FACTOR stresses open door policyIn the wake of FACTOR's open debate whichtook place back on April 17, ExecutiveDirector, Heather Sym, has mixed feelings butcontends that the event was very much needed.

"It (the meeting) had to take place so wecould put any questions behind us and proceedforward," says Sym. "Prior to this debate, therewere two people who had expressed, not di-rectly to FACTOR, concerns they had about theorganization yet when the time came for themto speak up they chose not to. In my opinion, atthat point, they became non -issues. Otherwise, there was a lot of positive dialogue that cameout of the meeting." FACTOR has had morepositive dialogue with the industry these pasttwelve months than it has had in years. Through

open discussions, meetings and surveys,FACTOR has always maintained an open doorpolicy. They are not looking to build a welfaresystem and an entity to create jobs but aretrying to help build a healthy recordingindustry and communication is the key. "Whenwe stop having dialogue with the industry thenwe stop being of value," adds Sym.

Financial analyst to aiddevelopment of CIRPARosario Marchese, Ontario Minister of Cultureand Communications, recently announced thatthe Canadian Independent Record ProductionAssociation (CIRPA) will hire a financialanalyst with the help of a $37,252 grant.

CIRPA has named Kevin Bittle as theiranalyst, employing him for a period of ninemonths where he will be responsible for thedevelopment of business and marketing planswhich outline future directions and strategiesfor CIRPA.

Bittle has an MBA from the University ofWestern Ontario, where he has also taught. Hehas performed company profiles for recordcompanies and has worked for CIRPA in thepast, presenting FM Policy Revues to theCRTC.

CIRPA is Toronto based and representsthe Canadian -owned sound recording industry. With over 140 members, which includeproducers, record labels and recording studios,CIRPA acts as an advocacy group around is-sues such as copyright legislation. It alsoprovides educational and research services.

BMG's Jim Campbell and Susan Desmarais withCrash Test Dummies at recent Horseshoe Tavernshowcase.

Several issues were addressed at the April17th meeting about what FACTOR should andshould not be doing but the main elementconstantly evolved was that FACTOR simplydoes not have enough money to do everythingit would like to do. Currently, the Departmentof Communications allots $2.2 million forsound recordings, videos and internationaltours and showcases. Another $1 million iscontributed by broadcasters to make up a totaloperating budget of about $4 million for this

Justin Entertainmentincreases visibilityJustin Entertainment, effectionately know byits employees as the "Little Indie that could",has made impressive strides into the new yearcovering the rock, pop and country markets. They }laveboth worked with several well-knownproducers including Andrew Komis a.k.a.Komix (Inner City, Sheena Easton) andRichard Rodwell (Dreim Warriors, MaestroFresh Wes) and have spent several years onnew artist development and production.

fiscal year including monies collected fromexisting loan paybacks. Along with the regularprograms, this year, four other music industryassociations will be involved with the agenda. They will be conducting juries throughout thecountry on behalf of FACTOR.

There will not likely be any meetings ordebates scheduled until FACTOR has itsannual review of the programs which will be inDecember. In the meantime, Sym invites anyand all comments regarding FACTOR and itsagenda to be addressed directly. Comments canbe forwarded to: FACTOR 100 Lombard St.,Toronto, Ont., M5C 2P2 (416) 368-8678.

New World Beat labelintroduced by AtticAlexander Mair, president ofAttic Records , hasannounced the formation of Attic World, aWorld Beat music label.

"World Beat has become a catch-allphrase, usually used to describe music with a'foreign' sound, whatever that may be," ex-plains Mair, continuing with, "In today'sshrinking world, more and more so called 'for-eign' influences are showing up in the output ofleading artists. Paul Simon's Graceland andRhythm Of The Saints utilize the rhythms ofAfrica and South America to support his gratAmerican lyrics. Gypsy Kings and Kashtin goplatinum with lyrics that can be understood byvery few purchasers. Jamaican reggae hasfinally found a home without being overly ho-mogenized."

Mair goes on to point out that some of hisfavourite recordings haven't "fitted into theusual slots - Rock, Pop Jazz etc., but have beenan amalgam of numerous influences. As Attichas been a diverse but mainstream label, wehave never felt comfortable in releasing someof these great artists on the Attic label."

