Page 1 The second half of the 2014-15 academic year (January 1-June 30) saw a number of exciting developments in the Department of Surgery. The residency program expansion continued with the recruitment of eight new individuals joining in the first and second years of the residency program. A more detailed report is included within this E-News. We also had continued progress in several other key programs within the Department including the Rural Surgery Support Program, the Simulation program, the Surgical Anatomy program, and the spectrum of rotation opportunities for our residents. Our medical students continue to do well in the national match with several matching into very competitive surgical specialties. A full report on the match and UND students is also enclosed. We all anxiously anticipate the opening of the new medical school which is just one short year away. The academic year culminated in a very successful and invigorating Resident Research Colloquium and Chief Resident Banquet. We were fortunate to have Dr. Ajit Sachdeva as our Edwin C. James Lecturer, who is a nationally recognized surgical educator and founding Director of the Division of Education of the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Sachdeva was very impressed and complimentary of activities within our program. We hope to continue and increase our collaboration with the American College of Surgeons in the future. In summary, the 2014-15 academic year was very successful and encouraging for the continued growth and progression of the Department of Surgery. Medical Student NewsMedical School GraduationThe medical school awards luncheon and graduation wereheld on Sunday May 9, 2015 at the Chester Fritz Auditoriumon the UND Campus in Grand Forks. 54 new physiciansreceived their MD degrees, with 12 (22%) of them enteringGeneral Surgery or surgical subspecialties. Although thesurgical specialties are highly competitive residencies, UNDstudents continue to do well in matching in their desiredspecialties at very competitive programs. The studentsgraduating in 2015 entered several competitive surgicalspecialties including one in General Surgery, four inAnesthesiology, one in Ophthalmology, two in Orthopaedic,one in Otolaryngology, and one in Plastic Surgery. Thefaculty of the Department of Surgery is commended for theircontinued support and inspiration of the medical students whodesire careers in surgical specialties.

The “match”, a national computerized program through theNRMP (National Resident Matching Program), is held eachyear in March and matches prospective residents andresidency programs based on their top choices. This year thefollowing UND students matched in surgical specialties:

Honors Award for 3rd year medical studentsIn order for a student to achieve Honors they must score abovethe 90th percentile on the NBME shelf exam, score 8 or higheron the oral exam and be recommended for honors by themajority of their preceptors. Honors awarded for the 2014-15year: SW Campus in Bismarck – Layne Egan (Leal, ND). Wayne M. Swenson, MD Award by the North Dakota/SouthDakota Chapters of the American College of SurgeonsMedical students from first to fourth year, attending theUniversity of North Dakota School of Medicine, are eligibleto submit papers on surgery related research. Papers are judgedand selected by a selection committee in the Department ofsurgery for submission to the joint North Dakota/South DakotaChapter meeting. The paper that is selected is presented by thestudent at the joint North Dakota/South Dakota Chaptermeeting. The award recipient will receive a $300 check andthe Wayne M. Swenson, MD, Award plaque.

Residency Program ActivitiesFrank Low Research DayFrank Low Research Day provides a forum where faculty andstudents can be exposed to the latest research interests andactivities of their colleagues. Held for the first time in the springof 1981, Research Day was dedicated in the name of Frank N.Low, Ph.D., upon his retirement as a gesture of recognition forhis contributions to research at the School of Medicine andHealth Sciences.

Every year for the past few years, we have had surgicalresidents submit their abstracts to the Frank Low Research Dayheld every spring here at UND in Grand Forks. This year Drs.Eric Anderson, PGY IV, Zachary Ernst, PGY IV, DanielPersinger, PGY III, and Travis Swartz, PGY III attended. Beloware some of the pictures taken at Frank Low Research Day.

Residency Program Graduation/End of Year Activities (June26, 2015)

12th Annual Edwin C. James Lectureshipwhich was established in honor of EdwinC. James, MD who was Professor andChairman of the Department of Surgeryfrom 1980-89 and was the founder of theSurgical Residency Program. Each year weinvite a nationally recognized speaker tohonor this lectureship. This year’s Lecturerwas Ajit Sachdeva, MD, Director, Divisionof Education at the American College ofSurgeons. His talk was on Preparation ofResidents for Surgical Practice:

Challenges, Opportunities, and New Directions.

