The new season brings with it a new era for thePCA with Angus Porter joining us as ChiefExecutive Officer. Angus has over 25 years ofbusiness experience having worked for Mars,BT, Abbey National and Thomas Cook, and hiswealth of commercial knowledge, leadershipand passion for cricket will help drive the PCAforward, as we continue to provide the bestpossible services, support and representationfor you, the players.

In recent weeks we've seen many of you at thepre season county visits and your interaction andfeedback has been valuable. Thanks also forassisting us by completing the first online annualsurvey.

To touch on a few reminders from these visits,the PCA has increased investment into therebranded Personal Development and WelfareProgramme (page 4) meaning that RachelNewnham, who has previously worked in Player

Services for the last 4 years, moves across tobecome a Personal Development and WelfareCoach. Balancing your life off field, together withyour hard work and dedication on the pitch isinvaluable in ensuring you perform to your verybest ability. The increased investment enablesthe PCA and ECB to continue providing you withthe support you need for now and into the future.

Support and Welfare - As a current professionalcricketer you're covered by the PCA for variousinsurance policies including permanent injury,temporary injury, critical illness and travelinsurance. All the details on these can be foundon the PCA website www.thepca.co.uk It's worthyou checking if you're happy with the levels forwhich you are covered or if you wish to ‘top up’these. Remember permanent injury insurancedoes not pay out for 'wear and tear'.

It's also been made clear at pre season meetingsthat it’s important to check if you are part of theECB Group Personal Pension, and if you are not,is it because a) you don't know about it, b) havenot been offered to join at your club or c) havepositively opted out? It's an excellent schemewith multiple benefits, not least the IncomeProtection element for if your career is endedthrough injury.

Anti Corruption - As of 2009 it became acriminal offence for a professional cricketer togamble on any cricket, anywhere in the worldand due to the betting industry agreeing an MOUwith the ECB, it will be easier to be caught if youdo bet on cricket. The sharing of information inthis industry is now enormously sophisticated.As with substance abuses and in line with the

games anti doping codes, lengthy bans can begiven to players who fail to adhere to these rules,so it's not worth the risk.

Don't gamble on cricket and don't take drugs!

A Season of Possibilities…

Where did you go and what did you do over thewinter? In this issue players around the country share their experiences of how theyspent their winters (p9 and 12) and we alsohighlight those counties who got involved inPersonal Development courses (p7). There arealso articles on Cricket NSW (p7), how to studyonline (p14), how to protect yourselves on the“Net” (p18) and for those aspiring modelsamongst you, routes into the modelling industry (p17).

As you will now be aware following all your PCA Pre-Season meetings - ‘PerformanceLifestyle’ (PL) has changed to ‘PersonalDevelopment and Welfare’ (PDW) in an excitingmove that will aim to enhance the supportoffered to players throughout the cricketpathway. For more info about the service andwhat you could get involved in turn to page 4.

This winter I was in the fortunate position to workwith the ECB U18 scholarship programme,where the players got the chance to test their lifeskills by having to research, plan, fundraise,organise and run a full kwik cricket tournamentto underprivileged children in India, whilst out ata Performance Training Camp in February. Formore details see page 5.

This made me think about all the possibleopportunities for you within the season, in andaround cricket, where you can develop yourpersonal skillset – public speaking, presentations,charity/community work (p8), working within theclub with sponsors/supporters… Getting outsideof your comfort zone, meeting new people,learning new things and starting to be acontributing member of society rather than a‘neutral’ or a ‘taker’. So many players of all agestalk about what they should be getting and theirrights but very few talk about their responsibilities… you might be surprised at the perspective andreward you will get from doing this.

Enough of the sermon, all you have to do is getout there and make it happen! And as always thePDW team are here to support you so please donot hesitate to get in touch…

A New Era for Sports

As of 1st October last year, UK Sport transferredall responsibility for its PL programme to theHome Country Sports Institutes, with the EISbecoming the lead agency for delivery of criticalsupport services to Olympic and Paralympicsport and taking on responsibility for the PLprogramme with the focus on 2012.

This has given Professional Sport a greatopportunity to look at the function of the supportoffered and make a deliberate move to align theservice and provision. We have looked atexamples of best practice around the worldincluding similar professions in CricketAustralia, other sports worldwide and thebusiness world. The newly named ECB/PCAPersonal Development and Welfare Programmetherefore aims, moving forward, to best enableplayers to excel and develop sustainableperformance within and outside cricket.

