For their first field trip of the
school year, 18 McLoud G-T
sixth graders participated in a
very enjoyable and informa-
tional visit to Channel 9. The
group got an up-close look at
the Bob Mills Channel 9 Heli-
copter and its pilot Jim Gard-
ner, who demonstrated all the
weather equipment aboard.
Total value of the helicopter
is $3 million.
The group toured the news
room, sales division, make-up
and finance offices before
arriving at the highlight of the
trip: the broadcast studio.
After seeing Alex Cameron
and Mike Armstrong go
through make-up, their Tele-
prompters and camera angles,
the show went live.
At the conclusion of the
show, the McLoud group was
live on Channel 9 and then
had their picture made with
Alex and Mike.
An added bonus was an
impromptu visit with David
Payne, who arrived for work
just as the McLoud group was
leaving. He stopped and
posed for pictures with some
of the group.
My name is Shelly (Thomas) Den-
nis, and I am thrilled to have the
opportunity to teach in the town
that I grew up in. I am a 1989
graduate of McLoud High School,
a NSY graduate, and an ECU
graduate. Previously coming to
McLoud, I was employed at
Okemah Middle School. Most of
my 15 years there were served
as the school counselor. My
greatest joy comes from two
amazing daughters, Raegan who
is 7 and Jordyn who is 6. Both of
them attend McLoud Elementary
as well. It feels nice for the three
of us to “be home.”

Ms. Dennis & Mrs. Campbell Pod What a busy year we had so
far! Our classes have been
busy learning their Math Facts
and Decimal Usage in Math.
Science has been exciting as
well. We have been learning
about how we interact with
our ecosystem. In Social Stud-
ies, we learned all about the
European Settlements. We
studied and wrote about the
colonization of Jamestown,
the first permanent English
settlement in America. We
have been practicing our
“Friendly Letter” skills and
sentence development in Eng-
lish. The students have been
hard at work reading and try-
ing to reach their A.R.
(accelerated reader) and A.M.
(accelerated math) goals. The
students that met their A.R.
goals for the first six weeks,
were awarded an Ice Cream
party. It was a blast. Mr.
White said he really enjoyed
serving and eating ice cream
with the kids.
Picture day went off very
smoothly. The kids were all
dressed very nicely and ready
to strike a pose for the cam-
era.
We have all of our proce-
dures and drills down and have
settled into our routine. We
are looking forward to another
exciting month to come.

yard and miles, with a look at time and
weight. We are starting to classify the end of
September, and I am excited about some of
the upcoming lessons.
Spelling has us moving, especially
our hands, while refreshing our spelling
skills. We are looking forward to seeing you
at parent conferences.
In Social Studies, we started out
learning about the American landscape and
its resources. Now we are moving on to
learn about America’s colonial times.
It is great to have Mrs. Smiley back
at the Intermediate. She was truly missed
last year. This year, we have paired Mrs.
Smiley with another veteran teacher in Ms.
Anderson.
In math, we are busy refreshing our
math facts in addition, subtraction, multipli-
cation, and division, expanding our place
value skills and moving towards longer divi-
sion problems.
In science, we have been looking at
converting our measurements with ounces,
cups, pints, quarts and gallons, inches, feet,

In Language Arts, we started
out writing friendly letters to
our last year’s teacher and our
new principal, Mr. White,
while learning about subjects
and verbs. In Reading, we
began with the awesome book
Frindle, which we all enjoyed.
We are now beginning a new
book called Blood on the
River, which is all about the
settling of Jamestown.
The first nine weeks is almost over! It's gone by quickly. Our students have been making a fantastic effort to be at school every day; let's keep that momentum going! Mrs. Perry hit the road running; in Math she has reviewed place value, estimation, and order of operations. She is ready to dive into division. She’s been keepin it real in Science: last week the students candled an egg, broke it open, analyzed the different parts of the inside and learned how a chicken breathes inside it. The students are almost done reading Blood on the River in Mrs. Marsh’s class. They have been learning all about Jamestown and will be enjoying Pea’s Porridge this Friday to help bring the unit to an end. Next month we will be moving on to Colonial America. Reminder: Students continue to stay on track and are working hard at their jobs in the classroom. They are paying bills and keeping up with their check registers. We are very proud of our group! Earn that Marsh Money to figure out those Perry Finances!!!

