1Donna Buang, WarburtonTime/distance: 7hr/14.3km. Grade: hard.At 1245m, Mt Donna Buang is a hard day’s slog but offers great panoramic views of the Yarra Valley, the Dandenongs and all the way to Melbourne on a clear day. At the summit there’s a 21m lookout tower that gives great views. Large mountain ash and myrtle beech trees make for spectacular scenery. In winter toboggan runs open to take advantage of the heavy snows, but you should avoid the walk during these months.
THE WALK: from Warburton Hwy cross the Yarra and walk up Martyr Rd past the golf course. Head north along a track at the end of Martyr Rd and then follow it east past an old aqueduct. Soon you’ll begin a steep climb into lyrebird country and will reach the sealed access road. Head south-east towards some communication towers, then past several lookouts with views of the Yarra to Mt Victoria. A foot track will take you north along the spur and up to Mt Donna Buang. Walk back the way you came.
PUBLIC TRANSPORT: take the train from Flinders St station to Lilydale, then catch one of the hourly 683 buses to Warburton, getting off at Scotchmans Creek Road. The last bus back to the city leaves for Lilydale at 8:30pm on a Saturday and 8:10pm on a Sunday.
