The Guardian’s Oliver Wainwrighttalks about architecture

criticism in the 21st century.

AA couple of things struck me on meeting Oliver Wainwright. The first is that he’s irritatingly young: The Guardian architecture and design critic has just made it into his 30s and, as a result, can pull off that beard and scraped-back long hair look convincingly. And the sec-ond is that he’s fantastically late for our 6 p.m. meeting in a Shoreditch-based coffeehouse around the corner from his office. However, his excuse is properly juicy: he’s been leaked a letter suggesting that Boris Johnson – London mayor and, if you believe the hype, Britain’s prime-minister-in-waiting – has been less

than honest about how the city’s proposed Gar-den Bridge will be funded. While Johnson has gone on record denying that any further taxpayers’ money

will be used to subsidize the Heather-wick Studio-designed scheme, the letter implies that the public will be liable for the bridge’s annual £3.5-million mainte-nance bill in perpetuity. Wainwright had to get the piece out before our meet-ing and receives a couple of calls about while we’re talking. An 1,800-word story is duly published later that night, and people are already talking about it when I arrive in my office the next morning.

A Classic Shows One’s Colours.

“A synthesis of arts”:

Le Corbusier’s colours and classic switches.

The minimalist forms of Le Corbusier‘s buildings, furniture and studies, as well as his exceptional “Poly-

chromie architecturale”, continue to infl uence the world of architecture. In appreciation of Le Corbusier‘s

works and inspired by his colours, JUNG is offering a reinterpretation of its classic LS 990 range of switches

in the 63 shades of Les Couleurs® Le Corbusier as a worldwide exclusive. Forty years after the launch of

the LS 990 series, a classic is now showing its colours.

RiederA concrete skin to withstand the harshest conditions

Just because a building is small, it’s not necessarily easier to design or to construct than one many times larger. That’s doubly true when the tiny structure in question perches on a mountain, like the Alpine shelter built by OFIS Architects, students from Harvard Graduate School of Design, and Austrian concrete company Rieder. An inaccessible location, coupled with the hostile climate, multiplied the challenges involved in the project and called for some radical solutions. The shelter replaces a 50-year-old structure made from iron sheet that stood in the same location: some 2,118 m up on the face of Mount Skuta in the Kamnik–Savinja Alps in Slovenia. The new version started life in an architectural-design studio at the Harvard Graduate School of Design, led by Rok Oman and Spela Videcnik of Slovenian studio OFIS Architects. Several student groups working on the challenge produced 12 proposals that met site

conditions, material requirements and programmatic considerations. Of these, the design by Frederick Kim, Katie MacDonald and Erin Pellegrino was selected for further development with OFIS. Inspired by traditional Alpine architecture, the shelter, which provides basic accommodation for eight climbers, is divided into three sections, each with its own pitched roof. Glazed gables allow for spectacular, vertigo-inducing views. The outer shell, in Rieder’s silvery grey, glass-fibre-reinforced öko skin concrete panels, harmonizes with the rugged landscape in colour and texture while wrapping the building in a highly weather-resistant, protective skin. Although only 13 mm thick, and thus relatively lightweight and easy to transport, öko skin offers excellent protection from the elements while needing little to no maintenance for a period of up to 50 years. It is the result of 55 years of experience and experimentation in concrete

materials by the company, which has developed a special competence centre for façade claddings. Rieder’s involvement with the project began with an invitation to company owner Wolfgang Rieder from the dean of Harvard University to attend the GSD Talks in Cambridge, MA, to talk about innovations and cross-disciplinary changes in architecture. ‘The exchange of ideas with talented young people is vital,’ says Wolfgang Rieder. ‘We can learn a lot from them.’ He emphasizes that Rieder is not only a product supplier, but also a provider of solutions, offering comprehensive services in the areas of substructure, mounting and logistics. ‘It has always been our quest,’ he says, ‘to tackle the problems faced by the world of architecture and to find solutions together with architects and planners.’ The Alpine shelter is no exception to this approach. In addition to the façade, Rieder

sponsored the substructure and helped the students develop the modular design. Rieder’s support allowed the hut to be manufactured off-site and then airlifted in three sections to the mountain face by helicopter, courtesy of the Slovenian army and the local mountain rescue team. Transport and on-site construction took only one day – time being of the essence in such an inhospitable location. ‘It was wonderful to see this building, designed at Harvard, come to life in the Slovenian mountains,’ says Wolfgang Rieder. ‘The whole project contributes to our aim to build a global network of academics, researchers, designers and architects to develop a better world. Merely adding a new colour or a new surface to our product range is not enough. Through our network, we are developing some really innovative ideas, and we hope to bring them to the market soon.’rieder.cc

Doors and Windows

Aluminium framesAllaert AluminiumSince 1955, Valentin Allaert has produced aluminium constructions. Before that, he made windows, doors and hardware in steel, copper and bronze. In 1980, Serge Allaert succeeded his father. Serge’s son Thomas joined him recently. He’s the seventh consecutive generation in the building and construction sector. This villa in Harelbeke, Belgium, was designed by Francisca Hautekeete Architectuur. The architect used a combination of Reynaers and Otiima profiles. The Alinel wall cladding is also an accomplishment by Allaert Aluminium.allaertaluminium.be

Window systemsAluprofAluprof’s MB-FERROLINE window system is the perfect solution to renovating monumental buildings. The correct appearance of the windows is preserved by imitating the steel joinery, while exceptionally good technical design parameters are insured at the same time. Various types of inward opening, outward opening and fixed windows can be constructed that, in addition to their perfect thermal insulation, are characterized by their very good sound insulation, wind and water resistance and high durability.aluprof.eu

Sectional doorsBredaItalian manufacturer Breda, which produces sectional doors for residential and industrial use, has created the Multi Rib. The design is the result of a multiple combination of many small waves. The optical effect on the panels is very original with a flat coat. Multi Rib is available in the colours White C21, Grey RAL 9006, Grey RAL 7016, Brown C17, Green RAL 6005 and Green RAL 6009, for the most popular and appreciated Breda models. Another innovation by Breda is Micacea, paint that combines acrylic resins with micaceous iron pigments. The result is a refined metallic effect – available in Black Smoke, Green Pine, Old Red, Red Scorched Earth, Silver Grey, Metallic or Graphite – that reproduces an antique wrought iron effect. bredasys.com

Balcony windowsFakroFakro’s Galeria balcony windows make it possible to create a balcony in an attic space. In sloped roofs without a knee wall, you can glaze the entire roof with large balcony windows that provide ample natural light and a panoramic view. The FGH-V Galeria is an innovative window that creates a balcony when the sashes are opened. The upper sash opens upward and has an innovative mechanism that allows it to be left in any position, while the lower sash can be tilted forward. When the lower sash is closed, the balcony rails are hidden inside the window and are not visible above the roof surface, do not collect dirt or spoil the aesthetics of the roof.fakro.com

Inspired by the streets of London and the gritty backdrops of railways, tunnels of factories, workshops and warehouses. The surfaces – cracked paving stones and brick blocks make up the crumbling industrial landscape while the massive tidal River Thames splits the city in two, and the new reflective glass towers start to dominate the skyline.

The new Industrial Landscape collection is a series of seven carpet designs created by Tom Dixon in collaboration with ege carpets. Available in tiles and broadloom transforming into different expres-sions that reinterpret the rough, raw everyday surfaces that define the London landscape.