14th Annual Surgical Resident Research Colloquium was heldJune 26th and was attended by over 50 physicians, studentsand friends. The thirteen presentations by the PGY III, IV, andVs were judged by Ajit Sachdeva, MD (Director, Division ofEducation at the American College of Surgeons), CorneliusDyke, MD (Associate Dean of the SE Campus and AssistantProfessor of Surgery), and Jyotika Sharma, PhD, AssistantProfess of Microbiology & Immunology at UND.

To add to the day, posters were made by the PGY I and IIresidents showcasing the preliminary work on their researchprojects. This afforded each resident the opportunity to discusstheir projects with fellow surgeons and researchers to furtherimprove their research.

The top two presenters are honored at the Chief ResidentGraduation Banquet that follows the same evening. This yearwe had a number of excellent presentations, many of whichwill be subsequently submitted for publication or presentationat regional or national meetings. The colloquium also includespresentations that are judged for the North Dakota Chapter ofthe American College of Surgeons Commission on CancerCompetition and the North Dakota Chapter of the AmericanCollege of Surgeon Committee on Trauma Competition.

Program AnnouncementsIn May, the Department of Surgery wasapproved to become a SAGES FES(Fundamentals of Endoscopic Surgery)Testing Center. The FES test consists of “a

web-based multiple choice exam for evaluating cognitiveknowledge and judgement” as well as “a virtual reality platformto evaluate fundamental technical and psychomotor skills.”Residents graduating in the 2017-2018 academic year will berequired to pass the FES to be eligible for board certification.

The establishment of the FES Testing Center compliments ouralready exiting FLS (Fundamentals of Laparoscopic Surgery)Testing Center which was launched in 2010.

American Board of SurgeryBoard Certification ResultsRecent graduates of the UND School of Medicine and HealthSciences Surgical Residency Program have continued to dosatisfactorily on the American Board of Surgery (ABS)Examination. The recently published data from the ABS showthat the UND General Surgery Residency Program’s five-year,first-time-pass rate on the Qualifying Exam (written exam) is 87percent (13/15 passing) and on the Certifying Exam (oral exam)is 77 percent (10/13 passing). Our congratulations to our recentgraduates who have successfully obtained board certification:

Residency Program NewsRaelene Zospah Earns American Association for ThoracicSurgery Scholarship.Raelene Zospah, MD, first-year UNDsurgical resident, has been selected by theAmerican Association for Thoracic Surgery(AATS) for a scholarship to attend the2015 AATS Annual Meeting in Seattle onApril 25–29 as a 2015 AATS Member-for-a-Day Program Participant.

The AATS Member-for-a-Day Program willprovide an opportunity for North American medical students,general surgery residents, and third-year integratedcardiothoracic surgery residents to accompany an AATSMember Mentor, along with a resident member of the ThoracicSurgery Residents Association during portions of the AATSAnnual Meeting. The program is designed to offer insight intothe cardiothoracic surgery specialty and to provide anopportunity to network and build relationships within thecardiothoracic surgical community.

Up to 30 medical students, general surgery residents, and I-6cardiothoracic residents (within their first three years) will beselected to participate in this program.

Faculty NewsDyke new associate dean for the Southeast (Fargo) CampusCornelius McKown “Mac” Dyke, MD, hasbeen named associate dean for theSoutheast (Fargo) Campus at theUniversity of North Dakota School ofMedicine and Health Sciences. Dyke is anassistant professor of surgery at UND andan attending cardiothoracic surgeon forSanford Health in Fargo.

Dyke will succeed Dr. Julie Blehm as Southeast Campus dean.She is retiring on June 30. He will begin work at the UNDSMHS on July 1.

“Dr. Dyke has been an outstanding faculty member at UND forthe past four years, and has demonstrated a commitment to theSchool and our medical students and surgical residents,” saidJoshua Wynne, MD, MBA, MPH, UND vice president for healthaffairs and dean of the UND School of Medicine and HealthSciences. “He has a strong commitment to medical educationand will be devoted to this new position. As an added benefit,he also has a strong commitment to clinical research, and justrecently coauthored a paper published in the prestigious NewEngland Journal of Medicine. I am thrilled that he has acceptedour offer to be the next Southeast Campus dean.”
