A dinosaur is about to become extinct and its passing is leading to improved service to Christian Healthcare Ministries members. We’re replacing our computer software with a system that gives Christian Healthcare Ministries’ staff members a faster, easier, and more efficient information flow. This translates into rapid response for CHM members. “In the 21st century, speed and access to information are key to excellent service,” said the Rev. Howard Russell, CHM executive director. “Our old computer program served us well, but compared to the technology available today it just wasn’t doing the job for our members.” Russell said that upgrades in the new system, among others, are: • Employees can access information from many bits of information, even down to the level of what a name sounds like. Any information that is part of the CHM system is capable of becoming a search field. • The new program speeds work on needs submitted to the ministry for sharing. The computer program applies the logic of the ministry’s Guidelines to each medical bill. Employees will review each entry, but at a minimum the result will be faster consideration fairly and evenly applied with respect to our Guidelines. • Members will receive notice that need requests have arrived at the ministry. If more bills are sent at a later date they will be acknowledged via a notice that will list all new bills as well as those previously received. The notice will explain in detail what bills are eligible for sharing. Christian Healthcare Ministries · May 20082A LOOK INSIDE MY HEART by reverend howard russell

Reverend Howard Russell

Executive Director,Christian Healthcare Ministries

Turning a new page for the Prayer PageThis month, a new page is turning for thePrayer Page.

In this newsletter you will find theimproved Prayer Page. And it’s a passion ofmy heart.

Through the Prayer Page, people with pre-existing medical conditions that don’t meetour ministry’s Guidelines receive financialhelp and personal encouragement fromfellow CHM members.

The Prayer Page is another item in a longlist of attributes that separates us fromhealth insurance. This ministry is nothealth insurance. We do not operate as aninsurance company does and do not want tobe thought of in those terms.

CHM is a voluntary cost-sharing ministryof believers in Christ, banding together tomeet each other’s needs.

Pre-existing conditions are not included innormal sharing according to our Guidelinesbecause the cost of trying to meet themthrough regular monthly financial giftswould, quite literally, swamp us.

However, these needs are real. They affectpeople.

Under normal health insurance, people withpre-existing conditions are simply out of

luck. Out in the cold. Left in the lurch.

Not so for CHM members. Our members,as they feel led, contribute financial giftsabove their regular monthly gift tomembers whose names and medicalconditions appear on the Prayer Page.

These above-and-beyond gifts are helpfulbecause they make lives better. These giftsare thoughtful because they are given freelyand voluntarily. These gifts are Christlikebecause they reflect a true desire on the partof Christians to carry each other’s burdens.

The generosity displayed through PrayerPage giving is moving and miraculous.Thousands of dollars are contributedmonthly to Prayer Page needs. We take careto verify the validity of each Prayer Pagerequest. We have the same verificationprocedures for Prayer Page needs asrequired for regular sharing.

Even beyond the financial support, many ofyou send letters and cards of encouragementto individuals listed on the Prayer Page.We regularly receive notes from peoplelisted on the Prayer Page telling us howmuch the encouragement of fellowChristians and CHM members meansduring times of medical or financial stress.

The new Prayer Page will have a monthlycover story spotlighting a member who has

been helped by this valuable ministry.

A bonus of the new format is that morepeople can be listed on the Prayer Page.Space limitations in the monthly newslettersaw us routinely having to rotate a dozen ormore people off the page every month. Thatpressure is alleviated through our newapproach.

Reading the Prayer Page is an experience inGod’s grace. You’ll see represented in printnames of people from many backgroundsand from many states in our nation.Sometimes the financial help needed isquite small; sometimes bills amount to tensof thousands or even hundreds of thousandsof dollars.

In each case, Christians are bringing theirneeds and their prayers before the Body ofChrist. In each case, other Christians aregiven the opportunity to respond.

Please take a close look at our new PrayerPage. If you’ve never needed it, somedayyou might. If you’ve never contributed to aperson on the page, maybe you’ll want to do so.

CHM is grateful to God to be able toprovide this service to our members, to helpthose in need of help and to use the PrayerPage as a vehicle to glorify God and serveHis people.

Member overcomes life-threatening pancreatitisCHM and Brother’s Keeper respond to share medical bills

Member Rev. Lynda Deniger in 1999 hadwhat she describes as a “brush with thedeath angel.”

