    All about the Knife Show!

    Continued on Page 2

by Wayne GoddardToo Many Knives, Too Little TimeTHE COUNT-DOWNIt was Show closing time, the count-downhad started. Ten, nine, eight, seven, six...."No! I shout, not yet, I need two more days....please, just two more days." But thecountdown continues, five, four, three, two,

one... cheers and sounds of glee ripple acrossthe large room. My disappointment that theShow was over was tempered (softened) thisyear because I had started out on Fridayaccepting the fact that I wouldn't be able tosee it all. I would just have to settle for asmuch as I got done and it worked.

NEW FRIENDS AND CUSTOMERSOne of the best things about the Show eachyear are the new friends and customers thatcome into our lives. The only drawback ofsuch a large Show is that there isn't enoughtime for old friends. I apologize to all those Ionly had time to wave or smile at on my waysomewhere.

A NEW KNIFEWould a knife show be a success if we didn'tcome home with at least one new treasure? Icame home with one new knife. It's an ultrasharp working knife made by Ivan Maras.Ivan is a wood carver who got into making

knives because of his dissatisfaction withcommercial made knives. This knife wasmade to cut and it cuts leather like butter. Thetwo sides of the blade meet at infinity, andthat makes it perfect to have a permanenthome on my sheath making bench. The

narrow blade with the slight belly isthe perfect leather trimming knife. My year-long remodeling, sort it andclean it out project, resulted in therealization that I had more materialsthan I was ever likely to use up.Therefore I didn't buy any materials.

AN INTERNATIONAL SHOWAn indication of the success of theOregon Knife Show is not only thewide range of knives and relatedproducts, but the numerous statesand countries that are represented bytable holders.

Countries include: Japan, SouthAfrica, Italy, Canada, England, and Thailand.

States: Alaska, Arkansas, Arizona, California,Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Iowa,Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky,Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota,Missouri, Montana, North Carolina,Nebraska, New Jersey, New Mexico, Nevada,New York, Oregon, South Carolina,Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia,Washington, Wisconsin, West Virginia andWyoming. That's thirty-five states in case youdidn't count them.

    DEMONSTRATIONS

An important part of the Show and one thatgets the public involved up close and personalare the demonstrations. It was 1983 whenDavid Thompson did the first forgingdemonstration at the OKCA Show. Over theyears many bladesmiths have demonstratedfor the Show.Myself, GeneChapman,Gary Little,Al Barton,Red St Cyr,and for thelast severalyears JimRodenbaugh.

THE OKCASHOWSECRET OFSUCCESSI believe themain reasonfor thesuccess of thisShow is thatall types of knives are welcome. The heart ofthe Show is a unique blend of the old and thenew... and everything in-between. Where elseis there such a wide variety of collectable(antique and new) and handmade knives ofevery type and style? Another "secret" factorof success is the help furnished by all themany members who support the Show byvolunteering their time to make the Showwhat it is. Then there are all the donationsmade by the commercial companies andindividuals, it goes on and on. It is truly agroup effort that is expertly and efficiently ledby Dennis and Elayne. It's no secret that theydevote nearly their whole lives to the Cluband Show. Phyllis and I give out sincerethanks to all those, past and present, who dothe work to make the Show run smoothly andbe the success it is.LOOKING BACKMy new little work knife made by Ivan Maras

Mini Show. It is a good way to payourselves back and have a fun time.We had donations of 74 door prizesand 155 raffle prizes. Thank you, everyone, for your generosity.Several items were not picked upat the Show so Dennis and Imailed 61 ticket items (door prizesand raffle prizes) the Saturdayfollowing the Show. No rest for thewicked.

It was very special that so many ofyou made a special effort to thankus for the fun you had at the Show. Butdo remember that you can patyourselves on the back also since youcontributed to our success.

    A special thank you to,

who helped me to keep smiling and upbeat.

See you at the meeting at G. Willickers, May08. After that, see you at the next knife or gunshow.

    Have a happy summer.

There was no meeting for the month of Aprilbecause we would have a Show that wouldprovide a meeting place for all.

Many of you came to the Club table to remarkthat you were having a very fun time. I hopeyou know that your best wishes are what makeit all happen. If we didnt have the support andhelp of all of you, there would not be asuccessful Show. It is a work in progress towhich all of us contribute our share. We helpwhere we can. Please take note of the lists ofnames of people who help to insure the successof our Show and to whom we owe a real debt.

