ANNIVERSARYIn 2018, will reach a significant milestone in its rich history as it celebrates its 60th anniversary.

DARPA TURNS 60!The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), famed for often making science fiction become reality, will celebrate its 60th birthday in 2018. The hi-tech agency that brought us robot rovers, satellites, the internet, and stun guns, just to name a few of its ground-breaking innovations, has led the globe for six decades now in turning futuristic ideas to reality.

Launched in 1958 from the U.S. response to the Soviet launching of Sputnik, since that historic turning point DARPA’s mission has been to assure that the U.S. maintains a lead in applying state-of-the-art technology for military capabilities and to prevent technological surprise from the nation’s adversaries. The DARPA organization was as unique as its role, reporting directly to the Secretary of Defense and operating in coordination with DOD but completely independent of the military research and development (R&D) establishment. Strong support from the senior DOD management has always been essential since DARPA was designed to be an anathema to the conventional military and R&D structure and a deliberate counterpoint to traditional thinking and approaches.

To commemorate the 60th anniversary, its people and their accomplishments, Faircount will be releasing a special, high-quality commemorative publication, titled DARPA: 60 Years of Shaping the Future. The book will be a follow up to the 50th anniversary publication DARPA: 50 Years of Bridging the Gap, produced by Faircount in 2008, and will continue our ongoing series of works dedicated to defense research and development organizations, that also includes NASA: 50 Years of Exploration and Discovery; Air Force Research Lab Materials and Manufacturing Directorate: Celebrating a Century of Scientific

Excellence; and many others too numerous to list.

DARPA: 60 Years of Shaping the Future is unquestionably going to be another collector’s edition and an absolute must-read for technology innovation professionals and general interest readers alike. Aside from offering an insightful and rich history of America’s leading tech agency, the book will be special in that it may well be the only publication to open with messages and interviews from six previous DARPA directors.

DARPA DIRECTORS BIOs

Dr. Anthony J. Tether was Director of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) from 2001 to his retirement in 2009. As Director, Dr. Tether was responsible for management of the agency’s projects for high-payoff, innovative research and development. Some of the notable projects during his time at the agency include High-Productivity Computing Systems, the Quantum Key Distribution Network, and the Autonomous High Altitude Refueling program.

Dr. Fernando “Frank” L. Fernandez was appointed Director of DARPA in 1998, and served through 2001. Under Dr. Fernandez’ leadership, DARPA trailblazed paths in biological warfare defense, information security, precision strike, and robotics.

Dr. Raymond S. Colladay served as DARPA Director beginning in early 1988 through May of 1989. During his time at the helm, DARPA developed and improved new high-temperature materials and carbon composites, parallel computer processing, next generation internet technologies, and short takeoff and vertical landing breakthroughs necessary for the development of the F-35B.

Dr. Robert R. Fossum served as director of DARPA from 1977 to 1981. During his time as director, DARPA achieved success in developing stealth technology, helped design parts for the Hubble Telescope, founded the DARPA Defense Sciences Office, introduced the No-Tail-Rotor Helicopter (NOTAR), and much more.

Dr. Stephen J. Lukasik became DARPA Deputy Director in 1967 and Director in 1971. The period was marked by major new technologies and transferring results of ARPA research into deployed DOD and civilian systems. The new work included ARPANET expansion and Internet protocols, and use of email for long-distance collaboration. Other important national security

technologies were smart weapons, anti-submarine warfare capabilities using towed acoustic arrays, artificial intelligence, speech understanding, unmanned aerial vehicles, and more.
