India is a fast growing economy and has huge energy needs. We are the fourth largest oil consumer in the world and import over 80% of our crude oil requirement from the international market. Rising price of crude oil not only affects India’s economic growth but also poses great challenge for state owned oil companies to manage supplies as well as finances. The need to decrease dependence on oil for energy needs has been strongly felt, and domestic energy sources need to be tapped, for greater energy security. This requires new ideas, innovations and better engineering and project management skills. As an energy domain specific institute, RGIPT intends to produce engineers and managers who have the ability to think “out of box” to bring efficiency in oil exploration, production, processing and distribution. These graduates should have the capability to go beyond existing boundaries to look for solutions to India’s energy challenges.

Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology (RGIPT) was established by Ministry of Petroleum and Natural gas, Government of India in 2008 with the aim of developing a world class educational and training institute, catering to the needs of the energy sector. An additional mandate was to make it a center for research and development in oil and gas sector. Collaboration with industry and willingness of industry experts to share their time and experience with the students has given this institute the appropriate activation energy to produce graduates of international quality, who have high integrity and strong work ethics.

In order to achieve success in this endeavor, support from the industry is vital. Industry provides the platform where the ideas of these young graduates can be tested and implemented. Enterprises in the Oil and Gas Sector are key stakeholders in developing RGIPT as an institution of excellence. Their support has been commendable and is also necessary in the future.

Batches of B. Tech., M. Tech. and MBA, graduating in 2014 will soon be ready to enter the industry. We look forward to their absorption by oil and gas industry, and establishment of a long term mutually beneficial relationship between RGIPT and oil and gas enterprises.

Wishing the students of RGIPT a bright future.

Message from the PRESIDENT

“The task of a university is the creation of the future....” said Alfred North Whitehead.

The essence of an educational institution is aptly captured in the above saying. Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology (RGIPT) derives its core values from this spirit and envisions becoming a world class educational entity to serve as a fountainhead for nurturing ‘Petrocrats’.

The ever growing energy demand worldwide has triggered enormous growth in the E&P sector. Similarly, the downstream sector has become more competitive with the entry of private sector in both refining of crude and marketing of petroleum products. Globalization has changed the scenario of Indian petroleum world and many Indian oil and gas majors have intensified their overseas activities. This in turn has fuelled the demand of professionals armored with knowledge of latest technologies. The changing dynamics of the industry and the need to have a balanced energy mix necessitated the development of a specialized institution which can serve as a training ground for skilled professionals who will play a pivotal role in supplying the energy demand of the country.

RGIPT with its long list of reputed patrons is poised to provide professionals with right set of skills to industries. While brainstorming the type of model to be adopted, it emerged to develop the institute as a “Corporate University” to bridge academia-industry gap and also to achieve active participation of industry in its governance and development. In pursuing the tradition of excellence, RGIPT is ready with its 5th batch of MBA, which is well trained by experts to understand the dynamics of industry. I am confident that the students would utilize this opportunity for moulding their creativity and lay the foundation of a world-class lineage.

I take this opportunity to invite national and international companies for Post Graduate Placements. I am sure companies will find a unique pool of talent which is equipped with both industry specific knowledge & managerial skills.

D. M. ReddyPresident, RGIPT

Message from the DIRECTOR

I am pleased to introduce to you the Undergraduate and Postgraduate batch from RGIPT.

Our institute, conferred with the status of “Institute of National Importance” through an Act of the Parliament, has set very high standards for itself. The institute has the unique distinction of being nurtured by the Oil and Gas fraternity of India. This brings to our disposal a wide industry network to tap into. The primary objective of the faculty at RGIPT is to spawn a cadre of professionals with necessary skills to stand-up to the challenges in the various segments of the energy and chemical industry. To this end, members of the faculty are drawn from a pool of industry veterans and distinguished academicians.

