Welcome ...3

Bath Weekend magazine is a 48-page weekly magazine free with the Bath Chronicle and is aimed primarily, though not exclusively, at women aged between 35 and 60. It’s big, it’s bold and it’s Bath.

We don’t know of another weekly newspaper that o ers its readers a glossy magazine. Just as Bath o ers something you can’t fi nd anywhere else so does the Bath Chronicle.Celebrity interviews, fashion and beauty sections add glamour, while our columnist Erica Pease celebrates the diversity of our incredible independent shopping scene. We sample delights served up by the hundreds of restaurants in the city and our wine expert adds a splash of red, white or rose.Apart from looking absolutely amazing and having local, engaging content the magazine provides the ideal collaboration between editorial and advertising. The ambition is to sell the features we write and also provide an opportunity for the many small independent business in the city to fi nd their voice. Since September we have introduced many exciting commercial platforms including Ask the Experts, Best Little Shops in Bath and You are Fabulous – all of which are paid for platforms and give the many independent businesses in Bath the chance to display their individuality in an impactful and a ordable way.We are also using the magazine to provide added value for some of our bigger and long-term customers. For example we are in the process of introducing a Dream Homes section for some of our estate agents, which consists of six pages on interior and exterior shots of some of the fabulous houses for sale in the city. Just like our website and our newspaper the magazine goes from strength to strength.

We aim to celebrale all the besl things about Bath - the wonderful arls scene, our amazing independenl shops and, of course, the fanlaslic people thal make our city so unique. We love being righl al lhe hearl of life in beauliful Bath.

There was a clear winner in the print stakes on the spring/summer catwalks. Stripes were seen everywhere, from Louis Vuitton (rendered in patent leather) and Chanel (long cardis and matching boots) to Paul Smith

(natty blazers and drop waist dresses). Set largely against a white background, these linear designs did have a whiff of the nautical about them, but simply whacking on an old Breton top won’t cut it this season. It’s time

Creative types often cite trips to far-flung destinations as inspiration for their work, and nowhere was this more obvious than the spring/summer catwalks, where Western designers imbued their collections with a wealth of Eastern influences. The escapism effect was felt most strongly at Maison Martin Margiela and Marni, where the finest fabrics were cut in cheongsam or kimono shapes, while at Carven and Lanvin, antique pottery prints were splashed on sporty separates. But when it comes to the high street interpretation, simply throwing on a kimono won’t cut it this season - this trend is all about taking traditional attire and bringing it bang up to date. Best known for her role as feisty Chrissie Williams in Holby City, actress Tina Hobley is coming to the Theatre Royal Bath

next week to perform in Peter James’ thriller Dead Simple. She told Lisa Evans why the thought of performing in Bath was one of the main reasons she decided to stay on the production tour

and why she’d love to move here one day.

Tina Hobley, a career-minded, driven, busy actress has big dreams for the future. But those dreams don’t involve

winning an Oscar, or performing alongside her favourite actor in a Spielberg blockbuster, they involve settling into an undisturbed, more relaxed way of life, in Bath.“I would love to live in Bath, it’s one of my favourite places in the country,” says the actress who is probably most recognised for her long-running role as feisty ward sister Chrissie Williams in Holby City. “The rich, relaxed pace of life it offers has always attracted me to it – it would be a dream to move there with my family. My good friends live nearby in Frome too, so a countryside Somerset home would be perfect for me.“Having grown up in London, I find peace and serenity in the country,” she adds. “Now I’m in my mid-forties, I enjoy a lazier and slower pace of life. In bed by 9.30pm is the perfect night out.”Come Monday, Tina will be spending a week in Bath where she’ll be performing in Peter James’ thriller Dead Simple at the Theatre

Royal Bath, and she can’t wait. In fact, she says one of the big reasons she’s seeing the Dead Simple six-month tour through to the end is because she wanted to perform in Bath.“To be honest with you I was only going to sign up to do nine weeks of the tour,” says Tina. “But I realised that if I pulled out, I wouldn’t be able to perform in Bath. The Theatre Royal Bath is my favourite theatre in the whole country; I last performed there 20 years ago in Angry Old Men, so I can’t wait to return. The thought of performing there again was one of the main reasons I wanted to stay on this tour,” she adds. “And I don’t really think I could give my character up at this point – I’m so attached to her. I couldn’t watch someone take over now.”Tina will be playing the role of Ashley Harper in Dead Simple – a thriller adapted from the book by international number one best-selling author Peter James. The book has sold over two million copies worldwide so far, and Tina has one of the lead roles in the adaptation.“She is a femme fatale to the extreme and,

