3. The Event:

The event began at 06:30 PM on Saturday, November 28, 2015. The event was a success

because the trainer was a well-renowned public speaker. His training session was not only

informative, but also entertaining. The guest speaker arrived at the venue sharp 06:00 PM and

was received by the protocol team and escorted to meet with Mr. Aseem M. Rizvi. The event

began on time. Opening speech was delivered by Syed Nabeel Zia, a student of Managerial

Communication class, and right after that he invited the guest to take over the stage and start the

workshop training session. Mr. Subhan Ahmed Mirchawala kept the attendees engaged at all

times with his daily life examples and active coordination with the participants. All the groups

worked together in order to make it a success. On the final day everyone was helping each other

regardless of which group was their responsibility. The real meaning of team work was seen on

that day due to which everything went smoothly despite of some minor issues in the beginning.

3.1 The Workshop Learning Experience:

Some of the points of the session that Mr. Subhan Mirchawala highlighted as are as below:

How should one react to change?

When should one react to change?

How do people react to change?

Communication process.

How to lead in the difficult time?

Kurt Lewin’s Theory of Change Management.

How to engage others to get the work done?

How to take your skill to the next level?

How to recognize and address your blind spots as a leader?

How to develop leadership skills?

One should take risk to his/her life to make a difference.

Advised students to read Harvard Business Review and The Economist.

Training Experience:

The training was very helpful as it demonstrated the reason why it is so difficult to bring about a

change in any organization. It helped us to understand how change must be brought without

resistance of people. Since people like familiarities and pattern, it is a very difficult task to get

them to adapt to new things as they have a fear of losing their power. Through this workshop,

we learnt that adapting change is an essential part of our life. If we resist change, we will not be

able to succeed in future. The entire workshop not only taught us how to avoid resistance from

people towards change, but also made us understand the importance of change in life. It also

taught us how to keep the attendees engaged in the workshop and not bore them. The workshop

was a success because we worked as a team despite having personal differences.

Communication is the only way to bring change and make it happen all over successfully.

Through communication, it will be easy for anybody to bring it. Kurt Lewin’s Theory of Change

Management description in the training session was helpful to understand the change

management process.

1. Unfreeze

2. Change

3. Refreeze

- First part is unfreeze in which you have to communicate why change is necessary, make

sure everybody knows about it and what is being changed. Make sure you deal with

people’s doubts and concerns.

Leadership and Change Management Page 13

- Next comes the change itself. This is where people get the idea that the things are going

to be different. Keep communicating how the change will benefit them all, so they all

continue to support it. Remember that, change does not come itself over night, so give

people time to adjust to it.

- The third part is refreeze. When your organization gets used to of the change and the

new culture. Make sure in the last step people get the support and training to stay on the

right track and check regularly that change has happened and people using the new

process and implementing it.

It is important to give them reward if they have been adjusted into the change and should

celebrate it to motivate others to get the part of it and as well it will help them to believe that

upcoming future change will be beneficial for them. Developing leadership skill is one of the

hardest tasks ever. One has to take the ownership of all the things and one thing to be

remembered that you cannot do all things by yourself. You have to take the risk in the difficult

circumstances.

Our teacher and all my classmates were praising Mr. Subhan Ahmed Mirchawala’s style of

delivering with simple examples from daily life that how a daily table tennis match can be an

interactive tool between employees and the management and what a role this interaction can play

in positive reinforcement of change in working environment. The concept of living in VUCA

World and how to deal with resistance for change would definitely help management students

like me to tailor our skills in the light of Kurt Lewin's Model of Change of Unfreeze, Move and

Refreeze for our upcoming professional interactions.

He specially recommended for the attendees to read Harvard Business Review articles, The

Economist and books like "Who Moved My Cheese."

Leadership and Change Management Page 14

4. Conclusion:

We as the whole class learnt a lot about the change management and how it will work in the

different situations of life. How one can deal with the resistance when change in any

organization occurs and how one can develop leadership skills by taking risk (when needed) in

his\her life.

Conducting a workshop was a great learning experience for me as a person and as part of the

event organizing team. It actually gave us the experience of working together as a team and

supporting each other. We learnt the importance of communication skills in the entire activity

since we had to communicate with a number of people/vendors with different mindset and the

importance of group work, for which we are thankful to Mr. Aseem M. Rizvi, who gave us this

opportunity. Despite of all the issues and commotion the event turned out to be as a success.
