Club HeroesIt was Monday, June 3, 2013, and President Tom Jeffry brought Charlie Steinmetz to the podium to speak a Homeric paean to the value of charity….President Tom announced that the club made a charitable contribution in Kory Hunter’s name…..Kathleen Terry accompanied President Tom to Central High’s graduation, where they were joined by Nelson Gray…..President Tom is awarding medals to less-sung heroes of the club, this week honoring all the club’s active past presidents, especially including 92-year-old Wendell Harter.

Teachers of the YearVocational Chair Robin Gary enjoyed her last of many hurrahs at the podium, this time introducing local teachers with a few teacher jokes (thereby barely keeping pace with Mira Costa Principal Ben Dale). Mike Matthews, Rick Bagley and Carolyn Seaton joined President Tom to honor teachers of the year from the Manhattan Beach Preschool, Grandview, Pennekamp, Meadows, Pacific, Robinson, MBMS and MCHS. (Since I’m writing this, I get to brag: I had two Pennescampers and two Pacific Panthers and love both schools!). My favorite line came from honoree Mrs. Giambra, quoted as saying, “I have travelled all over the world, and Room 206 is the most fantastic place of all.”

The Loneliness of the Long Distance TeacherSchool Superintendent Mike Matthews offered a perspective on our awards with a few words on teaching. He described it as an isolating practice—“You’re alone in there.” As an administrator, “I’ve been able to see the amazing things they are doing inside that classroom.” Mike told us that the Rotary Teacher Awards are an important part of his ongoing effort to share what great teachers do.

Members In The NewsKathleen Terry was honored by the City for many years of service to Leadership Manhattan Beach….John Hugunin’s son, a graduate of our local schools, went on to Stanford and MIT…..Jason Wallace’s son has graduated from the Sloan Business School at MIT and is headed to Jordan to promote microloans after winning the Harvard Best New Ideas Competition…..Patrick Donahue and Tracy are

celebrating their 4th wedding anniversary…..Jan Rhees and Mike have closed on their Carmel vacation home (it’s on VRBO)….Deb Robertson and Tom are celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary…..John Van den Akker’s daughter Sarah is off to Munich with her new Masters in ESL…..Ingo Werk passed his ham radio exam (there’s an obvious pun there)…..Chef Meg Hall, Pacific Panther that she is, participated in Barsha’s wine dinner…..Jordan Peister’s brother is now a Newport Beach Rotarian.

DemotionAs the Summer Solstice approaches, we Manhattan Beach Rotarians think sun, sand, surf-- and demotion. Kent Caldwell is at it again, and Darrell Sperber is once again providing the practice facility. We can feel it in the air—President Tom is winding down, and President-Elect Kathleen is winding up. The least we can do is make President Tom’s exit a humiliating experience. Join the cast of bad actors if you can, and, whatever you do, don’t miss June 29.

Yours in Rotary,Jim Hallett

Attendance & Make-upsAttendance is an important part of our commitment to Rotary. Our secretary, Patti Panucci, regularly files attendance reports with Dis-trict 5280, and each club’s attendance record is reported district-wide. Let’s help Patti keep that attendance record high--report your make-up to her. (And, of course, do the make-ups in the first place!) What is a make-up? Board meetings, for one--you are always welcome even if you’re not a Board member, and it’s a fun evening to boot! Other clubs are also a make-up. So are many of our projects. So make Patti’s job easier--when you do a make-up, tell her. If you’re not sure it’s a make-up--hey, tell her anyway.

Rotary is Service Above Self

Rotary is Service Above Self

RI Programs Rotary International offers a broad range of humanitarian, intercul-tural, and educational programs and activities designed to improve the human condition and advance the organization’s ultimate goal of world understanding and peace. Nine structured programs and nine service opportunities help clubs and districts achieve their service goals in their own communities and in communities abroad, foster-ing fellowship and goodwill in the process.

Rotary Service Above Self World Community Service has been described as the “quiet revolu-tion of hope.” Isn’t it time for you to:

… Reach out to someone who needs help.… Develop a relationship with a club in another country.… Become acquainted with customs and culture of a faraway place.

Get InvolvedWelcome to our New Members! Become more than a member of your Rotary club, become a Rotarian. Get involved in your club, your community and your world through the opportunities offered by our Rotary club and Rotary International.

Long-time Rotarians agree that involvement is the key. Volunteer to serve on a committee that meets your interests, help out with weekly meetings, or as part of a service project team. These activities will help you get to know your fellow club members and understand what Rotary does.

District 5280 also offers opportunities for you to get involved. Attend your district’s conference to learn more about Rotary and celebrate the good works of your district. Host the visiting Group Study Exchange team or help organize the district’s Rotary Youth Leadership Awards program to see what clubs working together can do. These activities will help you meet Rotarians outside of your club, widening your circle of friends and expanding your service potential.

Rotary is Service Above Self
