- Access

The University is introducing a single card system, all staff and students of the University are

provided with the single card ID and access card. As the ground floor of MediaCityUK is open to

all students and the general public, the single card is only operational in staff areas and teaching

spaces. All staff and students must have their single ID card clearly visible at all times. You

will need this card to access rooms you have booked for timetabled events or meetings. If you

have booked out a room or studio you will only be granted access for the duration of your

booking.

The staff areas on floors 2 and 3 are gated off and your single card will allow you access into

this. If you are meeting visitors or students you will need to arrange for suitable access to

controlled spaces or to use the open meeting areas.

The single card will allow you to access your printing from any printer in the building.

Students will be issued with single cards at registration and will then liaise with Student Life.

- Desk labelling and numbering – all permanent members of academic staff are allocated a desk

with an odd number, non permanent members of staff are able to hot desk and use any desk

with an even number.

- Digital library – the concept of the Digital Library includes the shift from print to electronic

material where possible, the discovery of resources both print and electronic and the support

needed to access those resources. Support can include induction, information literacy sessions

and ICT training. The majority of the learning materials (film, audio, books, journal articles)

required for those modules taught at MediaCityUK are available digitally via the Library’s

resource discovery tool – SOLAR. Assistance using the Digital Library can be sought at the

student support desk on the first floor.

- Digital Performance Lab

This experimental performance space combines the technology of a TV studio, the excitement of

live theatre with the visual experience of immersive cinema in a double-height space. Its

technical infrastructure is that of a black box theatre, hard-wired over a grid at floor and ceiling

levels, controlled from a fully equipped flexible control room with verbal connection via a digital

intercom system. The space is particularly suited to research-led practice in creative media and

new forms of digitally enhanced performance.

- Largest HD Screen in Europe

- The extensive fibre optic and digital network infrastructure within the DPL will allow

multiple high speed HD video and audio connections throughout the space with access to

multicast enabled video conferencing technology

- Black box theatre with fully equipped control room

- Multi-use space that can be used for computer games, animation, dance etc. It can

accommodate specialist teaching, live performance and creative technology installations

- Egg, The

An open and fully accessible space on the ground floor, that enables students and the public at

all levels to view and engage the innovative research going on in the university. It also has

potential to be used as an open laboratory, engaging the public in interactive media

technologies in unique ways. The Egg area will allow the display and high definition capture of

performance, research and demonstration using a range of technologies and collaborative

spaces, with the following features:

- A 120 Christie Microtile multi-modal wall which can display extremely high res video at 8K, down

to at least 16 multiple videos at once. Attached to 3 dedicated video servers with 2 high end

interactive graphics machines, it can stream content through sources and feeds from various

studios in the building. It can also potentially pick up live streams from anywhere in the world. It

can be made to be fully immersive, with up to 3 microsoft kinect sensors attached to the wall to

enable interactive videos and software through gestures and movement.

Page 7: This is an A-Z guide of MediaCityUK, containing useful … · 2014. 1. 13. · This is an A-Z guide of MediaCityUK, containing useful information to both staff and students. Typical

- The Christie wall also has the potential to be broken down or completely moved in set

configurations around the exhibition area, the café and in the corridor to maximise their impact.

Different sets of tiles can be positioned and videos can play from one section to another, which

can also be fully immersive. This is currently going through testing and we will be releasing more

information about these configurations early next year.

- 10 interactive touch tables featuring the latest touch technology customised for the university.

Here students and the public will be able to catch up with latest news and events. In time we'll

be trailing some of the latest touchtable software solutions produced by researchers here on

campus. Two of these tables can be viewed on the Christie tile wall.

- Users can plug in various mobile devices, such as ipads, iphones, latops etc to either present or

control software on the tile wall.

- A lecture/ exhibition space is available behind the wall that seats around 30 people and it is

available for booking with a HD ready projector and screen. This area is also fully compatible

with a range of mobile devices.

- The University's vision for the building is a hub and a portal to enable the coming together of

people at different levels, to interface and to generate innovation from this area.
