The 2016 presidential derby begins

The day before Election Day, the opposition United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) proclaimed

Vice President Jejomar “Jojo” Binay as its candidate for President in 2016. Now that’s what you call preemptory move against anyone who might be toying with the idea of running for president.

At UNA’s final rally – “miting de avance” – in Tondo, Manila, last May 10, Binay was introduced as “the next President of the Philippines.” The candidates took turns in addressing him as “President Binay.” For some reason, it seems that everybody in the opposition is jumping into Binay’s bandwagon

long before the 2016 presidential election began. Indeed, as UNA campaign manager Toby Tiangco said, “Binay is still the man to beat for the presidency in 2016.” If so, what’s Binay game plan?

In my article, “Unholy National Alliance” (April 18, 2012), I wrote: “And this brings to the fore the nagging question: Why did Binay form UNA while the impeachment trial was ongoing? He could have waited until July 2012 after a verdict [on Corona] would have been passed. With six of the senator-judges running for re-election in 2013, five of whom might end up on UNA’s ‘Magic 12’ senatorial line-up, the timing of the unification effort is riddled in suspicion. I think [former Senator

Ernesto] Maceda opened a can of worms when he said ‘a vote to acquit Corona is a vote of support for Binay in 2016.’ And I’m sure that P-Noy has the political savvy to decipher Binay’s game plan.

“But in Binay’s attempt to unify all the diverse political parties under his umbrella, he may be creating a political machine similar to the Lakas-Kampi-CMD (LKC) merger prior to the 2010 presidential elections.”

Spruce GooseFormer President Gloria

Macapagal Arroyo’s creation of the largest political party since the time of Ferdinand Marcos turned out to be like Howard Hughes’ “Spruce Goose.” On it’s maiden test flight on November 2, 1947 with Hughes piloting it himself, the humongous airplane flew for only a mile at 70 feet above the water. It’s mediocre performance forced Hughes to abandon the project.” And like the Spruce Goose, Gloria’s LKC broke apart by its sheer size. And like Gloria’s LKC, Binay’s UNA broke apart in the 2013 mid-term elections with only three of his candidates winning while nine Team PNoy candidates won.

The question is: Would UNA survive and become a viable opposition coalition in the 2016 elections? While it may be too early to tell, one thing is certain: it will not be the same as the one that participated in the 2013 mid-term elections. In 2016, there will be a new set of senatorial wannabes. But because of UNA’s anemic performance in the 2013 elections, these wannabes might gravitate around the Liberal Party (LP) hoping that P-Noy and the LP standard bearer – whoever he or she might be? -- would include them on the administration slate.

KingmakerMany believe that because

of P-Noy’s popularity, he’d have a strong hand in filling the LP’s 2016 senatorial slate – including the presidential and vice presidential candidates -- with his own “people.” The problem though is that he’d be a “lame duck” by then. However, if he earns tons of political capital and amasses invaluable goodwill with the people in the next three years of his presidency, his endorsement in 2016 might translate to a virtual “command vote.” If that were the case, he would become the ultimate kingmaker.

But P-Noy’s problem is that the Liberal Party is perceived as a weak party and doesn’t have star powers of its own. There are no heavyweights that the party could field against Binay. Mar Roxas is probably the only presidentiable from the LP’s ranks. But Roxas said that he was not interested in running for president in 2016. However, he might run if the LP could build a formidable organization capable of defeating the popular Binay. P-Noy’s personal charisma is the only one that can match Binay’s star power. Unfortunately, P-Noy can no longer run for office.

If Roxas were really firm in his decision not to seek the presidency, Sen. Francis “Chiz” Escudero could jump into the Liberal Party. Placing third behind Grace Poe and Sen. Loren Legarda in the just concluded mid-term elections, Chiz – who is an Independent – would be the LP’s best bet to field against Binay. He played his cards right when he stuck with the LP Coalition as a guest candidate and distanced himself from Binay’s UNA who had put him on their slate as a common candidate. But he was removed together with the two other common candidates, Grace Poe and

Loren Legarda, from the UNA slate when the three didn’t appear in UNA campaign rallies because Team PNoy forced them to abandon UNA.

Big surprise It is interesting to note that

from the start of the campaign season until Election Day, Loren held the Number One spot in all the surveys. But on Election Day, Grace Poe – who is Independent -- sprinted to the Number One spot and Loren slid down to Number Two spot while Chiz moved down to Number Three Spot from the second spot. What is intriguing is that the LP coalition’s guest candidates took the top three spots, two of who are Independents.

Surprisingly, of the three Liberals handpicked by P-Noy – Paolo Benigno “Bam” Aquino IV, Jamby Madrigal, and Ramon Magsaysay Jr. – only Bam Aquino, P-Noy’s cousin, won. A political neophyte with only his last name to his credit, Bam couldn’t have won on his own account. With that kind of performance at the polls, it makes one wonder if the LP could attract winnable candidates in 2016?

In the past several months, there were talks about a possible entry of Kris Aquino into politics. However, nobody could pinpoint what office she would be running for? Governor? Representative? Senator? How about Vice President? Heck, she paid more taxes than any of the Chinoy taipans last year. That would endear her to the poor masa. Indeed, a Mar-Kris or Chiz-Kris tandem might just do the trick to craft a Liberal Party victory over a Binay-Jinggoy tandem or “Binggoy.”

Battle royale Of the 12 senators whose terms

end in 2016, Juan Ponce Enrile is retiring and Miram Defensor Santiago might not run for reelection due to her pending appointment to the International Criminal Court while Bongbong is expected to run for president and Jinggoy Estrada is expected to run for vice president. That leaves eight probable reelectionists in 2016: three Liberals (Franklin Drilon, Teofisto Guingona III, and Ralph Recto); two Lakas (Lito Lapid and Bong Revilla); one Nacionalista (Pia Cayetano); one Nationalist People’s Coalition (Tito Sotto); and one Independent (Sergio Osmena). Except for the three Liberals, the other five reelectionists would most likely run as guest candidates of either the Liberal Party coalition or a Binay-led UNA.

It is very likely that Osmena and Sotto – who both have made praising post-election remarks about Binay -- would run under UNA while Cayetano could possibly run under Marcos’ Nacionalista Party or on the Liberal Party’s coalition slate. Lapid and Revilla – who are allies of Gloria -- would most likely run under Binay’s UNA or Marcos’ coalition as guest candidates.

How about the presidentiables? With Binay already declaring his intention to run for president and Roxas or Escudero running under the Liberal Party coalition and Marcos forming a third party, the 2016 presidential elections might turn out to be a battle royale among the country’s powerful dynasties.

But in politics, strange things happen. What if the Liberals and Nacionalistas joined forces in 2016 like they did in 2013? Can it be within the realms of probability – or absurdity -- for Bongbong Marcos and Kris Aquino to team up? Hmm…

Like they say, “Anything goes in politics.” Indeed.

Filipinos in Winnipeg hold a stronger front of East & Southeast Asian origin in the 2011 Census!

Census 2011 reveals that there are 58,535 Filipinos in Winnipeg' and an increase of 53% from the 2006 stats figure of 38,275. And to include other cities in Manitoba where Filipinos reside, the total number of the Filipino population skyrockets to more than 61,000 strong!

The 2011 Census also recorded the Chinese population increased by 22% from the 2006 record of 16,695 to the current 20,405, followed by the Korean, 27%, from 2,205 to 2,805; the Vietnamese chalked a record of 20% from 3,745 to 4,505 Vietnamese immigrants

In ranking, East and Southeast Asian origins in Winnipeg: Filipinos rank 1st; followed by Chinese; 3rd place belongs to the Vietnamese; Korean 4th, Japanese, 5th (2,055); Loatian, 6th (1,235); 7th Thai (430); 8th, Malaysian (310); Taiwanese 9th with 180; and 10th, Mongolian with 105.

“It is a wonderful thing that Filipinos recognize the value of choosing to live in this welcoming, city, such as, Winnipeg. As a Member of Parliament, I am proud to call Winnipeg my home and the people from all cultures and walks of life are always welcome here,” said Kevin Lamoureux, MP for Winnipeg North.

“The Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program has been the front and centre for the increase of the Filipino immigrants in Manitoba, as such, they become an economic engine in the Manitoba economy,”said Fred de Villa, chairman of the Filipino Breakfast Council of Winnipeg. One might recall, de Villa and his group rallied to remove the landing fee in 1995 and later reduce to $475 in 2005. “Housing is number problem of the new immigrants and I do hope that the provincial government must address our concern,” de Villa added.