The Club table did a brisk business. We sold 77tables for the 2004 Show. We were paid for260 memberships (which includes the 76renewals on Friday). We try to make everyoneaware that it is a plus to renew yourmembership before Friday so you will be ableto get into the Show floor at 10:00am. I dothank all of those who listened and arranged

payment so we had their membership cards atthe will call desk with the Show packets. Thenumber of renewals on Friday were about thesame as last year which was a big surprise. Ihad anticipated there would be a learnedresponse that would preclude a repeat; howeverwhen I counted we had 81 last year who waiteduntil Friday to renew. Awful close. The two bigbottle necks to our Show are name tags andmembership renewals. If you are not a tableholder or a member, you cannot enter duringthe member-table holder hours of the Show. Weask that everyone who reserves a table for theShow advise us the name which should beprinted on the second (you only have two pertable holder) badge so we will not have to makea badge at the Show. It is understood that lastminute changes will occur, however.....Oh, sigh.

We tried to smooth the Silent Auction a bit.New forms and a sign up sheet. We had 24bidders and the bidding was brisk for somevery prized knives. Thank you all whocontributed to this event. did anexcellent job of coordination. The money thatwe raise from this, the raffle, and the sale of theClub knives offsets the expenses we incur forthe free tables and the potluck at the Christmas

    Jim Chartier

It was twenty-eight years ago that Dennis andI started The Oregon Knife Show. We ran thefirst two shows as a private enterprise. TheOregon Knife Collectors hadn't got its currentname yet. The knife club's name at that timewas Emerald Blade Collectors. Those firsttwo shows sparked rapid growth in the clubto the point where we incorporated andchanged the name to reflect our state-widemembership. From that time on the Show wasa Club event. I don't remember that we everconsidered any limitations on what the Showcould become. It has been a slow and steady

(Continued from Page 1)Too Many Knives...

growth over the twenty-eight years ofexistence.

LOOKING AHEADI see a bright future for The Oregon KnifeShow. It may have reached a point where notas much growth will happen. However, thereare always new folks getting into collectingand making knives, so why not grow? So, I'llnot put any limits on it and just go along forthe ride.

What this means is that there will be noKnewslettter until September. We lay backand recharge our batteries during the monthsof June, July and August, then we can gofull steam ahead for the next fiscal year.(Hiatus = An interruption in the intensity oramount of something. Fiscal year = atwelve-month period between settlements offinancial accounts.)

I had hoped that some of our goals wouldprove themselves during the 2003 OregonKnife Show. The most important one cameback to me numerous times: be friendly toeveryone at the Show. The comment have anup attitude seemed to be the mostcommon expression I heard from the tableholders, members and security people. Onecomment was made by a first time visitorwho was amazed at the friendliness andcompared our Show to the majority of gunshows where everyone seemed grumpy andnot friendly.

Thank you, one and all, for allowing me tobe the only grump at the Show.

The Show seems to run with few flawsexcept every once in a great while there isan ooopps and an oh me gosh. So it waswith the award for the new maker. After thejudging was over and done with, there was aslight shifting of knives and the real winningknife was moved to the wrong side in error. As a result we elected to offer two NewMaker awards. was themaker who was shuffled under the table. Both and wereadvised and understood the problem. So for2003 we have two New Maker awards.

The cupboard is bone dry with articles forour next year of Knewslettters that will startin September. I am not worried too much asmy friend, Jim Taylor, cant stand to hear agrown man whine so out comes his quill penand we are blessed with another series ofeducational and entertaining words.

We had some great articles this last year andran a twelve page edition of the KnewslettterDid any of you catch that? Ten pages is ourmax without added postage expense. Butthere were so many great contributions we

paid the extra. We know there are manycollectors and makers who have words ofwisdom to share. We want those words. Ourpublication needs you, the members, to giveus your words for all to learn.

Samba Ja was an opening ceremony thatwas a late coming idea. Elayne and I sat inon a rehearsal just weeks before the Show. The group of about 25 met in a small musicroom at a local school and as each membercame in they plugged their ears and joinedin the making of music. Yep, we plugged uptoo. The room was alive with the music thatmoves the heart and soul and continued forabout 20 minutes before they took a break. We enjoyed what we felt but had no ideawhether the Oregon Knife Collectors groupwould feel the same way.

From the expressions on the faces of all inattendance it was well received and enjoyed.I saw feet moving and hands clapping and Isaw the start of a wonderful Show.Something different, something unique andsomething special for the membership.

So whats for next year? Would you believeit? One of our own members came to meand committed to do something that I haveattempted to do for years. I was pumped. Sothe opening ceremonies for the 2004 Showis set to go. And this will be a grandsurprise.

The awards banquet worked out quite well.It was a rocky boat getting there, but itsailed well as far as most knew.from Camillus Cutlery was a great speaker, and I was fascinated with his informationabout his company. The food for the mostpart was pretty good and everyone had agood time.