The 2013 / 2014 school year is off
to a wonderful start. The students
in our pod have finished reading the
exciting novel, The Lightning Thief.
In Science, we have completed the
“process skills” and are excited to
begin classifying animals.
Social Studies kept us busy mapping
North America. Next week ,we
will begin looking at Common Core
Concepts for Social Studies.
In Math, we have finished the con-
cepts of order operation and multi-
plication/ division of decimals. We
have taken mastery tests over these
concepts. The students have done
fantastic. The students will need to
pass 19 tests to qualify for Mazzios
at the end of the year. Timed tests
for multiplication are currently
being taken; students are rewarded
a coke when they pass.
Please check the online gradebook
to keep track of your child’s pro-
gress. We want your student to be
at school every day unless they are
sick. Attendance is so important;
your child misses so much if they
are not in school.

school day by visiting one of the
exciting activities classes offered at
our school. The students will get
to attend classes ranging from P.E.,
Art, Music, Computers, Library,
Guidance, Basketball, and G.T. We
even offer Band for our sixth grade

class, we are hard at work! Eighteen of our stu-dents have already passed their first mastery test work-ing towards going to Mazzios in the Spring. Mrs. Voyles is excited about our new Social Stud-ies/Geography books. We are learning a lot of new and interesting facts about the
world we live in. Reminder, please keep up with your child’s assign-ments and grades with our online grade book. Also, remember that any assign-ment below a 70% can be corrected and turned back in for a better grade!
We are off and going! We are looking forward to seeing parents at parent/teacher conferences this week. In Mrs. Pendley's Lan-guage Arts class, we are close to finishing up Holes by Louis Sachar. Soon, we will be able to watch the movie to compare the two. In Mrs. Fixico's Math

they could not afford to buy their
own. The school was able to pur-
chase a team set of singlets for the
wrestlers to wear, but they could
only afford three sets of head gear.
The boys would have to share.
As the season went on, the coach
began to notice that all of the boys
had their own head gear. He noticed
that they were all different colors.
The coach regretfully asked one of
the boys where they had gotten their
head gear. The boy just smiled and
said, “You don’t really want to know
coach”. Coach thought he would
leave well enough alone. Later on in
the season, one of the wrestlers
overheard coach telling a friend, while
they were wrestling at a tournament
across town, that he wished they had
their own mats so they would be able
to host home duels. The mat they
were using to practice on was unfit to
hold a match on. The wrestler went
up to coach, with all sincerity, and
said, “Coach, if you can manage to get
the lights turned off in the gym for
about 15 minutes, I think we can get
I would like to start this article out
by telling everyone how excited I am
to be serving as the educational
leader of the McLoud Intermediate
Campus. I have been blessed with a
great bunch of teachers and staff to
work with.
A little about myself: I am a former
wrestling coach of 15 years. I was
the McLoud High School Wrestling
Coach from 2006 to 2012. I spent
last year as the high school principal
at Macomb High School. I returned
home this year to be the principal at
the Intermediate campus, as well as
the district transportation director.
When I think of starting new some-
where, I am reminded of a story a
buddy of mine once told me. He was
just starting a brand new wrestling
program at an inner city school. The
school was very poor and had very
few resources to start the program.
The team practiced on an old used
hand-me-down mat that was donated
to them from another school. Most
kids shared wrestling shoes, because
you that mat”.
Coach just smiled and said, “That’s
OK, we will manage”.
I am glad to say that I am not having
to start new, such as my friend once
was. We are blessed to have a great
school board and a very supportive
Superintendant here at McLoud. The
safety and education of our children is
of our highest concerns. When we
needed books so that every student
could have their own resource to
take home, the school board and
superintendant made sure we had
them. We have been updating our
school with I-Pads, Apple TV’s, and
projectors, so that we can keep up
with the Jones’s of the world. I have
not had to turn off the lights in order
to get anything, yet. Once again,
thanks for allowing me to serve as
principal of McLoud Intermediate.