“Canada is the favorite destination of most Filipinos and the province of their choice is Manitoba. They want to settle down for good like raising family and be a part of a closely-knit community. And Winnipeg is a rich and progressive city. And it has lots of opportunities and big percentage of literate citizens, however, the Province and the City need more

skilled workers, thanks to the Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program,” said Julie Javier, vp MACFFA and founder, Asian ConNEXTion and member of the Asian Heritage Society of Manitoba. “The Filipino Journal which organizes the “Bagong Dating (New Comer) Program” can relate to the situation of the new comers. This progam wants them to feel that “they will never feel alone,” she added.

“It is a pride and a delight to realize the increase of Filipinos in Winnipeg. This proves and demonstrates that our government recognizes the hardwork and dedication of Filipinos and appreciates their contributions (cultural, economic, political, educational and religious) in this great and wonderful adopted country of ours,” said said Jean Guiang, O.M.,founder of FIDWAM and one of the Filipino pioneers in Winnipeg.

The 2011 Canada Census noted the detailed language spoken most often at home ( selected non-aboriginal language). Top 10 languages include: Tagalog (Filipino) 17,855; 2nd- Panjabi, 7,015; 3rd,Chinese n.o.s, 4,595; 4th Spanish, 3,315; 5th, Rwandan, 2,775; 6th,German, 2,470 and 7th Vietnamese, 2,380; 8th, Cantonese, 2,205; and 9th, Portuguese, 2,298 and 10th, Polish, 2,155.;but, in the under "Detailed other languages spoken regularly at home, includes, 1st: Tagalog (Filipino) 7,825; 2nd German, 4,855; 3rd Ukrainian, 2, 810; 4th Spanish, 2,750; 5th, Portuguese, 2,105; 6th, Polish.1,645; 7th Italian,1,500; 8th, Panjabi, 1,425; and 9th Chinese, 1,140.

It is noted that the Canadian population is diverse for having 200 ethnic origins. And one out of 5 people in Canada's population is foreign-born and mostly live in the 3 largest cities, Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal. And for the past 30 years, he majority of new Canadians came from Asia and MIddle East especially from the Philippines and China. But in 2011, the survey suggests that there is change in trend when new Canadians start arriving from Africa, Caribbean and Central & South America.

Filipino Journal May 20-June 5, 2013

Well tax season is past for most of us and, for the next little while, I would

like to discuss more purely business concerns. This edition, I will talk about accounting software.

Over the years, there has been a real revolution in business software including general ledger packages for small to medium size companies. Presently, the small to medium size business market is dominated by two packages, Sage (Simply) and Quick Books. Back in the early 1990s, general ledger programmes with features like these would probably have cost $1,000 or more, and there were likely dozens of alternatives. Currently, both packages are regularly

priced starting at $200 or less. They are also readily acquired at big box stores and updated on a regular basis.

Sage is interesting in that it started as a Canadian company named Bedford, was purchased by Computer Associates and renamed Simply Accounting, only in the last several years to be purchased by Sage, a British company. Originally, I used it primarily for its payroll feature but it has definitely become a powerful tool. It is the most popular business software in Canada. Quick Books has been owned by Intuit probably since the beginning and is more popular in the United States although it has some strong adherents in Canada.

In our office, we support both of these packages and have identified some comparisons. Sage is more difficult to set up with more solid insistence on consistent numbering with standard accounting procedures and, as a result, when installed seems to be easier for clients to operate and maintain on a continuing basis. Quick Books is more flexible in the set up process, but clients can find the day to day operation more confusing and this often results in more time by the accountants at year end in correcting errors.

Sage does have good templates that really assist in the initial set up. With both programmes I would suggest getting assistance from some one knowledgeable about bookkeeping or accounting.

That leads me to another point. The option can be provided in Quick Books to use “lay person” account headings, essentially account names and not numbers to locate and identify accounts. The numbering system has

evolved over decades, years, maybe centuries. It has evolved to make life easier. I would suggest that it is much better to accept what has been proven to work. In the one example that I remember, a lady came into our office and amounts had been posted to, for example, Office, Office supplies, Office Inventory, Office Repairs and Maintenance, Office Lease, Office Rent, etc. without proper care. It would have been much easier to have just used the four digit numbering system.

