Your challenge is to take 25 photographs (maybe even just one a day) of all the things mentioned in the grid opposite BUT make them interesting by taking them as close-ups (macros) or by cropping to just an interesting part of the image.

Try to think creatively about what things might fit into each of the categories (for keys I used piano keys, for a tunnel I used a cup-holder and for a letter I used letters on my computer keyboard).

Arrange the photographs into a grid in the same order as shown opposite and save it as a .jpeg image.

We can’t wait to see what you come up with!

The work of other artists, designers, photographers and creatives in general is a great starting place to get inspiration for your own work.

David Hockney used photographs to create interesting collage pieces called “JOINERS”.

PHOTO COLLAGE CHALLENGE

Your challenge is to take lots of photographs of a person, place (maybe your garden or your room) or an object all from SLIGHTLY different angles.

Put the photographs together as shown to create a composite collage or “joiner”.

There are more examples on the pages that follow. Use cropping and selection to choose what parts of the image you will layer over each other.

DIGITALLY DRAW OVER PHOTOGRAPHS

The work of other artists, designers, photographers and creatives in general is a great starting place to get inspiration for your own work.

May Xiong creates these haunting photographs which show painted figures overlaid with a web of linear structures.

The images explore the human mind; the interconnected maze of human thought.

DIGITALLY DRAW OVER PHOTOGRAPHS

Make some images of people or objects and use digital drawing techniques to enhance / work into the image. You can use a self-portrait, a family member or a picture of your favourite recording artist.

Maybe you want to draw the onlookers attention to a particular part of the image or to emphasise a rhythm, pattern or shapes that recur within that image. You could even use a natural forms image. See the slides that follow for more examples and inspiration.

In digitally manipulated works by Maykel Lima, lines of pixels are stretched to the edge of the image – a promising approach for those who wish to create abstract or partially abstract photographs.

This is a relatively simple process using image manipulation software, yet it requires careful selecting and balancing of space, form, line and colour.

USE PIXEL STRETCH TECHNIQUES ON PORTRAITS

Maybe you want to draw the onlookers attention to a particular part of the image or to emphasise a rhythm, pattern or shapes that recur within that image.

CREATE AN ‘IDENT’ FOR THE UTC TV SCREENS

UTC@MediaCityUK

Page 33: Media UK€¦ · that we provide free of charge to all of our students at UTC@MediaCityUK - it’s not a problem! There are lots of completely FREE versions of design software for

To put it briefly, an ident is that little snippet of footage you see in between each television programme you watch on the same channel.

An Ident (short for identifier) is plain and simply the way a television production company or channel keeps you reminded that you’re watching their channel.

Some well-known UK TV idents are shown opposite.

CREATE A CHANNEL ‘IDENT’ FOR UTC-TV

We have information screens all over the UTC displaying information and students’ work. We already have an ident - but it’s OLD and we are looking for a fresh new one!

We would like YOU to design our new ident for us. It can be a still image or an animation; it might be a drawing, a painting - whatever you would like - but it MUST feature the UTC logo somewhere.

We also have the ‘tagline’ “Create your own story.” that we’d like you to include somewhere, somehow. How you do it is completely up to you. Surprise us!

Brand design is BIG business. Brand design can also make or break a product, it also gives us an idea of the quality of the product. Great brand design makes us want to BUY the product!

CREATE A BRAND IDENTITY FOR A GROOMING/ DEODORANT RANGE

Your challenge is to design the packaging for a grooming / deodorant product range called “ICONIQ”. It could be for men, women or gender neutral.

Use mockups to display your designs in place. We have tutorials to show you how to do just that.

Think about the kind of customer you are trying to sell your product to; age, gender etc. are all important considerations.

You can download the mockup from:

‘Vlog' stands for ‘video blog' and it's exactly that: content that you would write a blog post on, but instead you talk to a camera about it.

There are two main styles of vlog: a ‘talking-head' video where the camera is on a tripod (or on a stack of books depending on your equipment budget!) and stays steady while the vlogger talks about a subject, or a ‘follow me around' vlog where the vlogger will take a camera with them and film clips as they go about their day or week.

RECORD YOUR OWN VLOG

What you need to do:

1. Decide what topic you would like to vlog on? Fashion, Food, Sport, Politics, a particular hobby– it really is up to you!

2. Do some research into the topic? Can you use any quotes, facts or props to back up what you are going to be talking about?

3. Write some key points on prompt cards

4. Decide how you want to shoot your video

5. Shoot your video and save

6. If you want to you can edit it using a free editing app like iMovie

7. Share your video with us on twitter @CreativeUTCMCUK

Posters occupy a space between art and advertising. They have a clear commercial purpose - to promote an event or product - but they also have artistic value.

Go online and find a poster that you like or a poster for a film that you like.

ANALYSE A FILM POSTER

When analysing the poster, you should consider the following broad questions before you start to focus on the details:

• What are the main colours used in the poster? What do they connote or represent?

• What symbols are used in the poster?

• What are the main figures/objects/background of the poster? Are they represented photographically, graphically, or illustratively?

• Are the messages in the poster primarily visual, verbal, or both?

• Who do you think is the intended audience for the poster?

Football, the UK and Culture.

80 years separate these two images of the England football teams. What differences are there between the two pictures?

How has the sport, the country and the culture of the United Kingdom changed over the time covered by these two images?

THE BEAUTIFUL GAME!

Football has never been more popular, more powerful or more wealthy.

In the space of just two decades, the Premier League has transformed the way the game is played, watched and run in this country.

Run-down grounds have been turned into shiny, all-seater stadiums with megastores and restaurants serving three-course meals and fine wines.

What other major sporting and cultural changes have occurred in the time between the first picture and the second? Write a piece (with illustrations) for a magazine article or presentation.

Create an imaginary time-capsule and create a list of at least ten items that will inform the people who might find it about life (good and bad) in the UK in 2020.

Explain why you have included each item and how it typifies life and lifestyle in 2020.

Write a letter to the people who find the capsule and tell them about life in 2020 and what you HOPE life and the world is like for them in the future.

Create a historical guide to where you live and how your environment and the local history might have shaped the person that you are today.

A GUIDE TO MY LOCAL AREA (AND ME).

You should show sights of historical interest no matter how insignificant they may seem.

You can include family memorabilia (Grandad’s medals?), evidence of family history (old family photographs) or cultural, social, environmental changes in your area over time.

Are there any memorials or important buildings where you live? (You’ll be surprised how many there are if you do a little research).

RIGHT UP MY STREET

Back in time for my house.

Where you live now might have been farmland or woodland 100 years ago.

Industrialisation made cities spread out into the surrounding areas and accommodation was built to house the thousands of workers that were needed.

RIGHT UP MY STREET!

Find out what your street / area was like 100 years ago. Who lived there, what was there, what has changed.

Did the place you live now even exist 100 years ago? If not, what was there instead?

How was where you live affected by industrialisation and two World Wars?

Has your area been subject to “gentrification”?

Display it in the most interesting way you can think of (wall-chart, video, picture gallery etc.)