on the surface, she has this perfect life that everyone would be jealous of – but all is not quite as it seems,” says Tina. “Then, all of a sudden, everything is then turned upside down, there are dark twists and turns and her fiancé – Michael – mysteriously disappears after his stag night prank goes wrong. I can’t give too much away as that will spoil it for everyone. But put it this way, I don’t like playing sweet little wallflowers – Chrissie in Holby City certainly wasn’t one of them, she loved a bit of drama – I like my characters to have something about them, a bit of grit, a bit of fire.“This is so far removed from Chrissie’s character, but it’s a fantastic part and I get to have four different personalities and guises,” she adds. “As this is a thriller it has that mysterious, exciting, gripping edge and you never know what’s going to happen next. It even keeps me on my toes, and I know what’s going to happen!”Tina returned to the stage this year after playing the part of Chrisse Williams in BBC1’s Holby City for 12 years and says she misses

It was four o’clock in the morning and my husband, Seth, rushed upstairs into the bedroom where I was sleeping and shouted ‘oh my god, I’ve found one!’ Startled awake, thinking something terrible had happened,

I shot bolt upright in a panic and asked Seth what was happening. “I’ve just found a campervan on eBay,” he said elatedly, like it was an obvious reason to wake me up. “Shall I buy it?” Too annoyed, tired and sleepy to care, I rolled over in bed and said “yeah, whatever, as long as it shuts you up”. Little did I know that this VW campervan would be exactly what I was looking for.Let’s firstly go back in time a little bit. I should mention that Seth and I had actively been looking for the ‘perfect’ campervan for a long time before his early morning outburst – it wasn’t just a random brain wave he’d had. For me, the ideal was a Volkswagen Type 2 with a bay window. We had travelled up and down the country, and even popped over to Wales a few times looking for this particular model, but we had been disappointed time and time again. Then, a few months down the line, Seth, who works nights, had a quick browse on eBay just before going to bed, and there it was,

a 30 year old VW with a Buy It Now price of £10,000. But it wasn’t the model I’d been dreaming of.I woke up feeling sure I’d dreamt it. I was scratching my head thinking ‘did that really happen?’ or, more to the point, ‘did I really say yes to Seth buying a campervan without so much as looking at it?’ As soon as I came to my senses I was instantly nervous and thought we’d made a big mistake - mainly because Seth had bought a Type 25, not the Type 2 that I’d wanted. I calmed down a lot knowing that we didn’t have to pay-up until we saw the camper in person and we were happy with it. A few days later, on a Friday evening straight after work, we headed up to view the camper in Winchester and Seth and I fell in love with it at first sight. It had been newly sprayed on the outside, it had been converted in the 90s so it was in good condition, and it was everything we were looking for. A lot of the VWs we’d seen previously were left-hand drives which we didn’t want, and some of them were also

very slow, which we wanted to avoid. But this one had the right kind of engine (which my husband knows all about as he’s a car valeter and his background is in the motors industry) and it was like a whippet compared to the others. I loved it, but part of me was still hesitant to hand over 10 grand to a woman we’d just met. We’d had a budget of £16,000 (because the Type 2 that I originally wanted was in this price range) which meant that if we bought this one we’d have money left over to make it our own. I had my heart set on the other model, but Seth twisted my arm and pointed out that this one had everything we wanted and more, and, bonus, it was a newer model. It wasn’t the vision I’d had but the price won me over; it was a bit of an impulse buy, but we went for it. We brought Nellie home last year (is it sad that I named her?) and I spent all summer thinking about how I would restore the interior and how I wanted it to look – as it was very dated. I looked through countless magazines, Clair pengilly, who works in Bath, tells

us about her experience of buying and lovingly restoring her vW campervan and how it has given her a new lease of life

