The first week of the month starts off with several meetings held by our local organizations, the Health Fair, and a Cooper Landing Community Club meeting. Then we encourage all of our members to join us at our Chamber Spring Social Mixer on May 14th to share their winter adventures and network with other local business owners. Following that, and one the local favorite events, is the annual Cooper Landing Snail-a-Thon Race held Saturday morning, May 18th. And the activity doesn’t stop there! Our big event of the month is the 2019 Cooper Landing Drift Boat Regatta being held in conjunction with the 70th Anniversary Celebration of the Cooper Landing Community Club and Hall. This year’s regatta is a fund raiser for the Kenai Watershed Forum, It begins May 25th with a pre-race barbecue at Eagle Landing Resort at noon. Participants in the race should start putting their boats in at 11:30 am so they can grab a bite to eat with the crowd before the 1 pm start. (Note all boats must be in by 12:30 pm) New to the race this year is the opening of the Drift Boats category for both 18 AND 20 foot boats, and a Raft category for the most trash clean up. We’ve also added a prize for the best decorated boats! If you are not able to race but would like to participate with a donation, please email us at the Chamber ([email protected]) and we will graciously accept your donation! Corporate sponsorship is still being sought for racers and raft participants. After the racers have put their boats away, the awards ceremony is to be held in conjunction with the Cooper Landing Community Club’s 70th Anniversary Celebration at the Community Hall. The Community Club board has been busy the last few months to make this one of the highlighted events in the Landing for the year. Be sure to help support them by purchasing the cool new t-shirt they specifically for this event. And we’ll let you in on a little secret… it will be a collector item for all our softball lovers out there! Speaking of softball…. It’s time to start warming your arm up and get those bats out. The first game for the 2019 Cooper Landing Softball Tournament is Thursday evening at 7 pm on May 30th! It’s crazy May in the Landing… time to Rock-n-Roll! Stephanie Lesmeister, President

Alaska Rivers Company (ARC) is inviting the public to join them for a hands-on, science-based, educational presentation by the Bird Treatment and Learning Center. This program includes a Golden Eagle (Denali) and a Short-Eared Owl (Flame) and covers biology, ecology and conservation given by an experienced and certified presenter from Bird TLC. The presentation is free,

compliments of ARC. Prior and following the presentation, Alaska Rivers Company will be offering their Float n Feathers Scenic Float for those interested in spotting more species on the Upper Kenai River. For EACH rafting participant who mentions the Bird TLC (and throughout the month of May), ARC will donate $5 to the Bird TLC. The Bird TLC takes in over 1000 injured birds annually from every part of Alaska including the remote Arctic regions, and their bird placement program serves wildlife education facilities throughout North America. The Bird Treatment and Learning Center is an independent 501(c)3 organization with operations that includes not only avian rehabilitation, but also science curriculum based, interactive education , as well as a non-releasable bird placement program and a flight center on a local Army base. Please contact ARC for departure times and rates. (907) 595-1226 or email [email protected] and help support the efforts of the Bird Treatment & Learning Center this May!

Cooper Landing Historical Society & Museum

Helen and Pat Gwin and Katie Feichtinger are honorees at the May 27 opening of Cooper Landing Museum. Helen and Pat for their Cooper Landing

pioneering and Katie for the artistic and informative map she burned onto a monumental slice of a local spruce cut by Jack Harris which will be installed below the big museum sign on the old Cooper Landing schoolhouse. Everyone is invited to join us at 1 pm on Memorial Day for the festivities, refreshments, and door prizes.

Mayme Ohnemus started the long and involved process of naming a mountain peak above Gwin’s Lodge for Helen and a naming a

ridge running west of the peak “Old Buzzard Ridge” in honor of Pat

Gwin for their involvement in the area not only with their business but in many positive aspects of community growth. (These geographic sites were approved and are shown on Katie’s map). While Pat Gwin

played a smaller role in community volunteerism—he did help build the original community hall—selling of the contents of his shop, offered by Helen, paid for the gravel pad for the schoolhouse museum building. Helen was active with the first local chamber of commerce, and helped with the organization of the community club in 1949. After selling the lodge in the 1970s, Helen helped found the Sexy Senior Dumpster Cleaners in 1997 and the Cooper Landing Senior Citizen Corp. Inc. in 1999, served for many years as treasurer for the Dall Homemakers, and generously supported CLHS and the Cooper Landing Museum.

Pictures show Helen as cashier for one of many events behind the sign copied from the sign Jack Lean sported in the old Cooper Landing Store (now a museum building), Mayme Ohnemus talking about Helen during the standing-room-only memorial for Helen after her death in 2007, Pat and Helen in their bar in 1952, Helen tending the guest book at the opening of Eagles View senior housing in 2006 while accompanied by Keith Freeman, Helen dancing with Harold Davis at a 1953 party at the community hall (Frank Towle and Betty Sunday also on the dance floor), Helen at Sexy Senior Dumpster Cleaning work, and Helen in the museum with Mary Fort showing some of the objects Helen donated: a white fox fur, Native baskets, and an early Gwin’s Cafe sign. Booklets of the Gwin’s Cooper Landing history are available in the museum

for a donation. I’ll be working at the museum several days be-

fore the May 27 opening. Feel free to stop by when you see Hyper Green parked there. The museum phone number is 907 595-3500 and my cell is 907 202-6049. Mona Painter