This is offered through authentic and independentsupport where players can off-load within a non-judgemental relationship that is detached fromperformance but understands its context.

As you are aware, it is crucial that elite playersare able to manage the competing demands intheir life both on and off the pitch, so that theycan perform at the highest level possible. Inorder to maintain a managed and sustainablelifestyle which supports performance, you haveto fit many aspects of your lives into and aroundyour commitment to your careers. Over the lastfew years, the ECB/PCA Personal Developmentand Welfare Programme has been able toprovide different personal development roleswithin the First Class County Cricket set-up,supporting Academy players, ProfessionalPlayers, former players and coaches with groupsupport and 1-2-1’s.

Players and Coaches are supported at FCCC on a1:1 and group workshop basis with regard to anyPersonal Development challenges that theyface. Typically this has meant providing playersor coaches with appropriate support so as togain perspective and clarity with concerns thatcould or would ultimately impact negatively ontheir environment or performance. It can oftenbe difficult for players to do this in their‘performance’ environment where selection andde-selection decisions are made. Confidentialand non-judgemental support where players cantalk and gain perspective in a trustingrelationship is an important component of oursupport.

The ECB/PCA Personal Development and WelfareProgramme offers a seamless continual supportthroughout the Elite player pathway in EnglishCricket that supports transitions, ensures reviewof learning and personal planning (induction/exitpoints) that is a nationwide commitment througha positive partnership between the ECB, PCA andFCCC to support all Players to develop andmaintain Personal Development Plans.

ECB/PCA Personal Development and Welfare Support Breakdown:

There are six areas that the programme offers support in:

1. SELF AWARENESS AND MANAGEMENT

Personal skills and values, sponsorship andpromotion, financial planning, budgeting andinvestment, time management and personalorganisation, nutritional cooking and preparation.

2. PROFESSIONAL PLAYER PREPARATION

Impression and image management, reality andbusiness of professional cricket, preparing fortouring and travel, culture of cricket: alcohol,lifestyle and drug awareness, rules andregulations of the game.

3. INTERPERSONAL SKILLS AND EXPERIENCES

Communication skills, media training, publicspeaking, effective networking, socialresponsibility, assertiveness and managing difficultsituations, negotiations, dealing with agents.

4. PERSONAL WELFARE SUPPORT

Understanding, knowing and using your supportstaff, guidance for parents and significantothers, relationships, managing change:professional and personal transitions includinginjury, moving county, families, well being etc

5. EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING

Lifestyles of other elite professionals, problem solving and decision making, value of perspective, interactive experiences,community projects, wider communityinvolvement.

6. DUAL ASPIRATIONS SUPPORT

Identification of personal training, educationand development needs, educational support:study skills, exam and assignment flexibility,online and home study, university and collegecourses, exploration of personal and careeroptions, creation of long, medium and short term Personal Development Plans.

OBJECTIVESResearch, organise, plan, manage andreview a project from start to finish. U18Scholarship squad used each trainingcamp to plan, communicated remotely and then ran a project while at theirPerformance Pressure Training Camp inBangalore in February 2010.

OUTCOMEPlayers were empowered to:Attend meetings – internal and external,take minutes, set-up email addresses,facebook groups and just giving website,raise funds (over £4000 for Sport Relief and Dream A Dream) – personal andcorporate, liaise with Charitableorganisations and the media, write reportsand press releases, hold a budget, do H & S Risk Assessment, organise a kwikcricket tournament with clothing and kit allsourced by the players. On the actual daythe players managed all the children, staff,and volunteers through a full programmeof introductions, activity, competition andprize giving.

Personal Development Courses

BBC 5live’s Pat Murphy ran a number of MediaTraining sessions, providing players with tips andadvice on how to deal with differing media,personality types and difficult media situations.Worcestershire’s Jack Shantry commented “I enjoyed the media session and felt all of usinvolved benefited from Pat Murphy’s in depthknowledge. It was good fun and provided us allwith useful tools to practice and implement infuture interviews.”

Leicestershire intergrated four differentworkshops into their player’s winter trainingschedule, which were a great success. Tim Boon,Leicestershire’s Head Coach commented “It isimportant that all young players receive the besteducation possible to equip them for life’sexperiences. That’s why I jumped at the chanceof free personal development courses offered bythe PCA. I feel young players need to beequipped with relevant information to cope withreal life situations and help them make informeddecisions so that they can focus on their cricketwithout added distractions, which these courseshelp to do.”

