Technical characteristics

Protection discrimination …Discrimination, also called selectivity, is the coordination of automaticprotection devices in such a manner that a fault appearing at a given pointin a network is cleared by the protection device installed immediatelyupstream of the fault, and by that device alone.

Discrimination is important in all installations for the comfort of users,however it is fundamental in installations requiring a high level of servicecontinuity, e.g. industrial manufacturing processes.

Cascading is a technique directly derived from current limiting. Circuitbreakers with breaking capacities less than the prospective short-circuitcurrent can be installed downstream from a current limiting circuit breakers.The breaking capacity is reinforced by the limiting capacity of the upstreamdevice.

It follows that substantial savings can be made on downstream switchgearand enclosures.

Merlin Gerin cascading tables are:■ drawn up on the basis of calculations (comparison between the energylimited by the upstream device and the maximum permissible thermal stressfor the downstream device),■ verified experimentally in accordance with IEC 60947-2 standard.

For distribution systems with 380 / 415 V, the following tables indicatecascading possibilities between upstream Multi 9 & Compact and downstreamMulti 9 circuit breakers.
