Preface

The International Congress of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, held inAdelaide, Australia in 2008 was the twenty-second ICTAM. The idea of hold-ing regular congresses devoted to the field of mechanics can be traced backto a conference on problems of fluid mechanics, held in Innsbruck, in 1922,and organized by four of the founding fathers of modern fluid dynamics,C.W. Oseen, T. Levi-Civita, T. von Karman, and L. Prandtl. Although itattracted only thirty people, this conference provided the spark that led tothe first ICTAM held in Delft in 1924 and organised by J.M. Burgers andC.B. Biezeno. This conference was so fruitful that the organisers decided toarrange similar meetings in the future, every four years, and to extend thescope of the future meetings to include solid mechanics.

The organisation of successive congresses was placed in the hands of aCongress Committee. During the sixth congress, held in Paris, the idea aroseof a more permanent organization to look out for the world interests in themechanical sciences. Thus IUTAM, the International Union of Theoreticaland Applied Mechanics, was formed on 26 September 1946. In 1947, IUTAMbecame a member of ICSU, the International Council of Scientific Unions,itself founded in 1931. The highest authority of IUTAM is the General As-sembly, with delegates from the Adhering Organizations, each of which isaffiliated with a national learned society or academy in a given country.

Contemporary mechanics incorporates fundamental problems from purescience and has strong links into modern technology. It pervades many areasof scientific endeavour, including oceanography, physical chemistry, biology,medicine, geophysics and astrophysics. The International Congress of Theo-retical and Applied Mechanics continues to spread the ever-expanding poolof knowledge in the mechanical sciences and continues to contribute to theadvancement of mutual human understanding.

The 22nd International Congress of Theoretical and Applied Mechanicscomes to Adelaide, Australia at the invitation of the Australian Academyof Science, in conjunction with the University of Adelaide and the FlindersUniversity of South Australia. The journey that was ICTAM2008, the first

IUTAM Congress to be held in the Southern Hemisphere, began in the middleof 2001 when discussions within the Australian and New Zealand mechanicscommunities explored the feasibility of putting forward a bid to IUTAM tohost the 2008 International Congress of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics.The bid, which proved successful, was greatly facilitated by the support of thethe Adelaide Convention Bureau and the support of many local and nationalorganisations. This volume is the culmination of that journey and presentsselection papers from the sectional lectures as well as details of all paperspresented during the congress.

The scientific program consisted of plenary opening and closing lectures,sectional lectures, prize lectures, mini-symposia, and contributed papers pre-sented in lecture and seminar presentation sessions. These cover all aspectsof mechanics. It also showcased the research of the inaugural winners of theBatchelor Prize in Fluid Mechanics Howard Stone and the Rodney Hill Prizein Solid Mechanics Ortiz.

All contributed papers presented at the Congress were peer reviewed. Rec-ommendations were received from Pre-selection Committees of the NationalCommittees of nine countries: Canada, France, Germany, Japan, China,Poland, Russia, UK and USA. Moreover, recommendations were receivedfrom the Chairs of the Mini-Symposia and of the Pre-nominated Sessions.Finally, the International Papers Committee (IPC) reviewed each short pa-per, paying careful attention to the recommendations of the pre-selectioncommittees. Accordingly, of the 1517 eligible submissions only 1322 contri-butions were invited by the IPC to be presented at the Congress.

As with all large congresses the work behind the scenes, although vitalfor the smooth running of the conference, goes largely unheralded. In thecase of ICTAM2008 much of this work was accomplished by Dr. Matt Finnwho wrote all the support packages, including the website and the schedulingsoftware, and introduced many innovations that have now become commonat major international meetings.

Finally, it is with sadness that I thank and acknowledge the Congress Pres-ident, Ernie Tuck who passed away in March 2009. This volume is dedicatedto his memory.

Congress Statistics

All contributed papers were peer reviewed. Recommendations had been re-ceived from Pre-selection Committees of the National Committees of the ninecountries: Canada, France, Germany, Japan, PR China, Poland, Russia, UKand USA. Moreover, recommendations had been received from the Chairs ofthe Mini-Symposia and of the Pre-nominated Sessions. Finally, the Interna-tional Papers Committee paid careful attention to the above recommenda-tions. Accordingly, of the 1517 eligible submissions 1323 (87%) contributionswere invited by the IPC for presentation at the Congress. Finally 901 con-tributed papers and 39 invited talks were given in Adelaide.

Fluid Mechanics was a subject of 550 presentations, Solid Mechanics wasselected as a subject of 611 presentations, and 112 contributions aimed tocover problems involving both areas of mechanics and education in mechanics.The total number of participants, accepted papers and presentations for thepast six congresses are shown in table 1. Despite the tyranny of distance oftenfelt in Australasia attendance at ICTAM2008 was comparable to these mostrecent congresses. Table 2 displays country statistics of the presentations andtable 3 details the number of presentations, both lecture and seminar, in eachof the designated sessions at ICTAM2008.

The following pages provide details of the content of the scientific program ofthe Congress.
