WAYS OF SUPERVISION 11TH MEETING IN ESTORIL, PORTUGAL,

    APRIL 9 TO 13, 2003 - REPORT FROM MICHAEL WIESER -

Ways of Supervision was the theme of the Fepto Meeting in Estorial Portugal and more than 50 delegates from 19 European nations came together, Switzerland and Italy formed the biggest group.

We divide our training interest in several fields of supervision:

    □ Clinical □ Educational/Social □ Art/Theatre □ Organisation □ Combination/Encounter

The large group split most of the time. So participants could work intensely in small groups. After a while the small groups shared their findings. We found out that there is a split between cure and care professionals also in supervision.

Renée Oudijk introduced the technique of the "via negativa", that means to start with the worst way to solve a problem and get rid of the fear.

In the large group Pierre Fontaine gave us the view that a supervisor can be as a grandmother, he preferred the term "other vision" instead of supervision.

Marcia Karp suggested dividing the su-pervision field in

    □ Individual □ Team □ Small group and □ Group supervision.

In the workshop with Pierre Fontaine we stated that for direct or live supervision it is important to have a clear contract and

transparency to the patients. Goals of su-pervision are reflection and ethics. Functions of a supervisor are to be an energizer, empathizer, analyzer and artist.

Important issues were burn out, frame, contract, unfinished business and de-rolling. Many questions came from an or-ganisational context like how to work with a co-therapist in supervision.

Pierre Weil, a psychodramatist and pro-fessor of psychology from Brazil, gave a lecture on his work. We were very glad to meet him. He is outstanding in many fields, for instance he won an award of UNESCO for his peace engagement ana we were impressed by his experience and warmth. He told us that he started his study with psychoanalysis by Igor Caruso and took his humanistic part. Out of a fragmentation crisis in society he builds an existential encounter with a sense of life. He called his work Cosmo-drama and de-scribed it as a kind of transpersonal psy-chotherapy. With puppets he showed us an example in psychodrama of the Dao.

For a couple conflict he uses two puppets for each partner. He showed a feminine and a masculine one. Each part is quarrel-ling with the other. More we can find on his homepage: www.pierreweil.pro.br and his International Holistic University Unipeace.

One of the Fepto logo creations 42.5 Training Committee Pierre Fontaine reported: A year ago, in Sofia, we made a good start. FEPTO members discussed in small groups and produced the first proposal of minimum standards - 720 hours of practice. The committee consisted of Dorothy Langley, Galabina Tarashoeva, Jasna Veljkovic, Jörg Bürmeister, Jutta Fürst, Manuela Maciel, Nifont Dol- gopolov and Pierre Fontaine. Today we are able to present it to the Executive and the General Assembly to be voted upon.

With definitions - because we can not e.g., vote on standards for practice or for theory hours if we do not agree on the definition.

With minimal quantitative standards (hours of train-ing). With minimal qualitative standards for admission and certification procedures This went through an intensive process in 3 steps

At first the level of the Committee. There was an important collection of ideas. Three times a synthesis was made and the suggestions discussed by e-mail with the participation of our chairperson, Judith Teszary Secondly the level of the Council. In October a pro-posal was sent to the Council members and dis-cussed by them in November. A report of this Lon-don meeting with the advises of the Board was sent to the committee members and some changes were made. The third level was FEPTO members. In January a text was published in FEPTO News and sent to all members who were asked for reactions, but from the answers received, it was not necessary to alter the proposal. We announced the vote on the different points by e-mail. Every one received a copy in their G.A. folder

A vote was taken by hand raising and the minimal standard was approved. For 40 - Against 0 - Abstain 1.

42.6 European Affairs Pierre Fontaine reported: last month I met some leading EAP ( European Association for Psychotherapy) members in Paris at the publication of a book. They told me their difficulties when psychodramatists ask for accreditation as psy-chotherapists. Psychodrama is not a member, so they have to be evaluated by other orientations, i.e. gestalt therapists, but they do not know our training standards. This situation presents a problem psychodramatists who wish to be recognized and a problem for the status of psychodrama. So my wish was to give our standards to these people and also to explore how we can become a member. I remind you that in the EAP there are 3 types of members: 1. Individual psychotherapists 2. National Accrediting Organizations 3. European-Wide Accrediting Organizations for

    every member modality.