The Personal Development courses are part ofthe PCA and ECB’s Personal Development andWelfare Programme which aims to best enableplayers to excel and develop sustainableperformance within and outside cricket. This winter 20 courses at 10 different countieshave been run, with over 140 players benefitingfrom them.

If your county didn’t run courses this winter butyou’re interested in learning and developing newskills, let your Personal Development Coach knowwhat courses you’d like to take part in next winter.

Over the winter season, 10 countieshave taken the opportunityprovided by the PCA to runPersonal Development Courses for their players. These workshopsaim to help players develop theirwider skill set, which willultimately support theirdevelopment as professionalcricketers. This year the courseshave been bespoke and run at eachindividual county to minimisetravelling time and ensure theycan be scheduled in between player training sessions.Workshops that have been runinclude Media Training, Leadership,Social Responsibility, PublicSpeaking and Negotiation skills.

Cheryl Williams, PlayerCareer and WelfareManager at Cricket NSW,introduces us to the serviceshe provides in Australia…

“We have a philosophy at CNSW of ‘Earn orLearn’ which in essence means that in theirdown time, players will undertake some formof formal study or maintain some form ofemployment outside of cricket. This can bedifficult to sustain as the playing calendar isgetting fuller and longer each season.

The cricketers at CNSW have embraced thisphilosophy and we have a very high strike rateof players working and/or studying. For thosewho don’t have aspirations for tertiary study, or those not working, they keep busy in theirfree time by assisting with charity work andattending player appearances in schools,Grade Club presentations and CorporateEvents.

As the name suggests ourRTA SpeedBlitz Blues aresponsored by the RTA(Roads & Traffic Authority)and the players attend manyappearances on behalf ofthe RTA in order the spreadthe message of safe driving.Recently the players all tookthe ‘Slow Down Pledge’,which is an initiativedesigned to get youngpeople to take ownershipover the issue of speeding.

As we are now officially in the ‘Off Season’, I will be working closely with the players ontheir Personal Development. As well as theirformal studies, we will be doing informalactivities including a Masterchef day, wherethe players will divide into two groups and‘cook off’ against one another, personalpresentation and etiquette and team buildingexercises like white water rafting etc.

Just recently, two of our SpeedBlitz Bluesplayers, Stephen O’Keefe and Dan Burns(pictured) attended a private net session forwinners of a competition, held through our BlueHeelers Club. The Blue Heelers Club is the JuniorSupporter Club of the RTA SpeedBlitz Blues.

My job at CNSW is great, as I get to work withthe players, both male and female, from thetime they join our Development Programs,right through to the completion of theirprofessional cricketing careers and beyond.”

Going the extra mile...

On March 21st, facing varyingweather conditions around thecountry, millions of people donnedtheir trainers to take part in theSport Relief Mile. Amongst thesewere a number of professional andacademy players and coaches fromthe 18 First Class Counties. Manyof the County Academy players hadbeen organising and fundraisingfor their local mile events as part of a community project to givesomething back to thecommunities that support them.

Launched in 2002 Sport Relief is a biennialcharity event from Comic Relief, in associationwith BBC Sport, which brings together theworlds of sport and entertainment to raisemoney to help vulnerable people in both the UKand in the world’s poorest countries. In 2004 theSport Relief Mile was created to give thecampaign a focus with an event that was open toanyone to run, walk, jog, wheel, bounce or crawl,regardless of ability or age.

Across the country the varying distances of 1 mile, 3 miles and 6 miles were all tackled bythe players, some even running in full cricketkit!! Coaches, support staff and club mascotsalso joined in the fun.

Huge congratulations go to Derbyshire, Essex,Glamorgan, Hampshire, Leicestershire,Northampton, Sussex and Warwickshire who alltook part in the challenge, as well as the ECB U18Scholarship programme who also took part inadvance, whilst on a Performance training campin Bangalore, India in February. The fantasticeffort put in by all the players means thatbetween them they have raised over £7500 forSport Relief!

This amazing achievement is acknowledged byCarolynne Evan, Comic Relief's FundraisingDevelopment Manager, who said "Sport Reliefwould like to thank the First Class County

Cricket academies forsupporting Sport Relief 2010.We are hugely grateful to havethe support of the cricketcommunity especially giventhat the activity was driven bythe cricketers of the future.We hope everyone enjoyed theweekend and feels justlyproud of the fundraising andlearning that went into making

it such a success. For our part, we promise tospend every penny raised helping the some ofthe poorest and most disadvantaged people herein UK and overseas".

