PRESIDENT & CEO MESSAGEThese protocols were equally embraced bythe MBA to keep our staff and students safethrough the pandemic. Through this period, the MBA provided great stability and serviceto our members. While we advocated tokeep the industry working, and then for theintroduction of economic stimulus, the MBAteam fielded thousands of enquiries frommembers and continued to provide highquality training to apprentices and the localindustry.

Our advocacy continued in the recentmonths when the ACT lockdown meant thebuilding and construction was shutdown formore than 3 weeks. The MBA worked closelywith the ACT Government to have ourindustry reopened ahead of many otherindustries. The MBA and MBA Group Trainingbenefited from Government supportthroughout the year which was used toretain our staff and provide continuedemployment for our apprentices.

TRAININGIt is impossible to report on the 2020-21 yearwithout acknowledging the profound impactthat the COVID-19 pandemic has had on theACT community, our industry and ourorganisation.

The 2020-21 reporting year begun as theACT was emerging from the first COVID-19lockdown. The pandemic recovery phasedemonstrated the benefits of our MBAfederation which was used to full effect toadvocate for significant economic stimulusfor the building and construction industryfrom the Federal and ACT Government’s.This stimulus meant the building andconstruction industry led the ACT’s economicrecovery due to the 3:1 multiplier impact ofinvestment in the construction industry.

The COVID-19 pandemic has demonstratedmany things to the ACT community, onebeing that our industry puts workplacesafety ahead of all other priorities. Ourindustry quickly embraced new safetyprotocols so that we could keep workingthrough 2020.

Adding to our training offering, this yearMBA Group Training (MBAGT) purchasedSouthern Training Organisation (STO). TheMBA ACT and STO have partnered for morethan 7 years to provide high risk training forthe construction industry in Canberra andBega. With MBAGT purchasing STO in June2021 we can now offer a greater range oftraining for our industry and build uponMBAGT’s reputation as a quality trainingpartner for our industry.

A feature of the 2020-21 year was the ACTelection held in October 2020. The MBA wasa strong advocate for our industry callingfor increased infrastructure spending, support for local businesses, increasedsupport for apprenticeships, and planningreform. Now that the election is completed,we are working cooperatively with officialsto ensure the interests of our members isconsidered when new policies areimplemented.

2021

Despite the headwinds of 2020, the MBA made anumber of investments which will help provide safertraining and improved member services, including:

Establishing MBA Legal, a fee-for-service law firm dedicated to providingaffordable legal advice to MBA members.Expansion of our apprentice training workshop to allow safer training spacesfor our students.Refurbishment of the MBA ground floor office, reception and classrooms.

The MBA also provided a greater range of member events, including a series ofevents focused on supporting women in the construction industry, and ACTGovernment funded pre-apprentice programs to attract more women into tradeand civil construction careers. Both programs have been extremely successful.

A highlight of the year was witnessing the generosity of our members, led byKane Constructions and supported by our partners, Ginninderry and HandsAcross Canberra, to start construction of the MBA’s next charity house project atStrathnairn. This house will be designed, built and sold by women to highlight thecapability and contribution of women in our industry.

While the duration and full impacts of the pandemic is uncertain, the MBAentered FY21 in a strong position. We start the new financial year with a strongbalance sheet, with a motivated team, ready to support our members andstudents through whatever challenges the new year brings.
