CASE OF CATALEPSY IN CORK UNION WORKHOUSE.—There is at present in one of the male wards of the Corkworkhouse a man named O’Sullivan, aged fifty years of age,who for over twelve months-viz., April 27th, 1885-has beenin a deep sleep except when awakened to partake of food.On the date above mentioned he was found by the con-stabulary fast asleep in the open air, and removed to theworkhouse. When shaken roughly, he awakes and will dowhat he is told, and when food is placed before him he willtake it, but he has to be shaken at intervals to prevent himgoing to sleep. When he has finished eating, he falls asleepin whatever posture he happens to be in at the time; if putin a standing position with his hands above his head, heremains in that posture until disturbed; and if placed ontwo chairs, his head resting on one and his feet on theother, he remains so, the body being quite stiff.
THE LATE DR. THOMPSON.—At the meeting ofthe Council of the Irish Medical Schools and Graduates’Association, held on the 19th inst., the following resolutionwas passed, on the proposal of the Chairman of Council(Professor Gerald F.Yeo,M.D.), seconded by Dr. MacnaughtonJones (President)-viz.: "That the Council of the IrishMedical Schools’ and Graduates’ Association, having regardto the late Dr. Thompson’s intimate connexion with theAssociation, first as its founder and honorary secretary, andafterwards as honorary treasurer, hereby desires to conveyto Mrs. Thompson its deep sympathy with her in herbereavement, and to express its sense of the loss the Asso-ciation has sustained by the death of one to whom it hasbeen so much indebted." Brigade-Surgeon W. Alexander,M.D., has been appointed honorary treasurer to the Asso-ciation.
UNIVERSITY OF OXFORD.-Notices have been issuedthat examinations for the degree of Bachelor of Medicine willcommence in the Medical Department of the Museum asfollows :---The Second (or Final) Examination, Thursday,June 17tb, at 10 A.M. The First (or Scientific) Examina-tion, Saturday, July 3rd, at 10 A.M., for Chemistryand Physics; and on Monday, July 5th, for Anatomy andPhysiology. Candidates for either of these examinationsshould send in their names on or before June 3rd to " theRegius Professor of Medicine, Medical Department, Museum,Oxford." Candidates for the Scientific Examination are tostate whether they have passed the Preliminary HonourExamination in the School of Natural Science ; and, if not,whether they desire to present themselves for Physics andChemistry only at this examination, or for all the subjectsthereof. Both the examinations will be conducted this yearunder the conditions of the statute of 1860.
