Introduction

The McKim (Leonora Jackson and W. Duncan McKim) Collection is divided into two separate parts.

The first part consists of the papers of Mrs. William Duncan (Leonora Jackson) McKim, relating toher career as a violinist and her personal life before and after her retirement and marriage. Mrs. McKimbegan donating material to the Library of Congress in 1928. Further gifts were made in 1941 and 1953. Ather death in 1969 she left much of the remainder of her estate to the library. The material includes writings,correspondence, photographs, manuscript and printed music (chiefly for violin and piano), and miscellaneousitems. A small number of documents and photographs was purchased from Linda M. Lesback and arrivedin March 1999.

The second part consists of material relating to the McKim Fund (Leonora Jackson and W. DuncanMcKim), established by Mrs. McKim's estate under the terms of her will. The fund is managed by the MusicDivision of the Library of Congress. Beginning in 1970 the fund has commissioned works for the violin andpiano and sponsored a series of concerts. This part of the collection includes scores for musical workscommissioned by the McKim Fund and programs from concerts underwritten by the McKim Fund. The fundcontinues to commission works, and the finding aid may not include the latest acquistions. The McKim Fundalso has purchased letters by persons prominent in the music world. These letters are also included as partof the McKim Fund Collection.

Biographical Note

Leonora Jackson was born in Boston in 1880. At an early age she showed a gift for music. Shestudied the violin and attracted the attention of Mrs. Grover Cleveland and George Vanderbilt. Theysponsored her training in Chicago, Paris, and Berlin. Among her teachers was Joseph Joachim. She made herdebut in 1896 and was awarded the Mendelssohn State Prize by the Prussian government in 1898.

Ms. Jackson was one of the first female concert violinists and was widely acclaimed. She performedfor royalty in Britain, Germany, and Sweden and was decorated by Queen Victoria. She was a soloist withleading European and American orchestras, including the London Philharmonic and the Boston Symphony.In her 1900-1901 season she gave 160 concerts throughout the United States.

In 1915 she married Dr. William Duncan McKim (1855-1935), a member of a wealthy Baltimoremerchant family. The McKims were patrons of the arts, holding musical programs in their home at 1701 18thSt., NW, Washington, DC. They also traveled extensively and amassed a large art collection.

After Dr. McKim's death she donated much of her art collection to the Smithsonian and the MarylandHistorical Society. Beginning in 1928, she began contributing material to the Library of Congress. At herdeath in 1969 she left the bulk of her estate to the Library.

The McKim Fund (Leonora Jackson and W. Duncan McKim) in the Library of Congress wasestablished in 1970 for the creation and appreciation of music for violin and piano. It commissions worksfor violin and piano. It also sponsors a series of concerts at the Library of Congress. Money from the fundhas also been used to purchase letters by prominent composers.

Scope and Content Note

The papers of Leonora Jackson McKim includes material relating both to her early life and careeras a concert violinist and her later life after her retirement and marriage. Unfortunately, the selection is spottyand there are major chronological gaps.

In the former category are clippings of reviews of her performances as well as programs, posters, andother publicity material. There are portraits of Miss Jackson and others prominent in the music world beforeWorld War I, such as portraits of Joseph Joachim and Arthur Nikisch. There are also photographs of otherwell-known persons, including Susan B. Anthony and President William Howard Taft. Correspondenceincludes invitations to the White House of President McKinley. There is also an extensive collection ofprinted music used by Miss Jackson in her performances. Some of this music has been cataloged individuallyand assigned shelf numbers. All the music, however, has been arranged as a single series. An appendix isprovided listing cataloged pieces by shelf number.

Holdings relating to Mrs. McKim's life after her marriage in 1915 contain a variety of materials.Correspondence includes letters by Albert Einstein and Edith Bolling (Mrs. Woodrow) Wilson. There arephotographs, including a number of the McKim home in Washington, DC. There is a certain amount ofmusic that Mrs. McKim acquired, some of it in manuscript form. An extensive collection of Mrs. McKim'swritings includes novels, short stories, plays, and poetry, all in manuscript format and seeminglyunpublished. There are paintings and drawings by Mrs. McKim.

The McKim Fund material consists chiefly of scores of compositions commissioned by the fund andthe programs of the concerts sponsored by the fund. The music scores consist of original manuscripts,photocopies of manuscripts, computer-generated scores, and commercially printed music. The programs,some autographed by the performers, cover McKim Fund performances since 1970. There are also lettersby composers purchased by the McKim Fund. The music and programs have been cataloged and haveassigned shelf numbers.
