The medium your message is sent
through can make all the difference.
In fact, the very medium you
choose says a lot about the message
you send.
We gave participants this
scenario:
You just received a text message from
someone you think is cute. The text asked “What are you doing
tonight?”
How they would respond:
What if you got an email from the same person asking, “What
are you doing tonight?”
So obviously an email means something
different than a text. Let’s hear some commentary
about that
Let’s change the subject matter a little and see if
anything changes.
You just received an email from someone in class. The email said, “Can you help me on
this assignment?”
Now how about a text that said, “Can you help
me on this assignment?”
Now let’s get rid of technology…(Gasp!) What if those same
conversations occurred in-person?
So let’s sum things up!
The media we asked about:
Text messageEmail
In-Person
Emails are perceived as formal and professional
Texts are perceived as casual and personal
And in-person communication is
considered the best way to convey your
message.
So the next time you go to send an important
message…
Take some time to think about which medium
would be most appropriate for your
subject…
Because the medium itself conveys a
message!