Mair decided to go with the Attic Worldlabel after a meeting with producer John Capeklast summer. Mair says Capek played him"rough mixes of a project he had done in SouthAfrica that enchanted everyone at Attic. Wewanted to release it, but wanted to ensure itwasn't buried among our mainstream re-leases." He concludes with, "Solving this prob-lem was the genesis for Attic World, our newlabel."

Attic's Steve Waxman reveals that initialproduct releases on Attic World are "extremelyvaried": Capek's Brotherhood Of Man (re-corded in South Africa with lyrics by CarolePope, Capek and a number of African writers);the first North American releases by Flarickfrom Holland; Globetrotters, an instrumentalby Finn Olafsson and Anders Roland; andDance And Celebrate by Innisfail, Alberta'sBourne & MacLeod. "Does Innisfail qualify asan exotic country?" asks Waxman. "Not yet,"he answers, "but the Celtic roots of AlanMacLeod's warpipes and Bill and Alan's years'with the Tannahill Weavers definitely gives theedge necessary to be on Attic World."

with Elvira CapreeseWe're back and rockin' and rollin' once again.A lot has been happening over the last couple ofweeks. HMV threw the big opening party for itssuperstore in downtown Toronto, a couple ofradio stations are in trouble, a very aggressiveand talented record company person has re-signed from his position with a major, a majoris about to make headlines . kinda like goodnews, bad news, two Toronto papers are tryingnot to let their dirty laundry hang out to publicview, and Canada's manager extraordanairecelebrates twenty years in the business. Now,the details of what I can reveal. (EC: Now, thedetails . . . ?)

Nice people ... What kind of people do wehave in this industry who would take advantageof a party to out and out steal? I was away, butI'm told the opening night party for HMV'ssuperstore in downtown Toronto was a realbarnbumer ... until, that is, the light-fingered,

They took the CDs to the washroom, tore off the wrappers, which they thought con-tained a trigger for the alarm system, stuffedthem in their purses and pockets . . . and nodoubt told their host what a great party it was asthey left with the stolen goods. These peoplehave balls as big as grapefruit. (EC: You knowwho you are . . . 1)

We can't lose talent like this. Many of youalready know that one of the NICE guys in thebusiness has resigned his position with a major,MAJOR company. They don't come any betterthan this REAL gentleman, and ALL the peoplehe has been working with, including the presi-dent of the company, are in shock at his leaving.I daresay, there were quite a few tears shedwhen he dropped the bombshell. He's leavingpurely for personal reasons . . . he couldn'toffend anyone if he tried to. There's nothingofficial at press time, but I told him I wouldn'tuse his name or company until they gave theword. Like many in the business, he got in-volved as a teenager and now he's in his mid -thirties, and it's difficult to think that with thetrack record he has, that he would just up andleave. I hope he's not going too far away. Hehas a talent that's rare in this business. (EC: Yousaid it . . . RARE!)

Leonard Rambeau came to Toronto twentyyears ago "to give this showbusiness a try for acouple of years," he says " . . . and Balmur wasborn." With Centro as the setting, a small inti-mate (front room) celebration was held on May8 with Madam Chairman and husband BillLangstroth; business consultant, Lyman

Jordan hitting stridewith Stewart singleMarc Jordan is entering an exciting newdimension in his songwriting career. It's called"phenomenal success", and he is doing it withthe help of Rod Stewart who recorded RhythmOf My Heart, which Jordan co -wrote with JohnCapek more than seven years ago. The track, sitting at #2 on the RPM 100 Hit Tracks aftereight weeks of charting, is included onStewart's new album, Vagabond Heart, whichis nudging the top of the RPM 100 Albumschart. Both the single and album are also per-forming strongly on U.S. and European charts.

Jordan, who is as a performeras well, won a Juno nomination for hisMannequin album (Warner Bros). His C.O.W.album (RCA) featured the Canadian Top 40 hitEdge Of The World (RPM - Sept. 15/90) andBurning Down The Amazon which became ananthem for Earth Day 1990. As well, his musichas been featured in such films as Heavy Metal,a rock and roll classic, The CanadianConspiracy starring John Candy, and ShadowDance, for which he received a Genienomination for the song title.

