CONTINUING EDUCATION INFORMATIONARRT Category A Continuing Education Credit will be available at the AHRA Annual Meeting and Exposition. Continuing Education credit for states with licensure for radiologic technologists will also be available. The number of credits per session will be listed in the on-site program.

AHRA will be using an electronic tracking system for CE credits at the 2009 Annual Meeting. The bar code on your badge will be scanned as you enter a session and as you leave the session. You must get BOTH scans in order to receive CE credit. Since the bar code on your badge tracks your attendance, you can only get CE credit if you have your badge with you at the session! Each night you will receive an e-mail listing the sessions you attended and the number of credits you received that day. This e-mail will also include links to online session evaluations—please make sure you complete the evaluations! We will also be providing a unique session ID number at the end of each session. This number will only be used for validation if you contact us after the meeting to say that you did not receive credit for a session you attended. A section for recording the session ID number will be included in the on-site program. After the conference you will receive a letter listing your complete attendance history and number of credits earned. More details about the new CE tracking system will be provided in the on-site meeting notebook.

IMPORTANT NEW CHANGE FOR 2009: You must be ON TIME for every session or you will NOT BE ELIGIBLE FOR CE CREDIT AND WILL NOT BE SCANNED INTO THE SESSION. There is no “buffer” time.

SESSION HANDOUTSIt’s easy being green—session handouts will no longer be printed and distributed in the sessions. In the past, this has led to a large amount of waste. Instead, AHRA will post the handouts on the web site 1-2 weeks before the start of the conference so attendees may print the handouts for the sessions they wish to attend in advance and bring them to the conference. Notes sections are also available in the onsite program notebook.

There’s more to see and do in Vegas than you can possibly imagine. But it’s fun trying. Shopping, dining, shows, spas, casinos—Explore the possibilities!

Building a Radiant Future (OR, Why Radiology Must Fly): The Proactive Path to the Next Level in American RadiologyJohn J. Nance

American healthcare is at a critical moment of change driven by financial, safety, quality, and professional challenges, and the very model of healthcare is in the last stages of metamorphosis from the cottage industry model of total physician autonomy and independence to the forced birth of what has to become a true “system.” In fact, we do not have a healthcare “system,” but the political and financial winds of change are forcing the issue, and the medical profession is looking for leadership in how to bring it about, as well as what this brave new “system” will look like.

Much as anesthesiology in the US forced itself through a Renaissance in concept, procedures, and overall safety performance in the eighties, it’s time for radiology (as an increasingly vital component of healthcare) to take a leadership role, not only in terms of embracing and stabilizing the use of new technologies, but as physicians, leading the way in redefining how radiologists are forged through the fires of medical school, and how practice standards can lead the way for the rest of medicine.

Whether we’re dealing with an office or a major hospital, the inevitability of human failure dictates that only a team of medical professionals led by physicians have the chance of reducing the potential impact medical mistakes to zero patient impact. The opportunity for the already-established methods of cooperative practice used in radiology to be the driving example for the rest of the physician community is clear; it simply takes a Renaissance in understanding and determination to lead.

Finally, the opportunity for radiology to establish an entirely new method of exciting and recruiting new members of the discipline—even before medical school—may in itself have the potential to massively change the old ways of forging doctors. Eliminating the traditional methods of browbeating and harassment through residency in favor of the vastly more profession means of teaching pioneered in aviation is more than a need, it is an absolute necessity if the medical profession in general is not to be doomed to perpetual retraining and perpetual clashes with the other vital teammembers: nurses, other physicians, and ultimately the patients.

You’re Hired, You’re Perfect, Now ChangeSteve Gilliland

The business world is a place of constant change, with stories of mergers, layoffs, bankruptcy, and restructuring appearing in the news every day. No matter the scale when these kinds of changes hit the workplace, the literal, situational shifts are often not as difficult for employees and managers to work through as the psychological transitions that accompany them. Indeed, organizational transitions affect people; it is always people who have to embrace a new situation and carry out the corresponding change. Without a clear understanding of what transition does to employees and what employees in transition can, in turn, do to an organization, the job of managing workplace change can be difficult; managed poorly,

the result can be disastrous to the morale and stability of the staff. Successful organizational change takes place when employees have a purpose, a mental picture, a plan for, and a part to play in change. This session provides practical strategies for reaching this goal and for minimizing the disruptions caused by workplace change. It is an invaluable for leaders navigating through change.