Even the sub zero temperatures and polar weatherconditions weren’t enough to attract some players to sunnierclimbs this winter. Two players that took full advantage of thePCA’s Placement & Learning Access Network (PLAN) wereCHARL WILLOUGHBY and MIKE RICHARDSON.

The PLAN programme is available to all playersand provides valuable opportunities to gaincommercial experience across a variety ofdifferent sectors. From one day tasters to threemonth internships, PLAN gives players a uniqueinsight into life on the other side of the fenceand helps to promote the fact that there is lifeafter cricket.

Both players grabbed opportunities with twoleading UK and international law firms.

Mike spent a week with a firm whoseinfluence stretches into Germany,Denmark and the United States.

“I enjoyed the week’s work placement and the firm concerned was very accommodating of me. Durhamhave since offered me a contract so my real career has again been put on hold. But the pressure has beentaken off me and my cricket to some extent, while the future of my cricket career was uncertain.”

Although PLAN can’t always guarantee to secure you work in a specific area of interest, it can offer abreadth of commercial experience that will increase your confidence, provide access to invaluablebusiness contacts and help you to see that there is indeed a life after cricket.

For Charl, the benefits of the PLANprogramme were not unknown to himhaving utilised service the year before.This year, he spent some time withClarke Willmott; a leading UK law firmwith offices in Bristol, Taunton,Southampton, Birmingham and London.

“My time spent at Clarke Willmott was veryinteresting for a number of reasons.

Firstly, it was the first time I had spent any time inan office environment and it was quite an eyeopener. Everybody was very friendly and made aneffort to make me feel welcome, as well askeeping me busy; even though they wereextremely busy themselves. I soon realised evenin the corporate world there is a lot of laughterand team effort; something which I could relate toand made me feel at ease.

Secondly, much like sport, everyone has their ownjob to do but quite often need the assistance ofothers in the team. It’s not everyone on their ownbut you could always rely on someone senior tohelp out or offer advice.

Also, as in sport, the new guy always feels out ofhis depth but everyone that has been around for awhile knows this and understands and thereforeare willing to make you feel more at home andcomfortable.

As part of my placement, I travelled to 3 of theiroffices and spent time with different managers. Ialso had quite an in depth meeting with a seniorpartner chatting about how sportsmen areintegral to business and that there are others likeme trying to make the conversion. This wasvaluable to me to understand that there would belife after cricket. I was also invited to sit in on ameeting between two heads of completelydifferent departments and get a feel of how theyoperate and keep an open level of communicationgoing.

Although I did not have to do much work that wastaxing, I did help with research on potential newclients and helped compose a few articles fortheir website. I also got to spend some timeworking with various computer programmeswhich really gave me some confidence.

All in all, it was a valuable experience and I amvery grateful to Clarke Willmott and for the PLANprogramme for providing me with thisopportunity.”

LG: What does being a Performance Analystinvolve?

MB: Being a performance analyst generallyinvolves mining the complex reality of what hasoccurred in a cricket match and using analysisprocesses to identify the main components ofthe performance. We use a range of modelsand key performance indicators to decide whichaspects of a performance to monitor. Thebenefit of this process is that we are able toidentify trends in performance over both shortand long time periods. The areas we monitorcannot be assessed using vision and the humanmemory alone over the same time periods. 

LG: What does a general day in your job look like?

MB: One of the best things about the job isthere is no such thing as a general day! A dayin the office is very different to a day on tour. Inmy case I must also spend time looking at thegeneral strategy of the department and ensurewe are positioned to deliver the best cricketperformance analysis in the world.

GB: It’s pretty varied to be honest, which is oneof the things l love about the job. When I’m noton tour I’m based at the National CricketPerformance Centre in Loughborough wheremy duties include putting together theopposition analysis ready for the next series(Hawkeye analysis, gathering footage ofopposition players), researching trends in thegame, and providing support for any campsthat are going on at NCPC. On tour I obviouslyhave the live match coding on match days,reviewing performances of both the oppositionand ourselves to help us continuously improvegame on game, providing statistics on thegrounds that we will play at and answering, asbest I can, any questions the coaches mayhave.

LG: What was your career path until now like?