Jordan's material has been recorded byChicago, Manhattan Transfer, Kansas, DianaRoss and Juice Newton. He is signed to GeffenMusic. Rhythm Of My Heart is published inCanada by Warner/Chappell Music and byWarner Bros. Music in the U.S.

Maclnnis and wife Anne; attorney, DaveMatheson and wife Diane; and Leonard and hiswife Caron. Tony Longo was in charge to ravereviews and a rare night out at an eatery forMadam. (EC: That's true . . . Madam doesn'teat out too often!!!!)

Hey duffers, get ready ... ! It's coming upthat time of year again for the Ontario Music In-dustry Golf Tournament. Sleepy Hollow's theplace for an early morning July 30th tee off.(EC:Who' s emceeing the after dinner show thisyear . . . Vito or Kris . . ?)

A new home for the homeless ... ! OntarioPlace will be FREE this year. Not the concerts, but if any of the homeless would like to brownpaperbag it and check out the very expensiveyachts for possible use as an overnight hostel,it's there for the asking. By the way, it's a greatidea . . . the free admission that is. The localpubs and restaurants just may be able to paytheir rent this year and make a bit of profit. It'llcost $10 to $12 for a reserved seat at the Forum, and $8 for unreserved lawn seats. That could bea little higher, depending on the act. Aftertwenty years . . . and a new "social conscious"Ontario government, changes had to be ex-pected. Watch for free admission to some of theconcert dates for welfare cases, who I under-stand might even be able to have their ticketssent to them in the mail. (EC: Let's here it forGentle Bob . . . !)

A very important year for country ... !Yes,this is going to be a very good year for countrymusic, particularly the Canadian brand. And, ifI were a country recording artist I'd bust my gutto be at the Variety Club Luncheon on May24th to work the room, and I'd make sure I wasat the Big Country Awards show on SundayMay 26th as well ... same reason. There's morebusiness done at events like this than in clubs orconcert halls. (EC: I '11 be there . .!)

COVER STORY - by Roy Windhager

13 Engines have four on the floorThe members of 13 Engines are not the kind tohave their heads stuck in the clouds. While theyare ecstatic about their major label debut, ABlur To Me Now, on Capitol Records, all fourare keeping their feet firmly on the floor."Wedon't go around saying that we're the next bigthing," says Mike Robbins, guitarist for theband, "we don't tend to look at things too farbeyond today."

13 Engines was formed in 1986 by JohnCritchley (vocals and guitar) and Robbins.Critchley, who was a York University musicstudent says, "we were the only two residentstudents that would drink at the university pub.I was studying music while Mike was studyinghis navel." The pair decided they made a goadcombination and decided to start a band. Theyeventually hooked up with Grant Ethier, adrummer from Kingston, Ont., and JimHughes, the bassist for 13 Engines. Hughesactually named the group but apparently thereis no particular meaning attached to it - it justseemed to capture the intensity of the band.

Prior to their deal with Capitol, the grouprecorded two independent albums forNocturnal Records in Detroit where they livedfor a couple of years. The Motor City wassomewhat of a cultural acid test for the fouryoung rubes but it was there that a number of

Hall and Oates sellout soft seatersThe recent Canadian leg of Hall and Oates'acoustic show focused on a more intimatesetting. They booked all the concerts in smalltheatres and the response was impressive.According to BMG promo rep, David Lindores, all the shows in Ontario were complete sell-outs including a spirited set at Toronto's Mas-sey Hall. Other cities included in the tour wereKitchener's Centre in the Square, HamiltonPlace, The Congress Centre in Ottawa, ThunderBay, Winnipeg, Regina, Calgary, Edmonton,Vancouver, and a sell-out at The Spectrum inMontreal. Daryl Hall and John Oates put on a

terrific show, as one might expect from twoperformers of their stature, however, the immi-nent stage setting and friendly rapport with theaudience made it an extra special treat. The pairplayed all their familiar hits going back to theirfirst album right up to their latest songs fromChange of Season.

songs that appear on A Blur to Me Now werewritten. It was also there that a chain reaction ofevents was set in motion leading them to thesunnier climate of Southern California. "We'reactually signed to two labels," explainsCritchley, "SBK Records in America andCapitol (Records) in Canada. What happenedwas, Capitol in the U.S. really liked our stuffand wanted to sign us but shortly after, theyfired some people in their A&R department.Capitol Canada, however, was still committedto it and they helped engineer the deal withSBK in New York."