Sage and Quick Books are the most popular packages from my experience for the small to medium size businesses. There are numerous other packages in the market from personal accounting packages that may be suitable for tracking your personal bank account to high end packages for multilevel and multi country applications. The latter will quickly be rejected by small business because of the price and cost of installation, but there are other

choices. It is probably best, unless you have considerable experience, to talk to an accountant about what is best for your situation. Do you need inventory control, payroll or multi user, for example? Does your business have special needs such as an insurance agency and you want to track renewals or an auto repair that needs to track costs at each work station.

"Guys and Dolls": genuinely entertaining to the max!

When you visit Dr. Tom Colina and Dr. Tricia Magsino-Barnabe at

their dental clinic, their service is for smile; but when you watch Tom Colina and Tricia Magsino-Barnabe, the actors, on the stage engagingly performing their roles in"Guys and Dolls", their service is for laughter.

Tricia Magsino-Barnabe carries the role of Miss Adelaide with ease and elan. Her presence on the stage, either acting or singing, is a binding spirit for a collective fun. Being exposed to musical theatre for many years and performed the role of Kim in "Miss Saigon";, Maria in "West Side Story"; Oliver in "Oliver"; and Audrey in "Little Shop Of Horrors, Tricia exudes that infectious performance which helps to sparkle other actors in specific characters. Ken Hamin, as Nathan Detriot, Adelaide's fiance for 14 years, cemented his role in a very casual and believable way while waiting for the time to resolve his gambling addiction by leading the way to conversion. It is a poignant scene between Adeliade and Nathan in the number "Sue Me...". Sarah Brown (Katie Davidson), the "mission doll" is paired with hollywoodish stature of Sky Masterson (Sam Paulos) and their roles are uniquely blended into a spirited Bloody Mary. Sam is Sky, vice versa. Katie's clarity of voice defines her role in the right context.

Suprisingly, Tom Colina hits the centre of attraction by his role as "Nicely Nicely Johnson" who sings with gusto. He is the newly discovered singing dentist! He is convincing with his role especially with Wally Mah (Benny Southstreet), who is also contagious in his acting. And this is only Tom Colina's second appearance since his last year's debut "Little Shop of Horrors".From here, Tom is able to convince the audience that he has a potential in a musical theatre.

The other actors have contributed the fusion of talents to make the audience respond with warm applause and considered the night as an experience of a unique theatrical journey, a superb entertainment for the family.

"Guys and Dolls", a 'musical fable of Broadway" based on a story and character of Damon Runyon; and it tells the story of "genuine sinners" to find their conversion thru dances and songs which define the milleiu of the 50's.. Music and lyrics by Frank Loessers, the Winnpeg production is sponsored by the Manitoba Dental Association and the proceeds would go to support Prairie Theatre Exchange and CancerCare Manitoba Foundation and for Head and Neck cancer patients.

Expect a wonderful theatrical journey in the 3rd offering by the Manitoba Dental Association's 2014.

No way, Josey!

Sweet Treats at Winnipeg WineFestI can sum up my experience at last month’s Winnipeg Wine Festival into three themes: fancy shoes, savoury cheeses, and aisles upon aisles of fermented grape juice.

As a WineFest newbie, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect when strolling into the Winnipeg Convention Centre. What I immediately saw was dashing men and women dressed to the nines, stacks of empty wine glasses waiting to be filled, and hundreds of wine booths begging to be tasted.

Mistake me not for a wine connoisseur. I am simply an explorer, with a keen interest in

by Jackie Doming

trying new things. I was open to all selections – but gravitated towards sweeter and fruitier choices.

With that in mind, here are a few “sweet treat” selections that might just tickle your tastebuds:.Extra sweetJacob’s Creek MoscatoThis award-winning wine is described as “light and refreshing on the palate.” In fact, it’s so deliciously sweet that I would easily compare it to candy. (In my books, that’s a good thing.) It has soft fruity flavours and is best served chilled.