At RGIPT, we believe in providing an environment where students can experiment with their ideas and learn from their own experience, thereby fostering creativity as well as rationality. Both Undergraduate and Post Graduate programmes have been designed with vital inputs from industry and are being continuously updated to meet the changing and challenging needs of the industry.

It’s been five years since RGIPT’s inception and this year saw the second batch of B. Tech. and fifth batch of MBA and M. Tech. stepping out of its hallowed portals. Reports by employers confirm that our alumni are excelling in their respective assignments and have carved out a niche for themselves. The class of 2014 is now ready to embark on their journey into the professional world. The current batch is a reservoir of energetic and motivated students who I believe would make substantial contributions to industry and hence to country’s growth. I am delighted to invite you to our campus for the Final Placements of 2014 batch of MBA.

RGIPT, bridging gap between Industry and Academia

Note of Gratitude

India is the fourth largest oil consumer in the world and imports about 80% of its oil needs from the international market. For a

long time a need was felt for an energy specific national level institute which can provide world class education, training and research and roll out efficient human resource to meet the growing requirement of the Petroleum and Energy Sector and ensure energy security and sustainability for India.

In this regard, massive discussion and study was carried out in India to visualize such an institution. After long deliberation and consultation with industry and academia, Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas, Government of India has set up the ‘Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology’ (RGIPT) in 2007 through an Act of Parliament along the lines of Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) and has been accorded the eminence of being an “Institute of National Importance”. The Parliamentary Act has also empowered the institute to award degrees in its own right like IITs. The uniqueness of this institute is that it is the first institute in India being promoted by leading Oil & Gas Companies of India, like Oil & Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC), Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL), Oil India Limited (OIL), GAIL (India) Limited, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) in association with Oil Industry Development Board (OIDB).

Since 2008 RGIPT has been offering Programmes like- MBA in Petroleum & Energy Management, B.Tech. in Petroleum Engineering, B. Tech. in Chemical Engineering, M. Tech. in Petroleum Engineering, and M. Tech. (Chemical Engineering). Ph. D. programme in Petroleum Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Renewable Energy, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Geology, Geophysics, Geo-Informatics, Management and English has been introduced from academic session 2012-13.

Keeping its status of an Institute of National Importance, RGIPT follows rigorous selection process for admission in all programmes. Admissions to B. Tech. programmes are made through IIT-JEE ranking whereas M. Tech. students are admitted through GATE followed by Screening Test and Personal Interview. MBA admission in Petroleum & Energy Management Programme is based on CAT/ GMAT/XAT followed by Group Discussion and Personal Interview of candidates by experts & professionals from Oil & Gas industry.

To ensure highest standards of education and training to the students, RGIPT has been following the IITs standard in the selection of faculty. Most of the faculty members have Ph. D. degrees from renowned universities of India like IITs, IIMs and foreign universities and have rich industry experience. Apart from regular faculty, RGIPT regularly invites industry experts for guest lectures to update the knowledge to keep the students abreast with the latest happenings in industry. We firmly believe that quality of students, their industrial exposure and training provided by our experienced faculty will definitely prove worthy in hydrocarbon industries. But, this journey to develop young leaders for energy industry could be continued with industry support only. Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology is open to collaborate with any esteemed organization for training and R&D work and is looking for suggestions and guidance to make it a world class educational institution.

Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology (RGIPT) has a unique distinction and is the first national

level institute being promoted by leading Oil & Gas Companies of India. Since the inception of the institute, our promoters have provided guidance to develop industry oriented curricula for Post Graduate & Under Graduate Programmes and shared knowledge, expertise and experience with students and faculty in the form of Guest Lecture, Industrial Visit and Summer Training to develop innovative managers for the energy industry. Also, their active participation in various activities of the institute shows their interest to develop world class institution focused on energy sector and it motivates us to develop such a platform where future leaders for Chemical, Petroleum and Petro-Chemical industries could be nurtured.

We extend our thanks to these leaders for their support for creating “Petrocrats” for energy industry and developing campus