He proved a right royal hoot in the West End version, and now comedian Joe Pasquale is bringing his interpretation

of King Arthur to The Bath Theatre Royal as he performs in Spamalot – a musical which lovingly rips off the classic film comedy Monty Python and the Holy Grail. The musical, directed by Christopher Luscombe, tells the legendary tale of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table and features a bevy of beautiful showgirls, witch burnings (cancelled due to health and safety), not to mention cows, killer rabbits and French people. And Joe says that he can’t wait to perform it in Bath.“I’ve never been to Bath before,” says the comedian. “That’s all the more reason to look forward to visiting. I’ve heard only good things about the city. It’s one of those places that everyone knows about, isn’t it; so I’m very excited to see it for the first time.”Although Joe will be spending a week in the city – from Monday May 25 to Saturday May 30 – that’s not to say he will have a lot of free time to himself.“The days are so busy when you’re touring,” he says. “I would love to be able to say that I’ll have the time to really get to know Bath, but when you add up the time it takes to do the shows and the press interviews there’s not a great deal of time left over; so it’s a good job that I have so much fun

being in the show.”And there are so many scenes that he looks forward to acting in the show - especially the ‘Black Knight scene where he chops off his arms and legs’.“It’s also got a wonderful score, which I think people forget,” he says referring to Eric Idle tunes like He Is Not Dead Yet, Knights of the Round Table, Find Your Grail and one of the nation’s favourite comedy songs Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life. “Musically, it can stand up there with other West End shows. We really encourage audience participation too, and we always get people up on stage which they seem to love. I think the best thing about it is no one show is the same as the other, you go with the flow of the audience, and adapt the show according to their reactions.”The shows aren’t without their pressure for Joe, though, who says he wants to do the ‘fantastic’ script justice as it’s got such a cult following.“You always want to do the best you can do,” he says. “And that goes for any show, but this show in particular, as it changes on a weekly basis. You’ve got to keep up and keep it as fresh as you can. We have topical things in there, like Mary Berry. It keeps it lively, but everything gets put past the director, it’s not like we go on stage and do things off the cuff.”Well, having said that, Joe does have two

Superfoods are as well-known now as Superman was in the Seventies, and are credited by some with almost as much

power as the legendary superhero himself. We asked two of Bath’s health and fitness experts what they think, and their

answers couldn’t have been more different.

While they won’t give you powers of flight or the strength to chuck buses, nutrient-dense superfoods

- such as pomegranate, coconut oil, kale and red cabbage - are so-called as they’re believed to be ultra good for us, helping boost general health, super-charging the immune system, guarding our memories and keeping illness at bay, including cancers and heart disease. While kale and cabbages have obviously been around for donkey’s years, the term ‘superfood’ hasn’t, but when something is granted the impressive label, sales often soar. The amount of red cabbage bought in Britain last year grew by nearly 50 per cent compared to the previous 12 months, spending on kale has doubled in the last five years, and sales of coconut oil in the UK has nearly tripled in just two years. But are these so-called superfoods the dietary magic bullets they’re made out to be? Here are the opinions of two of Bath’s health and fitness experts.

“NOT THAT SPECIAL”says Steve Wootten of Relentless Training Systems Ltd

Do you think the label ‘superfoods’ draws people in to think they are eating something really healthy, but then they forget about the basic principles of health?I think the label gives a false level of importance to many people. The superfood

“WE SHOULD EAT THEM EVERY DAY”says Zita Alves of Zest Bootcamp

What do you think are the benefits of superfoods? Many superfoods have a high ORAC rating which is an Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity - this is an antioxidant potency indicator. We are surrounded by free radicals in the form of pollution, stress, toxins and even intense exercise which can increase the number of free radicals which damage and age our cells. Anti-oxidants help counteract

superfoods

unpe e l ed

label is given to foods perceived to have significant health benefits over other foods. As a personal trainer who helps people improve their body composition and health there are many other areas of someone’s diet that are more important to address before the addition of superfoods.

Can one superfood in isolation have a profound effect on our health?Variety in your diet is key to meeting all your nutrient requirements. Vegetables and fruits of different colours contain unique health components for a healthy diet. For example, red berries being rich in antioxidants while orange and yellow fruits and vegetables are higher in Vitamin C. To depend on one superfood to meet the various requirements is absurd. Variety is key to an overall healthy diet.

Do you think people forget about nutritionally complete ‘ordinary foods’ (like eggs) and think they are better off with a superfood?I think there isn’t enough importance placed on understanding the fundamentals of nutrition such as macronutrients and fibre requirements. I’ve noticed from consultations that many people are very low on protein, high on carbohydrates and sometimes down on recommended fibre. These should be addressed before worrying about superfoods.

Do you think people are drawn to exotic-sounding and often pricey

this damage and can reduce the risk of cell mutation and DNA damage to avoid long term diseases such as cancer.

