More than 80 children submitted their guess for the amount of jelly beans in the bunny jar.

There were verbal guesses from “OMG” to “a lot!” and written guesses from 100 to

“30,000and23” (exactly the way it was written). The bunny jar contained 1,881 jelly beans.

Alex Samler, submitted the closest guess, 1,944. Just 63 from the actual count! Alex is the

son of Stoneybrook residents Gary and Mayeth Samler and big brother to Brandon.

Congratulations Alex!

Many Thanks to Margurite Pasquale for chairing the event, Nancy Lively for the fabulous

APRIL’S POT LUCK WAS “ODE TO SPRING” A Friday with friends, great food, lots of laughs and a chance to meet new friends...How do

you beat that?

It happened once again on April 10th, as the “Ode to Spring” theme was used to decorate the

tables for 72 friends, families and newcomers to the community. Everybody knows the food

is always great and this month was no exception. This month the potluck was organized thru

the efforts of Tina Vogel and Larry Dickstein, Gelene and Mike Listro, Larry and Carol

Eickert, Sheila Connolly and Gene Gabrielson.

The Sarasota-Manatee area has recently been recognized as the Number One Retirement Area

in the United States and our Stoneybrook community is a great example of friends working

together to make this acknowledgement real.

If you’re not part of the group of Stoneybrook friends who come to the monthly “Potluck

Dinner” you’re invited to join us on Friday, May 8th to see for yourself. It’s easy, just sign

up at the Rec Center, or on the Website and tell us how many folks will be coming. Bring a

hot dish, salad, or dessert to serve 10-12 people. The doors open at 5:00 and the dinner

begins at 5:30!

in which we try to be helpful. MEALS are provided for shut-ins or people who have just had

surgery. We manage a LENDER’S LIST from which items may be borrowed and then re-

turned. It includes items for babies, elderly and the infirm. SUPPORT is offered to shut-ins.

We can run errands, get groceries, pick up prescriptions and help with grooming, shampoos

and nail care.

The SUNSHINE group will share care for those who are hospitalized by bringing a plant or

visiting, we give a gift to new moms and their new baby and we offer comfort to those who

suffer a death in the family.

We can only be helpful to you when we know about your needs. Therefore if we can help

you, please contact Carol Eichert at 714-7863 or [email protected] and you will be put

in touch with the supportive person.

Young moms please let us know when your new arrival comes!

We want to celebrate your joy.

When illness strikes please give us a call.

If you are interested in joining our service volunteers call Carol or watch the newsletter for our

next meeting that will be held May 11th at 11:00 after Coffee Hour in the Rec Center.

Funds to purchase gifts and flowers are raised through donations. We hope to have our second

“IN THE WETLANDS, IT IS ALL ABOUT THE FLOW” Part 5 The wetland market place part A

by Larry Eichert 5/15

Spring has come and with it comes a rebirth of wetland activity. This is a complex process and will cover two months because we are limited to one page. To understand what is happening we must enter the world of bacteria and fungi that decom-pose dead organisms recycling their nutrients back into the environment. Remember the green pond scum (various algae) that covered our wetlands last summer and the dead plants found in the wa-ter and around the banks? They provide the food source that starts this cyclic reaction. Now that the temperatures are rising with the coming of spring these are being decomposed by the bacteria. The warm temperature and the available dead organic

matter allow the bacteria to proliferate, increasing the decomposition rate. This places a varie-ty of available nutrients into the water changing the pH of the water. One of the most common compounds formed is tannic acid. At the same time the temperature of the water is increasing making the fish population more active increasing their metabolism and respiration. Then add some rain to stir up the water increasing its dissolved oxygen content and this makes both the bacteria and fish be-come even more active. This in turn sets off a chain reaction in enzyme activity in all living organisms. (Enzymes can only function at specific temperatures and pH ranges.) Putting this all together you produce a shift in the available nutrient supply which becomes the food for various organisms. This has a profound effect on the fish population. The change in pH stimu-lates the fish to breed and lay eggs. You can see their nests along the shore line below the water level. They look like hollowed out baskets in the sand. At the same time the bacteria population is exploding. With the increase in temperature of the water the eggs from last year’s zoo plankton begin to hatch and the photo plankton begin to reproduce. The zoo plankton population begins to consume the bacteria and the photo plankton uses the dissolved nutrients provided by the bacteria and fungi as a food source increasing their rate of photosynthetic reproduction with the increase in the temperature of the water. This in turn begins to decrease the over produc-tion of the bacteria and fungi activity keeping the system in check. Now there is more photo and zoo plankton than the system can support. But don’t be alarmed because at the same time the fish eggs are beginning to hatch and these organisms become the food supply of the fish fry. While all of this is going on the increase in temperature and the availability of rain coupled with wind activity now allow the dormant seeds from last year’s plants to be blown around and settle in the soil along with the seeds that have already been deposited and they begin to ger-minate. The humus (dead organic matter) content of the soil and the mineral nutrients provid-ed from the decomposition of rock and sand provide the nutrients for plants to grow. This can be seen by how fast the native vegetation takes hold in our yards, getting a head start over the grasses and plants that we feel should be planted there. These plants want to reproduce as fast as they can to take advantage of the available food supply and sun light. The plants put all of their energy in the development of their reproductive systems produc-ing flowers. The flowers become the landing pads for a vector (insect, bird or other animal) to fertilize their seeds (female sex cell) and scatter pollen (male sex cell). If the plant possesses a superior flower, with the stigma (male reproductive sex organ) being taller than the style (female reproductive organ) then the plant can self-fertilize. If the reverse is true then the plant needs some other method to propagate its own species. These other methods include trans-mission by wind or vectors. The plants that are growing in the literal zones around the water’s edge are also attracting insects to the water by flowering and producing fat molecules (nectar) that attract insect vectors which also serve as a food supply for fish and small birds. Next month we will look at the developing food chain in the web of life of a wetland community.

BOARD NEWS AND NOTES Hello and welcome to the nice warm weather that is springtime in southwest Florida. March and

April have been busy months for your BOD and we have been able to accomplish many things in-

cluding the re-election of the 6 incumbent board members to new 2 year terms. Unfortunately, we

were unable to attain a quorum of the 947 residents in order to hold the Annual Members meeting,

less than 1/3 of the residents responded but on advice from our legal counsel the election was held

and the votes counted. We also conducted a “town hall” style question and answer session with 4 of

the Board members and the 70+ residents that did attend the meeting. Lots of good questions and

discussion.

On another positive note our engineering consultants have advised that the main pool surface does

not need replacement for several more years allowing us to continue building the reserve funding to

a higher level and avoiding the inconvenience to the resident’s pool use this year. A committee of

Board members has been working with vendors on new pool furniture for the near future. We

signed a new one year contract with ICON in March and we let out public bids for landscaping ser-

vices. The committee is reviewing the submittals.

Compliance issues still remain a focal point for this Board and residents are getting the message and

the roofs are being cleaned, the sidewalks scrubbed and some needed landscaping accomplished.

The CDD is doing their part as well with the community curbs being cleaned and the common area

sidewalks power washed. Improper parking continues to still be a problem and along with the use of

fireworks inside the community will be a topic of Board discussion at our next meeting in May.

Many thanks to Director JoAnn Pytlik for her help with last month’s article and please go to our

new and much improved website: www.stoneybrookhoa.com JoAnn and Sondra have done a fabu-

lous job getting the site up and running and there is a lot of good information to be found on those

pages.