Get a Grip! Coping With Fear, The #1 Roadblock to SuccessFrank Miles

Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote, “Fear defeats more people than any one thing in the world.” Frank Miles couldn’t agree more. When a foolhardy hang-gliding accident briefly left him clinically dead, Frank realized that he had been more afraid of living than of dying.

Using the comedy, juggling, and magical skills that had made him the star of Las Vegas review shows like the Folies Bergere, Frank created a one-of-a-kind presentation about getting a grip on fear. This series of hilarious variety routines employs indelible visual and verbal metaphors that often involve the direct participation of the audience. Need a lesson in trust? How about having a blindfolded man chop celery out of your teeth with machetes? Trouble keeping your values in perspective? Maybe that Rolex looks less important when it’s flying over your head along with a fourteen-pound bowling ball. Topping the session off, Frank makes his final point about courage by performing a feat seen nowhere else in the world: bare-handed, he juggles 1.5 million volts of live electricity. Expect an hour of life-changing thoughts and images you will not soon forget.

NOTE: Separate fee required. Registration is limited to 100 participants—advance registration is strongly recommended. See pages 23-25 for registration information.

Think about the first work team you were on. You probably quickly discovered that each person had a unique way of doing things. Sometimes team differences are easily accepted and laughed about, and may even complement each other. But too frequently teams find that those differences can also cause confusion, stagnation, or frustration. Only when people have a framework to make sense of their differences can they learn what to expect from others and the best way to get what the team needs. This program uses the DiSC® framework to address three of the most common challenges that teams face: motivation, conflict, and communication. Participants learn simple, intuitive ways to make lasting improvements in a team’s effectiveness. This is a highly interactive workshop with small group activities, dyad discussions, and team sharing, calling for your active participation in the group process.

What’s new at the 2009 Annual Meeting? There are a few changes to the AHRA annual meeting in 2009 that we want you to know about:

l Practice Management track is now being offered! Are you a Business Manager in charge of everything from A to Z in your organization? Are areas such as accreditation, coding and reimbursement, human resources and facility management within your scope of responsibility? Then AHRA has a new conference track designed with you in mind. AHRA is rolling out the new Practice Management Track at the 2009 Annual Meeting. This track is designed to meet the professional needs of managers in charge of operations, workflow practices, facilities management, marketing, revenue development, accounts receivable management and much more. In this economic environment many administrators and managers have to choose one education venue to obtain all their training and continuing education credit. AHRA recognizes the need to get as much out of the Annual Meeting for your organization as possible. Look for the specially highlighted Practice Management Track sessions (shaded in orange in this brochure) and join other managers like yourself in learning more about the topics that are most critical to your day-to-day management responsibilities.

l CE Credit update: You must be ON TIME for every session or you will not be eligible for CE credit. There is no “buffer” time as in the past

l Session handouts: It’s easy being green—session handouts will no longer be printed and distributed in the sessions. In the past, this has led to a large amount of waste. Instead, AHRA will post the handouts on the web site 1-2 weeks before the start of the conference so attendees may print the handouts for the sessions they wish to attend in advance and bring them to the conference. CRA DOMAIN ICONSThe following icons are used to denote specific domains (subject areas) addressed by the Certified Radiology Administrator (CRA) credential examination and renewal.

Full session descriptions can be viewed at www.ahraonline.org.The AHRA Leadership Institute is pleased to once again present the Basic Management Skills Program, held in conjunction with AHRA’s 2009 Annual Meeting, and specifically targeted for imaging professionals taking on new positions, opportunities and challenges.

As imaging personnel move from clinical to supervisory to leadership positions, different skills are required and critical to achieve success. The AHRA Leadership Institute offers a portfolio of development programs designed exclusively for medical imaging professionals—including administrators, directors, managers, supervisors and technologists. Each program—Basic, Advanced or Executive—addresses challenges pertinent to their respective roles.

For new and aspiring supervisors and managers, this five-day comprehensive program will focus on basic management skills, including human resources, communications, operations management, asset management, finance and budgeting.

Note: To obtain the certificate of completion offered for this track, you must complete ten of the twelve Basic Management Skills sessions (Budgeting for Business Management Parts 1 and 2 count as a single session). You may also select two “elective” sessions from the main conference. You must have evidence of attendance in 12 sessions total to receive your certificate (keynote presentations do not count towards the total – breakout sessions only).

AHRA thanks the following companies for their generous support of the Leadership Institute’s Basic Management program:
