Until recently, the capital region was well-known as Germany’s creative hub, but now it’s also become the nation’s digital start-up capital. More new companies are founded here—in particular in the field of social and interactive media—than anywhere else in Germany. Entrepreneurs continue to be spurred on by the region’s creative climate and comparably affordable office space, and more and more national and international investors are interested in young Berlin-based firms. A number of leading international digital events also enrich the capital’s digital landscape, such as the Berlin Web Week including the digital conferences re:publica and NEXT (www.berlinwebweek.de), the DGT – Germa- ny’s leading Game Development Event (www.deutsche- gamestage.de), the animago AWARDs for digital excel- lence (www.animago.com) and the medienwoche@IFA with its International Media Convention (www.medien- woche.de). Berlin has emerged as a major European hub for the global digital scene. And it’s not surprising, considering that anyone who wants to turn ideas into reality will find ideal conditions to make it happen here, including a crea-tive environment, affordable office space and generous financing and funding opportunities.one of these is the Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg initi-ated “Innovative Audiovisual Content” funding program which has been encouraging digital expansion in the region since 2006. The program uses €1 million annually to support the development of innovative content for digital media, including games, apps, social media, transmedia projects and interactive documentaries.
