In what ways does your media product USE, DEVELOP or CHALLENGE forms and conventions

of existing media products?

Page 5: Media eva

Conventions

Music:The music I have used as a backing track for my soap trailer is Rihanna Feat Eminem – Love the way you lie (Part 2). I have decided to imbed this sound track as I feel it fits in with my soap as it is all about a lie.. Its a low pitch, beaty song which fits in with most of the movements made by the cast.

Lighting: the lighting used in soaps is usely natural light, but has a filter to make it dull, to match with the theme and emotions in the soaps. For my trailer I have used natural light.

Mise en scene: this was important when making the trailer, we tried to show it was a school/college by setting the scenes in classrooms and corridors and tried to set the scenes against a background colour that would show the mood. E.g. red background at the end on the trailer show confrontation and anger, but also love which goes with the main

plot of the trailer.

Shot types: the average soap uses mainly medium close up and panning shots to show the face expressions of the characters. In my trailer most of my shot types are medium close up or close up.

Editing: whilst editing the trailer I needed to keep a sense of realism so that the audience could relate to

the soap.

Costumes: when making the trailer we had to consider how we wanted the characters to dress as this would be the way the audience would stereotype the characters instantly and depend on there role in the soap. The main character we had to ensure didn’t fit in with the typical students was Chris to do this we made sure he was dressed more formal and smart to show his role of a teacher.

Parallel narratives: the soap trailer is shown from different points of view of all the characters, mainly the two main character (Jess, Chris) and tries to portray there feeling to the audience.

For my television soap trailer we have used ‘BlogSpot’ to create a blog on which I have uploaded all my planning and final products to. I have also compared soap trailer from existing soaps to my final trailer. My blog includes:•Billboard•Final soap trailer•Magazine front cover•Preliminary task•Other existing soap trailer

The music I have used as the backing track for my trailer is Rihanna feat Eminem love the way you lie (part two) I have chosen this song as I think it goes with the theme of the soap as it is about a couple lying, its a fast paced song which fits in with the actions of the characters. My target audience can also relate to it as it is a recent song by popular artists and will draw there attention to watch the soap.

Hollyoaks Shearwater Road

Existing media productLocation: Liverpool , this scene is in a classroom in an existing school.

HollyoaksMedium close up shots in classroom students walking in.

Original media productLocation: Aquinas college

Shearwater HighTwo shot, close up tracking shot in classroom students working.

Similarities: Hollyoaks, Shearwater road

Supervision in the existing media the subjects are facing away from the camera never giving it eye contact a main point to show it is a soap rather than a documentary, also showing a sign of secrecy. In the original media both subject have there heads down, showing no sign of interaction with the audience everything has hidden meaning and is kept very secret.

SimilaritiesBoth set in a class room with poster boards in the background to create mise en scene. Both using a natural light, allowing the soap to appear dull and morbid. Also uses the same amount of space around the subjects. Both are clearly showing what is happening with there gestures

Differences

Page 10: Media eva

Similarities: EditingBoth clips are cut to show the change of

shot, and movement from the road to the house/ van.

Original media product: Shearwater road Existing media: The HillsSimilarities

Vehicle driving past to show

establishing shot Similarities: Mise en scene•Both use a natural outside light• create realism and show the time of day that the event takes place•Both mid day

SubversionThe shot type differs between the twoOriginal media• wide shot can see the whole of the front door and most of the vehicle.Existing media•Close shot only captures half of the car and the back of the lorry.

DifferencesThe locality is obviously different as one is a brighter setting than the other, the existing product is set on a road or drive where as the original media is set outside a doorway.

Page 11: Media eva

DifferencesShearwater roadSound: sound track – love the way you lie (part 2)The HillsSound: voice over, with a fast backing track Shearwater road uses a spot light effect on the image whereas The Hills uses natural light.

DifferencesShearwater road: close up (can only see part of the building)The HillsWide shot can see the hole of the outside of the building

Simiaralities Both images clearly portray a building of where a scene/ scenes will take place. Both are the starting images for the trailers to show one of the places the soap is set. Both have people in the shot however small.

Q2. How effective is the combination of your main product and the

ancillary questions?

Page 13: Media eva

How did you create the following through your main and ancillary texts?

Bus stop billboard Magazine front cover

I have used a running colour scheme of bright red which is the main colour for BBC one and makes the products easily recognisable. It is seen in the back ground of both ancillary texts.