Over a two month period in the fall of1990, the recording came together at SoundCity Studios in Los Angeles with producerDavid Briggs. Briggs had picked the studioprimarily because he was familiar with it andbecause of its simple, back -to -basics choice ofequipment. The studio has no automatedmixing board or other such tools that are nowcommonplace in most studios. Other recordingand mixing took place at Neil Young's homestudio, Indigo Ranch in Malibu which certainlyadded to the inspiration of the project. 13Engines picked David Briggs because of hisexperience and their admiration of his pastrecords.

"When we were sitting around a boardroom and the label says 'who would you like toproduce your record' and they give us themoney to get anybody we wanted, this fellowpopped into the forefront," says Robbins."Having produced a set of records that wereally enjoyed such as Neil Young'sEverybody Knows This Is Nowhere, After TheGold Rush, Spirit's Twelve Dreams of Dr.Sardonicus, and Alice Cooper's second album, the choice was obvious for us."

Creatively, 13 Engines is a self-sufficientsource of recording material. Critchley andRobbins share a lot of the writing process but itreally becomes a group effort in the end. Theydon't believe in recording outside material asthis would defeat the purpose for them asartists. "We write better songs than ChristopherWard so why spend $10,000 or so for apiece ofrubbish we can do ourselves," laughs Robbins.

The band is also very spontaneous onstage. While they rehearse quite regularly, theydo not choreograph their show. It's much moreimportant for them to focus on the music ratherthan put on a show that looks mechanical. SaysRobbins, "A band like ZZ Top, who you knowis going to be excellent every night, plays attheir peak because everything is preciselystaged. It's like a Big Mac. A Big Mac tastes thesame everywhere but if you go down to yourgreasy spoon, one day you'll get botulism butthe next day you might get the best tastingburger you ever had."

13 Engines has a kind of here and nowphilosophy. They don't look at the big pictureand tend to shy away from questions concern-ing the future of the band or the state of theworld to come. "We write about things thataffect us now," adds Robbins, "and whether ornot it sounds like we researched a topic, it's allvery spontaneous because we write from our

RPM -May 18, 1991 - 7

own knowledge and experiences."With a realistic approach to their craft and

the business surrounding it, 13 Engines refuseto get caught up in the whirlwind. It's refresh-ing to talk to talented artists with this kind ofattitude and, if patience is actually a virtue, success should find its way to 13 Engines.

No surprise ... Paula Abdul's Rush Rush justmisses debuting in the Top 40 as it enters onespot lower. It is easily the top entry this week. The only other strong entry comes from LutherVandross. Power Of Love/Love Power comesin at No. 56.

Could be the fourth! Rod Stewart has hadfive No. 1 songs in his career. He also has hadthree songs peak at No. 2. Rhythm Of My Heartcould become his fourth as it stalls one spotshort of the top. Alphabetically, Stewart is alsoone of 56 artists that begin with the letter "5"who have hit No. 1, by far the most popularletter. Name the first and last artists filed under"S" who have hit No. 1.

Amy who? Amy Grant's Heart In Motionholds steady on the Albums chart at No. 20. Al-though she has been extremely successful forquite some time, mainstream Pop audiencesmay not be familiar with her. If they aren't, theyprobably will be soon as the first release, BabyBaby, appears headed for the top. It gained thisweek, but holds at No. 3.

Yes The Doobie's are back ... The DoobieBrothers' latest album, Brotherhood, has thisweek's highest entry on the Albums chart. Itenters at No. 36. That's a few spots higher thanUnion, the new Yes album. Despite the longsuccess of those two bands, they only have oneNo. 1 hit between them. The Doobie Brothershit the top in 1979 with What A Fool Believes.Yes' Owner Of A Lonely Heart peaked at No. 2in 1984.

Emmett climbing again. Rik Emmett's WorldOf Wonder bullets to No. 43 in its second week. It's the fourth release from his Duke Streetalbum, Absolutely. When A Heart Breaks andSaved By Love both reached the Top 20 at No.13 and No. 17 respectively.