What do you think are the best superfoods?Garlic, berries, spirulina and dark leafy greens. They are nutrient-rich food considered to be especially beneficial for health and wellbeing. In terms of volume compared to calories, they are packed with vitamins, minerals and other nutrients especially anti-oxidants. Garlic has strong evidence to suggest it can improve circulatory health by facilitating blood flow, reducing blood pressure, and improving cholesterol levels. Garlic also provides antioxidant benefits because it supports the activity of glutathione, an antioxidant enzyme. There is also evidence to suggest garlic

superfoods - such as goji berries, chia seeds and teff grains – because they are frequently in the headlines, and linked with health-conscious celebrities like Madonna and Gwyneth Paltrow?People are drawn to superfoods because it is much easier to rationalise to yourself that you are missing one important piece of the puzzle rather than having to completely overhaul your nutrition.

What would you suggest is the key to a healthy diet?A healthy diet should be one that meets nutritional requirements through a variety of foods and food groups as well as allowing for occasional indulgences in moderation. It should be one that promotes healthy body composition and bodily functions.

consumption may ward off upper respiratory infections. It even has an anti-cancer effect. Eating or supplementing one to two cloves of garlic a day is one of the healthiest habits you can have.

If you compared a person who doesn’t eat superfoods compared to someone who does, what differences would you expect to see?Although lifestyle and genetics will have an important part to play on people’s health, if someone eats a large amount of superfood on a regular basis we would expect to see better immunity, energy levels (this is a big one for many people), skin, brain function, joints, hormonal symptoms for women and more. However let’s be sensible - if you still eat junk

food then don’t expect to feel good just by adding in some superfoods.

In what quantity and how regularly should we be eating superfoods? We should be eating them at least once a day. I believe that most of our diet should be made up of vegetables, nuts, fruits, seeds, meat, eggs and fish, good fats and oils such as avocado and olive oil, as well as some grains such as rice, quinoa and oats. Also, all the other superfoods such as chia seeds, coconut oil and raw cacao give your body a variety of nutrients so why not mix it up on a weekly basis with smoothies and loads of other interesting ways to incorporate real food into your diet. Imagine your body is like a Ferrari - if you put the best quality oil into it then it will work better and last longer.

LH: A hair-up style works really well for the ‘wow’ factor. The more simple styles are: horizontal rolls, a simple big bun, or a side loose bun. For something more interesting, an upside down Dutch braid with some messy curls would work well. We also highly recommend enhancing your style with a colour; we offer all colours including semi-permanent dyes if you’re after something just for the Christmas season. CR: Enchanting natural beauty curls are always a best bet, just loosely pinned around the crown on to the nape of the neck.

Sian David paid a visit to Koh Thai tapas on Broad Street to try a taste of Asia

It’s been a long time since I went to Thailand. Depressingly, it’s coming up for five years. I spent three weeks there

in 2010 and fell in love with the place. The culture, the weather and oh, the food. Thai food: creamy curries, spicy stir fries; hot, sour, sweet and salty. It’s some of freshest, cleanest and tastiest food in the world, but it’s not easy to get right. But at Koh Thai Tapas in Broad Street — one of a family of Koh Thais across the UK — you’ll be able to try a host of traditional dishes cooked to perfection by chefs who hail from Thailand iteself. The Bath restaurant is in a stunning Georgian townhouse in the centre of the city. Just a waltz and a twirl away from the Assembly Rooms, the Cathedral and the Roman Baths, the restaurant is a warm candlelit sanctuary spread over three floors. The concept of Koh Thai Tapas was born out of the the founders’ frustration with the status quo. They wanted to create a place they would like to visit themselves. A place where the holy flavours of Thai cuisine could be shared and sampled with fiery cocktails, farflung beers and world-class music. A place at once authentic, beautiful, unpretentious, relaxed and refined. The result, the first Koh Thai Tapas in Boscombe and a subsequent expansion which includes a restaurant in Bristol. The most unique offering at Koh Thai Tapas is the sharing concept menu. Pay a set price for a selection of dishes to share (price is per head), which can be made exactly to your specifications. Don’t like fish? No problem, you’ll get more chicken dishes, or beef, or whichever you prefer. Allow your server and the chefs to bring a selection of dishes to your table for an authentic Thai experience. We had a bumper banquet (see panel, left) but

particular mention must go to the succulent 24-hour ribs, marinated overnight in a delicious sauce (the recipe for which I’m told is a closely guarded secret). The dim sum is to die for, and I’ve never had such perfect sea bass. But it’s not just about the food. Believe me, the food is incredible. But you’ll also want to go for the service. Attentive and friendly but never pushy, the staff can’t do enough for you (yet they manage to leave you in peace and privacy too. And the atmosphere is quite unique — it’s chilled enough for dinner with friends but fancy enough for a romantic date.I couldn’t describe it as a “best-kept secret” sort of place, not least because I must have told a hundred people to pay them a visit since I W