MB: I attended Manchester MetropolitanUniversity to do a BSc in Sport and Coaching

Science. After this course I worked for GreatBritain Shooting as a Research Bio mechanist,delivering practical support while undertakingperformance research. In 2004 after attendingmy first Olympics, I joined the English Instituteof Sport where I spent nearly 5 years workingwith a range of Olympic sports. In this time Ialso began a PhD in Skill Acquisition to betterunderstand how our information could impactupon athlete learning. In August 2009 I waslucky enough to join the ECB and that is whereyou find me now! My career path very muchsuits my inquisitive and detailed personality.There is no set development path inperformance analysis but you do need a feelfor data and numbers and must be able tointeract in the performance environment verywell.

GB: After studying for a BSc in Sport Science, Istudied for a Masters in Performance Analysisat UWIC in Cardiff. Whilst there I contacted theECB and asked to do some work experience.Six months of work experience later and I wasoffered a short term contract to help preparethe opposition analysis for the 2007 World Cup.That ultimately led to a full time position andI’ve worked my way up from there.

LG: What kind of people are best suited to thisposition?

MB: Anyone who loves to answer performancequestions and is comfortable with data,numbers and electronics. Also, someone whois able to work under their own steam for longperiods of time and finally someone who isable to effectively communicate complexinformation in a simplified manner.

GB: Hard working and being good withnumbers are the main ones – it is not a job thatcould be done in the normal 9-5 workinghours. Searching through rows and rows ofdata just to find one piece of information thatcould help requires dedication and a love ofnumbers!

LG: What do you most enjoy?

MB: Working in high performanceenvironments and finding processes whichreliably have a performance impact.

GB: Being on tour – the whole experience ofbeing part of a team that is travelling togetherwith the common goal of winning a series isawesome!

LG: What do you least enjoy?

MB: Losing when we have prepared to win.

GB: I can honestly say I love everything aboutmy job. There are times when you are sat up inthe early hours of the morning trying to fix acomputer problem or standing precariously atthe top of a ladder trying to get a good cameraposition for coding that you might think “whatam I doing?!” but that is all part of what makesthe job so rewarding.

LG: What do you find the most challenging?

MB: Balancing the delivery of day to dayrequirements with the achievement of ourlonger term goals of England teams.

GB: Dealing with computers when they decideto crash for no reason at all.

LG: Why is Performance Analysis important incricket?

MB: Cricket contains many layers ofinformation which build up over long periods oftime. The human being is only able to store andrecall around 40% of all the information theyare exposed too. Performance analysisprovides a way to capture and understand ahigher percentage of the information on offer.And we are always looking for new ways toextract more useful knowledge from theinformation available.

GB: The difference between winning and losingis often so marginal; performance analysis canobjectify performance to help find those littleone percenters that can make up thatdifference.

LG: What was the best experience you’ve had in thejob (ECB or otherwise)?

MB: My whole career has been a very fulfillingexperience. Right now I am looking forward toundertaking my first match coding tour with theEngland Lions in the UAE in Feb.

GB: The whole of 2009! It started with my firsttrip abroad on the job to the Women’s WorldCup in Australia and winning it; then I workedwith both the Men and Women at the World T20in England where England Women werevictorious again; I was promoted to EnglandTeam Performance Analyst, then we won theAshes and became only the second team to wina One Day Series in South Africa….not a badyear!!! If we hadn’t lost 6-1 to the Aussies in theOne Day Series at home it would have beenpretty perfect!!

LG: What advice would you give to players who arethinking about PA as a career?

MB: Get some experience in the industry andlearn about the basic underpinning science offeedback and analysis methods. Professionalcricketers will bring a great wealth of gameknowledge into the industry and this knowledgecan be best harnessed to help the coach whenobjective analysis of the game is mixed withsubjective or contextual understanding.

GB: Get some hands on experience and try itout – that’s the only way you will know if it’s foryou. It can look deceptively glamorous from theoutside looking in, with assumptions that youget to watch cricket all day and get paid for it.Whilst that is true to some extent, there is ahuge amount of work that goes on around that.

I started to prepare formy 20,000 word dissertation with a5000 word proposal on playersplanning future careers after cricket.It’s an issue that is very relevant inour profession and something I feelwe should all embrace at some stagein our careers.

With the way the cricket calendar has beenplanned out over the last few winters, I have hadthe chance to work alongside my brother inorganising pilgrimage tours to Saudi Arabia. Alongwith being a break from the cricket environment, ithas been a great opportunity to learn and developnew skills which could be required in life aftercricket. Being a small family run business, atypical day could see me doing anything fromarranging hotel contracts and dealing with clients,to making the tea!! Having had the experience inthis field I have realised how hard working in the‘real world’ can be but would definitely considerdoing it full time in my career after cricket.

