NOVEMBER 2013 PAGE 1 MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT The leaves are turning, the weather’s ge2ng chilly, so it must be 8me for thinking about plans for the upcoming year. What will you do differently? What will you do more of? This always feels like an exci8ng 8me to me, planning and then ge2ng ready to implement the plans. What are some of your strategies for reaching out to your sphere, to new clients, and of course, more referrals? This is also the 8me that we at the Chapter are planning for next year, and filling our CommiDees, a wonderful way to increase your professional face 8me with other serious full 8me professionals, and build those referral networks across the State. Perhaps a great referral source for the upcoming years! We’ve had an amazing 2013 so far. Just in October we’ve had our First Annual Bras for a Cause. Enjoy the pictures plus the 2014 Calendars, (yes, Calendars!) will go on sale shortly, and only for a brief 8me – don’t delay if you want one! And a terrific CRS one day class, presented by Leroy Houser, No Bull Selling, giving us lots of good ideas to implement right away, ramping up for 2014. Wrap up the year and join us for the MD DC CRS Installa8on luncheon. It will be my 2nd year as chapter president so I look forward to seeing familiar faces and mee8ng new faces. I hope you will par8cipate in the silent auc8on held during the luncheon that benefits Chapter With A Heart. We have quite a lot planned out already for next year, CRS classes, CE credits with our luncheons, great venues, a Top Producer Panel, the Luxury Home Tour in OC again, the Second Annual Bras for a Cause, and much more! To$start$with,$JK$always$recommend$that$your$clients$receive$three$inchome$es8mates$for$their$move,$to$help$create$an$accurate$budget$and$to$help$them$select$a$legi8mate$mover.$As$your$clients$are$receiving$these$inchome$es8mates,$we$offer$these$8ps$so$they$can$spot$the$warning$signs$and$protect$themselves$from$rogue$movers.$$If$a$poten8al$mover$exhibits$these$signs,$we$suggest$your$client$thank$them$for$their$8me$and$immediately$remove$them$from$considera8on.$

1.$The(mover(is(hesitant(for(your(client(to(visit(their(

facility.(Clean,$wellcmaintained$facili8es$are$cri8cal$when$pu2ng$household$goods$into$storage.$$It’s$also$a$considera8on$when$moving.$$A$mover’s$home$base$is$where$the$trucks,$dollies,$blankets,$and$packing$materials$are$housed.$Pests,$mold,$debris,$and$moisture$are$serious$concerns$when$it$comes$to$wrapping,$packing,$and$transpor8ng$your$belongings.$A$moving$company$that$promises$good$service$will$welcome$you$to$visit$their$facility$during$business$hours,$with$or$without$an$appointment,$and$we$recommend$that$your$clients$do$just$that.$

2.$The(mover(can’t(put(your(client(in(touch(with(

credible(references.(Simply$put,$you$want$your$client$to$be$moved$by$experienced$professionals$with$many$happy$customers.$The$best$moving$companies$understand$this,$and$will$be$eager$to$provide$several$prior$customers$as$references.$If$the$mover$won’t$deliver$references,$that$alone$is$reason$for$concern.$

their(Motor(Carrier((MC)(number.(Residen8al$moving$companies$are$authorized$to$operate$by$the$Federal$Motor$Carrier$Safety$Administra8on$(part$of$the$U.S.$Department$of$Transporta8on),$and$are$issued$an$iden8fica8on$number$to$verify$their$good$standing.$Your$client$should$check$the$website$of$each$mover$they$are$considering,$to$ensure$their$MC$number$is$displayed.$If$possible,$your$client$should$ask$to$see$some$of$the$mover’s$trucks$when$they$visit$their$facility.$$Rogue$movers$may$use$rental$trucks,$so$seeing$trucks$with$the$company’s$logo$and$the$MC$number$clearly$displayed$is$one$sign$of$a$legi8mate$business.$

4.$Use(of(inappropriate(esFmaFng(methods.(While$es8mates$can$vary$in$terms$and$condi8ons,$there$are$baseline$standards$regarding$the$methods$used$to$calculate$the$total$cost.$If$your$client$is$moving$from$one$state$to$another,$or$a$significant$distance$within$the$same$state,$the$price$should$be$based$on$the$weight$of$the$shipment.$Local$moves$are$typically$based$on$8me$and$materials.$Clients$should$be$especially$wary$of$any$mover$offering$an$es8mate$based$on$units$of$volume,$such$as$cubic$feet,$as$this$is$not$allowed$by$federal$regula8ons.$

5.$Your(client(isn’t(provided(with(“Your(Rights(and(ResponsibiliFes(When(You(Move.”(When$booking$a$move,$a$moving$company$is$required$by$law$to$provide$to$you$a$resource$published$by$the$U.S.$Department$of$Transporta8on$en8tled,$Your%Rights%and%Responsibili3es%When%You%Move.$This$can$be$given$to$your$client$as$a$booklet$or$a$hyperlink.$$It$outlines$what$is$required$of$a$moving$company,$how$consumers$can$protect$themselves,$and$what$the$customer’s$obliga8ons$are.$If$a$mover$fails$to$provide$your$client$with$this$resource,$they$are$commi2ng$an$unlawful$act$and$withholding$useful$informa8on.$

You$did$it!!!$$You$found$them$the$perfect$house$in$the$perfect$neighborhood...but,$oh$no!$$It$doesn't$have$a$fireplace!$$Your$buyers$are$imagining$the$cozy$glow,$warmth,$and$invi8ng$beauty$of$their$own$fireplace$during$the$howling$winds$of$Winter.$$(I'm$sorry,$you$know$it's$coming!!!)$$They$can't$make$it$a$weekend$project$to$just$add$a$wood$burning$fireplace$like$Grandma$had$c$tradi8onal$wood$burning$fireplaces$require$specialized$masonry$construc8on,$a$fair$amount$of$space,$and$owen$addi8onal$structural$support$due$to$the$heavy$weight$of$materials$used.$What$about$one$of$these$ideas?$For$new$construc8on$or$remodels,$homeowners$can$consider$the$alterna8ve$of$zerocclearance$fireplaces,$which$are$available$in$wood$burning,$gas,$or$even$pellet$burning$versions.

Zerocclearance$fireplaces$that$burn$fuel$(as$opposed$to$electric$models)$require$special$ven8la8on$systems$for$safe$and$efficient$opera8on.$However,$these$fireplaces$can$be$installed$almost$anywhere$in$the$home.$Unlike$tradi8onal$masonry$fireplaces,$zerocclearance$fireplaces$can$be$located$very$close$to$exis8ng$walls.$The$exteriors$of$these$units$do$not$get$hot$enough$to$ignite$nearby$combus8ble$materials$like$walls$or$floors,$so$a$brick$or$masonry$hearth$or$firebox$isn't$needed.$This$flexibility$of$placement$means$a$master$bedroom,$den,$or$even$a$kitchen$can$take$on$a$newly$invi8ng$atmosphere$with$the$addi8on$of$a$fireplace.$Available$in$many$different$sizes$and$styles,$zerocclearance$fireplaces$can$be$customized$awer$
