SUN SAFETY

Be sun safe and check the time!

Limit your time outdoors

between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. or

whenever the UV index is 3 or

more. Ultraviolet rays are the

sun’s invisible burning rays.

They can cause sunburn. The UV

index tells you how strong the

burning rays are.

If you are outside, play in the

shade! Wear clothing to protect

as much skin as possible! Wear

a wide brim hat! Be sun safe and

wear sunglasses! Too much sun

can damage your eyes. So,

protect your eyes and wear

sunglasses with UVA and UVB

Protection. Cloudy or sunny, the

sun’s harmful UV rays will find

you. Boost your protection by

wearing sunscreen.

So slip on a shirt, slop on some

sunscreen and slap on a hat!

Enjoy the outdoors! Just

remember to be sun safe!

Track and Field

Another Track & Field season wrapped up recently with lots of students participating in various running, jumping, and throwing events. The first meet saw 80 plus grades 2 to 8 Terry Fox athletes compete at beautiful Varsity Stadium. From there, qualifying athletes moved on to the North Conference Finals which took place at Esther Shiner stadium. Finally, on June 10 six students went on to the City Championships which saw the best of the best in all of TDSB compete. All six students (Kevin Luo, Nicholas Leong, Fiona Wang, Jing Lin, Leslie Huang, and Olivia Yip) placed in the top 8 in each of their events. Kevin (3rd in 100 metres), Fiona (3rd in Javelin), and Jing (1st in Javelin) even received medals for their performance that day. Jing's win marks the third straight year that the Grade 8 Boys Safety Javelin event was won by a Terry Fox athlete. Way to go! Mr. Chan

Cosmic Connections On May 5, 2014 the Grade6 students from Ms. Chu and Mr. Nikolarakos’ class had a special presentation in the library. Our speaker, Brian Cheaney, shared his knowledge about space and the solar system. In his Power Point presentation, Mr. Cheaney talked about the different planets, the stars, the difference between solar and lunar eclipse and our favourite topic, black holes. In the evening, he invited students, along with our parents to the Star Party. At the party, we learned the names of different constellations and how to spot it in the sky. On this special night, if we were lucky enough, if it was clear we would have been able to see a meteor shower. However, as usual Toronto was unfortunately cloudy, so we did not have a chance to see the meteor shower. Hopefully, next year students will have better luck.

The Grade 3's this year have worked very hard since

September to prepare for EQAO. They have learned a variety of

writing styles and have spent

countless hours mastering them. They problem solved daily in

math and worked in teams to ensure everyone always

understood the math concepts we learned. We are very proud

of them and couldn't be happier

with all of their hard work. Good job Grade 3's!

Eco-Family Night

On Thursday, April 24th, Terry Fox Public School hosted a fun filled Eco-Family Night. It was a huge success with over 90 families participating. That is about 300 people! During the evening, families rotated between 5 rooms where different eco-themed events took place. There rooms were:

1. Eco Arts and Crafts - students got creative making interesting art pieces out of recyclable materials. Students were also engaged in folding beautiful origami out of recyclable paper.

2. Eco Bingo – using pop can tabs as markers, students and their families tried to match the eco

symbols on their cards to the ones the EcoSchools student leaders displayed. Winners won popcorn in a compostable bag. Yummy!

3. Eco Board Games – our EcoSchools leaders spent a lot of time making board games out of

recyclable materials. And if you didn’t get a chance to play one of the games we made, the board game company WoodForSheep generously brought their games to provide a fun night of gaming that does not require electricity or staring at a computer screen!

4. Eco Literacy – thanks to The Home Depot for volunteering their time to educate families on

particular products that can make the house more eco-friendly. The kids could read eco-themed books while the parents listened!

5. Eco Active Games – in the gym, students got a chance to let off some energy while playing

some neat eco games made by our EcoSchools student leaders. There was Eco-bowling where we tried to knock down bad things in our environment, like pollution and litter. There was also Sort It the game that tests whether you know which items go in the garbage, compost and recycle bins!

