The Basics The Oklahoma State football team (1-0; 0-0 Big 12) opens the home portion of its schedule on Satur-day, Sept. 7, as the Cowboys host McNeese at 6 p.m. at Boone Pickens Stadium. OSU has won 23 consecutive home openers for the longest such streak in school history. Oklahoma State's all-time record in home openers is 84-28-5. The Cowboys have won 43 of their past 49 home openers, and have outscored opponents, 708-206, in home openers during the Mike Gundy era for an average score of 51-15.

In the Rankings Oklahoma State is receiving votes in both the Associated Press Poll and the Amway USA Today Coaches Poll. Although the Cowboys are not ranked, they have reached the top 15 of the AP poll at some point in 10 of the past 11 seasons. OSU has also seen a top 10 ranking in the AP poll at some point in eight of the past 11 seasons. McNeese is receiving votes in the FCS polls.

The Series Saturday's game marks the first meeting between Oklahoma State and McNeese. Although the Cow-boys have never faced the McNeese Cowboys, OSU has squared off several times with schools who are currently in the FCS Southland Conference, holding a 5-0 record. Mike Gundy holds a 4-0 career record against schools in the Southland Conference and an 11-0 record against school in the FCS. Under Gundy, OSU's average score against FCS teams is 50-9. Saturday's game will mark the second career game as a head coach for McNeese's Sterlin Gilbert and the first time he has faced an FBS opponent. It is the first meeting with an FBS opponent for McNeese since last season's game at BYU on Sept. 22.

Oklahoma State From a Distance Oklahoma State is coming off a season-opening win at Oregon State, setting a school record for points scored in a season opener on the road with a 52-36 win in Corvallis, Oregon. Freshman quarterback Spencer Sanders got his first career start and made the most of it. He finished 19-for-24 passing (79.2%) for 203 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions for a 191.5 efficiency rating. He added 109 rushing yards on 13 carries (8.4 yards per carry). His performance against the Bea-vers ranked No. 7 nationally in week one according to the ESPN QBR metric. Running back Chuba Hubbard and wide receiver Tylan Wallace also starred in their return to the field. Hubbard set a career high with 221 rushing yards and leads the FBS in rushing yards after one week. Wal-lace finished with 92 receiving yards and two touchdowns to mark his third multi-touchdown game in the last five games. Defensively, the Cowboys started six first-time starters last week, as well as six underclassmen. The Cowboys were led in tackles by first-time starter Amen Ogbongbemiga, who also logged a sack.

Team and Player NotesWin Indicators There are many things that factor into whether a team wins a game or not, but a long-term look at the trends during Mike Gundy’s tenure at Oklahoma State shows that winning the turnover battle and win-ning the run game are two of the easiest ways to predict an OSU victory. Since 2005, when the Cowboys win the turnover battle, they are 67-8 (89.5 pct.). They are 35-2 (94.6 pct.) in games when they commit zero turnovers. OSU is 92-21 under Gundy when outrushing the op-ponent (81.4 pct.) and is 39-5 when holding the opponent under 100 yards on the ground (88.6 pct.). History also shows that OSU is tough to beat when it takes a lead into halftime, as the Cowboys are 95-8 when leading at intermission under Gundy (92.2 pct.). Gundy-coached teams are also undefeated when holding opponents to fewer than 20 points, holding a perfect 56-0 record.

Cowboys in Close Games One of the best marks of a great program is finding a way to win when the game is close at the end. Under Mike Gundy, the Cowboys have excelled in that area. Dating back to the 2014 season, OSU is 18-6 in its last 24 games decided by less than 10 points, includ-ing a streak of three straight overtime wins and wins over No. 6 Texas and No. 7 West Virginia last season. That kind of consistency in pressure situations plays a large part in OSU's success. Going back to the beginning of the Gundy era, OSU is 34-23 in games decided by less than 10 points.

Game 2 Talking Points - Offense• Quarterback Spencer Sanders excelled in his first collegiate action last week, going 19-for-24 pass-

ing (79.2%) for 203 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions for a 191.5 efficiency rating. He added 109 rushing yards on 13 carries (8.4 yards per carry).

• Sanders earned a 93.5 total QBR rating from ESPN, a mark that ranked seventh in the FBS in week one. He is the only freshman ranked in the top 15. He also ranks among the Big 12's best in pass efficiency and completion percentage, and ranks No. 4 among freshmen nationally in total offense.

• Chuba Hubbard finished with a career-high 221 rushing yards against Oregon State and leads the na-tion in rushing yards and all-purpose yards after one week. He has crossed 100 yards rushing in four of his past five games. He also averaged 8.5 yards per carry.

• 2018 All-American and Biletnikoff Award finalist Tylan Wallace picked up where he left off, scoring twice and adding 92 receiving yards. He had five receptions in last week's win and four of them went for a first down or a touchdown. He has multiple receiving touchdowns in four of his past five games.

• Oklahoma State offensive coordinator Sean Gleeson is in his debut season on the FBS level after spending the previous two seasons as a successful offensive coordinator at Princeton. Offensive line coach Charlie Dickey, a 32-year coaching veteran who previously served as the offensive line coach under Bill Snyder at Kansas State from 2009-18, is also in his Cowboy debut season with OSU.

