The average age of pet cats is rising, thanks toadvances in healthcare and husbandry. Cats overthe age of 7 are considered to be mature, and catsover the age of 12 are referred to as senior - so atthe age of 15 cats will have been ‘old’ for over halfof their lifetime – and about half of the pet cats in the UK are now over 7! Royal Canin has recognisedthis, and realised that older cats are still individual, with each and every one needing nutrition tailored to their particular needs.

Ageing is a progressive, irreversible process, and is really amanifestation of the general wear and tear on the body that occursover a lifetime. As cats age, they develop different sensitivities sotheir specialised nutrition must be adapted to help support the bodyand maintain normal function.

The Royal Canin diets for the mature cat are Sterilised +7, Outdoor+7 and Indoor +7 – clearly, these lifestyles continue to havediffering nutritional needs, and yet we must start to consider thenutritional changes that come with ageing. All of the +7 dietscontain the Youth Complex, an exclusive combination ofantioxidants and polyphenols to help maintain vitality and tosupport the body through the first signs of ageing. But the dietscontinue to be formulated specifically with benefits for cats withdifferent lifestyles, whether this is weight control in the Sterilised +7,skin and coat health in the Indoor +7 or maintaining activity in theOutdoor +7.

Another important concern is that of kidney health, as kidneydisease is unfortunately such a common problem in older cats andcan go undetected for some time. Regular health checks at the vetare important to pick up common conditions such as kidney diseaseas early as possible. And in the meantime, all Royal Canin diets forcats over 7 years old have reduced levels of phosphorous to helpsupport kidney health.

You may find that your feline senior citizens start to sleep more andslow down, and so it is important to keep an eye on their waistlines. The inclusion of certain nutrients such as essential fatty acids, glucosamine and chondroitin will help to support bone and jointhealth in these older cats, helping to keep them mobile and active.

Another important consideration, especially for those cats over 12years of age, is appetite. Appetite can start to deteriorate with ageand, in addition, many older cats may have dental sensitivities too,so a kibble specifically designed for the senior cat is reallybeneficial. The Ageing +12 diet has a special ‘pillow’ kibble, witha crunchy outside and a soft inside, for maximum palatability.

As the ageing process occurs much more rapidly over the age of12, and there are more visible signs, the Ageing +12 diet also has nutrients with additional benefits for the senior cat. High levelsof the amino acid tryptophan, for example, can help supporthealthy brain function, which can start to decline in senior cats.Energy levels are also optimised to help maintain body condition,as senior cats often struggle to maintain their body weight in theirold age.

It really is important to ensure that mature and senior cats aregetting the right nutrition to support them throughout the ageingprocess, whatever their lifestyle. Feeding the Royal Canin diet mostsuited to your individual older cat can help to maintain their healthand vitality, helping them to grow old gracefully.

Meet the Team

Nicholas Chapman - Garden of England MemberCo-Opted as Rules and Regulations Officer

I live in Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire, am engaged to Rachel and wewill be getting married In 2013.I lived in Spain when I was a toddler and speak Spanish, returningto the UK when I was 6 years old. I attained 16 GCSE at bothschool and college. Am at present working as Assistant Managerfor a Car Parts Company in Welwyn, HertsCats seem to have been part of my life since I was little, mygrandmother has been breeding as long as I have known, and thenmum had Rag Dolls from Patriarca Cattery, And now has Bengals.I am not in a position to have cats myself but help mum with thecats at home (don’t know how she will manage when I eventuallymove out !!!),I am really enjoying my time stewarding at shows around thecountry – you do not always have to have a cat to be involved withFB and to that end I am really looking forward to the challenge ofbeing Rules and Regulations Officer, I will take the position veryseriously and to the best of my ability.

Louise Mitchell Breeding Health and Welfare Commission Chair

I started breeding and showing Burmillas in 1998 under my FIFeprefix Gem's and since then have enjoyed making many goodfriends at Shows. It is great to be able to share problems andsuccesses with other breeders. I prefer the open judging at FB Shows.I am very interested in all aspects of cat welfare and take everyopportunity I can to keep up to date and increase my knowledge inthis area. I have found the NBA lectures by Dr Susan Little particularlyinformative. It is so important to be able to advise new ownerscorrectly of the best ways to ensure the health, welfare and happinessof their new kitten. I want my cats to receive only the best of care andI have had my vet visit my small cattery annually to make sure I ammaintaining it in the best way possible.I adore all aspects of cat breeding and am never happier when alitter of kittens is due or running around. I only have about three littersa year to ensure all the kittens and mother get enough attention andare properly socialized.Burmilla genetics are complex and challenging but I enjoy learningabout this and it is essential to good breeding practice to have aworking knowledge of your chosen breeds genetics. I have two studcats.I am very committed to co operating with other Burmilla breedersabroad and through importing and exporting ensure that our linesare as healthy as possible.