East Somerset, dealing with issues like physical disability, domestic abuse, sexual violence or long-term mental health problems.Becky Ricards Small, partner at Withy King and trustee and Chair of the B&NES Committee at Quartet Community Foundation, says: “I’m delighted that the evening was so well received. Our business and private clients were among those invited to find out first-hand what charitable giving can achieve. Withy King is a strong supporter of Quartet’s work, which includes setting up charitable funds on behalf of individuals and businesses and matching them with relevant beneficiaries, which are often little known and have very few resources.”Caroline Duckworth, CEO of Quartet Community Foundation in the West of England, says: “our research highlights that, while Bath is a beautiful heritage city, there are still many people in need here. We appreciated the opportunity to say thank you to our supporters and to meet lots of new businesses and individuals keen to come on board.”.

‘wow’ at a Christmas party next week. What hairstyles are on trend right now? (I have long hair).

A hair-up style works really well for the ‘wow’ factor. The more simple styles are: horizontal rolls, a simple big bun, or a side loose bun. For something more interesting, an upside down Dutch braid with some messy curls would work well. We also highly recommend enhancing your style with a colour; we offer all colours

A great outfit is all about finishing touches and as every savvy shopper knows, a well-chosen accessory is the simplest (and probably the cheapest) way to bring your wardrobe staples up to date. As Michael Kors says: “I’ve always thought of accessories as the exclamation point of a woman’s outfit.”We love the new SS15 range at Accessorize on Union Street including the leather-look, structured Charlotte Work Bag in cornflower blue with luxe metallic detailing; the shimmering, holographic effect cross-body box bag; the regal-inspired Provence Statement Necklace bedecked with opulent indigo, lilac and green stones, and the stylish and striking round sunglasses with luxe golden elements

hen people think of liposuction it’s hard not to think about painful, expensive surgical

procedures in a hospital that take weeks to recover from. NU U Laser & Beauty Clinic, newly opened in Bath, on the other hand, is offering a variety of non-invasive fat-reducing procedures that are as kind on your purse as they are on you.Their most popular treatment at the moment doesn’t even need to be done in the clinic, it can be done by you, at home, while you watch TV on the sofa. Their Home Lipo kit, which can be rented for £50 per week, is totally painless and effectively targets stubborn fatty areas. It works by combining two processes together (cavitation and radio frequency). After the cavitation handset disrupts and emulsifies the fat cells using ultrasound technology, the radio frequency handset stimulates the collagen

production and strengthens, tones and tightens the skin structure. The combination of the two processes work hand in hand to achieve a winning beauty treatment with instant, permanent results and you can treat any of the following areas: lower and upper abdomen, inner and outer thighs, male chest, underarms, chin and jowls, hips , knees and cellulite. And as for in-salon fat reduction options, NU U has two other extremely popular treatments. If you want a procedure that involves nothing more than lying on a bed for 10 minutes while painless lasers immediately work away your flabby areas then try Strawberry Laser Lipo. This procedure incorporates laser beams that penetrate the fat layer and create pores in the fat cells. The cells leak and consequently shrink in size, then the lymphatic system removes that fat in the same easy way that fatty foods are digested. Of course you’ll need to commit to regular

exercise and healthy eating to avoid the cells from ballooning again. Cardio exercise helps to burn the fat as energy and drinking a lot of water flushes the fatty liquids through the lymphatic system. It really is that simple.Another ground-breaking treatment that NU U offers is the Cryolipolysis-Freeze Sculptor that kills off fat cells by bringing them to a temperature just above freezing. This is another painless procedure that works towards eliminating up to 40 per cent of your body fat in your chosen area in one session. The removal of the fat cells is permanent, and does not damage any other cell in the body. The treatment doesn’t require any exercise at all so it’s perfect for people who have no time to dedicate to a gym membership. So if you’re looking for a painless fat-loss treatment that will get you looking great in no time at all, NU U has some fantastic options for you.