Spared by God’s grace, her family wassupported in meeting its huge financialbills by Christian Healthcare Ministriesand the Brother’s Keeper program.

Lynda, of Arbita Springs, La., and herhusband, Ron, were returning from

vacation when they stopped at her parents’house for the weekend.

“In the early morning hours I beganexperiencing the worst pain of my life,” shesaid. “Several hours later I was cryinghysterically.” Lynda’s sister, a nurse who alsowas in town, insisted on taking her to theemergency room.

Deniger (continued from page 2)

Blood tests revealed that Lynda’s triglyceridecount and cholesterol levels were off thechart. Even so, medical staff initiallyexpected a recovery time of several days.

Instead, by the next morning Lynda wasadmitted to the intensive care unit. Doctorstold her family that the next 12 to 24 hourswere critical - and there was little chanceLynda would survive.

Her body swelled due to high toxicity levelsas her pancreas shut down and digestiveenzymes ate into the pancreatic tissue. Herheart raced so fast doctors feared she wouldhave a heart attack. She was in danger ofkidney failure and of her lungs filling withfluid. She received morphine, insulin shots

and a feeding tube that cost $200 per day.

“I don’t remember much of my ordeal in theICU,” Lynda said. “Hallucinations propelledme into a world that seemed real but oftenwas bizarre and terrifying.”

Doctors suggested that Lynda be transferredto a hospital in New Orleans to be examinedby a pancreatic specialist. Because she was aself-pay patient, the hospital demanded a$50,000 deposit to admit her. As Lynda’sfather tried to get the money together, laterthat same day the hospital increased thedeposit to $300,000.

“It didn’t take much to figure out that was aclosed door,” Lynda said. “My family had nochoice but to wait, watch and pray.”

She later learned that believers around theworld were praying for her, including theattending surgeon—a Christian—whovisited her daily. Christian music playedcontinuously in her room and her motherlater told Lynda that she saw her daughter’sarms raised up to God several times. “At onepoint I looked at my mother and said,‘Mom, I’ve never been this sick in my life, but I am going to make it!’”

Lynda spent nearly four of her six weeks inthe hospital in ICU.

Nine weeks after she and Ron had left for

vacation, Lynda returned homein a drastically weakened statethat caused constant pain.Following four months ofrecovery, she was again admittedto the hospital with a high fever. She underwent major surgery toclean out infected pancreaticcysts. After six more months ofrecovery, she was diagnosed withdiabetes.

“It was an incredible ordeal, onethat I should not have survived,” she said.“Many miracles took place during that time, not the least of which was the help thatCHM and Brother’s Keeper provided.”

Lynda’s medical bills totaled $231,070. Shereceived $58,098 in provider bill reductions.Fortunately, Lynda was a member ofBrother’s Keeper, the CHM program thatassists with medical needs exceeding the$125,000 limit per illness specified in theGuidelines. CHM and Brother’s Keepermembers shared her $172,972 in remainingbills.

“Thanks to CHM and Brother’s Keeper, myhusband and I were not wiped outfinancially,” she said.

believe that no matter thecircumstance, God has a plan.

“In Jeremiah 29:11, we areassured that God’s plans for usare beneficial and that He has afuture for us,” she said.

“Each of us was created for apurpose and with aresponsibility to make every daycount. Our daily prayer shouldbe, ‘Teach us to number ourdays and recognize how few theyare; help us to spend them as weshould’” (Psalm 90:12).

Anger and angina (which refers to chestpain) come from the same Latin root word. They’re closely related scientifically as well.

Researchers at University College inLondon evaluated 34 men who survivedheart attacks more than a year earlier.Fourteen of the men acknowledged thattheir heart attacks occurred within twohours of becoming emotionally stressed(arguments with neighbors, sadnessrelating to a sick or deceased relative, etc.).

The other 20 men denied any emotional

distress proximate to their heart attacks. Each participant completed a battery ofmentally challenging tests designed to bestressful. Afterwards, blood pressures andblood samples were taken. The scientistslooked to see if factors such as elevatedblood pressure and clotting, which areknown to be associated with risk of heartattack, were different between the twogroups.

In the men whose heart attacks wereimmediately preceded by stress, systolicblood pressure and heart rate took longerto return to baseline (thus placing the

individuals at greater risk forheart problems). In addition, blood samples in those mendemonstrated double theamount of clumped plateletsbound to immune cells ascompared with normal levels(clumped platelets can fosterheart attack inducing clots).