I am the founding Secretary of the FIFe Burmilla Breed Council.I am lucky that Burmillas are a very healthy breed but make sureall my breeding cats are tested for PKD and FIV/FLV as routine. The health and happiness of my cats is the most important thing forme, wether they win at Shows is just a bonus.I have really enjoyed working with the other members of theBH&WC this last year and thank them for their time and valuedhelp in dealing with the many and varied enquiries and requestswe have as a Commission received.

Breeding Health & Welfare IssuesBurmese Genetic TestsBurmese Head Defect

A recessive mutation that causes a congenital craniofacial defect inBurmese cats has been discovered by the Lyons Feline GeneticsResearch Laboratory at UC Davis. The mutation affects function of agene significant for facial development.A scientific manuscript forthe publication of the work is in preparation. The Burmese Head Defect mutation is common in the Contemporarylines of Burmese in the United States. One copy of the mutation doesnot cause the craniofacial defect but may produce a shortenedfacial structure (brachycephaly). Studies are underway to determineif cats that have one copy or no copies of the mutation can beidentified just by facial type. Cats with two copies of the mutationhave the severe craniofacial defect that is incompatible with life. The VGL offers the DNA test for Burmese Head Defect to assistowners and breeders in identifying affected and carrier cats. Thetests are done with DNA collected from buccal swabs thus avoidinginvasive blood collection. Breeders can use these tests as a tool toavoid breeding carriers together which would produce 25%affected offspring.

Visit the VGL website for more details at:-http://www.vgl.ucdavis.edu/services/cat/catswab.php

NOTE: If you quote the code “FBRIT001“ to thelaboratory, you will receive a 20% discountfrom the prices quoted!

Showing your cat in EuropeNow that the Pet travel scheme has been changed in the UK, it ismuch easier to travel to European shows with your cats.Having recently attended a FIFe show in Paris with our cats, I cansay with absolute certainty that it is very easy to doYou need to have your cat vaccinated against the usual diseases asfor shows in the UK plus the Rabies Vaccine. This now only needsto be done 21 days before travelling and no blood test is required. This is far better than the old system where you had to wait for sixmonths after the Vaccination. It now means you can decide who totake, have the vaccination done and enter the show.Travel can either be via the Tunnel or by Ferry. (Travel by air fromthe UK is not easy and can work out expensive) It is not possible tofly your cat into the UK in the cabin of the aircraft so they have togo as cargo which most people I have spoken to, do not like theidea of)The Ferry prices seem to be cheaper but if you shop at Tesco’s andcollect their points, you can swap them for Vouchers for theEurotunnel which makes it much cheaper.Entering the shows is the same as in the UK (although you will notbe able to leave it as late as in the UK) Entry forms need to besigned by the Secretary of your club to validate that you are amember and that the cat is eligible for the class entered. The shows we have entered have been on line entries which havebeen simple to complete and a confirmation was sent back within24 hours. Payment is usually by Bank Transfer and the club hosting

the show will send you the bank details when they confirm yourentry. Payment is in Euro’s and some banks allow this via internetbanking now which makes life easier. Many people are now looking to enter shows in Europe and withExhibitors from Europe now attending our shows in the UK, thereare exciting times ahead as we now can truly be part of the FIFeand compare our cats to some of the best in Europe.

Exhibitors from the UK are planning to attend a show inZedelgem, Belgium on September 23rd and we would be happyfor you to come along with us. Zedelgem is only 45 minutesfrom Calais so is probably the closest European show for us inthe UK

The World Cat ShowA number of intrepid (or maybe stupid)exhibitors are also planning to attend theWorld Cat Show in Croatia. After thewonderful time everyone had last yearstarting with a “road trip” and then majorfun at the show and in the eveningsafterwards, we thought it would be agood idea to do it all again.

Details of the World show can be foundon the FIFe website as above but pleasefeel free to ask any questions if you wouldlike know more about it or maybe enterthe show.
