ADJUSTMENTS TO THE EDUCATION SYSTEM
• PSLE and Secondary 1 posting, move away from
T-score, to scoring students in broader bands.
• Secondary school Subject-based Banding.
• Broadening DSA and ensuring a more variegated
school landscape, including distinctive areas
(niches).
PSLE- A PLACEMENT EXAM
● Reflects the relative achievement level of students
within their peers.
● Places students into different streams
(Express/NA/NT) according to their academic
ability.
● Enables posting to secondary schools by merit
and as far as possible into a school of their choice.
PSLE T-SCORE
• It gives the relative position of a student’s
performance as compared to the performance of all
the other students in that subject.
• The raw mark obtained in the exam only shows how
good the student is in that subject, not how good he
is as compared to others.

Implications when dropping HMTL at P5
• Assignment to any CL class with vacancy, which may
not match the child’s ability level
• Need to purchase a new set of learning materials /
textbooks
• Need to adjust to a new teacher and new classmates

Criteria for taking HMTL at P6
1. Overall score of 70 marks or better for MTL
&
2. Overall score of 60 marks or better for HMT

Students may opt to offer HMTL
(Higher Chinese/ Higher Malay/ Higher Tamil) from Sec 1
onwards if they offer MTL or HMTL at the PSLE and are in the:
• Top 10% of the PSLE cohort; or
• Top 11% - 30% of the PSLE cohort and meet the language
criteria i.e. an A* grade in the MTL or at least a Merit in
HMTL.