However to get it here was a monumentaltask. It was a financial disaster. We havealways taken a loss($12 doesnt cover thecost), but it was a way the Club could offera fun happening to the majority of themembers without an outlandish expense foreither party. A fun evening with friends. However this year we were not supportedby the membership as we have in years past.People have their own agendas but thebanquet was not part of the agenda. Thiswas made obvious by the absence of anumber of the award winners. For thesereasons and other reasons we will cancel thebanquet for 2004. To those who haveattended faithfully over the years, we arevery sorry. We have discussed our decisionwith several of the faithful; and when theyare fully aware of all the problems, they

    The Banquet ......

    Jim Furgal

regretfully understand and agree to thecancellation. Are we slamming the door onthis event? Not really. But until we come upwith a better, more trouble free event, this isthe way it will have to be.

The rental of knife display cases worked outpretty well. We have had a commitmentfrom the cabinet maker to do it again fornext year. is the man.He will be back at the Show next year. Giveus a break by getting in your orders wayearly for rental cases for the 2004 Show. Thelast minute requests this year swamped us.

The rope cutting and grindingdemonstrations were real crowd pleasersagain this year, as wasdemonstration of forging. wasthe reigning king with his ability to slicethrough nine one inch free hanging hempropes. Ed, you are a cut above.was the winner of the grinding competition.Thank you, one and all, for supporting thesespecial events.

In a past Knewslettter we suggested eatingplaces that our visitors might want toconsider while at the Knife Show. We didntget any feed back (pun intended) about theresults of this but on Sunday we wereinvited to dine at one of our favorite places,The Hillside Grill. Imagine our surprisewhen we entered and saw about 30 knifetype peopleenjoying thefood at this, one of therecommendedplaces. Itseemed like allwere enjoyingand this made usfeel good that oursharing wasappreciated. Wewill do it againnext year.

We have received over 100 requests fortables for our 2004 Show. This is the besttime to re-up for the next Show. It also is away to help the Show too. So if you forgotto sign up for next year, go dig up yourShow Packet and get that application formand mail it in. Or if your pet ate the packetthinking it was a Tootsie Roll, you can getan application form off our web site.www.oregonknifeclub.org

The 2003 April Knife Show has come and gonefor this year and what a Show it was. I had agreat time and enjoyed talking with everyone andlooking at the knives. Thanks to all of you forcoming to this Show; we enjoyed you and theknives. We hope to see you next year at the 2004Knife Show.

The displays for this years Show were alloutstanding and enjoyed by many people. I madethe rounds and checked out the displays this year.Club members spend a lot of time and $$$getting the displays in order. Jim Pitblado had agreat Remington Scout knife display. I talkedwith Jim and he told me that this was the firsttime he had ever put that display of Remingtonknives out for all to see. It was amazing to see all

of the Remington Scout knives in such a mintstate. Jim got in the top six awards for thatdisplay.

I could go on about each and every display as tohow wonderful I thought they were. I would justlike to thank each and every one of you forputting up the displays of knives. Because, without you, our Show would be a lot less. Thankyou

We should also thank the members who take thetime to do the judging for the Club. That takestime away from your knife pleasures and theClub thanks you for that and so do I.

I got to spend some time with a table holder nextto me, his name was Fred Coleman. Fred had allkinds of knives on his table and seemed to bebusy. What Fred did have that I like was acomplete set of Oregon Club knives. It was greatto just study each and every one. Fred was veryproud to have them. Thanks, Fred, for showingthem to us all. See you next year.

Thanks to Jim Furgal. President of CamillusKnives, for the great talk he gave at the dinnerSaturday night. Also would like to thank JimFurgal for the information about a Remingtonknife that I purchased at the Show. A friend ofmine from Walla Walla, Washington, Mike Filan, sold me a knife at the Show that he hadpurchased at auction last November. The knife isa Remington 2000 Special Limited Edition 1 of500, R1630, and has black cracked ice handles. Asingle blade lock back with serrated edge on theback half of the blade.

Barbara showed this knife to Jim Furgal at theCamillus display and asked him if he knew about

the knife. Jim stated no, but he would check andcall us in a couple of days after the Show. Sureenough, Jim called in a couple of days and toldBarbara that the knife was made special for theLou Horton Sporting Goods Store in Minnesota. The value right now is no known for sure, its notsky high, but its up there for being somewhatrare. I forgot to mention the cracked ice handlealso has a pearl shaped bullet on it. Thanks toMike Filan and Jim for the knife. Its always funwhen something like that can be done.

