtermsirikul’s supervision.

English Essay Competition: “ThinkTank YoungLeadership Awards 2011”

MBAThinkTank Inc., organized an English essay competition entitled “ThinkTank Young Leadership Awards 2011” duringSeptember-October 2011. The topic of essay was “My Leadership Contributions to SIIT and/or Thailand, Both Inside andOutside of Class” which focused on the leader’s role in academic and/or extracurricular achievements to contribute andenhance the community in Thailand and/or the public reputation of SIIT.

Ms. Isawan Kaeochotchuangkul, a third-year student from the School of Management Technology (MT) won the first prize.She received a 10,000-baht cash award, a trophy, and an MBA/Graduate Admissions Consulting Service Package (which isworth 100,000 baht).

In addition, consolation awards were also given to fourstudents, namely, Mr. Bandit Saechue and Mr. ChatchanokChusavat (fourth-year students from the School of Bio-ChemicalEngineering and Technology, BCET), Ms. Nichawan Jarutawai(a third-year student from the School of MT), and Mr. WisanuTuenudomseel (a fourth-year student from the School ofInformation, Computer, and Communication Technology, ICT).

SIIT Student Won the “Mobility in the Time of Flood” CompetitionThe “Water Green” team consisting of Ms. Panida Kaewniam (a third-year student from the school of Manufacturing Systemsand Mechanical Engineering (MSME), SIIT), Mr. Issarapong Prachitmutita, and Ms. Panatda Pongkasemwiwat (both fromDepartment of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE), Faculty of Engineering, King Mongkut’s University of TechnologyNorth Bangkok (KMUTNB)) won a 1st Prize under the Speed and Reaction Wave Award category in the Mobility in the Time ofFlood Competition. The project title was “Development of Watercraft from Nearby Handy Materials under Flood Situation.”

This competition was organized by the National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA) and the PTT PublicCompany Limited on November 16, 2011 at the Lumpini Park, Bangkok. There were more than 100 competing projects undertwo categories: (1) Speed and Reaction Wave Award, and (2) Creative Award. The objective of this competition was todesign and create an innovation for helping flood victims under the flood crisis situation. The qualified innovation must beable to support the load of more than 160 kg, be convenient and safe for use, use a spinning drive system, and be made fromsimple materials that were easy to find and low cost.

SIIT Graduates Received Panasonic Scholarships forFurther Study in Japan

Mr. Pipatthana Phatiwuttipat and Mr. Chernroj Savasdivorn, both from the Electronics and Communication Engineering(EC) Program of the School of Information, Computer, and Communication Technology (ICT), received the 2012 PanasonicScholarships for graduate studies in Japan. Mr. Pipatthana and Mr. Chernroj planned to study for master’s degrees atOsaka University and Tohoku University, respectively.

Graduate Student Project at Siam KubotaCorporation Co., Ltd.

In Semester 1/2011, graduate students from the School of Manufacturing Systems and Mechanical Engineering(MSME) conducted an industrial project at Siam Kubota Corporation Co., Ltd. in the Navanakorn IndustrialEstate. The project, which was required for agraduate course entitled SE 614 - Warehouse Designand Operations, focused on enhancing studentunderstanding in solving real industry-relatedproblems. Supervised by Dr. Morrakot Raweewan(an MT faculty member), the students conductedrelevant analyses and recommended a re-layoutof the existing warehouse to improve operationalefficiency and space utilization.

Siam Kubota Corporation Co., Ltd. is a joint venture between Kubota Corporation (Japan) and The Siam CementGroup (SCG). Its visions are to enhance business potential, become the leader of agricultural machinery in Asia,and strengthen its leadership in the development of sustainable agriculture. Siam Kubota has also sponsoredSIIT students in the summer internship program.

SIIT Scholarships for Students Who Were Flood VictimsProf. Dr. Chongrak Polprasert (SIIT Director) andAsst. Prof. Dr. Veeris Ammarapala (Asst. Directorfor Student Affairs and Alumni Relations) gavescholarships to SIIT students who were floodvictims during October-December 2011. Thescholarships were received by selected seniorstudents representing scholarship recipients (first-to fourth-year undergraduate students). A totalof 235,000 Baht from Sirindhorn Technology Scholarship Fund was given as scholarships to 94 SIIT students (2,500 Baht/student). On behalf of the Institute, the Director expressed SIIT’s deepest sympathy to the students and their families.Mr. Thanat Issaree, a second-year student of the School of Manufacturing Systems and Mechanical Engineering (MSME) andVice President of the SIIT Student Committee, presented an appreciation speech expressing their gratitude to the Institute forthis additional scholarship program.

