Thefarmhassupportedatotalof42familiesinthelocalitythroughpassonheifers(17families)andchicken(25families)thisiscontributingtowardsimprovingtheirlivelihoods

Therearethreepedigreecowsonthefarm,2calveddownduringthisperiodandtheothertwoarein-calf.

Fivegiltsfurrowedto37piglets,thereare12growers,4fattenersandoneboar.Atotalof53pigs.Thesalesduringtheperiodinclude1boar,1growerand4piglets.Thecentre

servesasasourceofpigsforfarmersinthelocality.

Thereareatotalof800broilers,16Layers,24localHens,8Geeseand25Ducks.Onelocalsupermarkethasgiventhefarmatendertosupply100dressedchickensweekly,this

earnedthemKshs.38,000sincetheystartedsupplying.Theysold6Geese,4ducksand

localchickenearningKsh.33,600.

Lastseasontheyplantedmaizeon4Acresoflandusinglargelymanurefromthecowsandpigs,andharvested100bags.Themaizeisworthksh.337,500atthecurrentrate.The

farmalsoharvested10bagsofgroundnuts,6bagsofbeans,5bagsofsoyabeansand

indigenousvegetablessomearestillinstore.Thislongrainseasontheyhaveplanted

Maize,FingermilletandVegetables.

TheBananaplantationisdoingwelltheynowhave400stemsgrowing. TheyhavealsoplantedsweetPotatoforthevinestobeusedtofeedthepigs,andcows

whiletheroottubersfortheirownconsumption.

AboutthreeHundredEucalyptustreeshavebeenplantedonthefarmforfutureuseandsoilconservation.

Lastyear2012thesistersopenedaPrimaryschoolandthisyeartheyenrolledpupilsinclassone.Thisschoolwasbuiltusingtheksh.99,250whichwasthegoldentalentaward

fromHeiferInternationaltoSisterBeatriceOdinyuasastartupcapital.

Oneofthegroupsthatreceivedpassonofheifers,Kolpinggroupnetworkedandgotatotalof12dairyGoatsandonebreedingbuckfromKAPAPprogramme.

TheinvolvementinseriousAgriculturehasimprovedtherelationshipwiththeCommunityaroundandhasalsogiventhenadifferentlookonFarmingasabusiness.Thefarmhas

createdemploymenttothecommunitybothskilledandunskilled.

CHALLENGES

TherewastoomuchrainatthestartofthecurrentrainyseasonattheendofMarch.Thewaterdestroyedsomecropsonthefarm.

Inflation-HighincreaseofFarminputsandotherrelatedmaterials. Politicalinstabilityinthecountryhasalsoaffected,sometimesitisdifficulttoaccessfarm

inputsi.e.Animalfeeds,Medicineandotherservicescrucialtothefarm.

Graceandcompassionfarmhasbeeninplacesincetheyear1995,whentheSistersthoughtit

goodtoproducetheirownfoodontheFarm.Butduetopoorfarmingmethodsandlackofskills

thesistersnevergotgoodyieldsfromtheFarm.ThisforcedthemtocontinueBuyingfood

materialfromthemarketandtoincurunnecessaryexpensesastheyhadtopaytheworkerson

theFarm.Thiswentonfor10goodyearsoflossandfrustration.

Intheyear2005thesisterin-chargeoftheFarmsoughttheadviceoftheoftheAgricultural

officersatthedivisionalandDistrictlevelwhowillinglygavethesisterthenecessaryhelpshe

neededandfirstwasforhertodisposeoffthe10cowsthatwereonthefarmandgetagood

breedandalsoonhowtousetheManureforsoildevelopmentandgoodyields.The10cowsgave

amaximumof7litersperdayandtheyhadundergoneinbreedingwhichmeantnothinggood

couldcomeoutofthem.WiththeskillfuladviceandknowledgeoffarmingasaBusinesstheSister

wasnowlookingforwardtogreatstepshewasabouttomake.WewereintouchwithStichting

OudinAfrikainTheNetherlandsthroughHenkVanStokkomwhohadvisitedthefarmandsaw

theplightandhesowantedtohelpuscomeoutofthatpoorwaysofFarmingmethodsinorder

thatwecouldimproveourlivelihoodhaveFoodsecurity,betterNutritionandincometoenable

usgivebetterservicestotheoldpersonsthatwetakecareof,givetheoldpeoplethebasicneeds,

adignifiedlifeandatthesunsetoftheirlivesreceiveadecentburial.