Palate: light, refreshing, fruityCountry: AustraliaPrice: $12.99

Lighter selectionRisata’s Moscato d’AstiThis sparkling wine is appropriately named Risata (meaning laughter in Italian) for its bubbly nature. Risata’s Moscato d’Asti is the perfect choice if you’re looking for something with a fresh aromatic quality.Palate: delicate, bubbly, fruity (ripe stone fruit, tangerines and honey)Country: ItalyPrice: n/a (coming to Manitoba summer 2013)

Vibrant fruity flavourApothic WhiteThere’s more to the Apothic White than its pretty gold label. This American wine combines Chardonnay, Riesling and Moscato in holy matrimony to create a bold and fruity blend.Palate: smooth, fruity (peach, pineapple, honey and vanilla spice)Country: United StatesPrice: $14.99Feeling mead-yRosewood Estates Winery Mead RoyaleI’ve personally never tried mead before my experience at the Winnipeg Wine Festival, and would describe it as exactly what you would expect from fermented honey. Rosewood Estates has captured the semi-sweet essence of

Mead Royale quite nicely, and also offers different options if you’re look for something drier and less sugary sweet.Palate: semi-sweet, fruity (honey, orange, pears, marzipan and ginger)Country: CanadaPrice: n/a

‘F&F6’ stars praise Filipino fans

The “Fast and Furious 6” stars lead by Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Luke

Evans and Gina Carano together with producer Neal H. Moritz graced the red carpet premiere of

the Hollywood action movie at the SM MOA on Wednesday night.

Amidst deafening cheers of their Filipino fans, Vin exclaimed onstage that he loves Manila, adding that the cast were so proud

as the red carpet premiere here is the best he has ever been to. Vin also greeted the crowds in Tagalog to the delight of the screaming fans.

The cast members were very accommodating as they signed autographs, shook hands and took photos with their equally-enthusiastic fans during their red carpet walk.

Luke, who plays antagonist Owen Shaw in the movie’s sixth installment, gladly sang a few lines from the Tagalog song “Kailangan Kita.” He played

Chris in Miss Saigon. American actress and mixed martial artist.

Gina Carano was also all smiles as she walked down the red carpet.

Aside from fast-paced car chases and death-defying driving stunts, “Fast and Furious 6” also

focuses on the value of family. The promotional event is part of the movie’s world tour. The tour also includes visits to London, Beijing, Seoul and Cabo San Lucas.

The film will be shown in theaters nationwide starting May 24.

Winning and Losing celebs in 2013 elections

According to the latest unofficial results from the Commission on Elections

(Comelec) Transparency Server, the fate of celebrities who ran in the May 13 polls can’t be judged by their relatively popularity with their fans.

Included among the winners were actor and incumbent mayor Herbert Bautista of Quezon City, ER Ejercito in the gubernatorial race of Laguna, and the husband and wife team of Jinkee Pacquiao, winner of the vice-gubernatorial race in Sarangani province, and

the congressional seat in the lone district of Sarangani, respectively.

Actor Jolo Revilla won in the vice-gubernatorial race in Cavite, actress and re-electionist governor Vilma Santos in Batangas province. and television host and actress Lucy Torres as congresswoman of the fourth district of Leyte.

Meanwhile, actor and Liberal Party bet Aga Muhlach maintains his slim lead in the congressional race for the fourth district of Camarines Sur province. However actor Richard Gomez, who is

running under the Liberal Party, is trailing his rival in the Ormoc City mayoral race, as well as actor Joey Marquez in the congressional race in Parañaque’s second district.

At the losing end of the polls were veteran actor Christopher de Leon in Batangas City’s second district, jukebox Queen Imelda Papin in her congressional bid in San Jose del Monte, Bulacan, and talent manager Annabelle Rama who ran for congresswoman in Cebu City’s first district under the United Nationalist Alliance.

Election 2013: PNoy team wins but political dynasty becomes an ugly head; rampart vote buying and violence mark the supposedly peaceful election

Grace Poe, the adopted daughter of the mega-star of 60's, Susan Roces and the late "da king" Fernando Poe Jr., a neophyte in politics, and who dropped the last name, Lamanzares for political reason, is the number in the senatorial line-up dominated by the PNoy candidates, according the unofficial result from the Commission of Election.

But the 2013 election has become the major stage for the continuous surge of political dynasties who rule the country and which has been criticized by local critics and international observers.