SIIT Big Cleaning dayThe last year’s flood has caused serious damages to SIIT buildings and facilities. Prof. Dr. Chongrak Polprasert, SIITDirector, welcomed all volunteers to SIIT (Rangsit Campus) on December 2-3, 2011 to participate in the cleaningactivities. This was designated as “The SIIT Big Cleaning Day.” Faculty and staff members, students, and alumni helpedto remove damaged equipment and furniture, and clean up the ground areas. At the end of the second day, thebuildings were clear of garbage and there were only faded water marks on the walls.

Later in the afternoon, they cleaned the canteen and other areas on the first floorof the Sirindhralai Building.

SIIT Flood Recovery TripDuring February 4-5, 2012, the SIIT Volunteer Club organized a flood recovery trip to Watt Thuathong School, Sam KhokDistrict, Pathum Thani Province. Since Wat Thuathong School had been flooded for 3 months, the school equipment andmaterials (e.g., blackboards, desks, and tables) were severely damaged. A canteen, consisting of tents, tables, and plasticchairs, was set up for temporary usage because the old canteen was also damaged by the flood water. SIIT students andforeign (exchange) students helped to clean up classrooms, canteen,playground, and outdoor areas around school buildings. A new concretepathway connecting the buildingswas also constructed. Trees,crops, and grass were planted tocreate a green environment. Inaddition, recreation activitieswere held to cheer up schoolchildren. These flood recoveryactivities were sponsored by SIITand donations from SIIT studentsand faculty/staff members.

All volunteer work not only brought both campuses to their close-to-normal state, but also helped to uplift all of us.Since then, SIIT has focused on restoring the laboratories, library, and other areas, so that both teaching and researchactivities can be conducted at their capacity.

“The National Children’s Day 2012” at NSTDADuring January 12-13, 2012, “The National Children’s Day 2012 at NSTDA” was organized at the Sirindhorn ScienceHome by the National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA) with cooperation from ThammasatUniversity (TU) and several organizations. A number of students from schools in neighboring areas of NSTDA, PathumThani province, participated in this event.

On this occasion, SIIT and the Faculty of Science and Technology (TU) were the representatives for ThammasatUniversity. At the event, “Eng (English) and Science” was given as a name of the SIIT unit, which organized games andactivities for the children, such as English vocabulary games with pictures and a chemistry experiment. SIIT was oneof the most popular units in this event owing to the participation of several foreign (exchange) and SIIT students.Furthermore, young children enjoyed the “Throwing Ball” game and received game-rewards donated by the faculty/staff members of SIIT.

The Corporate Relations Division held the “SIIT Job Fair 2012” on March12, 2012 to introduce leading companies and job opportunities to interestedgraduating students. Orientation for New Exchange StudentsThe Corporate Relations Division held an orientation for new exchange students who enrolled at SIIT in the 2nd semester/2011 on January 4, 2012 at the Rangsit Center. The orientation was to provide information on the academic policies andregulations, campus life, and Thai culture. Eighteen exchange students from Germany, six exchange students from Finland,and one exchange student from Japan participated in the orientation program.

Cultural tripThe Corporate Relations Division arranged a cultural trip to theDamnoen Saduak floating market and Siam Cultural Park inRatchaburi Province, and to Mrigadayavan Palace in PhetchaburiProvince on March 11, 2012. The cultural trip was intended to notonly provide information on selected sightseeing and historical places,but also introduce Thai culture to foreign students. It was joined byboth Thai and foreign students.

Thai Study DayThe Corporate Relations Division held a “Thai Study Day” for

foreign students who enrolled at SIIT in the 2nd semester/2011on January 23, 2012. The program provided general Thai cultural

information and a sightseeing trip to historicalplaces in Ayutthaya Province.

Helsinki Metropolia University of Applied Sciences, FinlandSix students from Helsinki Metropolia University of Applied Sciences,Finland, have joined SIIT as exchange students.
