ISSUE 18. MAY 2018 Enjoy the wonder of Cathedral Carlisle One of the city’s premier gems If you’re mooching around Carlisle city centre, we’d heartily recommend a visit to the Cathedral. It dates back to 1122 and has been battered worn by centuries of Border warfare. If the walls could speak they would have many stories to tell. Features worthy of note include the East Window, with its 14 th Century stained glass. There is an interesting 14 th century barrel vaulted painted ceiling above the choir stalls. The carved capitals of the columns in the Choir represent activities associated with the months of the year and the early 15 th century choir stalls are notable examples of medieval carving. The Treasury contains a fine display of ecclesiastical silver and treasures, illustrating the story of Christians in Cumbria through the centuries.