The most prominent families include the Estrada, a.k.a Ejercito: former president Joseph Estrada, the newly elected Mayor of Manila beating the crime-figther incumbent Alfredo Lim; Guia Gomez, mother of senatorial candidate JV Ejercito, who is elected a mayor of San Juan; the incumbent son of Erap, Jinggoy Estrada; and the Laguna provincial governeor, ER Ejercito. The Marcoses continue their political reign inspite of the past records in governannce: the former 1st Lady Imelda Romualdez Marcos, running for Congressman in the Marcos bastion, together with her daughter, Imee Marcos Manotoc, as a governor; and the current Bongbong Marcos who has an ambition to run for president in 2016; and the Binays: Jojo Binay, the current vice president of the Philippines has his daughter, Nancy, as one of the candidate of his own party UNA; and in the bag, the re-election of his

son as mayor of Makati; and his wife who had become the Mayor of Makati once;and in the Las Pinas City, a suburbs of Manila, the Aquilars and the Villars are heading to be establishing a strong foothold on political dynasty: Manny Villar, the current senator; and his wife Cynthia Aquilar Villar, formerly a representative, now is running for senator under Pnoy Team; the Aquilars have governed Las Pinas for many decades; in Cavite, the Revillas are becoming an institution among voters: Ramon Revilla, the 50's movie hearthrob and his son, Bong Revilla, and his wife Lani Mercado; and down south of the Philippines, the current Filipino boxer, Pacquiao and his wife, Jinky, the former, re-electionist and the latter, is the current candidate for a provincial position.

These are only some of the families whose political prominence have become the common candidates in the national, congressional and local elections.

The Supreme Court stopped the proposal by the Comelec to limit the withdrawal of money from the bank to stop vote buying. Every election is the best time for moneyed politicians to win the election.

Peace and order problems have become one of the political ingredients in any election. Warring politicians resort to violence just for the sake of being elected.

In this latest election, there were 52 million who cast their ballots to define the country's political future.

My Ride

Toyota RAV4 Photos by Ron Cantiveros | Filipino Journal

A drive around the city2013 Toyota RAV4 AWD LE

One of the best ways to get an appreciation for any vehicle is to take it on

a road trip, or pretend to take it on a road trip. In the case of the newly designed, 4th generation 2013 Toyota RAV4, that meant taking it around the Perimeter Hwy. I could have easily driven to Portage La Prairie for a Timmy’s run but that would mean having to drive back. At least driving on the Perimeter, I’m almost back at my original destination.

The most exciting aspect of the new RAV4 is the crude exterior mounted spare tire is gone. Well, it’s been “re-tired” to a more practical location – inside and unseen. The former rear swing out gate is now a rear lift gate with a power lift gate option in the Limited trim model, finally!

The new look RAV4 has modern design touches on the interior including the faux plastic carbon fiber panelling. The centre stack is uniquely Toyota with large knobs and buttons and that will work well in the winter when you’ve got your gloves on.

It’s hard to imagine that the RAV4 came with a 3rd row of seats. That’s gone too. The rear 60-40 seats fold down in an easy 2-step process that opens up the rear cargo cabin for those long road trips and camping expeditions. Toyota needs to get it down to 1-step rear seat release latch just like the Honda CR-V.

Goodbye V6! The 2013 Toyota RAV4 is powered by a 2.5l inline 4-cylinder 176hp engine and features three driving modes – Normal, ECO and Sport. ECO will save you gas and provide enhanced fuel efficiency and you’re going nowhere fast. Normal mode, is basically regular city driving so that’s kind of fun. And Sport mode changes the throttle and steering wheel response but unfortunately doesn’t magically turn the RAV4 into a Porsche.

The RAV4 clips along the highway with relative ease and comfort and designed for driving in the right lane. It’s a road trip around the Perimeter! Enjoy the ride.

The price of our 2013 Toyota RAV4 AWD LE test vehicle was $26,990 and came with the $1000 upgrade package that included 6

speakers, 6.1 inch display audio, privacy glass, backup camera, roof rails, and cargo area tonneau cover. The RAV4 comes in FWD

and AWD versions in LE, XLE and Limited trim models with the XLE starting from $31,700.

Province recognizes Asian Heritage Month May celebration

Heritage symposium ushers more understanding on Asian cultural values

Inspirational talk started when the four panelists zeroed in on how they are able to attain

success in spite of their being Asians. Each panelist told their stories about their families, their dreams and aspirations, and how they were able to hurdle many problems in a multicultural society; and as the result, they inspired the high school students by citing various tips to a successful career. The panelists include Mike Pagtakhan, city councillor; Keri Latimer, songwriter; Kerin Dhillon, cbc broadcaster; and Ashely Au, musician.

The opening remark was given by Dr. Neil Besner, VP, curriculum. He welcomed the students and hoping that some of the students would choose University of Winnipeg as their post-secondary university.