I tried to carry on the same font as BBC one, and have stuck with white text for my billboard so that the audience can relate instantly with BBC one.

Page 14: Media eva

How did you create the following through your main and ancillary texts?

Synergy- both use black and white in there colour schemes, with a brighter colour background.Shearwater road colours match the BBC one logo.

ImageBoth in smart uniform to portray a teacher, with colourful background to show a classroom with matches with BBC ones look.

Institutions : Same text used as bbc.Bbc one website

Page 15: Media eva

Colours:Main colour for BBC one is deep red and white. And it is used in all there trailers, for brand recognition. The font the BBC uses is bold, matches with the ‘Century Gothic’ font i have used. The BBC also uses circles often in there adverts as shown below.

Institution

The logo is to identify the institutionI have chosen BBC one as my institution.

• The soap will fit well with this channel as similar soaps such as East enders and Waterloo road are aired on this channel.• The time slot 8-9 will fit well on this channel as this is around the time when the other similar soaps are aired

LOGO>It is easily recognisable on ancillary products.Making it indefinable can instantly connect

a) How did you create the following through your main ancillary texts?

The image I used for my magazine cover was staged against a red wall of the main ‘characters’ in the trailer. For the billboard I used a text photo, this worked well as it looked like a piece of work something a student would produce and relate to.The soap trailer is informal and I used a relevant recent backing track the students (type of people to watch the soap) can relate to it. The language used is relative to the audience in a way they would communicate with each other e.g. ‘OMG’

LocationsMode of Address

Our locations changed between a college and a house, Aquinas and Shearwater road. We tried to vary the shots with diagetic sound in to be a mixture of the two.

Music The music track I used was one my target audience would like, by Rihanna and Eminem – Love the way you lie (part 2). I used this track as I though the lyrics went with the moral of the trailer ‘I love the way you lie’ (jess lying to her friends about seeing Chris)

Q4. How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and

evaluation stages?

Page 26: Media eva

Construction

Whilst constructing my trailer I used adobe premier elements, I dragged clips filmed into the time line at the bottom to create the trailer I clipped and adjusted the volume (yellow line shown below) and imbedded a soundtrack. I was also able to decide how long my clip would be by clipping the part that wasn’t needed.

Side bar on adobe with the clips recorded

Page 27: Media eva

Construction

Transitions in adobe

I used different transitions for my trailer but mainly used ‘Cross dissolve’ to make clips fit together.

•During making the trailer me and my team learnt how to use a video camera and tri pod sufficiently, in order to get the best angles and shots for the soap this made the soap seem more realistic and better to watch.

•I also learnt to use adobe premier elements and the different transitions and effects it had. I also leant how to crop clips and insert music to my trailer whilst making my preminalary task , this gave me a good experience before making my soap trailer give me a better confidence to experiment with my trailer (shearwater road)

Page 28: Media eva

For my ancillary's I used Microsoft Publisher to create my Billboard and magazine front cover.

I have used Publisher a lot in the past so didn’t have any issue when making my products which made it quick and easy to do.

Page 29: Media eva

Research

Similar products

There was allot of research that took place before making the trailer. We looked at existing soap magazine before making our own, I based my magazine on the existing magazine TV More.

From soaps like Waterloo road, Eastenders and Hollyoaks on the internet using BBC iplayer..

I also looked at several existing soap trailers on YouTube

Page 30: Media eva

Research Soap prelimany task

Before we made our final trailer we acted and filmed a scene from an existing soap (eastenders) using a script from a previous episode.

For this task I worked with the same group as I have for my final task, doing this helped us see who was best at what e.g. filming and setting up the camera etc. I also gained confidence using adobe premiere elements before making my final soap trailer

Blog

Here I could post my project onto my blog and write and evaluation to go with it.

To make your blog more personal you would press the ‘design’ button to change your background colours etc.

Here I could upload from YouTube , videos that I wanted to include in my blog. Using the embed button at the bottom of the video on YouTube and copying the hyperlink to BlogSpot.

Page 32: Media eva

Evaluation

The evaluation (this PowerPoint) has enabled me to create a more interesting evaluation, compared to an average evaluation that would normally be in the form of a essay. Even though presenting my evaluation this way involved allot more time, as it involved more media e.g. Print screens.

I also used Photoshop, Microsoft word, Microsoft publisher whilst creating my trailer

I colour co-ordinated my evaluation to make it easier to use and added a hyper link for each question to make it quicker to use.