While all this fun was happening in the classrooms, on the stage, our students were busy sorting clothes for our clothes drive in partnership with The Canadian Diabetes Association. For each bag of used clothing our school received, our school earned $2 towards building our school garden. The money the Canadian Diabetes Association makes by selling clothes all goes toward Diabetes research. Thank you to all our families for the generous clothes donations. At the end of the evening, we had our closing remarks in the gym and grand prize draws for eco-products that were generously donated from RONA, The Home Depot, and Toronto Public Health. Eco-Family Night was a huge success! Thanks for joining us! -EcoSchools Team

Eco Club – 2013-2014

The Eco Club isn’t just a regular club that meets every Tuesday after school. Starting from fall, 2013, students

from grades 4 through 8 joined Eco Club. This group of students is passionate about protecting the environment

and wanted to take part in all the activities the group organized this year. The students were divided into

separate groups, ranging from creating newsletter articles to writing announcements. Recycling is just a small

part of helping our environment. To be fully committed to our community takes dedication and teamwork, and

that’s what our Eco Club demonstrated. As you should all remember, there was an eco-challenge throughout the

school year. The classes competed against the other classes in their division to be the most eco-friendly. Each

class had the task of conserving light energy, closing the blinds at the end of the day, and putting waste in the

right bins. Every day, a /some student(s) would either colour a green box if they fulfilled their duty, a yellow if

they didn’t fully complete it, and a red if they did not manage to be successful. The Eco Club wanted to make

the rest of the school more aware of protecting the environment, so the teachers thought of organizing a night

where families can come to school and learn about the environment and how we can protect it. On April 24th,

the Eco Club organized a variety of events for Eco Family Night. During the Eco Night, we helped lead several

events that were valuable to our knowledge. For example, we had an event called, ‘Where Does It Go?’ which

taught families what went in the garbage, recycling and compost. We also had stations like Eco Bingo, and Eco

Arts and Crafts. There were raffles and prizes generously donated by Home Depot and Rona. We also had a

clothing drive where the bags of clothing were donated to the Canadian Diabetes Association, and for every bag

we filled, we received $2 for our school garden. Over 96 families attended Eco Family Night, making it a huge

success! At the end of the night, we filled a total of 81 bags, so our school raised $162! We have just started on

working on our school garden, which consists of many different kinds of plants. There are a total of 2 school

gardens: one in the kindergarten area where we will be growing flowers, and the other at the front entrance of

the school where we will be growing vegetables and herbs. We would like the thank Mr. Lowe for visiting us

every week to teach us how to garden. We can’t wait to see how the garden looks when everything blooms and

grows!

COOKING CLUB JOURNAL By: Willie Gao

Hi, my name is Willie. I am in cooking club, and I am going to tell you all about it. THE CONE SUSHI

Cooking club is awesome. I wish there were more weeks for cooking club, because we only 3 weeks. On the first day, at 11:30 in portable 1, we started by making “cone” sushi. First of all we had to listen to instructions before we started. The rolling part was very complicated. So I needed to get that instruction stuck in my brain before I started to make the sushi. We first had to get a type of seaweed called nori. The nori was very dry and salty, so we had to be very careful. The second part is we had to get some rice. The rice we were using was Japanese rice and Japanese rice is really sticky. We also added sushi vinegar for the rice before adding it to the surface of the seaweed. Then we went to Ms. Lau’s round table. There were cucumbers and imitation crab meat and many more. After putting on the main “flavor” ingredients, we added sauce. Then we started doing the most complicated part, which Ms. Bagli and Ms. Lau had to help us the most, called the rolling. After we were done we ate our sushi.

Page 7: May/June 2014 - Toronto District School Boardschoolweb.tdsb.on.ca/Portals/terryfoxps/docs/Newsletters/May June... · May/June 2014 With every new school year comes change…and 2014/2015

THE TUNA SANDWICHES AND THE EGG SANDWITCHES

After waiting one week, we finally had cooking club again. We made tuna sandwiches. It was actually pretty easy, because we get bread and put on the tuna. Then we put on the sauce mayonnaise. When we finished making the sandwiches, we ate them. The sandwiches were very tasty! We made egg sandwiches after eating the other sandwiches.

THE PANCAKES

This week is the last day of cooking club, which made me sad. But then we made pancakes! We had to use tons of ingredients, so I am not going to list them all! We mixed the ingredients and then we cooked the pancakes. Only Ms. Lau and Ms. Bagli could use the “baker.” We had to wait about 5 minutes then we could eat it. It tasted good! I think that cooking club will be a good club to learn how to cook!

Cooking Club Cooking club is amazing. This year, we made three simple, but delicious types of food. Sushi cones (or whatever you call them), sandwiches, and pancakes. I think it’s really fun and a good way to learn how to make food for when you’re older. First, we would come in and sit at the carpet to learn about what we will be making and how to make it. Then, we would usually watch the teacher make one. After that, we go to our desk and make the food. I think other people will enjoy cooking club because 1. You can learn something new. 2. Some activities we do in cooking club (counting ingredients, measuring items, etc.) can help you in some subjects. For example, counting is in math. 3. You can have fun, if you are usually bored outside, you can have something fun to do. I was really sad when we reached the last day because I had lots of fun and didn’t want it to end because it is only for grade four and I wanted to do it again. If you ever get an opportunity to join, you should. By Jennifer Shao

