Medically Assisted Treatment in Drug Courts and Its Impact on Testing
Judge Mary A. Celeste (ret.), LLC
With the legalization of marijuana, the opioid epidemic and the resurgence of
methamphetamine use, now more than ever, drug courts are much needed. The
importance of Medically Assisted Treatment (MAT) is increasingly pointing toward
expanding methadone, buprenorphine and Vivitrol treatment in drug courts. Even
medical marijuana may play a role as medically assisted treatment for opioid
use disorder. The National Association of Drug Court Professionals (NADCP) has
established guidelines for MAT and some Courts vary on their approaches. What
percentage of courts is using MAT? Does the use of MAT vary depending upon
demographics? Which Courts are using what treatments? Does the use of MAT affect
testing protocols? What types of drugs are used for MAT? Should drug treatments be
included for testing? Join Judge Celeste in this session as she shares answers to these
intriguing questions.

recommendations for collection of two samples (A and B). The device must collect 1mL
of neat oral fluid “A” (primary) and 1mL of neat oral fluid “B” (split) either simultaneously
or serially. A single device for the simultaneous collection of A and B is described.

2:15 PM–2:30 PM Break
2:30 PM–3:30 PM A Day in the Life of an MRO: How to Make My Day!
David Paine, American Medical Review Officers LLC
The role of the MRO is often not well understood by other Service Agents and employers.
Many Service Agents miss the big picture and don’t see how they impact the rest of the
process. Some examples: collectors often don’t realize the impact of collection errors
or failing to send the CCF to the MRO office. Many don’t know help is just a phone call
away for assistance or regulatory clarification. SAPs often don’t understand nuances of
toxicology yet may be hesitant to call the MRO. MROs need to cooperate with and assist
with SAP questions and be available to collectors, labs, employers and regulatory officials.
No matter if you are a collector, lab, MRO, SAP, or DER, you will leave this session with a
clear understanding of your role and how it fits into the big picture and how, by working
together, we can maximize the drug testing process.