R.E.M. hangs on! Qut Of Time from R.E.M.,holds the top spot on the Albums chart for thesecond week, but Rod Stewart's VagabondHeart was very close. Along with The Tragi-cally Hip's Road Apples and Roxette's Joyride, the Top four albums all got there relativelyquickly. Mariah Carey, now at No. 7 didn'treach the top until its 36th week. That could beoutdone if Black Crowes make it to the top.Shake Your Moneymaker climbs to No. 6 in its46th week.

Remember Disco fever .. ? Of the 56 artiststo hit No. I filed under the letter "5", the firstone alphabetically is Samantha Sang, whoreached the top with Emotion in 1978. LeoSayer is next in line. At the other end, TheSylvers are listed last. The Sylvers reached thetop with Boogie Fever in 1976 and Hot Line thefollowing year. Sweet is just before them on thelist.

Brockum offers retailers unique merchandise plusA Canadian company founded in 1972,Brockum is an operating division of the BCLEntertainment Corporation and is the world'slargest merchandiser of souvenirs in the field of

popular music. Quite recently, BrockumCanada introduced a program that offeredCanadian record retailers a unique opportunityto complement recorded music product withrock merchandise, specifically T-shirts. LorrieShuman, Manager of Brockum's LicensedProperties, says the T -Shirts "are a terrificproduct vehicle for record stores simplybecause they really fit into what they're alreadyselling, which is music."

Brockum already has a very large andsuccessful program running that is servicingsome of the largest record store chains in theUnited States; an example being Musiclandwith more than 2,000 stores taking part.Brockum wanted to align itself with a progres-sive music store chain that would be willing tosee how the product does here in Canada. Dis-cussions were held with a number of chains but, surprisingly, not that many in Canada jumpedat the chance to increase the sales margin oftheir operations.

The one chain that was most receptive at

Back to Toronto forMariposa FestivalThe Mariposa Festival will return to Toronto forits 31st year of operation. The setting will beOntario Place from Sept. 6 through 8. TheMariposa Folk Festival, as it was known foryears, began in Gordon Lightfoot's hometownof Orillia in 1961 and has seen several homessince, including the Toronto Islands, BathurstQuay and Molson Park.

"Being at Ontario Place means that we'rehaving a streetcar event rather than a freewayfestival," explained Ann Smiley, president ofthe festival. "Not only will it make it so mucheasier for our Toronto supporters to be part ofthe event, but we have a terrific opportunity tointroduce Mariposa to Ontario Placeenthusiasts."

Several acts have already been fumed, including Canadian performers StephenFearing, Bourne & McLeod, the AnneLederman Trio, Eugene Ripper with DeadheadCool, Tom Lewis, Wyckham Porteous, RickFielding and Tony Quarrington, and BobbyWatt. American acts in the lineup include theSun Rhythm Section, studio session playerswho recorded with Elvis Presley, Charlie Rich,Carl Perkins and others, The Fairfield Four, afive -man a cappella gospel group fromMemphis, plus Mariposa favourites John Prine,Guy Clark, and early festival veteransRambling Jack Elliot, Dave Van Ronk and TomPaxton. It's expected another 35 artists will besigned over the next few weeks.

The festival is sponsored in part by theOntario Ministry of Culture andCommunications through the Ontario ArtsCouncil and the Municipality of MetropolitanToronto through the Toronto Arts Council.Negotiations are apparently underway with anumber of corporations, foundations andgovernment agencies for further support.

the time was Music World which is owned byPindoff Record Sales. Pindoff also servicesEaton's and Grammys' stores. Brockum spokewith Music World in mid -November of 1990and agreed to do a test in one of their flagshipstores, located in the Eaton Centre. The productwas brought in at Christmas and Music Worldreported an 85% sell -through. "Granted, it wasChristmas," says Shuman, "but I think it provedto everybody at Pindoff and Brockum that thegoods will sell and it really doesn't take a lot ofmerchandising behind them. You just have toshow them and people will buy them." With theshirts competitively priced there seems to be no

problem in moving them along. The next step was for Brockum to move

into 26 stores in greater Metropolitan Toronto. An inventory control sheet and order form weregiven to the stores and once a week the storescould order extras off eight designs becauseBrockum was still testing to see which storeswould do better. "From a demographic point ofview, we wanted to see which stores wouldneed some adjustment with respect to thedesigns," says Shuman.