The control group menshowed no such change inresponse to the stressful tests.

Healthy babiesRecently, I received the following request.

My wife and I found out that we are going tohave a baby. I was wondering if you could give ussome information and tips on steps we can take tohelp make the baby as healthy as possible.

Here is my response:

“Thank you for writing and for caringenough to give your unborn child the bestshot at optimum health. As I ponderedwhat I have learned over the years abouthow to improve the well-being of infants,12 main keys came to mind:

1. Live a biblical lifestyle that keepssexual activity within the protectivebounds of marital fidelity. That shouldbe obvious. Many diseases, includingseveral that can be transmitted to thebaby (such as HIV, HPV, gonorrhea andchlamydia), can be totally avoided byfollowing this principle.

2. Abstain from drugs, alcohol andtobacco. Again, this is probably not aconcern of yours. But be aware thatalcohol, drugs and tobacco can stunt anunborn child’s growth and can cause birthdefects, withdrawal, and a lifelongincreased sensitivity to pain.

3. Eat healthy. Avoid junk food devoid ofkey nutrients. Eat regular, nutritious mealscomplete with whole grains, fresh fruits andvegetables. That will give the baby vitalnutrients he or she needs and will reduceyour risk of developing gestational diabetesand preeclampsia.

4. For the same reasons, take prenatalvitamins.

5. Stay physically fit. It’s great for yourheart and lungs, optimizes the oxygen andblood flow to the baby and helps youprepare for childbirth, perhaps the mostathletically challenging event of your life.

6. Walk in the Spirit, which producesthe benefit of a heart filled with love, joyand peace. This helps ensure lower stresshormone levels (cortisol and adrenaline),which place a woman at greater risk of

miscarriage and other detrimental effects.

7. Choose a normal delivery (versuscaesarean) if prudent. While not alwayspossible, normal delivery has a lower risk ofa variety of complications, especially for themother.

8. Avoid unnecessary antibiotics. Theynot only kill “bad” bacteria that might causean infection, they also obliterate many of the“friendly” bacteria that reside in the gut. These bacterial allies help digest food, manufacture certain vitamins (such as B12

and biotin) and serve as a first line of defenseagainst harmful bacteria and yeast.

They also protect us from a number of otherproblems. Antibiotic use tends to generate avicious cycle of infection, antibiotics, yeastovergrowth and repeat infections, for whichantibiotics are given again.

I have personally seen and successfullytreated many children who developedcomplications—such as eczema, cradle cap, chronic diarrhea, chronic congestion, earinfections, and asthma—that cleared upwhen the intestinal flora (bacteria) wererestored through probiotics (“friendlybacteria” supplements) and Nystatin®.Nystatin is an antifungal commonly givenfor oral thrush, a common infection ininfants. Any child with a yeast diaper rash islikely a good candidate for this treatment.

9. Breastfeed. This is the single mostimportant physical preventive measure thatyou can take for your child’s health. Indeveloping countries breastfeeding is a toppriority for the World Health Organization(WHO) toward the goal of preventinginfant disease and death. Despiteimprovements in baby formula, there isnothing more perfectly designed by ourCreator as your child’s food than mother’sbreast milk. Compared to formula-fedbabies, those who are breast-fed haveconsiderably fewer infections and problemswith diarrhea, asthma, allergies, eczema and

other skin ailments.

10. Keep well-baby check-ups. Theseappointments ensure the baby achievescertain developmental milestones anddetect problems early, when they are mostcorrectible.

11. Practice good hygiene to reducethe child’s exposure to infections. I’mnot a big fan of nurseries and day carecenters. In fact, I’ve long referred to themas virus factories because manyparticularly dangerous infections arecontracted in such environments. To avoidgerms in the church nursery, we taughtour children at a very young age to sitquietly in church. That’s where they havebeen all their lives, and they have had

very few infections to show for it.

12. Spiritually guard your child throughprayer and protection. We live in a worldinfested with the sickness of sin andchildren often are the target. I am convincedthat our spiritual enemy specifically targetschildren to harm them emotionally, morallyor spiritually early in their lives. Diligenceand accountability are essential until theyare able to stand on their own and protectthemselves outside your “nest.”

