Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War to honor Maj. General James B.
McPherson on the 150thAnniversary of his death at the Battle of Atlanta
Tuesday, July 22, McPherson Square
Washington, DC: On Tuesday, July 22, the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War
(SUVCW), partnering with the Military Order of the Loyal Legion (MOLLUS), will
honor Maj. General James B. McPherson on the 150th
anniversary of his death
during the Battle of Atlanta. The ceremony will take place at 12:30 pm at the
base of General McPhersons monument at McPherson Square in Washington,
DC.
Organizer Tim McCoy, a member of the James A. Garfield Camp, SUVCW, who
came up with idea a few months ago, explains his motivation for planning the
ceremony: I walk past McPhersons statue nearly every day on my way to and
from work. When I learned earlier this year that no commemoration was planned,
I knew I wanted to do something so that the 150th
anniversary of his battlefield
death would not pass by unnoticed. McPherson is an American hero who made
the ultimate sacrifice for his country. It is only right to honor him, and hopefullyin doing so others who walk past that statue daily will know a little more about
the kind of man he was. McPherson, who was killed in the Battle of Atlanta on
July 22, 1864, was the second highest ranking United States Army officer killed
during the Civil War. He was a protg of General U.S. Grant and was highly
thought of by officers in both the north and south (additional biographical