The result of the testing indicated thatwhile some stores could easily sell heavier actslike Guns N' Roses, other stores requiredslightly softer designs. Brockum now has 25designs which are presently being finalized andwill be available to retailers shortly.

The next step is for Brockum to representtheir artists not only with T-shirts but with tanktops, sweat -shirts, caps, posters and jewellery.Perhaps the most exciting addition will be theRockware denim jackets. Like all Brockummerchandise the jackets are designed with in -

FACTOR schools repsfor regional evaluationsRegional evaluations of FACTOR applicationsare now underway after training sessions withfour representatives from music industryassociations in Nova Scotia, Alberta, Manitobaand Saskatchewan were recently completed.

put from the individual artist and, after theinitial success of the Rolling Stones' jackets, the Rockware line has been upgraded to featureMotley Crue, Aerosmith, The Grateful Deadand Poison among others.

With all the positive aspects Brockum hasto offer, from promotional give-aways andmeet -the -artist opportunities, to The BrockumUpdate, which keeps clients informed on theactivities of Brockum and its roster, it's surpris-ing why more retailers didn't get in on theaction from the beginning. "The major com-ment from record stores was that they're not inthe clothing business," says Brian Stutz,Marketing Manager for Brockum. "What theydon't realize," he explains, "is that, since thedemise of vinyl, they've got more space in theirstores and the same people that buy the re-corded product will buy the shirts."

Both Shuman and Stutz are extremelyexcited about Brockum's newest line ofmerchandise and, with the successful results atthe Music World chain, it's expected thatBrockum product will be avilable through morechains over the next few months.

In conclusion, Shuman boasts, "We feelcomfortable that we have the best merchandisein the business and by far the best roster and weprovide the best service for our clients.Brockum has been successful because theclients like dealing with us." - PF

Heavily guitar -laden, Men WithoutHats' latest release fearlessly lungesforth Into rock's core, adding scars topop's sometimes too -perfect face. Thisrecord makes an Intriguing change inmusical direction for the Montreal four-some yet it remains true to the band'spowerful pop fables. A harder edgedand vigorous album, It cuts melody withexacting precision and bleeds rock inIts fullest glory. Recorded last fall inNew York and mixed in Rhode Island, the album was produced by StefanDoroschuk and co -produced by MikeScott. A guest appearance by GregMartin of the Kentucky Headhunterslends a further dimension to three of theeleven tracks. From the soaring ballad,Everybody Wants To Know, to the driv-ing power of the title track and single,Sideways, this album invites listenersto discover the band all over again.Quite a diverse collection of tuneswhich launches Men Without Hats intoa whole new era. Grammy Award -winning artist MichaelBolton Is back with his fifth release andIt looks like he has a very strong fol-lowup to Soul Provider, which soldmore than six million copies world-wide. Produced by Walter Afanasieffand Bolton, this release has mega -hitpotential and Bolton's voice has neversounded better. Love Is A WonderfulThing Is the first single, which Bolton co -wrote with Andy Goldmark (whoteamed up with Bolton to write the titletrack single from Soul Provider). It is anuptempo song reminiscent of Motown. The title track is sure to be a single as isMissing You, featuring Kenny G on sax,Now That I Found You, New Love andWe're Not Making Love Anymore which

is a duet sung with Patti LaBelle. Boltonincludes a solid version of PercySledge's When A Man Loves A Womanand a song written with Bob Dylancalled Steel Bars. Good, solid musicthat should see success on CHR, AC,AOR and R&B charts. (Cassette re-viewed) - PF

13 ENGINESA Blur To Me NowCapitol C2 96207

This is the major label debut for theToronto -based 13 Engines and It's aperfect showcase for the group'sunique rock 'n roll grit. The songs areperformed with the same intensity theyportray on stage. Perhaps this Is due tothe production of David Briggs, who Isbest known for his work on Neil Young'searlier albums and actually recordedsome of this album at Nell Young'shome studio In Malibu. He managed tocapture and maintain a genuine liveperformance from the band. The firstsingle Is Big Surprise, which is a verymelodic yet forceful tune and should dowell at CAR and AOR radio. The albumis released In the U.S. on SBK Recordswith the first single there being King OfSaturday Night. All 13 (of course)tracks were written by the band with co-production by John Hanlon. Other high-lights Include Night Of The ShootingStar and You're Nothing If You're NotStrong. (CD reviewed) - RW