I hope you got to look at the very large all woodRemington R1128 knife I had on display. Theknife was made from maple and oak, is seven feetlong when opened, four and half feet closed, fourinches thick, the weight is about thirty pounds. The wooden knife was made by Richard Minor ofSpringfield OR. We hope you enjoyed seeing it.

Whats next for the Club? Well I think it is theChristmas Mini Show at the Lane CountyConvention Center. This year it will be in theWheeler building which is straight across fromthe parking lot where we have had the other minishows. This year we hope to have over 100tables. This is a one-day-only, Saturday, 8AM to4PM show. The lighting is very good and thingsonly get better from here. More details later.December 13, 2003 is the date for that show inEugene.

Last but not least to all of you who came by andsaid, I like your articles in the Knewslettter, thankyou. From an old retired police detective whoonly hunts and pecks, thanks.

Have a Hoppy Day. Stay Safe.

April 18, 2003To Dennis and Elayne Ellingsen, and OKCA members,

I am writing to express my appreciation to all of you forwhat I consider to be the best Oregon Knife CollectorsAssociation show ever.

The 28th annual OKCA show held at the Lane CountyConvention Center and Fairgrounds in Eugene, Oregon,April 12th and 13th was well attended and I expect allthe 470 table holders will share my opinion.

The opening ceremony with Samba Ja on Saturdaymorning got our attention and the tempo was great.

If you were a custom knife collector or maker, thequality and variety was awesome. In fact, a highlight ofthe show, for me, was seeing the smile on RobertWeinstocks face when the Friday announcement wasmade that his custom folder won Best of Show. Theknife he entered in the competition was beautiful andwonderfully engineered and, of course, was sold by theend of the show.

The number of quality antique knife sellers continues toexpand and it was great to see Paul Basch, Jim andCindy Taylor, Joe Seale, Jerry Skelton, Rhett and JaneStidham, Bill and Debbie Wright, Hank and GretaHansen, Tony Foster, and Tommy Clark. All of themcame from far away states to help make this show thebest there is.

The many exhibits took hours to view and were betterthan ever. If one wants to see the best of miniatures, tools, trappers, scouts, swords, and military edgedweapons, this is the place to view them. The Saturday night awards banquet was well attendedwith Jim Furgal of Camillus Cutlery as an interestingspeaker. The awards given for the displays werebeautiful, expensive Al Mar folders that will becherished for many years. Thank you to those whodonated them and enhanced these knives.

I look forward to the OKCA 2004 show and commendDennis, Elayne, and all those of the OKCA who workedvery hard to make this the Show of the Year.

    Sincerely,Jim and Barbara Pitblado

    ====4/19/03Dear Dennis and Elayne,

Again, a great show as usual. I have been coming to theEugene Knife Show for at least ten years and it seemsto get better each time. I want you to know that Iappreciate your efforts.

My main reason for writing, other than praising you forall your hard work, is to relate to you, a very pleasantand unexpected situation that took place on Friday theeleventh.

I arrived at the Fairgrounds about 9:30 and got in line. Istruck up a conversation with a young man fromBankok and helped him get his table holders packet.Once admitted into the main area, I proceeded to theRippys table to see if they needed help in setting up.After visiting for a few minutes, I proceeded to movearound and visit with several other table holders that Iknew, including Dave and Lonna Schmiedt of Stockton,Calif. I have, in the past, sold them several items fromthe Phillipines and have developed a rapport with them.In our conversation (while trying to stay out of theirway as they were setting up) I mentioned that I hadanother item that they might be interested in. I hadmentioned it to them last year but hadnt brought it withme. Anyway, Dave said he would like to see it and Iwent out and got it from my truck. When Dave andLonna saw it, they got a bit excited. (Dave knewexactly what it was and where it had come from.) Iasked Dave if he was interested in purchasing it and hesaid he was. Now, comes the interesting part. I toldthem they could have it for $200.00. They said theywould take it and Dave asked Lonna to pay me. She hadto go out to their pickup to get some cash since theyhadnt finished setting up. Lonna came back in andhanded me $300.00. I immediately informed her thatthe price was $200.00 and that she had given me toomuch money. She said no, it was right because theitem was worth much more and they felt I should have$300.00. Needless to say, I was absolutely blownaway. I repeated that I said they could have it for$200.00 but they insisted on the $300.00. Wow! I stillcant believe there are people like this still around. Itrestores my faith in my fellow man. (And woman)

I just thought you might like to hear about the integrityand caliber of some of the people that attend the knifeshow. I would like to thank all the people that work sohard to put on a show of this magnitude. Keep up thegood work. I am already looking forward to next year.