Individual members can become an European Cer-tificate Psychotherapy as they become accredited by the National Accrediting Organization on advice of their European-Wide modality.

Two years ago in Grasse the General Assembly was against becoming a member of EAP for several rea-sons.

    • Some important members were against it; • We thought it would have to split our federa-

tion into psychotherapists and non psycho therapists

    • We were internally not ready- we had not European standards:

    • It was not urgent then

Now all these points have changed and I wish to explore in this direction with the help of Renée Qudjic.

Renée Qudjic since 2001 is chair of the Dutch National Accrediting Organization of EAP and so she joined the EAP Meetings in Vienna regularly. There she got tie strong impression that Fepto is not an appropriate place to create an EWAO.

for psychodrama. FEPTO is such a friendly holding organization and EWAO is in a way very bureau-cratic. In order to take responsibility for psychotherapy certification, the organization has to develop strict criteria.

Hans Verdonschot proposed that: the General Assembly approves that the Accrediting Organizations together take action, regarding the EAP in the best interests of the method of psycho-drama psychotherapy, with Renee Oudijk as the rep-resentative of the Council.

    A vote was taken: For 39 - Against 0 - Abstain 0.

42.7 Ethic Committee Maurizio Gasseau reported that the committee had drawn up a draft Code of Ethics which was presented and passed unanimously

    A vote was taken: For 35 - Against 0 - Abstain 0.

    43.0 Any Other Business

Marcia Karp stated that 80 years ago, Moreno sometimes failed to pay his rent to the Association of Female Artists in Vienna, the place he rented for his Stegreif theater performances. The place still belongs to the collective of female artists.

Judith proposed that it would be nice if Fepto would pay the rent for Moreno. Others found it not appropriate to do so. After some discussion Marcia proposed that while there will be a Fepto meeting in Vienna in 2005, Fepto can offer by that occupation the Association a gift of € 300,- to fund a purpose to be chosen in consult with the artists.

FEPTO will pay the rent for Moreno

Stockholm January 2003 At the International Psychotherapy Congress in Vienna there was an excursion to the places where Moreno lived and worked. Among others we had a meeting at May-sedergasse No. 2, the place Moreno rented from the Association of Female Visual Artists for his weekly performances known as Stegreifthea-ter. Anne Schützenberger, Mr. Schindler and Marcia Karp remembered Moreno by telling personal stories about him. There was also an Austrian, Brigitte Marschall (professor in theatre-film and media) who has got scholarship to make research of the theatre aspects of Mo-reno1s work. She has found a picture of a stage design Moreno did which was never published after 1924, the so called "open stage2 I am waiting with interest to take part of her research and hope be permitted to publish some part of it in this news or on FEPTO website.

This Association of Female Artists still exists at the same place and they were kind enough to let us have our meeting at this very legendary place, where it ALL STARTED. After a discussion with the women artists it turned out that Moreno missed paying the rent for some time. I find it a good opportunity for FEPTO to pay the missing sum so the association can write in their cashier book, which they still have: paid. It will be a pleasure to finish at least this unfinished business of Moreno.

    Dear Colleagues, Australia 8th April

I feel very sad to hear of the death of Carl Hollander. I saw him

last year at the World Psychotherapy Council's Congress in Vienna and very glad to see him working once more. Carl came to Australia several times and I remember his workshops well, particularly for paying great attention to scene setting and for his astute ability as a very fine clinician and theorist. He has touched many of us in Australia and given much to those of us who attended his workshops. Many of you will know Carl through his writing, favorites of mine include "Sociometry and Sociatry: Theory and Therapy", "J. L. Moreno, M.D., "His Creative Path" and "A Guide to Auxiliary Ego Development". God bless you Carl. With sincere best wishes, Sue Daniel

A LOGO FOR FEPTO ABOUT SYMBOLS

    BY PIERRE FONTAINE

There was a wish to create a logo for FEPTO, to use as letterhead. In 1996, we tried to symbolize our group and we composed and published a circle with all the known logos of organisations interested in Escope, our organisation before founding FEPTO. We didn't close the circle to say there is always openness and place for members without logo and for new members.