My Cooking Club Experience My most favourite part in Cooking Club was making the food, but mostly eating the food. I liked the Japanese handrolls because they tasted so good and is very fun to make. I would rate it 5 yummy stars! I also liked the egg and lettuce sandwich. I enjoyed mostly the buns of the sandwich. I would suggest slightly more sweet, but I still recommend it to others to try to see what they think! I would rate this 3 yummy stars! I had a great time in Cooking Club! I wish I can join again next year! By Sammi Ho

Scientist in Schools On June 4th, Scientist Lisa came to our class to bring us a Scientist in Schools workshop called “Battles in the Tropical Rainforest”. We split ourselves into five teams to explore the rainforest habitat. Scientist Lisa teleported us to five different tropical countries where we learned about some unique plants and animals. In Nigeria we watered a few plants and measured how much water they could absorb; In Costa Rica we used straws to build the tallest tree ever; In Thailand we made a bouncy rubber ball using some secret ingredients from a rubber tree; In Ecuador we learned about an unusual species of ants that eat everything near their home! Finally in Brazil we built a food web together. It was a fun afternoon and we learned that plants and animals need each other to survive in their habitat! Mr. Wan’s Grade 3/4 Class

Red Maple - Downtown Ceremony

Due to joining the Red Maple Reading Club, I received a great trip to the Red Maple Ceremony, located in

downtown. It was absolutely extravagant considering that one book would be receiving the Red Maple award.

When we first entered Harbourfront, there were tents everywhere. At the very end was a huge stadium where

the awards were held. When it was finally time we sat down. Each of the books were introduced along with the

authors. The book that received the award was "The Reluctant Journal of Henry K. Larsen" by Susin Nielson.

In conclusion, I was really happy since that's the book I voted for. The book was really in-depth about bullying. I

hope to have an experience like this in the future.

Young Women on the Move Excursion to Downtown

On Thursday June 12, 2014, a group of girls called The Young Women on the Move went Downtown to do

various activities to help improve our leadership and teamwork skills. We took the TTC to the Hockey Hall of

Fame. It was really fun and we even got to see the Stanley Cup! After taking millions of pictures, we walked to

the St. Lawrence Market to eat lunch. There were different types of food including Greek, Japanese, Chinese,

Italian and even a bakery. After eating lunch, the girls had time to explore the St. Lawrence Market and buy

things like souvenirs and cheese. There were crafts, clothing and furniture stores. Next, we went to Steps to take

a Salsa class. We had a great dance instructor, Jennifer, who was able to teach us her wonderful Salsa dancing

skills! After learning and practicing, we mastered the skills of salsa dancing (not really… but we tried.) she

even filmed us to show it to the other dance crew members. Then, when the dance classes were done, we bussed

home. The whole day was a lot of fun yet tiring! We hope we can do this again sometime next year!

Stitch club was so much fun! At first I thought, Oh. I'm not so sure....I don't know how to stitch.... But after a

few needle pokes and fun crafts, I regretted thinking that to myself. Stitch club is awesome! We made little

bags, sewed pictures and even made a stuffed animal! I'm really looking forward if Stitch club is hosted again!

Intermediate Quebec City Trip

This year from April 29th to May 2nd, the intermediates visited Quebec City. Our tour guide took us to

Upper and Lower Town in Quebec City and we learned about the history and culture. We enjoyed

many great activities such as the walk across the bridge over the Montmorency Falls, discovered many

interesting foods and shops, enjoyed a night of bowling and billiards, and had an exclusive student

dance. Overall, it was a really good trip!

Hair Donation Event - June 4th

We had our annual Hair Donation Event and this time 16 people in total donated their hair, ranging from Junior

Kindergarten to Grade 8, as well as teachers. It is amazing how something small in December 2009, has grown so

much. Again, Paul and Elaine Lo from Salon Passion donated their services to our special event. And this time the

hair was cut at their salon!

If you are thinking about donating your hair, you can talk to Ms. Woo, Ms. Ngu, or Mrs. Mitra. Information can also

be found online at Pantene Beautiful Lengths if you want to find out how to maintain your hair. If you also want to

donate your hair during the year, you can always get it cut and bring it to school, which many people have done in

the past. Students, parents, and friends of families in the community have dropped their hair to me and I always am

happy to receive them.

This year we raised a total of $2978.30. In total we have raised $15, 386.22. Thank you to the generous donations of

friends, families, and staff throughout the years. You are also helping to make a difference in many people's lives in

need.

We look forward to next year's event. If you are interested in joining us next June, listen to the announcements for

upcoming meetings.

Check out our photos!