WithFinancialsupportinplacethesistersnowneededtheknowledgeandskillsonfarmingasa

business.SoHenkintroducedustoHeiferInternationalKenyaandSendACoworganization.The

Heiferrepresentativevisitedthefarmandstartedthenecessarypreparationsforadairyunit

construction,Farmmanurepreparation,Kitchengardening,Dairykeeping,Pigrearing,Poultry

keepingandallsortsoftrainingthatwecouldgetasbeginners.Whenthetraingperiodwasover

wehad5AcresofNapiergrassalreadyestablishedonourlandandtheKictchengardenwasalso

inplace.Beforethecowsarrivedweweregiven6hensandacocktostartpoultrykeepingandto

passitonalsotootherfarmers.After6monthswemanagedtopass-on12hensandtwococksto

theKolpingfamilieswhosincehavemanagedtopass-onto26familiesandhavealsocarriedouta

passbacktothesisters.AtthisstageofpreparationonesisterwastakentotheBaraka

AgriculturalcollegeforgeneralAgricultureandhassincebeenonthefarmtomakesurethatthe

sistersvisionofhavingsustainablefoodsecurity,betternutrition,improveourenvironmentand

manyothersisachieved.

Intheyear2007Julywereceivedour5pedigreefreshianheifersallincalfindifferentstagesof

pregnancy.InthesameyearDecemberthefirstheifercalveddowntoaheifercalfandtheothers

followedshortlyafterandthatmeantplentyofMilkwasavailable.Wehadenoughforthesisters,

theoldpeopleandthesurpluswassoldtotheHotelsaroundandtheneighbors.Fromthecows

wereceivedthecowdungwhichweusedinmakingfarmyardmanurewhichhelpedtotransform

ourfarmfrompooryieldingfieldstomoreproductivelandeversince.Ourlandwasrockyandin

fewmonthswehadatremendouschange,wherebythesoilhadgrownandwasmoresofterthan

before.Wenowplantedallourvegetablesandothercropsorganicallyforbetternutritionand

healthyfeeding.Westartedreceivingpeoplefromfarandneartocomeandlearnaboutwhatwe

weredoing.

TheHeiferInternationalofficersalsoorganizedforuslearningtourstootherfarmersandother

farmersalsovisitedourfarmandtheystilldouptodate.Theyleavethefarmmoreedifiedand

happytogohomeandstartoneortwoprojectoftheirown.Intheyear2008wewereblessed

withthegiftof8pigs,2Boarsand6Giltswhichwerealreadyin-pig.TheprojectflourishedwithinmonthswehadmanypigsforsaleandsoHeiferknowingtheirworkwelltheyintroducedustothe

Farmerschoiceaninstitutionthatbuysfattenersandbaconersfromfarmersandmakesausages,

baconandhamforinternationalmarket.Sowemanagedtosellourpigswithoutsomany

strugglesandimproveourincomeuptothismoment.Afterthesaleofthepigswethoughtitwas

betterifweinvestedinotherprojectsandsowebought300stemsofbananasandestablisheda

bananaplantationwhichdidverywellthenandeventoday,wealsoconstructedabiogasplant

whichhashelpedthesisterstocutdownonthecostoffuel,westartedatailoringprojectwhere

wemakedifferentitemsforthechurchandschoolsandourowndresses.Wecreatedjobsfor

morethan20localpeopleandtrainedthemalsointhesamesoastohelpthempracticeintheir

ownfarmstoo.

Intheyear2010wemanagedtopassonFiveheiferstoagroupof5familiesKnownasKolping

familyKenyawhosincethenhavemadeabigdifferenceintheirfamiliesandhavealreadyhad5

pass-onswhichmeansallthetenfamilieshavealreadygoteachacowandtheyhaveadopted

somepoorpeopletheysupport.Intheyear2011wemanagedtohaveasecondpass-onandthat

was8heifersgivento8familiesincludingtheOUDVolunteerswhobelongedtothegood

shepherdgroupandthecowwasgiventoMr.T.KennedyLangiriasthefirstfamilytoownitinthe

groupofsevenmembers.OthergroupsthatbenefitedwereNyotaandNanaka.
