In This Issue…

The snow is finally gone and we have the months of summer ahead of us!

What a gift the sunlight is!

Now with summer before us comes all sorts of busy schedules, traveling,

and lake days. So, permit me a few minutes to pass on some important

highlights.

The last day of Sunday School is May 6th. And the following weekend, May

13th, we will recognize the graduates. Finally, Sunday, May 20th is

Confirmation Sunday, and we will have the video presentations at 8:45 AM,

followed by the Divine Service at 10:00 AM.

Then on May 27th, our Sunday Divine Services will change to 9:00 AM for

the summer months. Yes, throughout the summer, our Sunday Services will

be at 9:00 AM, instead of 10:00 AM. This was decided by your vote at the

April Voter's Meeting.

Finally, with the summer months, we will be having 3 monthly Midweek

Divine Services. For June, we have a Divine Service scheduled for June 27th

at 7:00 PM. Please mark these Midweek Divine Services down, especially if

you will find yourself out of town a lot on the weekends. These Midweek

Services are designed to minister the Lord's Word and Sacraments to you in

the midst of summer's busyness.

So, dear Baptized Saints, enjoy the warmth of the summer months, but

continually enjoy the blessing of the Lord's Word and Sacraments for you,

regardless of the time or season - gifts for your forgiveness, life, and

salvation.

Does The Church Depend On The Innovation

Of Youth? By Rev. Dr. Matthew Richard

When I was in college, I interviewed for a youth director job at a church. In the interview, I was asked how I would conduct myself as a youth director. I recall saying something to the effect, "Well, as a youth director, I will be sure to make the Bible and church relevant!" Needless to say, what I essentially did was to insult the church leaders and pastor. I also offended over two-thousand years of church history. You see, I had this idea that the Bible and the church were irrelevant and that my youthfulness would be an asset to those older outdated church leaders and what I deemed as an out of touch church. However, I was severely misguided.

I was severely misguided because the church is not like other sectors of our culture – the church does not depend on innovative youthfulness. In fact, would it even be possible to respect a church that says, "Youth, please comfort us! We are unsure about what we ought to be doing. Do you have any good ideas that we can experiment with for worship? Any thoughts on what this week’s sermon topic should be? “ In other words, while Google needs innovated young people to create ground-breaking apps and while Apple aspires to incorporate the fresh new ideas of youth culture, the church does not depend on the novelties of youth because historically no ‘healthy’ church lets youth decide its theology and practice. Yes, it is up to the pastors, elders, and enduring saints of any healthy church to not only guard the church’s theology and practice but to also teach them to the next generation.1

But why is it this way; why does the church not depend on the innovations and trends of youth? The answer: the church’s theology is not continually evolving. The church is not seeking to find a new truth or discover a new product. The church is not trying to do a new thing. If the church’s theology were continually evolving and if the church was trying to discover a new truth or do a new thing, then by all means, the innovative and fresh ideas of youth would be needed! However, since the church is not on a journey of discovery, but rather, already possesses all that she needs in Jesus and Jesus’ Word, then the goal of the church is not to discover truth ‘from’ its youth but to pass down truth ‘to’ its youth. Yes, the goal is to pass down truth that was once passed down to the pastors, elders, and enduring saints when they were once young themselves. Ideally, those who are older are called to pass down the church’s theology and practice, because they do not look down on those who are younger (1 Timothy 4:12). And those who are young, gladly receive, knowing that they are receiving good gifts (Titus 2:1-8).

What this means is that the church is about teaching youth the theology of God’s Word, equipping them with the wisdom laden ways of the church, and showing them the richness of the liturgy so that one day these youth will be able to return the favor to the next generation.

Riding for Dreams Therapeutic Riding program, located in southern Ransom County and in its 8th year, has been providing riding lessons for those that may need some adaptation to be able to ride. Horseback riding provides fun and recreation, as well as physical activity, social interaction, and building cognitive skills, outside of a traditional classroom or therapy setting. Riding helps to build confidence and provides a sense of accomplishment and well-being for riders and volunteers. Riding for Dreams has served include Autism spectrum, Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome, Learning Disabilities, Kabuki Syndrome, PTSD, and Muscular Dystrophy.

Volunteers and riders come from all over the southeast part of North Dakota, including communities of Oakes, Jamestown, Valley City, Fort Ransom, Lisbon, Gwinner, Milnor, McLeod, Rutland, Wyndmere, and Wahpeton to name a few.

The ND District in convention (2015) resolved to plant a new congregation in Watford City and is asking all ND congregations to assist financially in this effort. Watford City has grown rapidly as a result of the oil industry. Our Lord Jesus Christ calls us to take the Gospel to all the world and proclaims: “ the harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest field” (Matt 9:37-38). Redeemer Lutheran Church of Grassy Butte is serving as the “mother church”. A mission planter, Pastor Zelwyn Heide, is serving in the Watford City area as pastor of the new St. Philip Lutheran Church. The congregation is worshiping in the Roosevelt Hotel. For more information, see websites www.plantinginnorthdakota.org or www.redeemersaintphilip.org.