Even if such a circle represents very well our federation, it can only be read in a full page presentation, and not as a little logo on a letter-head. What symbols shall we use when we have to create symbolic logo for FEPTO? We wish to express our European belonging, our Psycho-drama work and perhaps the Federation of organizations. We looked at the logos used by our member associations 1. Europe The European Union has a circle or crown of 12 stars as symbol. But we don't wish to impose this symbol of the E.U to people who are not member of this union. On the Euro banknotes we find always a map

of Western and Central Europe. We proposed to make it large enough to include Eastern Europe and the coast of Israel. Europe can also be symbolized by the goddess Europe with Zeus who approached her in the form of a white bull.

    2. Psychodrama. The Morenian encounter symbol is best known and most utilized. Some other symbols seem derived from it. Usually it is horizontal, but perhaps it can be presented more moving. The scene is another symbol: the Beacon scene with the 3 levels or a simpler or complex scene. There are other symbols for group and theatre (masks) and we find a group of masks.

    3. Federation We tried to represent this federation by inter-linked circles. The link between two circles gives the encounter symbol. It seams not possi-ble to ad the map of Europe.

Different proposals were made with these ideas by Thomas Gilson and presented in Estoril, where the following one was chosen.

Report of the Chairperson Annual report

    for the period April 14th 2002-April 12th 2003

    • FEPTO consists today of 31 Training institutes, 11 Accrediting organisation and 40 Founding members. • The Council since Sofia meeting have had three board meetings, one in Sofia, one in London and one in

Estoril. The council decided to have the meeting in between FEPTO meetings in the cheapest possible place, in this case, London.

    • All council members have been actively participating in the board meetings. In the council meeting we found forms of communications and making decisions by e-mail. We have aimed to be an open and democratic council. Most e-mails have been sent to all council members.

    • This year we had four main goals:

    1. To clarify pervious economic matters as requested by the previous auditor Eduardo Verdu and by the General Assembly

    2. To discuss and prepare suggestions for new requirements for membership 3. To discuss and prepare recommendations for minimal training standards for psychodrama training

in Europe. 4. To create a proposition of Code of Ethics for FEPTO member institutes.

    • The question of a membership in EAP have been raised and discussed in the Council. • Discussed and try to find a fair distribution of scholarships for those institutes or organisations that need

this form of economic support. • The different committees have been very active during the whole year. They have in a fruitful way used the

council members as dialog partners. The first draft of the Committees propositions was brought to the Council meeting in London (November 2nd-4th -2002). The questions were thoroughly discussed by the Council. The committees prepared a proposition to present for our members for voting at the General Assembly in Estoril.

As the chair person of Fepto I have had almost daily with council members. During the year I have had a lively exchange by mail and by phone with the chairs of the committees. I have had 10 meetings with the chair of the Annual meeting Committee (Eva Fahlström) for planning and discuss-ing the program of the Estorial meeting. I have been in contact with the local organizer of the Estoril meeting, Manuela Maciel in order to give her advise and support.

I have promoted the FEPTO idea and exchanged mail and letters with interested people A confirmation letter was sent to the new member institutes and accrediting organisations: Bulgarian Society for Psychodrama and Group Therapy; Association of Finnish Trainers in Moreno Psychodrama MOPSI; Group Psy-choanalytical Psychodrama Association on the bases of Analytical Psychology of C. G. Jung - GAJAP; Psycho-drama Society J. L. Moreno - S.P.J.L.M.; Psychodrama Helvetia - PDH and also a letter to the institute which has not been accepted.

I hope that I have contributed to a good, democratic, non competitive and creative working climate in our organi-sation.

    Mother's Day, 1971

Mother's day is meant to be For children to celebrate Their mother. But I wonder at our ability To turn around All meanings. For I have found No mothers Unless there are children. Who then, Should be honored?

I prefer to celebrate my way: "Thank you son, for having made me a mother and for being so fine a son to me".