This winter I decided, for the third year in a row, to goback to Adelaide and work with the likes of ShaunSeigert and Darren Lehmann. Grade cricket on aweekend was important as I could put into practice whatI was working on during the week. Unfortunately thiswas cut short due to an injury to my shoulder, whichresulted in me flying back early. This was somewhatfrustrating, as I found the cricket challenging, but at thesame time, very rewarding.

Having being injured, it made me think about things todo outside of cricket. I took it upon myself to completea Level 2 Gym Instructing course, which has now beencompleted and which I hope after the season will thentake me into personal training.

Being injured and having time away from the gamehas made me realise that personal training issomething that I enjoy and want to pursue. I am alsolooking into buying property, which is important forme, due to the long travelling commitments I have atthe moment. Normally, my time off would consist ofgolf or fishing, but due to my injury, fishing took overmassively this winter! This winter has made merealise that there’s more to life than cricket and thattime away from the game is important in order to befresh for the season ahead

For as long as I’ve played cricket, the question ofwhat I’d do when I finished has provided moreangst and uncertainty than any delivery I’ve everfaced. Last year, I finally decided that I wanted togo into the law. I enrolled on a distance learningcourse at Nottingham Trent which allows me toplay cricket and study over two years. I theninterviewed at a London firm and was offered ajob. It means that (finally) I have a post-cricketplan, and I can breathe a sigh of relief!

After the curtains had beendrawn on our cricket season, it was time to swap my crickethelmet, pads and gloves for myhard hat, steel toe caps and highvisibility jacket. I decided it wastime to put my civil engineeringdegree to good use and was luckyenough to get such an amazingopportunity to do so in theseeconomically demanding times.

This winter I’ve spent time incentral London working for acompany called “Tube lines” giving them a helping hand in upgradingthe London Underground. I was working in Tottenham Court Roadstation mainly on the night shift, which started at 12 midnight andfinished around 6 in the morning. This involved working withcontractors upgrading platforms, on projects installing temporarylighting and relocating existing communication systems, fire cables etcalong a temporary CMS (cable management system), ready for the totalfacelift/ transformation of the station. I was basically the ears and eyesfor Tube lines through the night shift, making sure that everything thatthe contractor was carrying out was being done properly conforming tocertain rules and regulations and making sure everything that wasscheduled was on time and running smoothly. 

Via my own network, I managed to secure this work placement, whichhas been very rewarding and I’ve been able to balance my fitnessrequirements around the demanding schedule as my apartment had itsown gym.

Since joining the team at Tube lines I have gained extremely valuableexperience in the engineering industry and these last few months have

opened my eyes to the working world, I have thoroughly enjoyed mytime working in London and would like to say a massive thank youto Tube lines for giving me such an opportunity and especially to

Nick Kinman for keeping his eyes open for me.

The winter months can be monotonousfor a county cricketer if you’re not playingclub cricket abroad in sunnier climates.So this winter I’m glad to have started theLevel 4 ECB Coaching Course. Granted,it’s hard work but it breaks up the off-season and keeps my mind fresh for whenI get back to Bristol for training sessions.Up till now the course has focused oncoaching skills and dealing with differenttypes of personalities and psychology incricket.

Over the past few winters I’ve kept myselfbusy by qualifying to be a journalist,thanks to the PCA’s PersonalDevelopment taster course, and lastwinter I took evening classes learningSpanish, badly. Unfortunately I’ve not doneany journalism for a while due to training,but it’s something that I’d like to keepdoing.

The winter is a good time to explore newoptions for a future career once the crickethas finished and one that I’d fully support.

This winter I’ve been studying in my 3rd year of physiotherapy up at Salford University.Alongside this I’ve beencompleting my firsthospital placement overat Milton Keynesgeneral hospital.  This involved workingin the Intensive CareUnit (ITU) with critically ill patients, andalso on surgical and respiratory wards dealingwith patients with breathing problems followingsurgery, or with chronic diseases such asCOPD. To say this experience was an eye openeris somewhat of an understatement, but theperspective I have gained of the NHS and onlife in general will stay with me forever.  Beingable to do this course whilst still playingcricket is such an advantage, not only doescricket help with the funding of the coursewithout having to worry about employment, butthey both feed into each other in terms ofknowledge of injuries, and also, giving me areality check that a bad day with the ball could bea lot worse!! Only 18 months and 4 moreplacements like this to go until graduation! Whenthat happens I owe all the people at the PCA abeer for helping to support me!!