This symposium marks another event of the month-long celebration of the month of May as Asian Heritage Montn all over Canada. The local group, Asian Heritage Society of Manitoba, is led by Art Miki, president. Other officers and members include Rod E. The Kickoff Run will get underway on Saturday, June 22nd and will feature a convoy of volunteers and Blue Bomber alumni who will escort the Kickoff football and the Grey Cup as they make their way through the following communities, where photo opportunities will be available for fans: Saturday, June

“We invite fans to get involved in the celebration,”

said Brown, “by joining us at stops along the way where they can enjoy complimentary Tim Hortons coffee and donuts, get a picture taken with the Grey Cup or cheer on runners.”

In total, 300 runners will be selected from all contest opportunities with entry details announced starting on May 21st in the Winnipeg Free Press where fans can enter online at www.winnipegfreepress.com/contests.

Fans are also invited to enter by dropping off a ballot at any Tim Hortons location or by tuning into radio partners at Golden West Radio, Westman Communications or CJOB/Power 97 for all details.

Once all runners have been selected, the Final 20 will be chosen to participate in the Opening Ceremonies when the ball will be run to centre field by a surprise guest.

Who's going to run with Ron Cantiveros, Publisher of the Filipino Journal during the Kickoff Run? It could be you. Visit our website on May 21st for complete details.

PAHALANG PABABA

Personal life might involve some changes. If you associate with people who share this same attitude the positive energy will be magnified. Surround yourself with people who encourage and uplift you and you will make your dreams come true.

You are on the cusp of a new beginning and it is crucial to have your dreams and goals at the front of your mind. Continue down the path to happiness and fulfillment only stopping to renew your inspiration and fine tune your method. If you find yourself getting irritable today, take a break from what you are doing and relax for a few minutes.

Your charitable side will be highlighted today. Directing your energies and generosity to the actual individuals that could use your support will help to change the way you feel about giving. You want to believe the best of everyone and always maintain a positive outlook.

Getting organized right now is a good idea -- it will help you be more prepared for the curve balls that are very likely to be coming your way soon. Your head is in the clouds today. Take advantage of this day by having fun with friends, going shopping or doing anything else that doesn’t include deadlines or deep concentration.

Sometimes you find your true depth when you rise up to face a challenge. Welcome the challenge and rise to the occasion. . It’s a waste of time to hide your abilities, and this particular person is way too smart. They’ll be able to see right through your act in a minute. Just be genuine -- and be happy!

Today is a time to free yourself from the restrictions that others have placed upon you. Tackle a new project that gives you pleasure. You will also be energized by others, and eager to take part in group activities. It’s all about sharing ideas, sharing laughs and sharing intimate moments for you, right now.

Your personal charm and attractiveness has a positive effect on you at this time. People see you as a loving and lovable person, and as someone who is aware of their needs and feelings, which can benefit you at this time. Acknowledge the so-called “bad feeling” as having the same right to express itself as all other “good feelings”.

This is a day where you too should take time off but it seems like this likely won’t happen. Finish all the things you need to do today and then make others wait for you to have time to yourself. You’ve got to make the most of your time right now and make as much progress as you can. Just don’t miss a social outing that could be good for business.

Don’t let negative thinking get you down -- criticism for its own sake is a waste of time. Lack of confidence can slow you down, so believe in yourself even when others don’t. You don’t have to change your opinions, but listening to different perspectives will only enrich you.

Spending quiet time alone and expanding your mental horizons may be just what you need at the moment. You may have your entire map to success planned out, but an unplanned for occurrence could cause you to change directions. Keep it simple so that there is always room for some unexpected excitement.

Going with your gut feeling today will pay off in a big way. Others will try to change your mind so be sure and heed what your inner voice tells you. Step up and speak out. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain. You know what they say….what is worth having is worth sacrificing for.

Your creativity could use a nice bit of exercise right now, and the kitchen can be the perfect gym for its workout! Sharing your affection by sharing your food will be a very rewarding experience for you and your people. You will work towards building a better foundation for yourself.

Volunteer photographers needed. Build your portfolio or use your expertise to aid the Filipino Journal by photographing special events and concerts. Must have own equipment and transportation. Photo editing skills would be helpful but not required.

The Filipino communities are growing in Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver & Winnipeg. More & more events being passed along our way, we are looking to complement our team with volunteer photographers to cover all those events.

