This year, 19 Wing Comox will take part in the Canadian Forces Sustainable Communities competition, a division of the Communities in Bloom program.

The program has been running nationally for 17 years, and in the Canadian Forces since 2006.

The goal is to engage everyone at 19 Wing, including all Wing Units, Lodger Units, Agencies and the Wing as a whole.

The Communities

in Bloom (CiB) program is committed to “fostering civic pride, environmental responsibility and beautifi cation through community involvement and the challenge of a national program.”

CiB judges will visit 19 Wing Aug. 9 and 10 and evaluate its performance in the following:

• Tidiness• Environmental

Action • Heritage

Conservation • Urban Forestry

• Landscape, including fl oral displays

• Turf and Sports Fields

The principle of community involvement is so fundamental to the program that it is evaluated in each of the sections of evaluation.

This involves the following Community (Base) sectors, contributing to various aspects of community participation, involvement, improvement, etc. –

throughout the entire community (primarily the Base and RHU

areas and also the surrounding area and communities).

Students enter criminal mindsNorth Island

College students will soon be able to dig up a new crime career right in their own backyard.

From Forensic Anthropology to Psychological Explanations of Criminal and Deviant Behaviour, students learn to sift through human remains to recreate a person’s life, determine cause of death and discover what motivates people to commit crime in modern society.

Criminology is the latest addition to a growing selection of programs available at

the college, including Social Work Transfer Plan, Professional Cook 3, a post-degree business diploma in International Management, and new dual-admission agreements allowing students guaranteed entry to Emily Carr University of Art and Design, Vancouver Island University, the University of Victoria, and Royal Roads University.

Criminology starts this September and is already drawing widespread interest from across the North and Central Island.

Michael Green attended the Comox Valley RCMP camp while in high school and wanted to fi nd one of the fastest ways to meet his career goals.

“I asked the RCMP for the best course to take to become a police offi cer, and they told me take criminology,” he said. “To me, criminology is all about the criminal mind and how it works. I just fi nd it really, really interesting.”

Other students are returning to college on the North Island and looking for cost-effective programs

to suit their general interests.

“I’m interested in the legal system, so I’m exploring criminology as a possible career choice,” said Campbell River resident Amberle Bakker.

The two-year diploma is recognized by employers and transfers directly to degree programs at Simon Fraser University, Vancouver Island University, and other degree-granting institutions in B.C.

“The Criminology program opens doors to the fascinating fi eld of criminal law and justice

studies,” said Richard Stride, NIC’s dean of academic programs. “Students will be on the path to meaningful employment in law enforcement, corrections, the courts and all the supporting fi elds.”

Students do not need a science background to enter the program. However, a C in ENG 060, ENG 098, ESL 098 or English 12 is required.

To register or upgrade your English to be eligible for the program, visit www.nic.bc.ca/programs or call 1-800-715-0914.

NORTH ISLAND — A small car branded with a picture of dripping oil rolls up to 7 Mile Landfi ll. Printed across the side of the car is the slogan: A single drop makes a big impact.

The car belongs to Amara Janssens and Tiffany Rennick, two students who are spending the summer travelling

across the province and educating British Columbians about the benefi ts of recycling used oil.

Janssens is a communications major at Simon Fraser University and Rennick is a marketing student at UBC.

Both are co-op students who will spend the summer touring across the province as part of the British Columbia Used Oil Management

Association (BCUOMA) Summer Ambassador Program.

Their job is to visit collection facilities and distribute information, as well as conduct interviews with facility leaders.

“We have lots of questions,” Rennick said.

The young women said the summertime gig is lots of fun and they share their travels via their blog at bcusedoil.com.

BCUOMA is a nonprofi t organization started in 2003 that provides options for British Columbians to recycle used oil

materials. The program

encourages and oversees the recycling of used oil, oil

The Island Voices Chamber Choir hopes to add two voices.

The choir is comprised of 24 singers from the Comox Valley, Campbell River, and Quadra Island.

Since its creation in 1997, the choir has been has been committed to “singing excellent music excellently,” and has been building a loyal following in its home communities.

Milestones in the choir’s growth have been participation in the 1998 BC Chorfest as a “core” choir,

second-place fi nishes in the Chamber Choir category in the international choral festival Kathaumixw in 2000 and 2008, and the release in 2005 of the Island Voices’ second CD. Island Voices typically performs two major concerts each year as well as appearing in community and charity events.

Rehearsals are weekly, on Wednesday evenings, from September through to April in centrally situated Black Creek.

“We work hard at

our music, but have plenty of fun in the process,” the group says.

There are openings for two tenors.

If you are keen

to sing challenging music as part of a warm friendly team, aged 19 to 55(ish), able to read music and sing in an a-cappella setting, contact

the choir director Jo-Anne Preston to arrange an audition.

Phone 250-337-5730, 250-202-4300 or e-mail [email protected].

container, oil fi lters and, since July 1, antifreeze.

Since the start of the program, used oil is up to 79 per cent recovery. Used oil fi lter recovery is at 86 per cent and used oil containers recovery is at 88 per cent.

“British Columbians have been doing a really good job,” Janssens said. “But there’s room for improvement.”

The program is funded by environmental handling charges that

are added to the cost of oil materials at the fi rst point of sale or distribution.

In Port Hardy used oil, fi lters, and oil containers can be dropped at NAPA-Auto-Parts and E.J.Klassen GM.

Along with used oil materials, used antifreeze and containers can be brought to at the Dave Landon Motors during regular business hours.

Give your feet a rest and take a break from fl ip-fl ops

When the temperature rises, our fi rst instinct is to peel off the layers, pull out the tank tops and shorts and kick back in some breezy fl ip-fl ops.

And for many of us, multicoloured rubber thongs have become our summer footwear of choice.

But while they may help you stay comfortable and cool, those inexpensive sandals are anything but kind to your feet.

While there is no doubt fl ip-fl ops are comfy they are not

meant to be worn every day, all day.

The problem is, we’ll walk in fl ip-fl ops everywhere from the park to the beach, and back to the offi ce without regard for what they are doing to our feet.

The sole of a fl ip-fl op is very fl at, and the sole of the foot is not.

Inadequate support in the foot over prolonged periods leads to a strain in the arch ligaments.

In mild cases this can lead to discomfort on the bottoms of the

feet, in severe cases this can cause painful conditions such as plantar fasciitis and Achilles tendonitis.

Flip-fl ops’ lack of support can also cause trouble in your toes and ankles.

Wearing fl ip-fl ops causes your toes to contract, making the muscles in the front of the leg work harder, when they should be at rest.

Over time the extra

stress on the shin muscles, combined with a lack of shock absorption, can result in shin splints.

Ankle sprains are another common condition associated with wearing fl ip-fl ops.

The lack of ankle support, combined with the fl at sole of a fl ip-fl op, makes it much easier to roll on your

ankle. As if that wasn’t

enough, fl ip-fl ops can also wreak havoc on

your knees, hips and back.

Flip-fl ops have no support in the arch or heel.

This lack of support for the foot can cause a change in the alignment of the foot when walking.

This change in alignment can continue up through the knees, hips and lower back when walking.

Over time, small changes in alignment can cause increased stress and strain that eventually leads to pain.

Should we all be wearing hiking boots to the beach?

Of course not, but there are some simple things you can do to decrease the chances of having to make a trip to the physiotherapist.

When shopping for footwear, choose a sandal with a supportive, yet lightweight, sole that provides shock absorption.

Choose sandals that have solid straps to help your foot stay
