A Word or Two…

by Pastor Mark

Milestones in life are fun to reach. Soon graduates will be getting to that magic date when what they thought would never come, does: a walk across the stage to get their diploma. Many wedding couples will start a whole new kind of life at the altar this summer. In Faith and Life Bible study at Trinity, our midweek get-togethers for adults, we have reached a really big milestone. Faith and Life began the first week of February 2009. Now, a little over five years later, we have gone through almost the whole Bible. We began with the first words of Genesis, and will soon end with the final Amen of Revelation. It’s been a great ride, and a wonderful weekly time together to share in God’s word and about our lives. We’ve had lots of laughs, some tears, and always a fulfilling time.

But Faith and Life isn’t going to end with the end of the Bible. Now that we’ve had our five-year “introduction” to the word, we will pick up where the Bible left off, about 100 A.D. Decade by decade, we will be going through the history of the Christian church in Bible study form. In other words, we will look at events in the life of the church and apply Bible passages to them, along with sharing how it impacts our lives as well. And of course, there will always be treats.

If you haven’t tried Faith and Life Bible study, maybe you’d like to get in on it now that we are letting God’s word shine on the centuries of Christian life. We meet twice a week (same content at both): Tuesdays 6:30-8:00 PM, and Wednesdays 9:30-11:00 AM, always in the Gathering Place.

SE MN Synod Assembly is being held in Rochester on May 2-3. This year’s theme is “We are Called”: A Glocal Mission Event. Glocal (a combination of the words global and local) is a word which describes the work of this church in local communities and throughout the globe. The synod’s new food insecurity initiative will be a primary focus during this event which will be co-sponsored by ELCA Churchwide Global Mission. Speakers, musicians and workshop leaders will lead voting members into conversation and learning, inviting the community of this church into action on behalf of the hungry.

JesusJesusJesusJesus, Tender Shepherd, Hear Me, Bless Thy little lamb tonight”, Tender Shepherd, Hear Me, Bless Thy little lamb tonight”, Tender Shepherd, Hear Me, Bless Thy little lamb tonight”, Tender Shepherd, Hear Me, Bless Thy little lamb tonight” It is so easy for children to learn while they are young. We can use languages as an example. While we lived in Bogota´, South America, I watched in amazement how the children would speak to one another. They could move from one language to the next with no problem at all. Many important things we learn as children are retained for life. That is why we begin teaching the minute a child is born into the world. How important it is that we should put the best we have before our children! I have been so delighted with how the children have retained the music they have learned over the years. They remember the words and the melodies like it was yesterday. The children, like their grandparents before them, can recall through the music the love the Lord their God has for them. Music can enlist many emotions. Holy Week and Easter is a wonderful time for remembrance of special musical gifts at worship as well as Christmas and many other times of the year. Music is an integral part of expressing our love for our Lord. It is always a wonderful surprise to see how the Holy Spirit can move through the music we sing or play. It is truly a mistake to think that children as well as adults do not enjoy and appreciate the best. Our music is a gift of love!

Overheard on a Lenten Wednesday referring to the smell of burned popcorn in the office: “I knew they were making soup for the soup supper, but it didn’t smell right.” Thanks to Kim, her helpers and the Confirmation youth for making and serving the delicious

choices of soups during the Wednesdays of Lent!

From Southeast Minnesota Synod Office:

As people of faith, God calls us to work together to feed the hungry. Jesus encourages his followers to reach out in love and care to all people. We are partnering together throughout the synod to end food insecurity in southeastern Minnesota. This endeavor will be an area of primary focus over the next six years. How is your congregation currently involved in food- related ministries? Are there new ways you might consider engaging with this critical issue? Our hope is that by working together as a synod, we can truly cause a decline in hunger rates throughout our region. By educating one another about the depth of the issue, creating realistic action plans, strengthening existing networks, and sharing stories of success, we can truly impact change!

“Something to sing about” As I am preparing my newsletter this month, I am sitting looking out the window and it is dreary, cold and rainy. It feels a little bit more like fall than spring, and yet seeing the green grass starting to peek through is very encouraging. Spring is always a welcome season in Minnesota and this year seems to be especially so. I also noticed something else as I peered out the window: a couple of blue jays being playful while they were trying to fight for a crumb. I also noticed that they were singing. I’ve always enjoyed sitting and just “listening” to birds. I find it especially exciting in the spring because it’s a sound I haven’t heard for some time. So I pause and listen…. I have also found them to be rather therapeutic and calming. Often times when we go camping that is my favorite part -- to just sit and listen and I feel like God is communicating with me through them and I often wonder, what must they be saying? They always sound so cheery. So, even when it is cold and rainy and dreary they still find something to sing about.

I think about this in correlation with my life. I for one find it hard sometimes to want to “sing” when my life is a little “dreary”. Sometimes I just want to crawl back into bed. But, I know full well that those are the times I need God the most. However, I am sort of stubborn and well…admittedly, sometimes try to figure things out on my own. Jeremiah 33:3 says.…”Call to ME, and I will

answer you; I will tell you wonderful and marvelous things that you know nothing about” ……. You mean to tell me I don’t have to figure stuff out on my own? How encouraging!

So, as the bird sits and chirps in the tree and I stand and listen and feel peace and wonder…. I contemplate on God and his creation. I know that He desires that attentiveness with Him; to feel that peace, to feel that wonder, and to call on Him. Maybe, just maybe He sends the birds to sing at a time in my day when He knows I need Him the most and to be still and just listen. Hmmm… interesting concept. Something to sing about!