As with any community newspaper, we focus on local events such as community gatherings, picnics, sporting events, press conferences, dinners. Some gigs can be as quick as 15-20 minutes and other can be long, painful & boring. Our goal is to find photographers that we can assign work to on any given story. The majority of the events are during the evenings and weekend.

As far as compensation is concerned, we’re offering several options and considerations:1. promotional compensation with photo credits on all photography used in our print and online editions.3. advertising compensation with supporting photography services ad in our print edition.4. royalties on any photographs sold through our website (in development).

Interested photographers can submit their name and portfolio [email protected]

DFA commends Irregular OFWs in Saudi to correct status

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) commends overseas Filipino workers

(OFWs) with status problems in Saudi Arabia to correct their residency and labor status.

According to the Department of Foreign affairs (DFA), the new guidelines were announced by the Saudi Ministries of Interior and Labor last May 10 allowing irregular workers to correct their status or leave the country without obtaining “No Objection Certificates.”

Based on the newly issued guidelines, irregular OFWs can now leave the country without the need to obtain No Objection Certificates from their current employers, provided that they do not have criminal charges or records against them.

The OFWs will also be allowed to return to the country in the future if they are able to obtain valid working visas.

Other options for irregular OFWs stated in the guidelines include returning to their original employer or transfer to a new employer even without permission or consent of the original employer, and transfer of household workers to a private sector company through the Saudi Labor Offices.

As part of the implementation of the guidelines, the Saudi government will waive all penalties and fines accruing to an illegal worker before April 06, 2013.

Also, private rights claims between a Filipino worker and his/her current employer will be settled through the court, and will not prevent the Filipino worker from transferring to a new employer.

More significantly, employers are now clearly obligated to hand over to the worker all his personal documents such as passports and residency permit upon request.

Employers are also obligated to make sure that the residency permit of workers is valid. Failure to do so is sufficient grounds for a worker to end their contractual relationship.

The deadline to avail of these concessions is July 03, 2013.

Subsequently, the Saudi government will resume its inspections and arrest and / or apply fines against violators – both employers and employees.

Specific details of the guidelines are available in both Filipino and English on the Philippine Embassy in Riyadh’s website: www.philembassy-riyadh.org

Winnipeg Emperors set to invade Asian Hockey

ChampionshipsAsian hockey in Winnipeg

is growing! As I laced up my skates a couple weeks ago in the visiting team locker room at MTS Centre, I realized the amazing growth the Winnipeg Emperors have had over the last couple of years. Through the course of the last three hockey seasons, the Winnipeg Emperors have grown from one team to three separate squads with one goal in mind - dominate at the Asian hockey championships in Toronto. Between three teams and over 40 guys on the roster, gearing up in Emperors apparel and uniforms makes group buys pretty easy. It will only be a matter of time before the Winnipeg Emperors open up their own gear store.

Three squads composed of 40 players are ready to compete and represent the collective spirit of Asian hockey from Winnipeg. The Asian Hockey Championships is an annual event that is dedicated to promoting hockey in the East

Asian community. It is one of the world’s largest East Asian Hockey tournaments, and the event has been running for 24 years. Go Emperors Go!

Winnipeg Emperors Squad A: Scotty Yeung, Richard Mao, Mike Donaghy, Hugh Hull, Liam O’Neil, Eoghan O’Neil, Rob Woo, Sean O’Neil, Jeomar Masesar, Allan Chan, Aaron Lam, Lawerence Chang, Darrell Lorbis and Mark Galang.

Winnipeg Emperors Squad B: Sel Tse, Gary Ma, Stanley Eng, Vinh Nguyen, Ryan Tsang, Kim Tsang, Ron Cantiveros, Nick McClurg, Ryan Murray, Mike De La Cruz, Travis Takeuchi, Vinh Huynh and Anthony Battad

Winnipeg Emperors Squad C: Tommy Dao, Shawn Masear, Johnny Kien, Jo Ang, Mike Koehler, Henry Tat, Phil Tat, Garrett Wong, Glen Henson, Billy Phantha, Nathan Kowalski, Reynold Beniza and Dan Luk.

Dr. Anthony Battad will be backstopping the Winnipeg Emperors B Squad.

The last line of defence for the Winnipeg Emperors A Squad in goal, Mark Galang.Jeomar Masesar will be part of Winnipeg Emperors A Squad high flying offence.