Quebec chanteuse Mitsou's secondrelease Is bound to gain attention, notjust for the controversial video Dis-Mol,Dis-Mol but also for some very strongmaterial, some of which was co -writtenby Mitsou. Produced by Richard Buckand Pierre Gendron, who is also hermanager, it is sung in French with theonly English song having been writtenby Ivan Doroschuk of Men WithoutHats. Dorsochuk wrote the title trackand A Funny Place (The World Is)which will be the next single released. This album Is up -lifting with a Euro-popfeel and should have fans, even critics, putting on their dancing shoes.(CD reviewed) - PF

LORRIE MORGANSomething In RedBMG - 3021-2R

Lorrle Morgan has hit her mark withthis, her second album, which offers afresh approach to the traditional coun-try integrity. This album brims with theconfidence and maturity of a seasonedperformer at ease with an Impressiverange of material. Along with producerRichard Landis, Morgan chose to ex-plore her diverse musical passions. The showpiece cut is the title track,Something In Red, which looks at awoman's life in terms of the clothing shebuys over the course of the year. Otherhighlights include a unique version ofLittle Anthony's Tears On My Pillow, theup -tempo Hand Over Your Heart, and aknockout duet with Dolly Parton on TheBest Woman Wins. It's Morgan's vocalperformance, however, that holds thematerial together. Hers is a voicenotable for its believability - a qualitythat goes to the core of Morgan'sphilosophy as a world -classentertainer. (CD reviewed) - RW

HANK WILLIAMS Jr. -CountryPure HankWarner/Curb CD 26536-P

Hank Is back and he will definitely havehis rowdy friends over to party with thisalbum cranking out a full range of pureHank. From tender songs like AngelsAre Hard To Find to rollicking numberslike Honky Tonk Train and MemphisBelle, this album aims to please.Produced by Barry Beckett, Jim EdNorman and Hank Williams Jr., thisalbum's ten tracks contain four originalsand five tunes Hank personally recom-mends for partying and dancing. MixedIn with some originals are a WaylonJennings tune and a Ronnie Van Zanttune. The first single/video If It Will, ItWill starts this party and should appealto country and rock fans alike. All thegreat rockers aside, the highlight isHarlan Howard's touching Be CarefulWho You Love (Arthur's Song), whichHank dedicates to the late Arthur Q.Smith, one of Nashville's unrecognizedand best songwriters. Also worth men-tioning is the picture of The Angel on theinside cover. (CD reviewed) -PF

YESUnionArista - ARCD 8643

Perhaps when the song PerpetualChange was introduced on their classicalbum, The Yes Album, Jon Andersonand Chris Squire knew something therest of us didn't. Certainly through thetwo decades of its existence, the bandhas gone through tremendouschanges and this latest project seemsto reflect them quite accurately. Unionis a celebration of the original castwhich combines the best of classic Yeswith the best of modern Yes. Interest-ingly, the material is a combination ofworks scheduled for separate ABWHand Yes albums penned individuallybefore the bands came together.Already doing well at radio, Yescontinues to sell out concerts and has.done so, even prior to the album'srelease. BODEANSBlack and WhiteSlash/Reprise - CD 26487

Solid writing and excellent productiongive this album everything a music fancould want in a record. The Bodeansprovide an Interesting mix of rock androots styles. Most of the lyrics createvivid imagery and clear-cut storylines, especially on tracks like Going Home. When writer, Sam Lianas was workingwith Robbie Robertson, he toldRobertson of how his grandparents hadto move from Texas to Wisconsin towork in the factories and start new lives.Robertson's reply was "sounds like asong." Judging from the other tracks, Itappears that the rest of the lyricsevolved from personal experiencesand are heart -felt. With production byDavid Z, the same heart and soulcomes through in the band's perform-ance with gutsy songs like Black, Whiteand Blood Red, Good Things and TrueDevotion. This album should be ofparticular Interest to AOR stations.(CD reviewed) -RW