• The Cowboy offensive line is anchored in the middle by a combined 61 career starts from center Johnny Wilson and left guard Marcus Keyes. They lead a group that includes tackles Teven Jenkins and Dylan Galloway, who also have starting experience under their belt. Freshman Bryce Bray made his first career start last week.

Offensive Success Throughout Mike Gundy's tenure, OSU has been known for offensive success. Despite losing national award winners and having coaching changes and injuries, Gundy has found a way to put together elite offenses year in and year out, and the evidence is in the numbers. In the past nine seasons, Oklahoma State has finished among the top four nationally in total offense four times, including being ranked No. 2 nationally in 2017 and No. 10 nationally last season. Gundy's teams have finished among the top 16 nationally in total offense nine times during his 14 seasons as head coach.

Noting Tylan Wallace Oklahoma State's wide receiver Tylan Wallace has already taken the first legs of the journey to become OSU's next great wideout. As a sophomore last season, he went from a complete unknown to a Biletnikoff Award finalist. To get there, he turned in the second-best receiving total by an underclassmen in OSU his-tory with 1,491 yards. It was the fifth-highest total by any player in school history. Wallace led the nation with 63 catches of least 10 yards and tied for the national lead with 18 catches of least 25 yards. His 17.33 yards per reception average led the FBS among players with a minimum of 80 catches. Additionally, he finished last season ranked No. 2 in the FBS with 1,491 receiving yards, No. 2 in the FBS with 66 first-down catches and No. 3 in the FBS with 114.7 receiving yards per game. Wallace kicked off the 2019 season last week where he left off, catching five passes for 92 yards and two touchdowns.

Strong Out of the Gate Chuba Hubbard made big waves in the season opener last week and now leads the nation in rushing yards and all-purpose yards after week one. Also of note, his 221 rushing yards marked a career high and marked the most for any Cowboy since Justice Hill ran for 228 against Oklahoma in 2017. It was the sixth time in OSU history a Cowboy has rushed for at least 200 yards in a season opener and it was the first time it's happened since 2010. Just Getting Started: Chuba Hubbard Although Chuba Hubbard saw limited action most of last season behind All-Big 12 running back Jus-tice Hill, he did get to start the final four games of the season when Hill was held out due to injury. It was a small sample size, but Hubbard provided plenty of reason for optimism. Now with five games as the featured back, he has averaged 129.2 rushing yards per contest and 6.2 yards per carry:

Hubbard finished the season with nine total touchdowns to mark the most for a Cowboy freshman during the Mike Gundy era (2005-present) and the most for any OSU freshman since Donovan Woods scored 10 touchdowns in 2004.

Game Notes

Freshman Debut Quarterback Spencer Sanders had an impressive debut against Oregon State, earning a 93.5 total QBR rating from ESPN, a mark that ranked seventh in the FBS in week one. He is the only freshman ranked in the top 15. In his first career game action, Sanders finished 19 for 24 passing (79.2 pct.) for 203 yards with 3 touchdowns and no interceptions for a 191.5 efficiency rating. He added 109 rushing yards on 13 car-ries (8.4 yards per carry). His performance also pushed him to No. 2 in the Big 12 in pass efficiency and completion percentage, and he ranks No. 4 among freshmen nationally in total offense. Sanders' rushing total was the highest for an OSU quarterback since J.W. Walsh ran for 125 against Mis-sissippi State in 2013, and it was the most for a freshman quarterback since Tony Lindsay rushed for 126 yards against Colorado in 1997.

Game 2 Talking Points - Defense• The OSU defense was made up mostly of first-time starters in the season opener, as six Cowboys made

their first career starts. Additionally, six of OSU's starters were underclassmen.• The OSU defensive line featured first-time starters at every position at Oregon State last week in Brock

Martin, Brendon Evers, Cameron Murray and Tyler Lacy.• Several freshmen contributed on the defensive line in the season opener, including Lacy, Trace Ford,

Jayden Jernigan, and Samuela Tuihalamaka.• Junior linebacker Amen Ogbongbemiga also made his first career start and made a significant impact

as the was the team's leading tackler with a career-high 10. He also set a career high with a team-best 1.5 tackles for loss and had a sack.

• Sophomore safety Tre Sterling was the final first-time starter at Oregon State, and he tied for the second-most tackles on the team with nine, while adding a pass break up and quarterback hurry.

• The Cowboys provided pressure during last week's season opener, totaling eight quarterback hurries and batting away four balls at the line of scrimmage.

• Defensive coordinator Jim Knowles is in his second season as the leader of the Cowboy defense. The strengths of last year's unit were pressuring the quarterback and getting stops in the red zone.

• For the first time in the Mike Gundy era (since 2005), Oklahoma State features a pair of cornerbacks in their third year as starters. A.J. Green, a true senior, and Rodarius Williams, a redshirt junior, both came in the same recruiting class and have been everyday starters since the beginning of the 2017 season.

• One change on the depth chart for the 2019 season opener is the movement of Malcolm Rodriguez from safety to linebacker. The Oklahoma native started 10 games at safety last season and moved to linebacker leading up to the season opener of 2019.

• Safeties Kolby Harvell-Peel and Jarrick Bernard both showed promise last season, starting several games as true freshmen. They both stand to build on a strong start heading into their sophomore seasons in 2019.