I hope that you find these suggestionshelpful and encouraging. They are not amagic formula that ensures a healthy child.Keep your faith in Christ and may His graceand peace abide with you as you raise yourchild in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.”

Moms (and dads)-to-be should know about CHM’smaternity programDo you know any young couples planningon starting a family? Tell them aboutChristian Healthcare Ministries’ maternityprogram.

The CHM maternity services are offered tomembers at no additional cost; nomaternity enrollment is required. CHMmembers voluntarily share eligiblematernity costs up to $125,000 perpregnancy. The program includes pre-natalcare, delivery, home births, midwives, postnatal care and birth complications formother and child.

The maternity program is a majoradvantage for young families. The averagecost of giving birth to a healthy baby in ahospital is between $5,000 and $10,000.C-section deliveries are usually twice as much.

“I believe in the concept of Christianscaring for one another and I think CHM isa wonderful program,” said member andnew mother RebeccaVogel of Helenville,Wis. Some bills for thebirth of Rebecca’s son,Joseph, were recentlyshared by CHMmembers; remainingbills are in process forsharing.

The Rev. HowardRussell, CHM executivedirector, said thematernity program isone of the best optionsavailable to youngcouples just starting outor for others who mayalready have childrenand want to increasetheir joy by adding totheir family.

“Psalm 127 says thatchildren are a heritage

and reward from the Lord,” Russell said.“However many children God gives yourfamily, we at CHM want you to know thatother Christians are standing by to helpshoulder the cost of bringing them safelyinto the world.”

Here are some tips for using the CHMmaternity program:

1. Join CHM (or encourage someoneyou know to join) at least 300 daysbefore the expected due date so billswill be eligible for sharing.

2. Obtain medical care as soon as youknow you’re pregnant.

3. Ask for an estimate of charges onletterhead of your clinic or hospital anddoctor. These charges are often bundled asa one or two-day stay (sometimes called a“Stork Package” or “global fee”) and aresignificantly less expensive than beingadmitted to a facility when it’s time to

give birth.

4. Submit the estimate of charges andbills to CHM immediately followingyour first doctor visit. Early submissionspeeds bill sharing. Notify the CHMoffice immediately if your health careprovider sets a time limit for reducedcharges (seven months is common.)

5. Any charge (lab, sonogram, etc.)incurred after the original estimate issubmitted should be sent to the CHMoffice as an “add-on” to the initialamount. Add-on and original bills willbe simultaneously presented for sharing.

Russell encourages members to let familyand friends know what CHM offers tofamilies of different sizes, locations, andcircumstances.

“If you are a couple planning to have

Perceptions of marriageand childrenToday, 36.8 percent of U.S. births are to unmarried women, up from28 percent in 1990 and 5.3 percent in 1960, per the Pew ResearchCenter. In 2007, the typical unmarried mother was more likely tobe white than black, to be an adult instead of a teenager and almostas likely to be living with the child’s father as not.

The decline in marriage rates (50 percent today versus 60 percent in1970) is partly responsible for these types of births. Another reasonis the changing opinion on the purpose of marriage. Some 65percent of Americans say marriage is about the mutual happinessand fulfillment of two adults, while 23 percent believe it’s abouthaving kids and seven percent say it is both.

In 1960, 65 percent of Americans thought that having children wasCourtesy Saurage Research “Key Findings” newsletter

These letters represent what you who participate in CHM areaccomplishing for each other and for the cause of Christ.

You, through your collective and faith-based sharing and support, makethis ministry possible. We are privileged to serve you. We are privileged toserve Him.

– Rev. Howard Russell

Dear Christian Healthcare Ministries:

We are so grateful for members’ help insharing our medical bills. God has blessed usand we were able to pay more on our billswith our own money than we thoughtpossible. Therefore, we want to donate thedifference of $7,504 to CHM so more peoplecan receive help with their bills.

We really appreciate this ministry.

God bless,

Dennis & Irene RahnThree Forks, MT

Dear Christian Healthcare Ministries:

Greetings! I recently switched myparticipation level from Gold to Silver. I hadsome questions and concerns about doingthat and shared my concern with DonnaGreer in the CHM Needs Processingdepartment.

It was a joy to talk with Donna. Sheencouraged me to follow God’s wishes inmaking this change; I planned to give thedifference in my monthly gift amount to astruggling family who recently lost theirfather.