After numerous emails andconversations with contacts I had built up last winter, I was invitedfor an interview with a company called TNS Sport ,which resultedin an internship for two days a week, from October to December.

Initially I was asked tocomplete fairly basictasks, however thecompany were veryproactive in helping me tolearn about the businessand before long I wasintegrated into morecomplex tasks. It was a highly fascinatingopportunity which gaveme a very good insightinto a real working dayand life in a London office,working on sponsorshipevaluation. It put someperspective on my currentlifestyle and made merealise how lucky I am.

I decided to study a foundationdegree in Sport and Fitness at the OpenUniversity. The main reason for choosing to dothis degree was its flexibility. Those unsure ofwhat they want to study have the flexibility of theOpen Degree, picking and choosing modules tosuit your needs and interests.

Starting education again was a bit daunting, but the Open University offers a wide range ofintroductory courses to help you find your feet.They also make use of a wide range of materials,like the Internet and DVD’s to mix up thelearning process and keep things fresh. The bestpart, by far, is having online tutorials. Thismeans travelling is not necessary andparticipation can be from the comfort of yourown home. This reduces costs, which is not theonly saving. Courses are charged per module, at

reasonable prices, with a one off payment. The Education Funding support programmefrom the PCA can halve this again.

Your tutor is always willing to help if a problemarises. Accessible via email and phone, making iteasy and quick to get in touch. ModellingModelling can provide flexible and lucrative employment, aswell as the chance to meet new people and visit new places.Three players recount their experiences…

Adam ShantryA couple of years ago, one of the few girls who havehad the misfortune to have called me her boyfriend(she has now seen the error of her ways )suggested that I should try my hand at modelling.After checking my calender to make sure it was notthe first of April, I sent a couple of photos to anagency, who said that they felt they would be ableto find some work for me. After having a set ofmore professional prints taken (two grainy effortstaken on a mobile phone didn't quite cut themustard), I was ready for the offers from Paris andNew York to roll in. Sadly, I am still waiting forthem! I have, however, had a few castings, and anumber of jobs as a result.

My personal highlight was a shoot for a series ofMills and Boon style book covers, involving meholding a not completely unattractive girl in myarms and gazing longingly into her eyes. Slightlymore pleasurable than toiling away on a flat one inthe middle of August! Conversely, nearly having myteeth forcibly removed by a number of nice youngmen at a 21st birthday party at a nightclub in Hullcould be considered a low point. To put the event incontext, I was performing my role as a toplesswaiter with distinction, when after receiving onewedgie too many, I confronted my assailants, onlyto reconsider my choice of retribution whennoticing that were nine of them and only one of me.My fellow waiter had also been taking a fair amountof punishment, although he had been subjected tothe more discerning mans method of inflictingpain, the dreaded "nipple cripple".

I am not going to make my millions frommodelling, but it has given me some goodmemories, and has brightened up a few winterdays that would otherwise have been rather dull!Don't expect to see the hair and make up girlsstanding at fine leg though...

Laurie EvansWhilst recovering from injury a few winters ago, itwas mentioned to me that I should try modellingand send some photos in to an agency, which I did.I’ve always liked fashion, culture and the arts so itwas definitely of interest to me. They asked me tocome to their studio and have some more photostaken. I was a bit apprehensive about going but hadnothing else to do so went along. When I turned upto the studio, I was greeted by a Frenchphotographer who didn’t seem at all that interestedand clearly didn’t want to be there. Because of hisattitude, I didn’t enjoy it and so didn’t follow any of itup. It was good to experience having your phototaken, as professional sportsman are seen moreand more in the public eye at the highest level... butI think I will concentrate on becoming a greatsportsman first before I get in front of a cameralens again!!

Steffan PioletDuring my gap year, I wanted to experience playingcricket in Australia for a season. To help finance thetrip I worked a little bit for my dad in hiswarehouse… and I also did some modelling.

The modeling opportunity came about one daywhen I was looking on Gumtree for some part timework. An ad caught my eye; it was recruiting malemodels for a book on athlete’s bodies. I answeredthe ad by sending in a photo and I got an interview,which lead to me doing four photo shoots.

