The Halton District School Board hasdecided to sell 10 acres of its property at WhiteOaks Secondary School (WOSS).
There are two separate pieces of land, bothof which are currently green space, for sale onthe site adjacent to the north campus building.
“There are actually two areas we looked at,”said Gerry Cullen, superintendent of facilityservices with the school board. “One is on theeast side of the existing White Oaks northschool building and parking lot, so it is adja-cent to a tree line and group of townhouses in
that area. There’s another section of land thatis immediately north of the facility that is iden-tified as surplus to the needs of the currentcampus use.”
The east portion of land is about threeacres in size, while the parcel north of thebuilding is roughly seven acres in size. Sportsfields occupy the majority of the larger pieceof land.
“The two schools have been twinnedadministratively, so you do have one adminis-trative team with two locations for classes andprograms,” Cullen said. “For the most part, there’s now one football team, one soccerteam, so having the sports fields that are affil-
iated with the south campus of the currentWhite Oaks High School would meet most ofthose needs. Some of (the land) is sports fields, but they have been identified more for com-munity use aspect than school need at thistime.”
The first step in the sale of the property isassessing how much the land is worth. Oncethat has been decided, provincial regulationsgoverning the disposition of school propertydetermine who will have the first opportunityto purchase the land. Among the list of pre-ferred buyers is the Town of Oakville.
Once the official sale starts, buyers fromthat list will have 90 days to make an offer.
There is also the opportunity to ask the boardfor an extension.
Cullen said talks would likely have to bemade regarding boundary lines for the seven-acre parcel of land at White Oaks dependingon who is interested in purchasing it and whatit would be used for.
Proceeds from the sale of the surplus prop-erties go back into the school board’s coffersto pay for new school construction.
Other Oakville sites up for sale by theschool board are a parkway belt woodlot andLorne Skuce Public School.