I have been a CHM member since 1995 andnever submitted a medical need because Iwas insured by my employer. I always tellpeople about Christian Healthcare Ministriesand about the money I have saved (andmoney CHM saves members) by asking forbill reductions. Many people do not knowabout the ministry.

I want to thank Donna for her help. I keepthe staff and members in my prayers each day.

God is so good to us.

Sincerely,

Nancy GordonAvilla, IN

Dear Christian Healthcare Ministries:

I recently received checks for my medicalbills and wanted to let you know that Iappreciate it very much!

Sincerely,

James BoyerEast Berlin, PA

Dear Christian Healthcare Ministries:

I just wanted to thank you for your help insharing some medical bills I acquired afteraccidentally cutting my finger with a saw.

Although I understood the concept behindCHM, it became much clearer when Iexperienced a medical situation and billsbeyond my ability to handle. God used theBody of Christ working through thisministry to come through for me. Adifficult situation became a livable one.

I am enclosing a check for $467 that wasgiven to me as a gift from a friend. It wasabove and beyond what I needed to pay mybills. I know that CHM will use it to helpsomeone else who really needs it.

With thanksgiving to Christ,

Chris BougieCrown Point, IN

Dear Christian Healthcare Ministries:

We wanted to send a special thank you foryour assistance in sharing our recent medicalbills.

After an emergency gallbladder surgery,Freddie was hospitalized for five days. Thefinancial battle began when we tried to getreductions on the bills that began piling up.The surgeon graciously granted a reductionand agreed to reasonable monthly paymentsfrom us until it was our turn to have CHMmembers share our need.

The hospital required additional paperworkto be filed. We did as they asked and awaitedtheir decision.

To our dismay, the hospital and imagingcompany did not give us a reduction. Eventhough we were making the monthlypayments, the hospital turned our accountover to the internal collection agency andthreatened that our credit would benegatively affected if the bill was not paid infull immediately.

We and CHM made numerous attempts tonegotiate reductions and reasonable monthlypayments, all of which resulted in rejection.

However, the story has a happy ending. CHMmembers shared our bills at the mostopportune time and our burden was relieved.

God bless all of you. Keep up the good work!

Sincerely,

Freddie & Brenda HowellWest Plains, MO

The Christian HealthcareMinistries newsletter and PrayerPage are getting a facelift.

This month’s newsletter is smallerthan it has been for five years.Readers will no longer find thenewsletter’s Prayer Page on pagessix and seven. Instead, the four-page insert you are reading now isthe new space in which PrayerPage needs are listed.

Why are these changestaking place?

The reason for change is toenhance Prayer Page effectivenessand make the ministry easier tounderstand.

The newsletter issmaller in size becausecreating the Prayer Pageas an insert frees up roomfor newsletter content, which offsets thedecrease in size. Also, itmakes the newslettereasier for readers tohandle.

Making the Prayer Pageits own publicationproduces the followingimprovements:

1. All CHM members witheligible Prayer Page needs arelisted each month. Lack ofnewsletter listing space meantmembers’ needs were rotated offprevious issues. One goal ofcreating a new Prayer Page formatis to make it more likely for every

member listed to receive financialgifts each month. This usuallyresults in more consistent monthlypayments to their medicalproviders.

Members will have more detailedexplanations of their situationlisted so readers will have a betteridea of how to pray for andencourage them.

2. There is more room forexplanation of how the PrayerPage works. Many members callthe CHM office wondering howthe Prayer Page works. The newformat answers many of theirquestions in the additional space.

Read the sidebars on pages

one through fourof this insert to learn more.

3. The new Prayer Page formatincludes space for featurearticles: member testimoniesand important Prayer Pageinformation. These items willappear monthly on the insert frontpage.

4. The new format will draw

readers’ attention to PrayerPage needs. All Prayer Pagegiving is voluntary and aboveregular CHM monthly gifts.People with medical needs listedon the Prayer Page depend onreaders’ generous monthly givingto help share their bills. A small

financial gift each monthfrom each membermakes a tremendousdifference to those inneed.

In addition, listedmembers are blessed andthankful to receivereaders’ prayers, cards andnotes of encouragement.

Editor’s note: For information on howthe Prayer Page works, read thesidebars on pages one through four ofthis insert. For questions not addressedhere, call 1-800-791-6225 (ask forthe Prayer Page) or e-mail [email protected].