Each shoot took two hours and I earned £150 perhour. It turned out to be the perfect way to fund mytrip to Oz, was actually pretty good fun and thephotos were alright believe it or not! I’m not surewhether I would do any more modelling work in thefuture, but it was a good experience and helped toget me out to Australia to play cricket that winter!

As a model, you would promote clothing andaccessories to fashion buyers, customers and themedia. You might model items in fashion shows, or inphotographs for catalogues, magazines, newspapersand advertising campaigns. You could specialise invarious types of modelling, such as:

■ photographic, advertising and TV commercials

■ fashion and catwalk

■ in-house live modelling for designers and clothingwholesalers

■ promotional modelling (demonstrating non-fashion items at product launches and trade fairs).

■ fitness

In fashion show modelling you would move along acatwalk, walking and turning to display clothes in frontof an audience.

In photographic, advertising and commercial modellingyou would pose for photographers in a studio or onlocation, follow directions from photographers, or actor deliver lines in TV commercials.

If you worked as an in-house live model, designerswould fit garments onto you in the workshop, and youwould show finished clothing to fashion buyers andprivate customers.

As a photographic or catwalk model, you would workclosely with stylists, hair and make-up artists,producers and directors. You would also spend much ofyour time going to castings for jobs, keeping in contactwith your agency, and looking after your appearance.

The male fitness modelling industry is different frommen's fashion modelling, with different photographersand industry players. Talent agents and modellingagencies are unnecessary in this arena. If a guy ismuscular, it is easier to break into the fitnessmodelling business than to become a male fashionmodel. Fitness modelling is geared towardsupplements and fitness magazines. Male fitnessmodels earn less than their fashion counterparts, butopportunities are abound in the fitness industry.

What qualifications and experience will employers look for?To work as a model you need a good appearance and the right ‘look’. You do not need anyformal qualifications. You should be tall and well-proportioned with even features and healthyskin, teeth and hair. The Association of Model Agents (AMA) recommends that males shouldhave the following measurements:

■ 38-40 inch (97-102cm) chest, 30-32 inch (76-81cm) waist, and height of at least six feet(1.83m). However, an agency may accept you for photographic or promotional work if youare not the standard fashion model size, as long as you have the right look for potentialclients.

You would usually start your career by sending photographs and details of yourmeasurements to a modelling agency. Make sure that you join a reputable agency – contactAMA or Alba Model Information for details.

What further training and development can I do?Once you have been accepted by a modelling agency, you willusually be given some training in:

■ basic walks, turns and poses

■ photographic modelling techniques

■ diet and health

■ skin care and grooming

■ how to work with agents.

What salary can I expect? Earnings can vary. Most models work on a freelance basis through an agent and are paid foreach job. Rates can vary from around £50 to £1,000 a booking, and agents usually take 20% ofthe earnings.

What are the hours and working conditions?As a live model you could work in fashion show venues, showrooms and stores. On photoshoots you could work in photographic studios or various other locations depending on theneeds of the shoot. Working hours could be long and irregular, depending on the type andamount of work. The job can involve a lot of travel (sometimes overseas) to attend castings,fashion shows and photo shoots.

What skills will I need?

■ good grooming and willingness to look after yourself

■ fashion sense and awareness of trends

■ the ability to move well

■ confidence, self-reliance and discipline

■ a pleasant, professional attitude with good ‘people skills’

■ good time-keeping

■ patience, stamina and fitness to cope with long, tiring days and travelling

■ the ability to cope with criticism and rejection.

What opportunities are there?You would usually be self-employed and get work through a modelling agency. Most largeagencies are based in London. There are also some opportunities for permanent in-housemodels with wholesale or retail fashion businesses. Competition is strong, and being acceptedon an agency’s books is no guarantee of regular modelling work. You will improve yourchances of a successful career by building a good portfolio and gaining experience andcontacts. With experience, you could become a booker for a model agency, set up your ownagency, or move into other areas of the fashion industry, such as styling or fashion journalism.Some models branch out into the entertainment industry, for example TV presenting or acting.

The danger for anyone in the public-eye ismagnified; having personal and contact informationdisplayed, not only jeopardises safety againstscams, but provides eager press, doting fans orunwanted followers the opportunity to intrude andplay havoc; the warning is that stalking andharassment just got easier. Leeds Rhino and GBstar Keith Senior made headlines for his romanticinvolvement with Australian hottie CharmaunePalavi. Senior ‘met’ Palavi on Facebook and thepair ‘hit it off’ on his arrival in Australia for the 2008World Cup.
