Dear Chamber Members,
May is a big month for us at the Chamber! We are excited to
be sponsoring the 12th Annual Drift Boat Regatta on May 28th.
We will be providing concessions for that night of softball and
will have the award’s ceremony before the first game. I hope
you will all join us in this fun event. If you are available to
volunteer for either the regatta or the after-party, please
contact us. We are always in need of extra hands. Included in
this issue of the GEM is a registration form, if you are interested
in participating, please fill it out and turn it in to any chamber
board member. We are hoping for a great turn out this year.
We are also having our opening day at the Chamber office
on May 14th. We are holding this in conjunction with the
Cooper Landing Historical Society and Museum, who will be
hosting a fun event/fundraiser to help create a trail map for
their building. We will have our New Upper Kenai Visitor’s Guide
available for our members to pick up and display at their
places of business. It has been a long process with a lot of love
and time put into the production, but it is well worth it because
we are so excited to showcase our special part of Alaska.
Tourism is expected to be up this year and that is good news
for our local businesses!
Hope this issue of the GEM finds you all well and preparing for a
busy and fun summer

Cooper Landing Library News
With summer just around the corner, spring cleaning is
done, books, DVDs, audios have been weeded, and the
bookcases rearranged. The library has a fresh and inviting
look to it. There are lots of little nooks where you can sit
and read or work on your tablet or laptop. The children's
section has expanded so that the young adult books are
separated from the juvenile books. It's light, bright, and
fun. We're looking forward to seeing your faces.
With lots of space on the shelves, new books and movies
are being added rapidly. New adult books: The Zookeeper's Wife by Diane Ackerman; God Help
the Child by Toni Morrison; H is for Hawk by Helen Macdonald; The Gluten-free Table by Jilly Lagasse
and Jessie Lagasse Swanson; About Grace by Anthony Doerr; X by Sue Grafton; The Marriage of
Opposites by Alice Hoffman; I Hate to Leave This Beautiful Place by Howard Norman; Trigger
Warning by Neil Gaiman; World Gone By by Dennis Lehane; Wisdom for Home Preservers by Robin
Ripley; The Paleo Approach Cookbook by Sarah Ballantyne, PhD.
The No Book Book Club will be showing The Perks of Being a Wallflower at 7 PM on May 28. Bring
your own beverage and a snack.
Cooper Landing Community Library is announcing a partnership with Driving-Tests.org, a company
dedicated to driver safety and education, to offer free DMV practice tests to library patrons. The
new service includes free tests, written specifically based on the state DMV materials, and is the
only site of its kind to include accessibility tools that allow users to hear selections read aloud, make
them into MP3s, translate pages into other languages, magnify text, and mask sections of the screen
for greater visibility on driving practice tests. Visit http://cooperlandingcl.driving-tests.org/alaska/.
Visit the library and enter to win $1,000 to open or add to an Individual Retirement Account (IRA) by
participating in The DASH for the STASH contest, a multi-State investor education and protection
program and poster contest. To play, read the content on each poster at the library, scan the
unique QR code to access that topic’s quiz question, and submit your answer via smartphone,
tablet, or laptop computer. Participants can also play via public computer at the library.
We are at the transitional time of year again when many of our winter volunteers are getting ready
to gear up for their summer activities and the summer volunteers are returning. We are keeping the
same hours for the summer as for the winter, with only a couple of exceptions. Susanna will let us
know soon when the preschool summer reading program will take place and we are looking for
someone to take on the evening shift. Those days and hours will be announced in the near future.
Time to Pay The Pig!
There are far too many overdues. Please take the time to check your shelves or DVD players and
return what you may have. We do not have set fines for overdue materials but you are
encouraged to donate to the pig.
Library hours: Monday through Wednesday 1-3 PM; Thursday 12-4 PM; Friday 11 AM - 7 PM;
Saturday 10:30 AM - 3:30 PM.
Katie Thomas, Director
Cooper Landing Community
School Programs
Tot Time: Mondays, 11am, Cooper Landing School gym. Bring
those little ones in to run around and burn off some energy. You
might buy yourself some nap time later! Last day will be May 16.
No Book Book Club: 7pm at the Cooper Landing Community
Library. Enjoy literature but don't have time to read? Or do you
just really like movies? Even if you only read the Cliff’s Notes in
high school, there’s a good chance you’ll enjoy the film. They
don’t call them classics for nothing! Feel free to bring a friend, a
beverage, and your own popcorn, just no kids under the age of 18.

Cooper Landing Snail-a-Thon
Saturday, May 21st, 2016 at 10 am
Start at St. John Newman's Catholic Church
Once again, planning is underway for the Snug Harbor Snail-a-
Thon. Can you believe it first started as a local fundraiser in 1980, 36
years ago? In keeping with community tradition, the parents at
Cooper Landing School are continuing to promote the event but are
no longer using it as a means of local fundraising.
Meet at the Catholic Church at 10am on May 21 to begin the 5 mile
walk, run, or bike ride. Please leave your pets at home. POTLUCK
picnic begins at 12pm at Waikiki Beach. Everyone invited! Bring a
potluck dish and join the fun, family-friendly, community-building event.
Volunteers and a few donations are needed. Please contact Heather Harrison at 598-1210 if you
can help.
Cooper Landing Historical Society
& Museum
It was a busy meeting on April 16 at the museum for
CLHS members as we went through the proposed
bylaws doing a bit of tweaking, defining and eventually
approving. Barb Atkinson was elected secretary and
Bob Baldwin offered to work as treasurer pro tem.
Everyone is looking forward to Saturday, May 14, and
the fun day being held jointly with the Chamber of
Commerce. Mayme Ohnemus had all those present
take part in a rehearsal for the Dead Bear Poker Walk. I
had the winning hand of 3 eights!
Hope we’ll have a great bunch taking part in the fun at
the museum May 14 from 11 to 2 pm. Free hotdogs,
cookies, coffee, and pop and games like Feed the Bear and Cast a Line will be available. The mu-
seum buildings and the chamber cabin will be open for visiting,
too. Mona Painter
Cooper Landing Senior Citizen Corp. Inc. Senior Links Everyone interested is invited to attend the May 3, 2016 CLSCCI Board Meeting at Helen Gwin
Commons in Eagles View beginning at 1:30 pm and the May 10 General Meeting, same place,
beginning with a potluck luncheon at 11:30 am. On the May 10 business agenda will be election of
board members with nominated Alma Fowler and Frank Feichtinger being presented. Ed Holsten’s
program on "Indonesia Travels" will be the last scheduled presentation on May 10.
Tri City’s Construction Inc. from Soldotna plans to start on the Dean Birmley Memorial Entrance to
Helen Gwin Commons on the afternoon of May 10, after the meeting is adjourned. All the
damaged concrete will be removed and replaced for a super-smooth and safer entrance. Funds
for this project have been donated by friends of Dean.
Volunteers are needed for the June 18 garage sale taking place in the bus garage near Ravens
View. Articles for sale can be taken to the bus garage.
Photos show a very surprised Nana on April 17 when more
than 20 of her friends gathered to celebrate her birthday in
Helen Gwin Commons. Members of her family from Seward
joined in for cake and ice-cream before taking her to dinner.
And the second photo is showing
progress on the Snug Harbor
Road Project on a rainy
afternoon with beginning work
on the glacial moraine banks
below Eagles View. Eagles View
residents now have a little better
view of Kenai Lake with some of
the trees being removed.
